8 Structures That Were Impossible To Create Without Parametric Modelling Software
© Maxim Schulz
As Jean Nouvel rightly said, “Each New Situation Requires a New Architecture“, Parametric is the future, it truly is – The possible refinement of the design processes powered by digital processes has led to a rethinking of an engineer’s or designer’s approach to various application areas. Prototyping in architecture, parametric modelling software, and designing have all seen exquisite approaches in recent years that have come to be known as ‘Parametric Design.’
In the field of architecture and design, the phrase ‘What’s old is new again’ holds a valuable place. Today’s breakthrough designs, however, defy convention. Where the conventional styles thrived on – straight lines, acute angles, and sharp corners, Parametric architecture is on free-form architectural ideas and concepts. Each structure owns its individuality and character defined by sweeping lines, irregular shapes and curves.
The development of a digital model consisting of a set of pre-programmed guidelines or algorithms described as parameters is known as ‘Parametric Modelling’. Rather than being manually edited – the model or components are generated by internal computation and logic arguments.
Parametric modelling software isn’t a new concept for architecture or design. Neither did the PC invent parametric architecture, nor did it redefine engineering; it did, however, provide a vital tool that has subsequently enabled designers to plan and construct innovative structures under increasingly complicated subjective and quantitative constraints.
Let’s look at some of the astounding works and structures that could have been impossible to create with the absence of parametric modelling software. Here are our Top 8 picks from some of the finest works in the world of computation.

1. TERA, Upstate New York by AI SpaceFactory© 3D Natives
Building Type: Spacefactory’s Earth Habitat
© 3D Natives
This building provides a more straightforward, long-term solution for a building in this world while also developing systems for existing on another planet. TERA was constructed out of compostable materials with the help of 3D printing and parametric modelling software which was designed for the sustenance on Mars. a material developed from crops like corn and sugarcane – Biopolymer Basalt Composite was tested by NASA to get a confirmation of the material being 50 per cent more robust than concrete. With the use of natural materials and fun decor, TERA is a luxuriously minimalist design.

2. The Yas Hotel, Abu Dhabi by Asymptote Architects© Asymptote Architects
Building Type: Hospitality
The Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, by Asymptote Architects is utterly sci-fi. With a weblike shading structure that masks the hotel’s two 10-story elliptical towers, the hotel opted for a cutting edge technology and futuristic form.
The hotel accommodates 500 rooms on a 900,000 square feet land sits on the edge of Yas Marina Formula One race circuit, with a steel bridge knitting the two towers together. The steel and glass latticework on the exteriors, also known as the grid shell, was generated in order to recreate speed, sleek form, and the dynamic energy Formula One racing beholds.

With the help of parametric modelling software and BIM, the curvilinear shape appears to be effortless. The parametric model manages the form and detail of the structure, resulting in precise tolerances and the creation of a universal joint connection. They were also able to deduct the structural members: the grid shell is supported by only ten supports.
Each of the 5000 fritted glass panels that make up the faceted surface has LED luminaires built-in which allows the geometry to transform into a full-spectrum light show at night. This grid shell apart from conveying a sense of high-tech luxury also balances the demands of the harsh desert environment.

3. MX3D bridge, Amsterdam by Joris Laarman & Arup© Thea van den Heuvel
Building Type: Pedestrian Bridge
It is a 12 meter wide 3D printed pedestrian bridge in Amsterdam that took almost a span of six years to built considering its design complexity. Designed by Joris Laarman in association with the Dutch Robotics company MX3D; co-founded by Arup and Laarman, the bridge is a pre-fabricated design by six-axis robotic arms that were equipped with welding gears; which could span across the bridge, which was fabricated from stainless steel rods by six-axis robotic arms equipped with welding gear, spans the Oudezijds Achterburgwal in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Truly a future, where we can say that robots have taken over the construction industry!
© Thijs Wolzak
The curved form from stainless steel along with the lattice styled perforations were all designed using parametric modelling software. This was also a research project for the Alan Turing Institute where they built a network of sensors around the bridge to collect data like environmental conditions, load changes, pedestrian usage, climatic zones, footfall, etc. The digital twin of this bridge helped the designers to make an informed decision.
