CarPlay has graduated from a niche upgrade option to a mainstream standard feature in new cars, replacing clunky radio user interfaces with a design very familiar for iPhone users. But before Apple set CarPlay loose in the wild, the world was shown a very different design for Apple’s infotainment feature under a different name.

Eddy Cue previewed “iOS in the Car” at WWDC 2013 as a new feature in iOS 7 — a software update that changed the way iPhone and iPad software was designed. There were in-depth demos of cars on display that let you try iOS in the Car (that wouldn’t happen for another year), but Cue did share a glimpse of iOS in the Car through a series of slides shown on stage.

“What if you could get iOS on the screen that is built-in to your car,” Eddy Cue pitched 15 minutes before the 2 hour-long keynote ended. “When you make a phone call, it will look something like this,” Cue followed up.

‘Something like this’ was right. Nearly every design decision of the infotainment feature would change before it actually shipped a year later — including its name.

The iPhone lock screen-inspired Home screen with its large clock above the date would be replaced with, well, a grid of app icons for launching apps just like the iPhone. Familiarity defeated the more out-of-the-box concept. We also don’t know how the rethought bottom tile app launcher would have scaled for additional apps.

And the bottom centered virtual Home button would relocate to the more easily accessible bottom corner of the driver’s side (depending on the country). The bottom status bar would also morph into a right- or left-aligned status bar (again, depending on country), only showing the battery status when using the feature over a wireless connection.

The brief iOS in the Car presentation included a few polished animations, but was mostly a slideshow of design concepts for apps that would evolve before they shipped.

Here’s a comparison of what Apple showed versus what shipped the following year:

Naturally, it was developer Steven Troughton-Smith who first discovered the totally different ‘iOS in the Car’ user interface before it actually shipped. STS uncovered the new Home screen and Maps app in late January 2014, hinting at a larger design overhaul for the feature.

A few weeks later, Apple announced that ‘iOS in the Car’ would be rebranded to the more compact ‘CarPlay’ that we know today — joining the sibling display projection technology AirPlay — with new cars shipping with CarPlay by the end of the car. The roll out was painfully slow to start, but today CarPlay is available in at least some model in some trim from almost every major car brand on the road.

Aftermarket car display makers starting with Pioneer offered CarPlay as an upgrade to the car you already own by the end of 2014. This made CarPlay much more accessible to consumers since there were only a few cars with CarPlay as an option and buying a brand new car is expensive.

Pre-configured CarPlay had benefits like turning off A/C fans when using Siri to improve dictation, but the aftermarket CarPlay experience was enough for us to review the original CarPlay experience in 2014.

CarPlay’s design has seen plenty of changes since it actually shipped. In a few months, we expect to see rumored updates to the CarPlay experience that were originally planned for iOS 12, a change that might mean more design tweaks.

But no design change has been as dramatic as the one between iOS in the Car being announced at WWDC 2013 and CarPlay shipping in iOS 7.1.

Reuters: Apple Car Could Begin Production In 2024 With ‘Breakthrough Battery Technology’

Apple Car rumors have been floating around for years, and a new report from Reuters today shed more light on the highly-secretive project. According to the report, production of the electric Apple Car could start as early as 2024, and Apple is once again planning to build its own branded vehicle.

The Reuters report explains that central to Apple’s strategy is a new monocell battery design that “bulks up the individual cells in the battery and frees up space inside the battery pack by eliminating pouches and modules that hold battery materials.” This battery design would allow for more active material to be packed inside, potentially offering longer range, the report says.

Furthermore, Apple is examining lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry for its vehicle, Reuters reports. Tesla has also indicated it has plans to use this battery technology, as our sister site Electrek reported earlier this year. LFP batteries offer lower-energy density than other types but are less prone to overheating and don’t use cobalt.

Apple’s technology could also “radically” reduce the cost of batteries, the report adds.

Shifting strategies

Recent reports had indicated that Apple would likely focus on developing a self-driving system, then working with another auto manufacturer to implement the system. Today’s report, however, says that Apple is once again planning an Apple-branded car.

The report cites two people familiar with Apple’s plans and says that since a shakeup to the Project Titan team in 2023, things have “progressed enough” that Apple now plans to build a vehicle for consumers.

