Suggested April 2024 Apple News Curation Will Have Human Editors And That Will Raise Important Questions
Apple hasn’t talked about it publicly, but the company is hiring human editors that will curate content for its upcoming News app and work with publications to quickly surface breaking stories.
When Apple showed off its News app coming to the US, UK, and Australia with iOS 9, it didn’t say much about how the content would be curated beyond publishers submitting their own RSS feeds. At first Apple is just pulling in news from RSS feeds ahead of rolling out publishing tools for creating rich content specifically for the platform, but how will the company present the news to readers? Who will get front-page billing? How will categories and breaking stories be presented? We get a few of those answers in a new job listing from the company seeking human editors for the platform, but there are still questions regarding how Apple will overcome the curation issues it deals with on the App Store for the News platform.
Apple’s job listing notes that News editors will be responsible for gathering “the best in breaking national, global, and local news.” They will also be working firsthand with publications to “drive relationships with some of the world’s leading newsrooms, ensuring that important breaking news stories are surfaced quickly, and enterprise journalism is rewarded with high visibility.” And Apple won’t just be curating stories from the big players. It also mentions a focus on surfacing original content from “the largest to the smallest” publishers. News editors will also track social media for breaking stories, according to the job listing, and “recognize and communicate key content trends to senior management.”
So Apple won’t be relying on algorithms for News, admitting in the job posting that software alone won’t be able to “recognize original, compelling stories” beyond breaking news to curate stories and categories for readers. While Apple’s reasoning for human editors — to present compelling content to readers that its algorithms have a tough time detecting — is valid, it does bring up the question of how Apple could control what we see and how we see it if its News app becomes popular with readers and attracts a large number of users away from competing aggregation services like Flipboard, Reddit and Techmeme.
Techmeme‘s founder Gabe Rivera gave us the hard truth on why being an algorithm-based service like Google News doesn’t make sense for the Apple News app saying, “All news aggregators intended for the mass market need editors, so this makes sense for Apple.” But the flip side of Apple’s human-based curation is that without a separation of editorial and the business, there will undoubtedly be conflicts of interest. Rivera points out that “…as the world’s most valuable corporation, they can’t and shouldn’t be trusted to present well-rounded coverage on many important topics.” Rivera continues, “But most readers won’t care about that.”
Flipboard took a more cautious tack when discussing the matter of aggregation. Marci McCue, head of marketing at Flipboard told us:
…you’ll see us continue to invest in people curating on Flipboard – not just our own editorial staff. That’s why the product is so diverse and the quality of stories can be so rich. Flipboard has evolved from our v1 launch in 2010, where it was a small team here doing all the curation for categories, to now, where there are millions of curators adding content from amazing sources around the web and organizing the content into Flipboard Magazines.
Curating lists of apps is one thing, but having Apple employees curate the news flow could be more controversial depending on how the company ultimately works with select publishers and surfaces content from its preferred sources.

Reports say Intel will announce in February a new smart TV platform and set-top box.
Surprisingly, Intel is not just making hardware; they’re reportedly wheeling and dealing in Hollywood to ink deals with studios that would enable Intel to “unbundle” shows from their networks, so that people could order TV shows without subscribing to a cable package.
One report says Intel will roll out the service city-by-city slowly over time in order to make these deals. They’ll start with small markets, and demonstrate the business viability of their model.
It may also include technologies like high-speed video downloading capability, huge-capacity DVR storage, video-conferencing and many others.
It seems unlikely to me that Intel will be able to pull off the Hollywood deals, and it’s amazing that they’re even trying.
The Intel Media team, as it’s called, has already been working on the project for six months and has spent $100 million developing their ideas. The team is staffed by technology superstars from Apple, Jawbone and others.
There are three notable things about this news.
First, it means that Intel is joining the ranks of major technology companies that have decided to compete directly against its own partners. Others driving this trend include Google, which bought Motorola to compete against its Android handset partners, and Microsoft, which launched the Surface tablets to compete against its OEM PC partners.
Interestingly, Google and Microsoft are two of the main partners Intel is competing against with its TV initiative. Apple is the other.
Google already ships its Google TV smart TV product inside major-label flat-screen TVs from the likes of Sony and LG. And Microsoft already ships its Xbox gaming system, which is evolving rapidly into a smart TV and living room system.
And, of course, Apple is reportedly working on an iTV living room system.
Although Intel partners with Microsoft and Apple on PCs, the company is actually one of the core partners with Google on its directly competitive Google TV product.