This project was heavily supported by the Amsterdam Municipal council as the researchers were going to play a pivotal role in catering to tourism. Through technologies like digital twin, parametric modelling software, robots and 3D printing, the MX3D bridge is a futuristic take on analysing the urban environment to create viable interventions through informed design decisions.
4. Hamburg Elbphilharmonie Auditorium, Germany by Herzog De Meuron© Maxim Schulz
Building Type: Auditorium
Made up of 10,000 individual acoustic panels lining the walls, ceilings, railings and balconies, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie Auditorium by Herzog and De Meuron is an excellent showcase of parametric design possibilities where each panel is made up of one million different-sized cells that help in defining the sound in the environment.
A collaboration of the architects with acousticians was done in order to create the algorithm responsible for the unique panels of the hall.
© Maxim Schulz
While designing this, the power of the parametric design was conceived as it could create a million cells, each with their own features based on the set of the parameters and the whole set-up of the algorithm was under control. This algorithm was used to impart a unique shape to the gypsum fibre acoustic panels lining the walls like an interlocking piece of a puzzle.
© Maxim Schulz
Had this been done manually, the result would have looked less original. Functioning with algorithms helped to generate – intricate, functional and beautiful new and surprising forms.
5. City Of Dreams Hotel Tower, Macau by Zaha Hadid Architects© Zaha Hadid Architects; 2014 Melco Crown Entertainment Limited
Building Type: Hospitality
A 40-storey luxury hotel designed by Zaha Hadid Architects is an entertainment destination known as the ‘City of Dreams.’ The simple volume of the two connected towers was extruded from the rectangular site to create this massive monolith of computational design finesse.
© Zaha Hadid Architects; 2014 Melco Crown Entertainment Limited
These towers are knitted together at podium and roof level with organically shaped bridges that punctuate the towers central external void. The whole structure is perceived as a ‘sculptural element’ unified by an exposed exoskeleton mesh structure.
© Zaha Hadid Architects; 2014 Melco Crown Entertainment Limited
The exposed face which is both expressive and forceful adds to the design’s vitality and envelops the building. China’s rich traditions of jade carving guided the fluid forms in order to create dramatic public spaces combined with guest rooms with innovation in engineering and formal cohesion.
6. Drift Bridge, Fort Worth, the United States by Volkan AlkanogluBuilding Type: Bridge
Volkan Alkanoglu’s Drift bridge is an amalgamation of art in urbanism. It is a pedestrian bridge constructed out of timber and steel which is an innovative example of plug-and-play urbanism. It is a sustainable design with an affordable strategy fabricated off-site with only a few hours of project installation.
© Jennifer Boomer
Responding to the site’s requirements, this project bridges the physical division of the neighbourhood and park system by a creek. This community-driven project with the employed installation and fabrication techniques can be further applied to communities.
© Jennifer Boomer
The 62-feet long bridge resembles a ship’s hull with a convex underbelly and a concave hull with roadway, railings and benches uniquely incorporated into a single design with uneven undulations and curves. This prefabricated bridge has a complex geometry which deals with timber as a core material. The internal bends and curves form seating spaces which later transition into the exoskeleton. This monolith of a bridge was assembled and executed in one piece on the creek, bridging the gaps within the community, well literally!
7. Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul, South Korea by Zaha Hadid Architects© Virgile Simon Bertrand
Building Type: Public Architecture
ZHA’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza is Korea’s first public project that has used 3-Dimensional Building Information Modelling and digital building technologies. The construction requirements were treated as a collection of interconnected spatial relationships throughout the process which defines the social interactions and user’s behaviour in and around the project.
© Virgile Simon Bertrand
The adaptation of the design with the changing brief, the incorporation of engineering and construction needs was made possible with parametric modelling software and design computation. The use of a parametric modelling system improved the efficiency and also assisted in taking design decisions within a short duration of time.
© Virgile Simon Bertrand
The use of digital technology enables the team to control design details with better precision offered than the conventional methods. The cladding of over 45,000 panels in varying sizes and degrees of curvature was made possible by parametric modelling and was designed at greater cost and with better quality.
8. Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles by Frank Gehry
© Gehry Partners and LLP
Building Type – Concert Hall
You cannot say, ‘Parametric’ without Frank Gehry!
Although, parametric modelling software took a fast-paced rather recently in the 21st century. But the Walt Disney Concert Hall was the first-ever parametrically designed buildings.
© Carlos Eduardo
Gehry designed this using a variety of techniques, he combined the usage of sketches and models to think about the exterior. He used various asymmetrical forms to blend into a compact shape; representing the musical movements in a dynamic way. He had to use various parametric techniques too, to make this complex form, a reality. He used computer modelling to study the lopsided entropy of the angles he had created. The computational technique proved to be an asset in the interior and exterior setup.
© Gehry Partners and LLP
He associated with Minori Nagata, an acoustic engineer to maximise the acoustic potential of the hall. Through 1:10 scale models and computer modelling with parametric design, the acoustical clarity was achieved. The structure even had bent ceilings and curved constructions that were solved through computational modelling and parametric techniques.
The Evolving State of Architecture with Parametric Modelling Software …How To Create A Program That Gets Parents Involved
The key, says the district’s superintendent Eduardo Cancino, is to treat all parents as essential, whatever their educational or language background. “In our community, parents have a high level of respect for educators,” Cancino says. “But we work hard to convince them that we need their help. The wisdom of their lives is worth more than any degree.” Cancino offers the following pointers about creating parent partnerships:
The Hidalgo Independent School District rallies parents — many of whom are originally from Mexico and primarily speak Spanish — to help their children succeed in school and move on to college. They achieve this goal by teaching necessary skills to parents, like how to negotiate the U.S. school system and how to speak workplace English.
Have a VisionThe district maintains a three-tiered vision of parent partnership. Parent involvement includes basic volunteering, with parents coming into schools to support day-to-day activities. Another level is parent engagement, in which families become part of site-based decision-making processes. Ultimately, Cancino says, they’re working toward parent empowerment, by which parents have a real voice in how higher education, school financing, and their children’s future careers work.
Know Your Audience“Parent engagement doesn’t come in a can,” says Cancino. “You have to know your community and what’s going to make them comfortable.” In Latino culture, he says, there’s a tradition of comadres (literally “co-mothers,” or close family friends) coming together to drink coffee, cook, and chat. Each school in the district boasts parent centers modeled after this idea, with kitchens, sewing machines, and space to talk. “It’s a place where parents can be secure,” Cancino says. “We say, ‘This is your place, this is your kitchen, this is your home away from home.'” Parent involvement in the school develops naturally when they’re connected to these centers, such as in building much-needed biliteracy by reading to students in Spanish in dual-language classes, preparing college-information bulletin boards, and working with other parents new to the district on long-term planning for their child’s college readiness.
Focus on Building Parents’ SkillsAt each campus, parent liaisons not only encourage other parents to volunteer but also provide them with the know-how to navigate the often-unfamiliar landscape of U.S. schools and support their children in life and academics.
The district provides information more formally, too, by holding frequent workshops on topics such as conflict resolution, nutrition, student assessment, and financial aid for college.
Parents can also join the four-year Parental Career Pathways Academy, a partnership between the district and South Texas College. Participants take two years of English-language acquisition, and then they can continue with either occupational skills courses or GED and college-entrance exam-preparation classes, giving them a variety of opportunities for postsecondary education.
Be Practical, and Avoid Letting Logistics Get in the WayHidalgo focuses on working around obstacles to get things done. When principals asked if they could add stoves to parent centers, the district simply asked schools to relocate the centers to the edges of campus so that adding ventilation would be easier. When the district started the parent academy, it struggled with finding the best class times for working parents. South Texas College, which provides the instructor and the facilities, agreed to multiple sessions, in the morning and evening. And when the district ran into obstacles with transporting parents to the college, it found an empty classroom on one of the elementary campuses and offered the classes there, where parents had easier access.
Prioritize Parent Partnerships in Your BudgetsThe cost of the Parent Career Pathways Academy is covered by South Texas College and a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, with the district providing facilities and any needed transportation. For other parent involvement programs, the district pays out of its general fund. “It’s not easy,” Cancino says, “but it’s an investment we make.”