It remains unclear who would assemble an Apple-branded car, but sources have said they expect the company to rely on a manufacturing partner to build vehicles. And there is still a chance Apple will decide to reduce the scope of its efforts to an autonomous driving system that would be integrated with a car made by a traditional automaker, rather than the iPhone maker selling an Apple-branded car, one of the people added.

Apple Car might also feature LiDAR sensors for scanning different distances, similar to the most recent iPhone and iPad models. Apple is reportedly working with outside partners for “elements of the system,” including the LiDAR sensors. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has referred to LiDAR as a “fool’s errand.”

The Reuters report cites an anonymous person who worked on Project Titan. “If there is one company on the planet that has the resources to do that, it’s probably Apple. But at the same time, it’s not a cellphone,” the person reportedly said.

”It’s next level. Like the first time you saw the iPhone,” that person said of Apple’s battery technology for Apple Car.

The potential for delays

The Apple Car/Project Titan rumors have ebbed and flowed over the years, and the project appears to be continuously evolving in scope. Just recently, Bloomberg reported that Apple has shifted the leadership of its self-driving car project to John Giannandrea, its senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy.

Today’s report is some of the deepest details we’ve gotten on Apple Car recently. While production could begin in 2024, the report does caution that pandemic-related delays “could push the start of production into 2025 or beyond.”

On November 17th, Apple will welcome the general public to its expansive new campus for the first time, marking an important milestone in the history of the company. This isn’t the first time Apple has moved their campus, though. Let’s take a look back at the corporate offices that preceded Apple Park.

Apple’s new campus is a record breaking architectural project, featuring the world’s largest panels of curved glass together enclosing the world’s largest naturally ventilated building. The adjacent Steve Jobs Theater features the world’s largest carbon fiber roof.

This impressive display of design and engineering is surrounded by thousands of trees dotting the landscape, most of which were carefully transplanted to the location. Inside the carefully controlled environment of Apple Park, one could forget that Apple’s original headquarters is just a few miles down the road.

2066 Crist Drive, Los Altos, CA

Apple’s first “campus” celebrated its grand opening with little more fanfare than the opening of a garage door. The story of Apple’s founding in his family’s garage in Los Altos is practically a legend at this point, portrayed in movies and a popular destination of Apple fans visiting the area. Today, the home is a protected historic site, but when the ranch-style house was built in 1952, it was just another one of the countless homes popping up among the orchards of the Santa Clara Valley.

Steve Wozniak has called the legend of the garage somewhat of a myth, downplaying its importance in the formation of Apple. According to Woz, much of the work on the Apple I was done at his desk at Hewlett-Packard, and by Steve Jobs in his bedroom. Needless to say, Apple quickly outgrew the garage and moved on.

In 1977, as the small team at Apple was busy working on the Apple II, the company moved into their first real offices in Cupertino. Employees began to call the offices the “Good Earth” building, after a Good Earth restaurant located next door. Some early documentation shows Apple’s address listed as 770 Welch Road in Palo Alto, but the offices of the Good Earth building are of much more significance.

While you can no longer eat at the Good Earth restaurant, Apple’s own Caffè Macs Alves is located just down the street from these offices today.

10260 Bandley Drive, Cupertino, CA

Apple found themselves in need of even more space in 1978. As the company grew, additional office spaces were purchased, rented, or built to fit the requirements of Apple’s rapid growth. Most of these spaces are still under Apple’s control today, as the company’s footprint in Cupertino grows ever larger.

The third campus Apple called home was located on Bandley Drive, within walking distance of both the “Good Earth” building and today’s Infinite Loop. Apple began occupying the space on January 28, 1978. From the road, Bandley 1 looked like any other 1970s office complex in Silicon Valley. The design was influenced by Spanish architecture, with adobe walls and a faux terra cotta roof. A floorplan of the building from 1978 shows just how modest the interior was, too.

It wasn’t until Bandley 3 opened next door in 1983 that the first signs of extravagance began to show. This wing of the campus held the original Macintosh team, and Steve Jobs spared no expense outfitting the office with every luxury. The lobby had a premium stereo system with a cutting-edge CD player. Skylights lit the ceiling above. Jobs eventually parked a BMW motorcycle and a Bösendorfer piano in the lobby, the latter of which, still resides at Apple’s campus today.

