Itćs been officially confirmed today that Apple will use cutting-edge, power-efficient, eco-friendly fuel cells from California-based Bloom Energy startup to power its huge iCloud data center located in Maiden, North Carolina.
Hopefully this move will appease Greenpeace, whose recent report titled How Clean Is Your Cloud slammed Apple over the company’s use of “19th-century coal energy” for its data centers…
Bloom Energy CEO K.R. Sridhar confirmed the news in an interview with CNET:
Apple is an existing customer and they will use our fuel cells in their North Carolina data center.
As I explained in my recent article over at 9to5Mac, these cells dubbed Bloom Boxes are 67 percent cleaner than a typical coal-fired power plant or the grid because they produce electricity from natural gas or biogas.
According to Apple’s website, company facilities in Sacramento, Austin, Cork and Munich are 100 percent powered by renewable energy sources. The iCloud data center in North Carolina is a different story, though.
The CEO notes that no energy is lost over transmission lines as happens with the grid. Specifically, generating power from a natural gas fuel cell reduces carbon emissions by about 40 percent to 50 percent compared to the U.S. grid.
Costing between $700,000 and $800,000 and taking about as much room as a parking space, these fuel cells can generate 100 kilowatts of electric power each.
Sunnyvale California-headquartered Bloom Energy is also in talks to build a 30 MW fuel cell farm consisting of 300 Bloom Boxes in Delaware. For more on Bloom Energy’s next-gen fuel cell tech, check out an awesome in-depth article by GigaOM.
Apparently, Apple intends on using Bloom Boxes for their five-megawatt fuel cell installation. Apple’s 2012 Environmental Update bills the structure as the nation’s biggest non-utility fuel cell installation. Per official plans, it will be located right next to the iCloud facility.
Bloom Energy was originally called “Ion America” when it was founded back in 2002, but got rechristened as Bloom Energy in 2006. It’s interesting that the company was funded by venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins.
If the name rings a bell, it’s because Kleiner Perkins was behind a $200 million fund dubbed “iFund” that invested in startups focused on iPhone software development. The fund helped incubate early iPhone game developers like Ngmoco, itself founded by former Electronic Arts executive Neil Young in July 2008. Ngmoco later got acquired by Japan-based DeNA for a cool $400 million.
Bloom Boxes generate less heat than energy cells used by the US Army so it comes as no surprise that Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is a board member since 2009.
Conspicuously, Powell is also a limited partner for Kleiner Perkins.
The Bloom Boxes are already providing clean energy for several big corporations, such as Bank of America (500 kW), Coca-Cola (500 kW), FedEx (500 kW), Staples (300 kW), Cox Enterprises, Walmart (800 kW), eBay (500 kW) and Google (400 kW).
With the Obama administration putting clean and renewable energy sources on the map, Bloom Boxes are hot pieces of equipment and as such the perfect fit for a demanding client like Apple.
Hopefully, Greenpeace will takes note of this in their next report.

An abnormally shaped red blood cell, the characteristic shape of red blood cells in a person with sickle cell disease.
On Wednesday, rapper Albert Johnson—better known by his stage name Prodigy—passed away at the age of 42 from complications of sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder he’d had since birth. Though some medications can help those with sickle cell manage their condition, no cure or real treatment exists to combat the disease. And while better care in the United States has extended the lifespan of those with the disease, they often face a lifelong battle with pain, infections, and extreme fatigue.
Sickle cell disease afflicts millions of people worldwide; in the United States alone, about 100,000 live with the blood condition. Someone born with sickle cell disease could only expect to live an average of 14 years in the 1970s, and today the average lifespan still only hits 40 to 50 years.What causes sickle cell disease?
Sickle cell disease is a term for a group of inherited blood disorders that affect the shape of a person’s hemoglobin—the protein found in red blood cells that carries and delivers oxygen to the rest of the body.
In genetic terms, the disease is autosomal recessive. For a person to develop it, they must receive two different abnormal hemoglobin genes, one from their mother and one from their father. A few different types of these abnormal genes exist, but for it to develop into sickle cell disease, one of these irregular genes must be a type called hemoglobin S. If a person receives two hemoglobin S genes, then they develop what’s called sickle cell anemia, which is the most common and serious disease in the group.