What makes paid social campaigns effective?
Where are your opportunities for improvement?
On October 27, I moderated a Search Engine Journal webinar sponsored by Similarweb and presented by Amy Bishop, Owner/Marketing Consultant at Cultivating Marketing.
She shared three steps for investing wisely and winning in your market by creating paid social campaigns that convert.
Here’s a recap of the webinar presentation.
Step 1: Understand Your Audience + Their NeedsTo know your audience better, ask yourself these questions:
What are they solving for?
Where do they get their information?
Which characteristics make them a good prospect?
What are indicators that they are in-market?
Who or what influences them?
What else do we know about their demographics & firmographics?
Build Your Audience ProfilesGather Data From Facebook Audience Insights
Facebook Audience Insights can give you all the information you need to build customer profiles, like the one below:
Identify top purchaser demographics
Identify interests to target
Further segment by layering interests
Monitor performance to flesh out and validate personas
RSVP → Learn How To Turn This Data Into An Audience that Converts.
Gather Data From LinkedIn Targeting
In addition to just learning your audience’s job titles, there many more affordable and precise qualifying factors that you can learn about your audience on LinkedIn:
Affiliations and publications that your target market follows
Skills
Company size
Industry
Seniority level
Test different attributes in different campaigns to see what works best for you.
Align Your Content With Your Audience’s NeedsOne way to discover your audience’s needs is to leverage Broad Targeting. This type of ad targeting helps you get a good idea of where your audience is within a sales and marketing funnel.
RSVP → Learn How Broad Targeting Can Help Your Conversion Rates.
If you already have details on your target audience’s needs, it’s time to consider where people are in the funnel when targeting them.
This will help you understand how to build out content that matches the intent of each section of the funnel. The closer the content matches, the more likely the prospect is to convert.
For example, if a portion of your audience was previously in the “Top of Funnel Targeting” section, use Amy’s list below to discover what type of targeting and content should be lined up for their journey into the “Middle of Funnel Targeting” section:
Top Of Funnel Targeting Suggestions
Interest-based targeting
Demographic targeting
Cold prospect lists
Broad lookalike audiences
Account-based marketing
Middle Of Funnel Targeting Suggestions
Warm custom audiences
Video viewers
Followers of your page
People that engaged with posts or mid-funnel content
Bottom Of Funnel Targeting Suggestions
People who abandon carts or forms
Visitors of high-intent pages (ex. pricing)
Viewers of specific products and services
Low-funnel custom audiences
By focusing on each part of the funnel, you could drive qualified traffic at lower costs and higher conversion rates.
Step 2: Design Creatives That Work Make A Good First ImpressionAlways put your best foot forward. Professional-looking images go a long way.
When you design creatives, make sure that they flow in a way that makes sense for a prospect.
Most people read in an F-shaped pattern.
If you put things in creative, think about how you can make it easy for readers to scan and understand what you’re selling.
There are free tools like Canva or other low-cost subscription tools that are great for designing social creatives.
Make Your Value Proposition ObviousLet your audience know exactly what they are getting. Be clear and concise with your copy and imagery to help prospects convert faster.
This ad makes you quickly understand that the flooring is waterproof, and it conveys that message instantly even without the text.
An MIT study found that the human brain can process an image in as little as 13 milliseconds, so the visual creation of your ad is most likely to grab the attention of your market.
Pop Quiz 1: Which Ad Performed The Best?
The first ad won.
Why? There’s going to be a ton of information in this book. The ad is straightforward about why prospects need the product and what it will do for them.
Pop Quiz 2: Which Ad Performed The Best?
The second ad won.
While the first one may sound clever, the second is straightforward about what it’s going to do for prospects. With a glance, it tells the prospect that it will explain how to boost rankings.
Other High-Conversion Creative Techniques
Maximize Use Of Your Space: Stay away from repeating the same copy in the same ad; use that space to add additional value.
Consider Your Offers: Leveraging sales, discounts, and promos can each increase your average order value.
Leverage Engagement: Use post engagement as a cheap way to create remarketing pools and transition prospects into the middle funnel.