Bandley 3

Bandley 3 (and several other buildings on and adjacent to Bandley Dr. are occupied by Apple to this day. Bandley 1, however, is now split into several professional office spaces and is known as The Bandley Center.

The move to Mariani One, as the building is called, would be Apple’s last major campus move until the construction of the Infinite Loop complex over a decade later. Mariani One was built in 1981, and occupied by the time Steve Jobs was photographed standing on top of the campus sign by Diana Walker in 1982. Like the majority of its other offices in Cupertino, Apple continues to occupy Mariani One today, interrupted only in 1996 when a lease was not renewed on over 100,000 sq ft. of the facility. During this time, Apple’s financials were suffering greatly and the company needed to reduce its footprint.

Just prior to the construction of Mariani One, Apple opened their first facility in Cork, Ireland. Steve Jobs was interviewed in 1980 by the TV station RTE about the company’s international expansion. Apple has been in the midst of an attempt to build a $1B data center in Ireland since 2023 and recently gained the approval to move ahead.

After being removed from Apple in 1985, Steve Jobs founded NeXT, Inc., which operated until being purchased by Apple in 1997. Although not officially Apple buildings, NeXT occupied two impressive campuses throughout its lifetime. The first was located in Palo Alto, and the second in Redwood City. Both featured designs by famous architect I.M. Pei, who also designed the glass and steel pyramids of The Louvre in France, near where Apple now operates a retail store.

1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA

The street address we recognize so well today didn’t even exist until 1992, when Apple began building its Infinite Loop complex as a R&D facility. When completed in 1993 by The Sobrato Organization, the 856,000 sq. ft. campus was spread across six connected buildings. Apple opened their company store at 1 Infinite Loop to the public for the first time on March 13, 1993. It wasn’t until 1997 and the return of Steve Jobs to Apple that Infinite Loop would become the company’s official headquarters.

Today, Infinite Loop looks largely the same from the outside with a few notable exceptions. The “Icon Garden” was a favorite campus feature of many employees, located to the right of building 1. Large pixel art statues of various Mac OS tools and icons stood here, including Clarus the DogCow.

In 2023, Apple closed The Company Store for renovations. Upon reopening, the entire wing was remodeled in harmony with Apple’s new store design philosophy, spearheaded by Angela Ahrendts. For the first time, the store began to sell Apple’s retail products in addition to campus-only exclusives.

1 Apple Park Way, Cupertino, CA

Apple Park, known originally as Campus 2 and nicknamed “The Spaceship,” was first revealed in renderings by Steve Jobs on June 7, 2011. Jobs presented his proposal to the Cupertino City Council in what would be his last public appearance.

The new campus is located on a site previously owned by HP. Apple began demolition of HP’s buildings in early 2014 (with the exception of the Glendenning Barn), and construction began shortly after. Apple Park is perhaps one of the most thoroughly documented building projects ever, with dozens of interviews, photo galleries, and drone flyovers detailing the 175-acre facility.

Throughout the construction process, Apple completed several smaller corporate projects both locally and across the world. One of note is the aforementioned Caffè Macs Alves, which was built in 2014 as a “taste of Campus 2.” The design of the restaurant closely mirrors the styling of Apple Park, but on a much smaller scale. Both were designed in collaboration with Apple by the architecture firm Foster+Partners. Apple also began an expansion of their facilities in Austin, Texas in 2012, with employees occupying the first phase of the project in early 2014. Another stunning Apple office opened in Herzliya, Israel in 2023.

In September 2023, Apple held their first event at Apple Park, inside Steve Jobs Theater. The campus visitor center, located just across the street, has a grand opening date of November 17th.

In many ways, Apple Park feels like first campus truly fit for the company. Apple prides themselves on the integration of hardware and software to create a seamless experience. For the first time, their own facilities will live up to this goal. Steve Jobs spent the final years of life working to make Apple Park a reality, and its completion marks the realization of a goal set in motion over 40 years ago with the opening of those tiny offices on Stevens Creek Boulevard.