The disease is so debilitating because hemoglobin is one of the most important proteins in the body. When blood reaches the lungs, its job is to collect and transport oxygen to the rest of your organs, which is crucial for survival. Hemoglobin travels inside red blood cells. These cells are typically disc shaped, a form that allows them to easily maneuver en masse through the narrow twists and turns of blood vessels as they travel through the body. But hemoglobin S is weirdly rod shaped, and because of its large size relative to red blood cells, it forces them to take on this oblong shape as well. When every red blood cell is shaped this way, a bunch of them can get jammed inside a blood vessel, slowing or stopping blood flow and preventing oxygen from getting to vital organs. This lack of oxygen can trigger severe pain throughout the body and causes what’s known as a pain crisis, the most common debilitating side effect of the disease. While some people don’t experience much pain, if any, in between these episodes, others live with chronic, ongoing pain throughout their lives. Meanwhile, while a healthy body constantly replenishes its red blood cells, sickle shaped red blood cells tend to die more easily and people with sickle cell disease often aren’t able to keep up with this loss. A lack of red blood cells, known as anemia, can lead to crippling fatigue.Why is it so much more common in the African-American population?
In the United States, and around the world, the disease is more common in people of African descent. One of the main reasons for this is because people with sickle cell disease, and those with just one copy of the sickle cell trait, have a better chance at surviving malaria, which is common in Africa, than those without the trait. While the exact mechanism of this is not completely clear, researchers do know that because the microorganisms that cause malaria reside in red blood cells, the frequent destruction of sickled red blood cells forces the microorganisms out as well. Sickle cell is a textbook example of an evolutionary phenomenon called balancing selection: genes that can cause sickle cell in pairs are much more likely to persist in populations that get some benefit out of a single copy of the gene—which is only the case in regions plagued by malaria. Within those regions, the benefit of one copy of the gene keeps it from being selected out of the population; the devastating effects of two copies of the gene keep it from becoming too commonplace.Why haven’t we found a cure? Are we close?
There is currently no cure for the disease. People are often given pain medications and blood transfusions to manage the pain crises and lack of oxygen, but there’s no way to stop the body from making these poorly-shaped hemoglobin cells.
Some people have tried stem cell transplants, where doctors kill off the abnormal hemoglobin with drugs before infusing patients with blood cells from a donor’s bone marrow. Finding a suitable donor is tricky though, and these transplants are especially risky for adults.
However, future treatments may be on the horizon. Because sickle cell disease arises from a mutation in a single gene in a person’s DNA, new gene editing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9, which allows scientists to edit the human genome with relative ease, could perhaps lead to a way to cure the disease. In fact, this past year, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, published results from a study showing success in using CRISPR to edit out the disease in mice. However, while promising, we’re still a long way from the treatment reaching humans. The biggest concern is that the editing technique will alter other areas of the genome that appear similar to the ones that need to be edited out—something called off-target effects. Researchers still need to understand why these off-target effects occur, and how to prevent them, before this technique can be safely used in humans.

It’s amazing to stop and ponder it all. Digital information technology today is so intertwined with electricity, that one must wonder how energy costs could impact our world.
For IT, this is a critical debate. For one thing, large data centers can consume a megawatt of electricity per month, which can then translate to a $50 million annual budget. Urs Hoelzle of Google once noted that at 400 watts of consumption, a PC’s electricity expenses can add up to half the cost of the PC.
With expenses such as these, not only should IT be very interested in managing energy consumption in their organizations but also in understanding energy consumption at the national and global levels in order to manage the associated risks and leverage new opportunities.
The Invisible Impact of Rising Oil Prices
Globally, oil is an interesting case in point. It is in so many products ranging from plastics to tar and asphalt to lubricants and fuels such as heating oil, diesel and gasoline that fluctuations in its price has far reaching impacts.
These are but a few examples. All the while, our vendors are feeling the pressures to increase prices realizing that if a competitor can have a lower cost, then the business may well be lost. At the same time, as the costs to our organizations increase, so does the costs of the services we provide.
As the costs of oil increases, it causes demand for other energy sources to increase. As that demand increases, prices shift upwards as well. Not to mention that oil is involved to some extent in the processing and distribution of the other fuel. Oil may not be in coal, but the plastics, lubricants, paints, maintenance equipment and vehicles likely utilize oil to some extent. Again, as demand increases, prices increase.
Coal has long been a staple of low cost energy but then pollution concerns shifted production to nuclear power. The Three Mile Island incident on March 28, 1979, slammed the brakes on the building of new nuclear power plants in the U.S. Further fueling concerns over nuclear power, the April 25, 1986, accident at Chernobyl only served to make the public’s perception of nuclear power worse. These incidents served to push electricity generation back toward coal fired plants and also natural gas. With the increased natural gas prices, coal has shouldered a great deal of generation needs in both the United States and China – the world’s two largest energy consumers.
One issue is that these all are fossil fuels that are not renewable. Once we use them up, they will be gone. It may be in 50 years, maybe in 100 – there are many different estimates out there and some state that the exact extents of oil and coal reserves are unknown.
Of the fuel source listed -– oil, coal, nuclear and natural gas — nuclear power has the best potential for providing clean power into the future. To do so, the industry needs to address perception issues and show how it has evolved in the last 27+ years in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, economy, and most importantly, safety.