Be Relevant By Knowing Your Audience: A campaign targeting fans of a sports team on merchandise with their logo, for example, would be more likely to convert than logos from another team.
Set Expectations For The Landing Page: The ad creative should directly relate to the landing page.
Test Videos When Possible: Sometimes even just having authentic, low-budget videos can still perform well.
Thumbnails Matter: Ensure that you make an excellent first impression with your thumbnail. Otherwise, people will keep scrolling.
RSVP → Learn How Optimizing Graphics Can Help Bring Cost Per Result Down + See Case Studies
Step 3: Increase Conversion Potential Test Better Qualifying Audiences & LookalikesThe best-case scenario has value-based audiences.
Test Different Lead FlowsHaving multiple touches can be more cost-efficient than just one touch that tries to drive them right into the purchase.
Other High-Conversion Optimization Techniques
Get More Data: Bidding algorithms love data. Try to broaden your targets, even if your ad set is driving conversions; low data volume will cause inconsistent performance and a volatile CPL.
Optimize To A Higher Funnel Conversion: Focus on increased add-to-cart, purchase, and purchase value.
Use Facebook Lead Generation Forms: This can increase lead volume by making conversion quick and simple.
Reduce Friction Higher In The Funnel: Send people to informational content vs. moving directly to demo requests.

Best Database Management Software 2023
Today’s best database management software is the very foundation of a successful data analytics strategy. The database is the powerhouse intelligent repository for organized data – it’s essential for mining data for competitive insight.
Often referred to as a DBMS, a database management system comprises an array of data warehouse tools. Increasingly, the performance of DBMS’s are increased by artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Databases store data using different architectural methods. The legacy standard is the relational database, the SQL method (a mainstay for decades), which uses rows and columns. More recently, the non-relational databases, NoSQL, employs an array of query languages to extract data from the repository.
In either case, the database – now often based in the cloud – is the source that feeds data analytics software. Also typically part of the system are ETL tools, which prep the data before it’s fed into a business intelligence software or predictive analytics program.
Jump to:
There is no such thing as a stand alone database; by its very nature, a database is networked into your larger system. Will the database you’re considering not just work, but work efficiently with your existing infrastructure? The essential nature of interoperability is why many businesses that work with a well known vendor opt to also obtain their database from that vendor.
Both a relational – SQL – or a non-relational database can be excellent choices, it’s just a case of your business’s data handling needs. To over-simplify the issue, is your business more focused on structured or unstructured data? The SQL method excels at structured data, given its format of rows and tables. The NoSQL is a better fit for unstructured data; for instance, much of the multimedia data from social media is unstructured. Pro tip: some businesses buy both NoSQL and MySQL because they know they’ll need to handle both. Some companies sell both database technologies.
Database security is a complex topic, again because a database does not exist in isolation from other elements of a company’s infrastructure. It’s not enough to say “this database is strong for security,” because its relative security or lack of security will be dependent on a company’s overall commitment to technical security. That said, if security is your topmost concern, you may opt for a solution that is ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability) compliant. The ACID framework works to ensure reliability of a database system despite technical snafus.
While it’s generally true that any top tech pro can learn a new system, ideally you want to hire IT staff that is already familiar with your database technology; the technology changes fast enough without needed to learn a new system. This point argues for the more established database vendors, for which there will be larger cohort of experienced pros. However, this “experience factor” shouldn’t override other key factors; if you get a great deal on a top new system, it tends to be worth investing in staff training.
Key Insight: For companies that have the enterprise budget, this remains a leading choice, possibly the top choice, in databases.
There is no name more synonymous with enterprise database software than Oracle. And this ultimate legacy vendor isn’t resting on its laurels. The Oracle DBMS remains an evolving solution, with a passel of automation tools to handle key tasks like security and partitioning. In keeping with the times, this more recent functionality in the Autonomous Database is fueled by machine learning. This all adds up to a fast, highly stable database solution, with sophisticated tools and a compelling security setup. Additionally, Oracle has a solid reputation for layering on upgraded tools and features to move their platform forward.
The company’s flagship solutions include the Autonomous Database, which is a dbPaaS solution, Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, and the open source MySQL.