What’s New In Ios 14.6 Rc? A Look At Forthcoming Apple Music Settings

As documented in its release notes, iOS 14.6 includes support for Apple Card Family and Podcasts subscriptions, two service enhancements that will go live once the release goes public. But iOS 14.6 includes several other noteworthy updates, including our first look at updated Music settings for the just-announced Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio and high-quality Lossless audio for Apple Music. The release also gives us our first look at the upcoming Beats Studio Buds, among other things. Watch our hands-on video walkthrough as we consider what’s new in iOS 14.6 RC.

Apple Music updates: Lossless and Dolby Atmos

The big news yesterday was Apple’s expected announcement regarding Lossless Audio quality in ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) across the Apple Music catalog. Apple Music’s Lossless tier begins with 16 bit at 44.1 kHz CD quality, and ventures up to 24 bit at 48 kHz and is natively playable on Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.

As 9to5mac explains, 1:1 Lossless Audio will not be playable on AirPods, which means it will require professional and/or specialist wired headphones to enjoy. Hi-Resolution Lossless, which ramps up the quality to 24 bit at 192 kHz, takes it even further and will require an external DAC (digital-to-analog converter).

In additional to Lossless Audio, Apple is also launching support for Spatial Audio via Dolby Atmos to give users the ability to listen to select albums in an immersive 3D sound stage. Spatial Audio for Apple Music will also launch in June, with thousands of songs gaining support. Spatial Audio will require headphones featuring the W1 or H1 chip, which includes AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and several varieties of Beats headphones.

Several of the preference panels in the Music app settings will be changed in iOS 14.6 once Lossless and Dolby Atmos support launches next month. A new Audio Quality panel will feature a new switch to enable Lossless Audio.

Apple states that Lossless files preserve every detail of original audio, and that turning on Lossless Audio will consume significantly more data, hence the feature isn’t enabled by default, but is opt-in. The good news is that even on cellular connections, users can enable High-Resolution Lossless playback, but Apple makes sure to fairly warn users about the data usage implications.

Another new section that will be found under the Audio heading in iOS 14.6 is the new Dolby Atmos panel. Dolby Atmos playback features three settings in iOS 14.6: Automatic, Always On, and Off.

Automatic will play in Dolby Atmos and other Dolby Audio formats whenever connected to capable outputs like AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max (when spatial audio is enabled), and supported Beats headphones or Apple devices.

Updated cellular settings labels

Sticking with the Apple Music-centric theme, iOS 14.6 features updated cellular details for streaming non-Lossless Apple Music via a wireless carrier. Inside Settings → Music, you’ll find a new Audio heading, which groups Cellular Streaming, EQ, and Sound Check underneath.

The Cellular Streaming option, previously called “Cellular Data” in older versions of iOS, features a simpler structure with three options: None, High Efficiency, and High Quality. High Efficiency playback over cellular uses HE-AAC with low data usage, while the High Quality option uses AAC 256 kbps bitrate.

Beats Studio Buds

iOS 14.6 RC gives us the first look at Apple’s forthcoming Beats Studio Buds. The buds, which are truly wireless and stemless, will feature noise cancellation and will be available in at least three colors: black, red, and white.

The Beats Studio Buds feature a wireless charging case, with a passing resemblance to the design of the AirPods Pro. The outside of the case features a Beats logo, and a LED status indicator beneath, while the inside of the case features a dedicated button that could be used for manual pairing.

Like other Beats earbuds, the Beats Studio Buds feature replaceable ear tips for a more ideal fit and noise isolation. It’s possible that each ‘b’ button on the individual earbuds, which feature a glossy surface, may function as a touch panel for activating features like noise cancellation, and/or interfacing with Siri.

Apple will likely officially announce the Beats Studio Buds to correspond with the release of iOS 14.6 and Apple Music Lossless, which means that we’ll probably see the Beasts Studio Buds arrive in June.

Apple Digital Master branding

Starting with iOS 14.6 RC, albums ‘Mastered for iTunes’ will now say ‘Apple Digital Master’ instead. This makes sense given that Apple has largely moved on from the iTunes branding.

Along with Apple Digital Master branding, users can expect the aforementioned Lossless and Dolby Atmos branding to appear in the same area for compatible albums in the Apple Music library.

