Well, there are different types of audio interfaces, and modern circuit boards can have six or more embedded in them. However, this depends on the model, and you may even find comparatively fewer ones on yours. Likewise, a laptop motherboard mostly comes with just one audio port, which can work as both input and output.

Since different audio devices require different connections, it’s essential that you have proper knowledge about these interfaces. In this article, you will learn about all the audio ports found on a motherboard, along with their location and color.

Basically, an audio interface allows the connection and communication of any audio device with a computer. Although the number differs on every motherboard, most modern ones adopt the PC System Design Guide and come with five or six ports.

However, this case doesn’t apply to those motherboards (mainly laptops) with only one dedicated audio interface that can function as both ports. Once you connect the peripheral, the necessary driver is automatically installed and performs as required.

Well, most motherboard manufacturers use standard colors to distinguish the input from output ports. Nonetheless, some do not apply this to their models and instead have just the black ones. Therefore, icons or labels are the best way to identify the interface.

Mic-In Port in Motherboard

Microphone-In or Mic-in is the dedicated input audio port for plugging microphones. This port is present in almost every motherboard and is generally recognized by its pink color. To connect a microphone to the motherboard, you require a 3.5 mm audio jack, which usually comes attached to the audio device. 

Usually, the Mic-In ports come with a pictogram of a mic or, in some models, labeled as MIC. Hence, even if yours doesn’t have this audio interface, you should recognize it without any fuss.

Moreover, you will likely not find the pink port on your laptop’s motherboard. Instead, it has one audio interface that can take in both input (microphone) and output (headphone/speaker).

Line-Out Port in Motherboard

The Line-Out, also recognized as the Headphone-Out or Audio-Out, is an output port that transfers a PC’s audio to speakers and headphones. Usually, it is recognized by its green color and also with a headphone or outgoing sound wave icon. In some motherboards, it may also be labeled “AUX”.

Well, this type of port is suitable for a 2.0-channel system, meaning you can connect any stereo device (headphones or speakers). To connect these audio peripherals, all you need is a 3.5 mm audio cable. 

Interestingly, a few motherboards are equipped with a 6.35 mm, drawing more power to the headphones. Thus, a 6.35 mm audio cable provides comparatively lower resistance and capacitance to support high-end audio equipment.

Line-In Port in Motherboard

Another primary port that comes embedded in most motherboards is the Line-In port. If you’re trying to get audio input signals from an external audio device to record, play, or modify their sound, this should be the one you’re looking for.

Basically, you can connect any audio input peripheral here, like amplifiers, CD/DVD players, MIDI instruments, and many more. In fact, plugging in a microphone will also make it work completely fine. However, we recommend using the above-mentioned Mic-In port for this device as the amplification is much better there.

Moving on, the Line-In port is light blue in color, and you may also recognize this by an incoming sound wave icon beneath it. However, such a port is absent on laptop motherboards, and you’ll need regular audio ports to connect the input audio devices.

CS-Out Port in Motherboard

Center Speaker-Out, or simply CS-Out, is an audio output port found in high-end motherboards that support the connection of surround sound systems. Well, they are orange or lime-colored and can be recognized by the label “c/sub” or a pictogram of a speaker.

To be precise, this is the dedicated interface for connecting a subwoofer, center/front speaker, or soundbar to your TV or even computer. Hence, these devices provide extra bass to your sound system and are perfect for music lovers.

RS-Out Port in Motherboard

Rear Speaker-Out or RS-Out is the audio output port for the speakers behind you or the back of the center speakers. Like the CS-Out, you can use this for connecting surround sound systems.

Moreover, identification of the port is also easy, like the other audio interfaces. All you have to look for is the black port. But in those motherboards that do not follow the color standards, you should check the label “rear” accompanied by a speaker symbol.

SS-Out Port in Motherboard

Another audio output port on the motherboard dedicated to the surrounding sound system is the Side Speakers-Out or SS-Out. In fact, the presence of this interface allows for the setting up a 7.1 audio channel system.

Furthermore, SS-Out can be of different colors – white, silver, or grey. But if your motherboard has no colors in the audio ports, you can check the label that indicates “side” and a speaker icon.

S/PDIF-Out Port in Motherboard

Until now, we’ve only covered the audio ports that work on analog signals. Now, let’s focus on the interface that outputs digital signals, the S/PDIF-Out (Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format), which is present in most modern motherboards.

Unlike the regular ones, these optical ports are square-shaped and may even illuminate lights out of them. Moreover, they require digital optical cables for transmitting digital signals from a PC to an audio output device.

Depending on the model, you may find different types of optical ports on a motherboard. These can be identified using the labels “Digital Audio Out”, “TOSLINK”, “S/PDIF”, etc.

Coaxial-Out Port in Motherboard

Coaxial-Out is another digital output port on a motherboard. Basically, it works very similarly to the S/PDIF-Out port, and the only difference is that it requires a copper or RCA cable to establish a connection with your speaker.