Second, it means that Intel is aggressively re-entering the consumer market as a branded product maker, rather than a component supplier.
Note that Intel has sold consumer products before. In 2006 and 2007, the company pushed a media PC concept called Viiv, which went nowhere.
And third, it probably means that some major player — almost certainly Apple — is developing a smart TV system that currently does not include plans for Intel inside.
If Intel was brought in as a partner by Google, Microsoft and Apple, it seems unlikely that Intel would do this. Why is Intel doing this?
To oversimplify, the post-PC world has not been kind to Intel.
PCs, where Intel has a commanding position, are on the decline. Smartphones and tablets, where Intel is not dominant, are on the increase. So the world of computing, for lack of a better term, will slip away from Intel despite its unequaled design and manufacturing prowess, unless the company takes aggressive action.
Meanwhile, the so-called living room systems, which means TV computers that also control home automation and connect to game systems and other devices, are expected to become popular and widespread.
However, the idea that Intel actually believes it can beat Google TV, Xbox and iTV in the consumer market — that it can out-innovate Google, out-sell Microsoft and out-consumer Apple — defies reason.
I think it’s a lot more likely that Intel is working on living room and smart TV to accomplish four things.
Ever since the planet has come to be one huge market, we’ve noticed a continuous shift in how companies happen. It was further fueled by new technology and quickly evolving client expectations. The highly controlled banking and finance industry in recent times has seen that the continuous metamorphosis of its own business models to remain ahead in tumultuous times.

Want to make your content more compelling but don’t know where to start? Don’t overthink it.
What are the first thoughts that come to mind when you’re looking for something specific?
If you connect with the brand, chances are you’ll return to the brand time and time again.
Nobody likes a dull read or boring visuals. How do you connect with your audience and create compelling content?
If you can connect with your customers and create a trusty worthy relationship with them, the retention rate becomes higher and they will remain loyal followers throughout your brand’s journey.
Read on to learn how emotional hooks will make your content 10x better.1. Use Your Content to Tell a Story
Want to keep your audience engaged? Tell them a good story.
Storytelling is a simple but effective tool for grabbing people’s attention and getting them emotionally invested in your content.
Everybody wants to know what happens next, especially if they can identify with the story’s hero. Telling stories about your business can increase your brand’s likability factor.
For instance, you could tell your audience how your business got its start, what kind of challenges you’ve overcome, and how you’re working toward your current goals.
Stories about customers can also be an effective way to connect with your audience. Try putting your storytelling skills to work through case studies.2. Leverage the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)
The fear of missing out is a powerful force. Nobody wants a great deal or a juicy secret to pass them by. If you can create a sense of anxiety or urgency in your audience, you’ll get a reaction out of them.
One good way to use FOMO is to promote a product or a deal for a limited time only. After all, who hasn’t bought a limited-edition product simply because it won’t be available later?
Another idea is to offer an exclusive membership or loyalty program. If people worry about what they might be missing out on, they’ll be more interested in your brand and your product.3. Make Your Audience Feel Special or Powerful
The desire to feel special drives a lot of purchasing decisions. From clothes to gadgets to cars, consumers often buy things just to feel unique or superior to other people. Harnessing this drive is a great way to build a strong image for your brand.
To tap into your audience’s desire to feel special, use your content to paint a specific picture of your product or service: it’s high-quality, distinctive, and a bit exclusive.
For this strategy (and any other emotional marketing strategy) to work well, you’ll need to know your audience.
Content that pushes some people’s emotional buttons won’t work on others, so don’t forget to make audience research an ongoing part of your work.4. Create a Feeling of Belonging
People need to feel accepted, liked, and important. Content that makes people feel like part of an in-group or cause can be very effective for this reason.
One way to make use of the feeling of belonging is to present your brand as a club or lifestyle, instead of just a business.
Look at Apple for a great example of how to put this idea into practice. There’s a major social and emotional component to Apple’s marketing. Some people consider using Apple products to be almost part of their identity.
Your business may not have the same reach as Apple, but you can do the same thing on a smaller scale by creating a strong brand image and nurturing a sense of exclusivity around your product.5. Use Mystery to Make Your Content More Compelling
If you want more eyes on your content, adding a little mystery might be exactly what you need.
Ask a question in your title, and use the body of your content to answer it.
Alternatively, if there are any long-standing unanswered questions in your field, try creating content around them, since people tend to be interested in the unknown.6. Promise to Help Your Audience Achieve Their Goals
Goal-setting and personal achievement are highly emotional topics.
