Apple and IBM have announced an exciting expansion of the partnership started back in 2014 to bring enterprise apps to iOS devices. The latest step is designed to combine IBM’s powerful Watson AI system with Apple’s Core ML framework to create the smartest mobile apps yet developed.

Fortune reports that the Coca-Cola test is intended to see whether it can be used to help field technicians inspect and service vending machines. No specifics were given, but IBM did give what seems to be a relevant example of how the technology can be used, as TechCrunch notes.

For instance, a company may want to help field service techs point their iPhone camera at a machine and identify the make and model to order the correct parts. You could potentially train a model to recognize all the different machines using Watson’s image recognition capability.

This may not be the most exciting application, but it’s just the first step in an approach with enormous potential.

You can build apps that leverage Watson models on iPhone and iPad, even when offline. Your apps can quickly analyze images, accurately classify visual content, and easily train models using Watson Services. Get started with pre-trained Watson models, or customize and train models that continuously learn over time.

The big breakthrough is that the mobile app can do the recognition itself, without the need to send data back to a server. Watson develops the AI model needed to perform the task, which is then converted to Core ML to create a custom app. Effectively, Watson does the hard initial work in figuring out how to recognize the machines, then it teaches Core ML to do the job locally on an iOS device.

Watson’s intelligence comes from the amount of computing power IBM throws at it. It runs on a cluster of 90 IBM Power 750 servers – hardware with a cost of around $3M. To demonstrate an ability to outperform human beings at tasks requiring a high level of natural language processing, Watson competed in – and won – the TV quiz show Jeopardy, beating the show’s greatest champions (video below).

TechCrunch notes that while Core ML may be the junior partner in this setup, it can also help to train Watson.

Over time, the app can share data back with Watson and improve the machine learning algorithm running on the edge device in a classic device-cloud partnership. “That’s the beauty of this combination. As you run the application, it’s real time and you don’t need to be connected to Watson, but as you classify different parts [on the device], that data gets collected and when you’re connected to Watson on a lower [bandwidth] interaction basis, you can feed it back to train your machine learning model and make it even better,” IBM’s Mahmoud Naghshineh said.

IBM said that the partnership with Apple had always been about leveraging the power of big data with mobile devices, and machine-learning would take apps to the next level.

It’s not the first time Apple has teamed-up with IBM’s Watson: back in 2023, the company created a sleep research app that combined ResearchKit with Watson Health Cloud.

Expectations were huge with the event. The entire web was flooded with predictions based on the launch of Apple Watches, iPad Air, and iPhone 12. The major bet had been on Apple’s flagship phone, iPhone 12. Speculations about its features and technical aspects were doing the rounds. Not just this, the screen in series 6 watch gets a little brighter to make it easier for you to check notifications and specs even during the bright days.

Also, the new Red and Blue dials are only available for the Series 6 version. The remaining dials stay common for both the models.

Apple Patents Detail Apple Watch Bands With Skin Texture Authentication And More

Apple has a lot of different patent applications out there, detailing, at least in part, technologies and ideas the company is working on, has worked on, or is considering working on some day. Today has yet another example, this time for the Apple Watch.

Patently Apple has the report this week, detailing new patents that Apple has submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The company has been granted the patents by the entity, detailing ideas like an LED progress indicator built into the strap, and, perhaps even more excitingly, a skin texture authentication feature.

The first of the granted patents (pictured above) deals with that authentication feature. This is a band for the smartwatch that has a built-in sensor, which would be able to authenticate the user based on their individual skin texture:

More particularly, skin texture cracks are generally warmer than the surrounding skin, and hair is cooler than the surrounding skin. By using an IR thermal image sensor as the wrist biometric sensor, hair can be distinguished, thermally, from skin texture cracks by temperature.

Another one of the patents features an LED progress indicator. This would make it possible for the wearer to visually determine how far along they are with a particular task without having to activate the watch’s display.

If that’s not enough, the third patent application approved by the USPTO allows for a self-tightening strap, which could actually adjust its size based on the wearer’s location:

The third Apple Watch patent granted to Apple today is # 10,398,200 that relates to future Apple Watch that provide users with a customized band fit using a dynamic fit adjustment system.

The perfect fit will be achieved for both leisurely times and when the user cranks up their workout and need their watch band to hug their wrist like its one with them as they run or workout.

The band will even assist users to take their pulse by tightening the band to perfection to get that biometric reading just where it has to be and then automatically back off so as to not choke the circulation to your wrist.

How about a process within the two-factor authentication process? Apple has even thought about that:

For example, if a user wishes to access financial details hosted on a banking website, the banking website may require both the user’s credentials and a verification of a number of tightening-loosening patterns sent to a wearable electronic device previously authenticated by the banking website…

In one example, a tactile pattern may be a series of five squeezes of the user’s wrist (e.g., tighten and loosen in sequence). The user may thereafter enter “5” to gain access to the banking website.

Now, as is par for the course with news about Apple patents, nothing is guaranteed to actually make it out of whatever stage of development (or non-development) these features might be in. Even if Apple is considering these new elements for the Apple Watch, it doesn’t mean we will ever see them launch.