Apart from just the dedicated audio ports, you can also use other motherboard ports that can carry audio and digital signals. These include USB, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

Indeed, USB headphones are getting popular these days, and they even have a microphone attached. In such a case, you do not have to look for dedicated input or audio port; you can simply connect the device to a USB port. 

Likewise, HDMI speakers have also gained popularity in the past few years. Thus, if you’re looking to connect such a device to your motherboard, the correct port you should look for is the HDMI ARC. Unfortunately, this port might be absent on some models.

Connecting your speakers and headphones (open-back or close-back) to the appropriate port isn’t as challenging as one might think. If you already have stereo headphones, you can directly plug the device into the dedicated headphone out port on the motherboard.

Likewise, if you’re trying to connect a home theatre system to your PC, you can use either the optical/coaxial or the standard 3.5 mm ports. In the case of the latter one, you can utilize all the Line-Out, CS-Out, RS-Out, and SS-Out ports.

Suppose you have a 7.1-channel setup (two rear speakers, two front speakers, two side speakers, and a subwoofer). Here, you need to connect the front speakers to the Line-Out, the rear speakers to RS-Out, the side speakers to SS-Out, and the subwoofer or central speakers to CS-Out. You can follow a similar technique to connect 3.1, 5.1, or 6.1 surround systems to the motherboard ports.

Note: The ‘.1’ after each speaker system refers to the inclusion of a subwoofer, which itself is not a speaker but still holds great value in the surround system.

Still looking for something to do during spring break next month? Consider joining one of BU’s Alternative Service Breaks (ASB) trips.

Founded in 1988 and overseen by BU’s Community Service Center, ASB offers students the opportunity to travel to dozens of locations across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada for a week of volunteering with nonprofits working in focus areas from public health, homelessness, and housing to animals, education, and LGBTQ+.

Registration for this year’s trips began in November, but 5 of the 30 trips still have spots available. These spaces are limited and registration closes February 27, so act fast. Prices for the trips range from $375 to $435, and scholarships are available for Pell Grant–eligible students or students who can demonstrate significant financial hardship. The cost covers transportation, food, and housing (typically provided by the host organizations).

Among the trips still open is the one to Nashville, Tenn., which is among the longest running ASB excursions. There, students will work with people with disabilities at United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee, building wheelchair ramps so those with limited mobility can remain in their homes.

Another trip still seeking volunteers is to the rural city of Crossville, Tenn., to work with the Cumberland Trails Conference, building up part of a 300-mile-long foot trail running along or near the eastern edge of the scenic Cumberland Plateau. During an eco-friendly trip to Lake Metroparks, Ohio, students will pitch in on a variety of environmental projects, such as removal of invasive species, environmental cleanup, and working in a wildlife rehabilitation center. And volunteers traveling to Milwaukee, Wisc., will promote environmental education and protection in the city under the auspices of the Urban Ecology Center.

Handy with a hammer and a saw? Consider joining the trip to Louisville, Ky., where volunteers will work on home repair efforts in Louisville’s West End with Hand in Hand Ministries, which provides safe housing, health care, and education programs to vulnerable communities. This is the first time ASB has partnered with Hand in Hand Ministries.

Last year’s ASB had more than 400 participants—volunteers, program managers, coordinators, chaperones, and committee chairs.

Besides the opportunity to give back, ASB trips are a way to meet new people, travel to new places, and open yourself to new ideas, say program veterans.

“There’s something so magical about the bonds that are made with the people you drive across the country with,” says Ellie Hitt (CAS’17), one of this year’s program managers. As a freshman, she volunteered on a trip to Atlanta, with the expectation of meeting more people. It was a life-changing experience. “From then on, I couldn’t shake the ASB fever. In both Atlanta and the next year in Orland, Maine, my mind was opened in such valuable ways,” Hitt says. “I decided to apply for program manager, because I wanted to ensure that each individual coordinator, volunteer, and chaperone had the opportunity to enjoy that same experience.”

Fellow program manager Chris Zielinski (ENG’18) first participated in ASB freshman year, traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico. “My coordinators that year were incredible mentors and inspired me to apply to be a coordinator myself the following year. I ended up coordinating Atlanta last year with a new community partner, Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless, and it was one of the best experiences I could have imagined,” he says. “I’m still close with all of the volunteers from that trip. All of them are involved in ASB again this year, so that kind of retention rate really speaks to the program. I applied to be program manager so that I could give back what ASB has given me: opportunities to grow personally, professionally, and socially.”

Imagine you arrived home late after finishing a busy day’s schedule. Tired and hungry. Having found nothing in your fridge to munch, you start wondering if it would be a good idea to order something online or rush to a near takeaway shop and get something to eat. However, you changed your mind and decided to cook something fast after you found a bottle of Canned Beans in your pantry. With the Canned Beans in your hand, you entered the kitchen, only to realize that you have misplaced the Can Opener! What would you do in such a case? Or, what if you are camping and realized that you forgot to pack the Can Opener! Thankfully, there are quite a few common household items that you can use to open a Can.

In this tutorial, we will show you three simple ways to open a Can without a Can Opener.