For most people, there are desires, fears, and feelings of self-worth tied up in even the most pedestrian goals. If you can figure out what your audience wants most, you’ve got a direct route to their emotions.
Offer to help them get what they want, and they’ll see you as an ally – and probably make a purchase.
To find the right angle with this approach, it’s especially important to do audience research. Try to talk directly with your audience by polling or interviewing them.
Then incorporate your findings into your content, highlighting how your product or service can help your audience get what they want out of life.7. Use Humor
Marketing doesn’t have to be serious all the time. In fact, including humor can be great for your brand’s image.
Laughter is a great way to form an instant connection with someone. It also shows that your brand doesn’t take itself too seriously.
If your content has felt a little flat lately, try creating a humorous piece or two, and see how your audience receives it.
Keep in mind that while humor is versatile, it isn’t right for every situation. Know what’s appropriate in your field, and be careful not to say anything your audience might find insensitive or offensive.
In addition, be careful that your humor doesn’t stifle your brand’s authentic voice.8. Surprise Your Audience
If you think your content might not be memorable enough, add an element of surprise. Are there any common misconceptions in your field that you can break down?
What about surprising facts that most people wouldn’t believe at first?
Challenging someone’s ideas or changing their mind on an issue is a great way to get them to remember your brand.9. Incorporate Pop Culture Into Your Content
Using pop culture references can instantly make your content more interesting to a lot of people.
Research shows that 28% of the most successful businesses have pop culture featured somewhere in their marketing campaigns.
For example, Google used the classic holiday film Home Alone, featuring Macaulay Culkin, to promote Google Assistant.
Think about what types of entertainment your audience likes, and choose pop culture references that will establish a feeling of common ground with them.
Try including references to classic TV shows, new blockbusters, or even memes – just be sure not to infringe on any copyright laws. The Takeaway
Emotion is the key to creating content that’s both memorable and effective.
Targeting positive emotions, such as amusement, empowerment, and a sense of community is usually a good strategy. But you can also use negative emotions like anxiety to spur your audience to act.
Try incorporating one or more of these highly effective emotional hooks into your next piece of content – you might be surprised at the reaction you get from your audience.

Work is not a separate entity, as most people think. Everything affects everything. Thus if you don’t nurture some daily habits, they will affect your work life too.
Start Your Free Personal Development Course
Effective resume making, job hunting, campus recruitment training & others
Let us explain.
Suppose you get up late every day. Thus you do everything in a hurry. And even after trying so hard to come to the office at the right time, you miss it every day. Your boss gives a glance at you that feels like more than saying something bad. But still, you don’t have a clue what to do.
These daily habits are all personal but will help you become a better professional along the way.Daily Habits that Will Make You Successful at Work Taking Enough Sleep
Now we know that you will not consider this to be something of value. Thus we started with this.
Research shows that if we don’t take enough sleep and keep on depriving ourselves of an average of 8-9 hours of sleep, then our brain cells don’t generate new brain cells. But if we take the time to sleep and sleep at least 8-9 hours per day, our brain creates new cells.
You have heard about people who cram all night and sleep little. Society calls them heroes, but they are not. To properly function as a professional, you need to have enough sleep.
As it’s one of the most obvious things, people tend to avoid this pillar of daily habits. But you shouldn’t. If you want to grow as a professional, try to be sustainable instead of trying to get some quick fixes. Sleep tight every night. Yes, this is one of the most critical daily habits you must nurture.Making a Daily List of Tasks – Daily Habits
You may have heard this expression – what gets scheduled gets done. But they don’t tell you who does the scheduling gets the most done. Thus we include it as one of the best daily habits lists. And this is also about the list.
You just need to keep a small notebook and a pen, and you’re done with this daily habit.
Once you reach the office, don’t do anything before you do this. Sit on your chair, put the notebook on your desk, and write down 3-5 most important things you must do today. You would say this is one of the simplest daily habits, but let’s see what researchers have to say about it!
Research says that managers prioritize their daily work are much more successful than those who cannot figure out the day’s most important tasks.
If you leave everything else and want to improve your productivity, this is one of the most crucial habits you should nurture. Do it for a week. You will see the difference.Habit of Single-tasking
It’s being proven that now the average attention span of a human is merely 8 seconds. Imagine that you’re reading a page of a daily habits book, and if it takes around 96 seconds to read, then according to research, you will be distracted at least 12 times in 1 minute 36 seconds.