Pros:
Sophisticated, mature database platform that remains the clear choice for large enterprise with a sufficient budget.
Existing clients tend to be loyal over many years.
Cons:
Some customers say licensing could be simplified.
Not known for great support.
In this point in the great race for dominance in the high end database market, Microsoft is setting the pace. The software giant has seen significant jumps in revenue in recent years. Most important, Microsoft’s strength in the cloud helps its database business. Its Azure cloud platform helps drive enormous growth, featuring the Azure Cosmos DB and a vast number of relational database instances. Key fact: many enterprises use more than one of Microsoft’s database solutions.
Also significant relating to how the cloud has driven Microsoft database success: the Azure Database Migration Service has seen a veritable torrent of migrations.
One of Microsoft’s historic strengths is that it seeks to make its products easy to adopt. For its database platform, the company has designed it to be easy to program. For those customers who want to bulk up their datacenter, Microsoft offers its Analytics Platform (which interoperates with various databases) as an appliance.
Pros:
Given that many companies are already Microsoft-centric, these database solutions will interoperate well; finding skilled operators will be relatively easy.
Solid reputation for good support
One of the top two cloud platforms, which plays well with the ever growing use of cloud in enterprise.
Cons:
Some customers have complained about high prices.
The company’s rapid pace of innovation means that some features released early continue to need refinement.
Key Insight: The top player in the cloud leverages this strength to grow its database market share – with astounding success.
Viewed over the scope of years, AWS’s runaway success in the database market is nothing short of amazing. The database, after all, was historically the strength of legacy IT vendors who focused on the datacenter, like Oracle and Microsoft. However, a couple of years back AWS actually topped longstanding database leader IBM in revenue from the datebase sector. And AWS – clearly the dominant leader in cloud – shows no signs of slowing down in its growth in the database sector.
A full portfolio of solutions comprise the AWS database menu, including the Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Aurora and Amazon Neptune. Driving this growth is AWS’s Database Migration Service, which can migrate from any datacenter or competing cloud. This service is continually enhanced, just as is the rest of the AWS environment. Indeed, many customers can hardly keep up with the ever expanding number of new tools (database and otherwise) that AWS releases.
Pros:
A torrid pace of innovation, including full featured database tools that are cloud connected.
AWS’s database offerings are part of an overall enterprise IT offering that is extensive – from AI to analytics – that enable a customer to consider using only AWS.
Cons:
Because Amazon is ambitious and competes in so many areas – chiefly retail, of course, the company’s expansions seem to know no bounds – some customers and partners may be hesitant to work with the cloud giant.
AWS has traditionally been devoted to the cloud, and therefore its database menu is not a clear choice for those companies that want an on-premise solution.
Key Insight: A well regarded legacy solution that offers the ability to efficiently streamline a company’s data handling chores.
SAP’s flagship HANA solution as an in-memory database has a long reputation in the enterprise IT sector as a high performance application. It enables real time data analytics and can bear essentially any workload. It’s available on premise (which is SAP’s legacy strength) or in the cloud. It is known for being able to ingest data at remarkably high rates.
HANA is joined in SAP’s line-up by an array of high end data handling applications, including the Adaptive Server Enterprise and SAP SQL Anywhere. The complete portfolio is known for an efficient, streamlined architecture, reliability, stability, and the sheer power of its data crunching.
Significantly, the SAP database solutions are paired with SAP’s extensive array of data analytics software tools – the interoperability between these two toolsets allows them to serve the needs of even the largest enterprise clients.
Pros:
The maturity and robust design of SAP HANA make it a clear database market leaders.
The SAP solution is known for its ability to perform augmented transactions, that is, to process analytics and database transaction in a single database.
Cons:
Typically geared for large enterprise, the SAP database is not for those with a small budget.
Some customers have questioned the upgrade process, noting that it could be easier.
Key Insight: Not traditionally known as a major vendor for the enterprise, Google is playing catch up to some better establish database vendors – but has made a real investment in this effort
After a slow start in cloud computing, Google appears determined to enlarge its enterprise client base. And customers are noticing. The search giant’s enterprise offerings have gained a reputation for good implementation, stability, and relative ease of use. Its now extensive menu of data and database solutions includes Firebase Realtime Database, Cloud Bigtable, and Cloud Spanner RDBMS. Certainly Google is known in the field of data and data analytics, and has a particularly strong AI and ML offerings, which it’s reasonable to assume will tie into its database offerings in the years ahead.