Method 1: Use a Spoon to Open the Lid

The lid of most Cans is usually made of a thin sheet of metal, which means you can pretty much use any sharp object available in your kitchen to open the lid. However, if you need to avoid sharp objects for the fear of cuts and wounds, then your best option is to use a sturdy stainless steel spoon. It is the safest method but you may be a little more time-consuming than other methods as you would have to work with a blunt instrument and exert a bit more force.

Step 1 − Place the Can on a solid surface and hold it firmly on the ground with one hand. Hold the spoon tight at its neck with your other hand.

Step 2 − The head of the spoon should touch the surface of the lid. Now, move the spoon back and forth over the lid at its edges, just inside the rim (not at the center).

Step 3 − Repeat the process until you make a hole in the lid of the metal. With the spoon’s blunt edge, it will take some time, but the lid will eventually break after 10 to 15 back-and-forth movement of the spoon.

Step 4 − Now, it’ easy to open the lid completely. Once you have a slit, all that you need to do is to move the spoon around the rim to tear the rest of the lid.

Step 5 − Finally, use the handle of the spoon to lift the cut-out lid up and detach it carefully from the Can. Don’t be casual at this step because the edges of the lid are surprisingly sharp enough to cut the fingers.

Using a spoon is the best option in terms of safety and another reason to use a spoon is that you don’t have to search too hard for a sturdy piece of spoon. You can use a fork in the similar fashion to puncture the lid but it will most possibly damage the tines and points of the fork.

Method 2: Use a Chef’s Knife

You can use the heel of a chef’s knife to open a Can. Avoid using the tip of the knife as it is sharp and may slip accidentally to cause injury

Step 1 − Hold the handle of the knife upright and position its heel on top of the lid near the edge of the rim.

Step 2 − Push the heel of the knife gently to puncture the lid. To get started, firmly grip the handle and position the back corner of the blade (the heel) upright along the inside edge of the can’s rim.

Step 3 − Gently press the heel of the knife into the lid to create a slit. Do not apply too much pressure or try to strike the lid with the knife.

Step 4 − Now, lift the knife up and place it again on the lid, just a few centimeters to the left and right. Repeat Step 3 and create another slit.

Step 5 − Repeat the steps 3 and 4 until you have perforated slits around the rim of the Can. Try to perforate holes evenly at uniform distance around the rim.

Step 6 − Insert the tip of the knife inside one of the slits and lift the lid up gently. The lid will be weak by now and can be easily lifted open.

If you don’t have a chef’s knife, then you can use a small pocket knife or kitchen knife too. Use the tip of the knife to puncture holes around the rim and then gently insert the tip of the knife in one of the holes and lift the lid up.

Method 3: Use a Plier to Open the Can

If you have a plier, then it is quite easy to open a Can.

Step 1 − Hold the Can firmly with one hand, and pinch the plier along the edge of the Can with your other hand.

Step 2 − Move the plier around the top of the Can, pinching its edges around the rim.

Step 3 − Finally, pull the lid up with the plier.

Before using the plier, clean it properly to make sure the food items inside the Can do not get contaminated.

Method 4: Use a Rough Surface

Use this method only when you don’t have a knife or spoon at your disposal. This process is time-consuming and you would probably try it when you are camping outside.

For this method to work, you would require a flat rock or a concrete slab with a rough surface.

Step 1 − Place the top of the Can face down on the rough surface and then rub the Can back-and-forth against the surface.

Step 2 − The ridge of the Can will become weak due to the friction. Keep rubbing the Can until you see traces of moisture on the rough surface, which is a sign that the lid has broken.

Step 3 − Now, press the sides of the Can gently and the lid will open up. Or, you can use a knife at this stage to lift the lid up.

Before opening the lid up, make sure that you use a cloth to clean the dust off the lid, to prevent the tin dust getting into your food.

Method 5: Use a Box Cutter or Tin Cutter

You can use a box cutter or a pocket knife to open a Tin Can −

Step 1 − Place the Can on a flat surface and hold it firmly.

Step 2 − Use the Tin Cutter to cut the top of the ridge at its corners.

Step 3 − Repeat the process around the edge of the Can until you’re able to open its lid.

Use this method when you don’t have other tools like a spoon or a kitchen knife.

Method 6: Use a Flat Screwdriver and Hammer

If you don’t find a Tin Cutter, then a flat screwdriver and a hammer may do the trick.

Step 1 − Hold the screwdriver in your hand and place its head over the lid, inside the rim of the Can.

Step 2 − Now, you can use the flat screwdriver just the way you would use a spoon to open a Can. Or, you can use a hammer to gently tap the handle of the screwdriver such that it pierces a hole in the lid.

Step 3 − Repeat Step 2 and create a few more holes around the edge of the rim. Next, insert the head of the screwdriver inside one of the holes and gently lift the lid up.

Before using the flat screwdriver, clean it properly because you don’t want to spoil the food item inside the Can.


Most of the time, you would not find it necessary to use these methods, as many such Cans these days come with a pull tab that you can use to rip the lid open. However, you may find these tricks handy in an emergency.