The basic concept is that two people can co-own an Apple Card and share/merge their credit lines. This way, they can improve the credit together and get equal benefits.

Designed to help families achieve a healthier financial goal, it simplifies purchase tracking and expenditure management. And all of that on an iPhone with a single monthly bill.

What does Apple Card Family offer?

With its release, Apple Card attempted to transform the overall credit card experience. Apple managed to simplify everything from the application process to add more privacy and security.

Apple Card Family adds all the more perks to the equation, such as:

Add up to 5 people – Now, you can share your Apple Card account with users who are part of the same Family Sharing group by sharing the Apple Card via Wallet.

Share every aspect – Along with building credit history together, both owners also gain the flexibility of a combined limit and share responsibilities of making payments.

Co-owners transparency – You can also check details of each other’s spending from a single monthly bill.

Parental controls – Add anyone who is 13 years or older as a participant to allow them independent spending. You get insights into their purchases and control their purchase limit.

The smart family sharing plan will be available in the US from May. And existing Apple Card customers can merge their accounts, allowing them an even higher shared credit limit while keeping the lower APR.

The card is issued in association with Goldman Sachs, which has the right to make all eligibility and credit-related decisions.

Note: Anyone who is 18 years or older can be eligible as a co-owner and opt for credit reporting. As for users, who are 13 years or older can become participants.

Is Apple Card Family the next best thing?

While I am not a financial expert, the idea seems intriguing. I could surely see the obvious positives that Apple has pointed out.

But would they pan out as smoothly as Apple’s presentation about them or will it meet some potential pitfalls? Well, only time can tell, and all we can do is wait and watch.

Idg Bakes New Apple Show

This summer’s Macworld in New York is cancelled — sort of.

IDG World Expo, producers of Macworld Conference & Expo Wednesday said it has replaced the July event at the Javits Center with a new show called “CREATE.” The event will take place on the exact same days (July 14-18) with an exhibit floor, open from July 16-18.

And they did it with Apple Computer’s blessing.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker said it will still be a major player at the show and is working with Framingham, Mass.-based IDG to help make an “event where our pro customers can immerse themselves in the latest technologies and solutions.”

“It’s time for a change, and time for an event which addresses the increasingly tech-savvy community,” IDG vice president, business development and operations Colin Crawford said in a statement. “We’re very excited about the new event, and hope the creative community is looking forward to a different kind of learning and networking experience.”

Instead of focusing on new hardware and software, CREATE will be filled with educational programs, including one- and two-day tutorials, two levels of conference sessions for beginner/intermediate and expert users, labs and various feature presentations — each with a different focus.

Seminars include, “Editing Techniques for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express and iMovie,” “Music Editing on Your Mac,” and “Graphic Design for Online Gaming Development.” Online registration will be available beginning in April.

What is also vastly different about this show is that there will not be any keynote addresses by either Apple CEO Steve Jobs or any of his executive staff. Apple employee Doug Werner is among many presenters. Apple did not say if any of its other executives would be attending the event.

IDG World Expo vice president of sales marketing and Rob Scheschareg told chúng tôi that the Macworld San Francisco show in January 2004 will remain untouched and should actually expand. “Where we see an opportunity is companies that have not worked with us before,” Scheschareg said. “Such is the case with Seybold. We’ve been talking to them for years telling them the benefits of coming to a Macworld. This most definitely opens the door.”

As for next year’s Macworld scheduled for Boston, IDG said it could only look to this summer and Macworld San Francisco.

The organizer has already smoothed over a tiff with Apple concerning a move from New York to Boston.

But speculation is that now departed IDG World Expo president Charlie Greco played a major role in Apple’s decision to tweak the New York event.

Scheschareg said the choice was motivated more by market factors and not by the “actions of one man.”

Apple Removes Safari Java Support

Apple has finally decided to remove Java support from its Safari web browser, in an attempt to make the application a bit more secure and protect its users from getting exposed while browsing the web. The whole idea behind this decision is as simple as it could be. Until now, the Cupertino-based company delivered Safari with a pre-installed version of Java, which means that Apple had to release its very own patches whenever Oracle updated Java. The same strategy is being used right now by Microsoft for Internet Explorer 10 and Adobe Flash player, but in Microsoft’s case, things seem to be a bit more secure thanks to Adobe’s quick reaction to Flash bugs. Since Java isn’t such an essential web-browsing tool, Apple decided to remove its factory-installed plugin and let users who still need Java to install it manually from the Oracle website. The latest Java for OS X update comes with a feature that uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. Don’t worry though, if you need Java, you’ll know it because Safari now provides a “Missing Plug-in” button and a small download button to get it in a second. NakedSecurity writes that “the only downside is that to acquire the needed applet plugin, you have to install Oracle’s Java runtime in parallel with Apple’s Java.” “This leaves you with twice as much Java on your Mac: Apple’s latest version of Java SE 6, and Oracle’s latest version of Java SE 7. (You can’t get an Oracle Java runtime to match the Apple one – Oracle doesn’t build a 1.6.0-flavoured Java for OS X because that’s seen as Apple’s job),” Paul Ducklin of security company Sophos explained.