Now after reading this, you would say – it’s childish to think we need to do single-tasking as one of the most important daily habits.
But let us explain first.
Getting distracted is a habit, and if you can wire your brain for distraction, gradually, you can also rewire your brain for focus.
Focus is the ability to concentrate on one task single-mindedly. Focus is a good name for single-tasking.
If you’re struggling with making your day productive, you should do this above anything else. Select one easy thing that doesn’t require much focus and do it without looking at any other things. And then increase the difficulty as you go along.Solve One Problem
If you’ve been in the professional world for some time, then we don’t need to tell you that problem-solving is one of the great skills every professional should possess. But what if you don’t need to exert much effort to make it automated? Would you call it one of the most notable daily habits you should nurture?
Write the solution in your handy notebook as you solve the problem. This is one of the most critical daily habits most people ignore, but it can transform your life as a professional.A Review of the Day
On the surface, this wouldn’t look like one of the most important daily habits. But hang on. Once we explain, you will understand why this one habit can revolutionize your professional life.
How would you improve a thing? You would say by realizing that something is not done rightly. How would you know that something is not done rightly? Yes, simply by looking back.
Once your day is over, don’t leave the office. Simply stay put some more time. Take out your journal. Put your thoughts down in your journal about the day. And write about what you liked about your day and what you didn’t like. Do you want to improve anything in your day tomorrow? If you realize you must improve one or more things the next day, this daily habit will serve you.
Its job is to make you realize. That’s all. Practice one of these significant daily habits, and you will see that you will improve greatly in a year or so.Being Grateful
This is one of the best habits one can master. This is a two parts process.
First, as you get up in the morning, take out your journal and write down 3 things you’re grateful for. If you do it every day, make sure that you write 3 different things each day. If you write family, your job, and your home on the first day, on the second day, you need to write 3 other things, not the same.
This way, you can expand your “gratefulness” horizon. Day after day, you will keep on being grateful for new things. The idea is not only to write the items on paper. The search for the good in your life will help you the most.
The second part you have to do at the end of the day. When you’re at home or leaving the office, write down 3 things you’re grateful for today. It may be anything from having a great conversation with your peers or getting an idea about improving your communication skills. If you do that, you can end the day with a positive mindset.
Daily habits are easy to master. You only need a little time daily and a daily commitment to improving your professional and personal life. Being grateful every day is also one of the best daily habits you can master. This simple habit will help you reduce stress, become more joyous and fight anxiety. Start this now to see the benefits.Catch People Doing Things Right
Most of us catch ourselves and people doing things wrong. It’s said that a person’s character can be understood by the mere act of what he catches every day. If you are one of those who are very critical about your own actions and the actions of others, this habit will help you get rid of that.
At any moment during your work hours, even if you find faults, ignore them for some time (if they don’t harm greatly). Rather find at least one thing right about each person. If you can even find one right thing in a person per day, your mindset will drastically change over a period of time.
What we focus on expands. Thus, when we can focus on the right things most of the time and make it a habit, it will naturally expand. This is one of the daily habits you shouldn’t miss. It’s super easy. The only thing you need to do is to tweak your thoughts.Teach
Yes, we understand that all daily habits can’t always be mastered. But few you can pick up and do. Daily habits are like tiny actions to get extraordinary results over time. Teaching is one of them. People may call you a preacher, but that shouldn’t stop you from teaching people interested in learning from you.
If you have a lot of experience as a professional, you can teach your juniors how things should be done. Not everyone will be interested in learning, but you don’t need to teach them. Teach those people who are interested to learn.
It’s said that when you teach, you learn better. Make it one of the most important daily habits you practice every day. Filter out people who are not interested. Teach people who are eager to know all you have to teach them.Learn
Learn every day. If you learn more, you will become a better professional over time. You will know more and be able to implement the processes better. There can be no better daily habit than learning. Yes, include being grateful as well.
If you are new to learning (conscious learning), start with a video. Videos are easy to understand, and as they show things, you learn faster. When you would start out, your attention span to learning would be much less. So, starting with a video is a great idea.
Once you have learned some things (related to your profession) via videos, you can pick up a paperback, or you can start to listen to audio. If you’re new to it, you can devote 15-20 minutes of learning daily. As you grow your learning muscle over time, you will be able to increase your learning time, and the more you will, the better you will get.
Start learning! Make it one of the best daily habits of this year. And you will see your professional life will catapult to a new level.