Updated App Tracking explainer

Apple now explains in more detail what happens when the Allow Apps to Request to Track switch is disabled in Settings → Privacy → Tracking. In case it wasn’t previously clear, Apple now states that when this switch is off, all new app tracking requests are automatically denied.

In addition to this updated explainer, Apple also explains why App Tracking is unavailable when users see the switch grayed out. When disabled, a note now explains that this setting cannot be changed because a profile is restricting it, or because your Apple ID is being managed, does not meet the minimum age requirements, or is missing age information.

Conclusion

In addition to these changes and updates, users can expect standard bug fixes, along with the official rollout of Podcast subscriptions, and Apple Card Family support. Although not quite on the level of iOS 14.5 in terms of changes and features, iOS 14.6 is a major update from a services perspective. There are multiple ways to remove spaces in Excel. The first way we can remove the extra unwanted spaces is with the help of the FIND and REPLACE options (Ctrl + H). We must put a space and replace that with a Blank (Nothing kept). This removes the spaces anywhere from the selected cells. Alternatively, we can remove the spaces using a TRIM function. This removes the spaces at the start and end of the selected cell content. And we can also use the SUBSTITUTE function, where we can substitute space with blank to remove spaces completely.

Different Types Of Spaces

It may contain extra spaces before text strings in cells, called Leading spaces.

It may contain extra spaces after text strings in cells, called Trailing spaces.

Datasets may contain extra in-between spaces, i.e.additional spaces in between text.

Datasets may also contain Line breaks with extra space.

TRIM function is a prebuilt integrated function categorized under Text functions. It Removes all extra spaces from text except a single space between words in Excel.

The syntax or formula for the TRIM function in Excel is:

The trim function in Excel has only one compulsory argument or parameter, i.e., text.

Text: It is cell content from where you need to remove extra spaces in Excel.

The TRIM function removes the text’s ASCII space character (32).

How to Remove Extra Spaces in Excel?

Removing extra spaces in Excel is very simple and easy. Let’s understand the working of removing extra spaces in Excel with the help of some examples.

Example #1 – Remove Excel Spaces with the help of Find and Replace

In the below-mentioned example, I have a dataset in column D that contains all three types of extra spaces, i.e., Leading spaces, Trailing spaces & Extra in-between spaces.

I have done several character counts for the column D datasets for reference. With the help of the LEN function in column E., I have taken this raw data to another new column (column H) to apply the Find and Replace task.

Now, I have to select the cell range where the Find and Replace parameter needs to be applied to remove extra spaces in Excel.

To activate the find and replace option, press the shortcut key Ctrl + H, find and replace window appears.

It replaces all the blank spaces in the cell.

You can find a difference in character count between both datasets. Where Find and Replace, remove all the blank spaces. In extra in-between spaces content also, it has removed all the blank spaces without retaining a single space between words (This can be rectified with the help of the TRIM function).

Note: This method is only used when you want to remove a leading & trailing type of extra spaces from selected cells or completely remove all the spaces in the data range from Excel.

Example #2 – Remove Excel Spaces with the help of the TRIM Function

For reference, I have done several characters counts for the column D datasets. With the help of the LEN function in column E., I have taken this raw data to another new column (column G) to apply the TRIM Function. The Excel TRIM function removes all spaces from text except a single space between words.

Now, In cell H4, let’s apply a TRIM function.

Now, you can observe in cell H4, where the trim function removes the leading space in that cell.

You can find a difference in character count between both datasets where the TRIM Function removes all spaces before and after the text in the cell (i.e., G4, G5, G6 & G7) & consecutive spaces in the middle of a string in the cell G8 & G9.

Example #3 – Remove Excel Spaces with the help of the SUBSTITUTE Function

It will remove all the extra Excel spaces, including single spaces between words or numbers.

Now, you can observe in cell H4, where the Substitute function removes leading space in that cell.

You can find a difference in character count between both datasets. Substitute Function removes all the blank spaces; in extra in-between spaces content, it has removed them without retaining a single space between words.

Things to Remember about Excel Remove Spaces

Since the extra space is also a character, therefore in ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) encoding, it has code number 32.

Sometimes, the data appears as line breaks which may contain extra spaces between words; To remove those extra spaces, we can combine Excel TRIM and CLEAN functions to Remove the Extra Space of Line breaks.