Additionally, because the company is taking steps to aggressively grow its marketshare, it is known to be flexible it its price negotiations – it’s near the top in this regard. Similarly, Google has inked partnerships with an broad array of allies/competitors in the data and database sectors. It employs an open platform approach that includes many solutions, which is likely to pay dividends for the company – and customers.
Pros:
The company is aggressively committed to growing it enterprise market share, and so its database solutions will likely get major investment.
An open platform approach that focus on partnership and interoperability rather than a closed, exclusive approach.
Clients willing to negotiate will likely find significant flexibility.
Cons:
Unlike some of the enterprise vendors, Google’s database products don’t have decades of product history.
The company profile in the market may still struggle based on its relative newcomer status.
Key Insight: In addition to a high performance database platform, IBM has a highly flexible, multicloud approach with a diverse array of partnerships.
IBM’s long menu of database solutions – from the DB2 AI to the Db2 Warehouse – is well regarded as offering high grade functionality, security, reliability, with exceptionally fast transactions. Among the leading database vendors, it is one of the strongest supporters of open source, with a long list of key open source functions incorporated into its data products. And IBM acquired Red Hat, the top open source enterprise vendor, further building its open source credentials. Included in this effort are open source solutions like Postgres and MongoDB.
Most impressive, however, is IBM’s strategy of multicloud and partnership openness. Clients can run the IBM database products on-premise, in the IBM Cloud, on AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP, and even Alibaba. Given today’s heterogenous computing environment, with many companies using multiple cloud for different tool sets, this strategy of extreme openness is likely to work well with IBM and its clients.
Pros:
Robust, mature database platform that incorporates machine learning to boost performance.
All encompassing hybrid and multicloud approach means that virtually any database deployment option is supported.
Well regarded for service and support.
Cons:
Some customers have noted that large array of pricing and product menu options can offer complexity.
Key Insight: Traditionally geared for healthcare, Intersystems is leveraging its strong reputation for service to expand into additional markets.
Having focused on the healthcare market, Intersystems – founded in 1978 – has a longstanding reputation as a database provider that offers high functionality, high speed transactions, and top performance. Its IRIS solution enables clients to build ML-based applications that can lessen data silos. It offers database management and enterprise-level analytics capabilities. While it touts its ability to handle healthcare deployments, InterSystems has offerings geared for finance, business and government.
In keeping with today’s heterogeneous cloud landscape, IRIS can be deployed on Microsoft Azure, GCP, AWS and even Tencent Cloud, as well as on-premise, bare metal and hybrid environments.
Along with this multicloud, hybrid deployment focus, Intersystem’s deep strength is in customer support. Its loyal clients tend to speak quite highly of InterSystem’s commitment to client service.
Pros:
A strong player in the database for healthcare market.
Clients tends to be loyal.
Particularly strong reputation for customer support.
Cons:
Because the company has focused on a core vertical, healthcare, it doesn’t have as large of an overall market profile, which limits the total number of IT pros skilled in using its solution.
Key Insight: Based in China, Alibaba is the top cloud and database provider in Asia, but is investing toward enlarging its global marketshare
Having seen rapid double-digit revenue growth (in some cases triple-digit), Alibaba has a database menu that offers more options that virtually any other provider. The strategy seems to be: if there’s a database deployment or mode or approach you want, we’ll provide it. Its AsparaDB solution is available for everything from MongoDB to RDS to PostgreSQL. It offers a serverless MySQL and you can also buy Elastic MapReduce. Furthermore, Alibaba liberally combines open source and commercial database toolsets.
The underpinning for all this is Alibaba’s strength in public cloud; while strength in IaaS doesn’t necessarily equate to strength in database solutions, in today’s cloud-driven world it plays a key factor. Even as many industry observers note that the cloud war is AWS vs. Azure vs. Google, with IBM and Oracle as strong contenders, in reality Alibabi is coming on strong and is on course for continued market growth as top tier IaaS vendor. All of this public cloud strength is already translating to success in the database market. The company’s Apsara Stack offers an on-premise solution that handles data flow through a robust hybrid transfer.