But don’t start with all of the daily habits at once. Pick one and then follow the principles below.
Choose one easy daily habit.
Create an action plan including time, duration, purpose, and expected benefits.
Limit practice time to 15-20 minutes to avoid getting overwhelmed.
Join an accountability group to increase commitment.
Review progress and course corrections if necessary.
Move on to the next habit after practicing the first habit for at least a month.
Practice these daily habits and follow the process. Within a year, you will be able to see a drastic change in your professional and personal lives.Recommended Articles

Website and server administrators will have to spend considerable time, effort and money to mitigate all the security risks associated with Heartbleed, one of the most severe vulnerabilities to endanger encrypted SSL communications in recent years.
Attackers can exploit the vulnerability to force servers that use OpenSSL versions 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f to expose information from their private memory space. That information can include confidential data like passwords, TLS session keys and long-term server private keys that allow decrypting past and future SSL traffic captured from the server.
At first glance, dealing with this problem appears to be easy: update OpenSSL to the patched versions that should now be available for most operating systems and it’s done. However, taking into consideration the possibility that the flaw might have been exploited by attackers by the time a particular server was patched and that its secret TLS keys might have been compromised, things are suddenly more complicated.First step: which version of OpenSSL was used?
The first thing website owners should do is determine who is responsible for maintaining the OpenSSL software on the servers that host their sites.
“If it is a dedicated server, it is your responsibility,” researchers from Web security firm Sucuri said in a blog post. “If you are on a shared hosting platform, contact your hosting provider to remind them to update their servers.”
Once the OpenSSL installation is patched on the server and attacks are no longer possible, it’s time to obtain a new SSL certificate and revoke the old one to ensure that any private key information attackers might have obtained though the flaw won’t allow them to decrypt traffic in the future.
Website owners should check with the certificate authorities (CAs) that issued their existing SSL certificates about any potential costs involved in re-keying and re-issuing those certificates.Step 2: New certs
Symantec, which operates one of the largest CAs since acquiring VeriSign’s SSL business in 2010, said that it has taken the necessary steps to patch its systems that used affected versions of OpenSSL. “We are following best practices and have re-keyed all certificates on web servers that used affected versions of OpenSSL,” the company said via email. “While there was never an issue with Symantec Certificates, to address the OpenSSL bug we will be offering replacements free of charge for our existing customers and the old certificates will be revoked.”Step 3: Review existing configurations
“Since you have to touch your server configuration and create new SSL certificates, we would recommend that you also go through certificate generation settings and server configuration,” researchers from antivirus firm F-Secure said in a blog post. “Heartbleed is not the only problem in SSL/TLS implementations, a poorly chosen protocol or weak cipher can be just as dangerous as the Heartbleed bug.”
The Open Web Application Security Project’s (OWASP) Transport Layer Protection Cheat Sheet and the SSL/TLS Deployment Best Practices by Qualys SSL Labs might serve as good starting points.
It might also be a good time to consider configuring TLS with Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS), a property of DiffieHellman key agreement protocols—DHE and ECDHE—that are already in use on some large websites, including Google. PFS makes decrypting previously captured TLS traffic impossible even if the server’s private key is compromised and Heartbleed did not affect servers that had TLS configured for PFS.Perfect Forward Secrecy: a potent band-aid
Ivan Ristic, who runs the SSL Labs at Qualys, provided instructions on how to configure Apache, Nginx and OpenSSL with forward secrecy in a blog post in August.
“At this moment, forward secrecy is more crucial than ever,” said Yan Zhu, a staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, in a recent blog post in which he makes the case for wider PFS adoption on the Web. “Now that the details of Heartbleed are public, anyone can use it against servers that haven’t yet patched the OpenSSL bug and changed SSL certificates. It can easily take weeks or months for developers to deploy new SSL certificates, and even so, certificate revocation systems are unreliable and poorly-suited to the modern web. In the meantime, any data you send now to affected servers that don’t support forward secrecy will be open to eavesdropping and malicious tampering as soon as their SSL private keys are exposed.”
Finally, it’s also important for administrators to look at their whole Web infrastructure and not just individual Web servers when assessing the impact of this vulnerability.
For example, even if a Web server runs as IIS (Internet Information Services) on Windows and is not affected by this flaw because IIS doesn’t use OpenSSL, there might be an Nginx server with OpenSSL running as a load balancer for encrypted traffic or as a reverse proxy in front of that IIS server, said Troy Hunt, a software architect and Microsoft’s MVP, in a blog post.