Pros:
A commanding market offering in Asia, with a growing international presence.
A list of solutions so extensive that virtually any client can find a suitable product fit.
A leader in public cloud, which should equate to a ever more robust database offering.
Cons:
Still most focused on the Asian market, which naturally won’t be the best fit for a North American-based customer.
Key Insight: MarkLogic is a solid performer that is well regarded for its performance, chiefly in the nonrelational database sector.
While MarkLogic does not have the high market profile of some of the leaders in the database market, its portfolio is well regarded among those who deploy it. It has a top reputation as a reliable, stable solution that handles many enterprise database needs. Given that today’s businesses are dealing with data from many sources, MarkLogic’s ability to handle structured and unstructured data is a real plus. The company’s data portfolio includes the Essential Enterprise product and the Data Hub Service, which is an elastic DBaaS. There’s also a free developer database edition.
Additionally, MarkLogic is well suited to create multi-modal data hubs, and to create elastic data structures based on the needs at hand, over time as required. The company’s Data Platform is specifically built for the cloud, and as geared for security and flexibility.
In contrast to the many vendors that offer a relational database (for instance, Google’s Cloud Spanner RDBMS or Microsoft’s SQL Server), MarkLogic’s sells a nonrelational database; this means instead of storing data of tabular schema of rows and columns, it stores data in a manner that is optimized for the nature of the data itself. That’s not a plus or minus, but simply something to be aware of as your business selects a database.
Pros:
Well regarded solution known for reliably handling multiple data types.
Allows users to create elastic data structures that can mine semantics as well as structured and unstructured data.
The solution is offered in the leading public clouds.
Cons:
As is true for most database vendors without a “household name” profile, it’s harder for businesses to find a cohort of skilled IT pros that know its system.
Key Insight: With a major commitment to the open source Postgres platform, EnterpriseDB is prized for its cost-conscious, enterprise-level performance.
As a key selling point in a world where data can come in so many flavors, EnterpriseDB offering can handle an extensive array of data formats. Of course it handles data from the cloud leader Amazon Web Services’s S3, but it also has a close relationship with Oracle; its EDB Postgres solution is highly interoperable with Oracle. Additionally, EnterpriseDB ingests data from SAP and the classic Microsoft SQL Server. Bolstering this flexibility is an major list of application extensions.
Based in Massachusetts, EnterpriseDB boasts a global presence, with satellite locations in countries around the world. The company is well liked for its deep commitment to customer service; it offers training and has a solid reputation for support. Perhaps most important, it is well regarded in terms of its ROI; customers see it as enabling significant enterprise value for the price, likely due to the company’s focus on open source.
Pros:
Excellent value for the cost
Deep commitment to open source
Handles a remarkable array of data formats
Cons:
A top performer in the growing Database as a Service market, Redis’s solution can be accessed through any of the major cloud providers. By earning a spot in the DBaaS sector, Redis is positioned to see significant growth in the years ahead.
Offering excellent, high speeds for data ingestion, the DataStax Enterprise offering has a reputation for strong customer support. It sells a nonrelational database that’s available on-prem or from leading cloud vendors.
If you’re looking for a graph native database, Neo4j may be your solution. While some vendors sell a graph extension, Neo4j’s is built into the system itself. Indeed, the company actually developed the Cypher language to drive queries for property graphs.
A major player in Asia, Tencent’s portfolio of database solutions ranges from open source MongoDB to the enterprise classic SQL Server. Tencent could be considered more of a longshot in the enterprise market, but the company is growing rapidly and is committed to serving the business market, so expect its DBaaS solution – known for ease of use – to gain breadth and depth.
Given that Rackspace is a managed cloud services company with a major focus on support, it makes sense that its database offering is well regarded for taking care of customers. It has a full menu of DBaaS offerings and its presents these enterprise building blocks in a clear and direct manner. The company probably won’t lead the database market, but for the right client – typically a company requiring managed cloud – it could be a good fit.