Now, as the prices of the traditional fuels increases, the prices become such that research and development into new fuels becomes possible. At a $1 per gallon of gasoline, the desire for substitutes just isn’t pressing. At $3-$5 per gallon, the interest grows significantly from companies, consumers and governments. The invisible hand of the market, as Adam Smith called it, will push companies to evolve their offerings to try and get ahead of their competitors and this is just what we need.
Cooler-Running Equipment Needed
At the same time, we must beware of price controls and rationing. They always appear as political machinations to try to appease the populace, but they have extremely negative impacts. All things being equal, if you fix prices and/or try to ration out distribution, the net result is that energy producers will send their products elsewhere to maximize profits. In today’s world, if the U.S. fixes prices to consumers and China, or elsewhere does not, then the energy resources will go there.
Moving forward, we must break the cycle of increases in speeds, storage and networking causing increased power consumption. As concerned information technology practitioners, we must find ways to reduce power consumption in our data centers. We need more efficient, cooler-running equipment. We can very clearly see the linkage between power consumption and heat.
The more our equipment uses, the hotter the equipment is, the hotter the data center is and thus the larger the air conditioning systems are that we install that then also consume power. Moving outside of our data centers, workstations and other devices cause the same issues in the office environment.
IT and organizations as a whole must recognize the risks associated with rising energy costs and take a proactive stance. Not only must actions be taken within the firm to manage the risks, but the risk management must extend into the web of utilities, other businesses and government.
Despite what some would call a steep asking price, Apple’s desktop powerhouse – the new Mac Pro – has been universally regarded by reviewers as the dream machine for content creators who desperately wanted a reasonably priced monster workstation that would make real-time 4K video editing a reality. And despite scarce availability – online orders slipped to February and in-store availability is not expected before March – the new Mac Pro never ceases to amaze us.
Some power users have voiced their concern that Apple would, as is often its wont, lock down the system to allow only for memory upgrades. As it turns out, the new Mac Pro is one of Apple’s most expandable Macs, if not the most expandable one.
A teardown analysis by iFixIt has revealed a socketed Intel CPU, accessible RAM and no proprietary Torx screws (go figure!), giving the workstation an eight out of ten for repairability.
Earlier in the week, Other World Computing (OWC) has confirmed that the Mac Pro’s Intel Xeon E5 processor was socketed and removable. Today, the OWC team said it’s successfully swapped the stock CPU with an eight-core Xeon E5–2667 V2 chip not offered as the Online Apple Store’s built-to-order option…
What OWC did was it replaced the machine’s stock 3.5GHz Intel E5–1650 V2 six-core chip with a 3.3GHz E5–2667 V2 eight-core variant. That processor model comes with 25MB of L3 cache and is not offered as a custom-built option by the Online Apple Store.
OWC then put the workstation through its paces using Geekbench benchmarking tool, revealing a 30 percent boost in multi-core performance over Apple’s standard eight-core CPU. OWC ran tests using 64GB of its own branded memory installed.

In other words, the 30 percent improvement courtesy of an eight-core CPU upgrade bests even the twelve-core performance of the previous-generation Mac Pro, OWC said.
So there you have it: the new Mac Pro indeed sports a socketted, removable CPU that allows for user upgrades, even if we don’t know how tinkering with the CPU would affect your warranty.
Nevertheless, this development is kinda big deal for intrepid fixers as RAM and CPU upgrades on Apple’s web store are somewhat overpriced so you’ll be doing yourself a favor and saving sizable amount by upgrading the system yourself.
Note that these high-performing Intel workstation chips don’t come cheap: the 3.3GHz eight-core Xeon E5–2667 V2 variant OWC used is a $2,000 value! By comparison, $2,000 will buy you the slower 3GHz eight-core Intel Xeon E5 with 25MB of L3 cache over at the Online Apple Store.
With that in mind, you could (and should) opt for a cheaper $2,999 stock Mac Pro configuration knowing you could safely perform DIY upgrades at a later date, if need be.
iFixit’s teardown praises the Mac Pro’s compactness and modularity – nearly everything is user-replaceable and the workstation is easy to disassemble.
SSD could potentially be expanded – with more storage options available via external Thunderbolt drives – and several components can be replaced independently, the iFixIt team discovered. I’d guess user-installable GPU upgrades would arrive later this year.
The machine’s AMD FirePro dual-GPUs are custom-made to deliver “unprecedented levels of performance”, in AMD’s own words. Specifically, the AMD FirePro D300/D500/D700 dual-GPUs have the ability to edit full-resolution 4K video and simultaneously render effects in the background, in real-time, and still have enough oomph to power up to three 4K displays.

Just don’t call it overpriced: AnandTech concluded in its monster review that the machine is indeed price-comparable to equivalent Windows workstations.
Notable exception: DIY systems that cost slightly less to build, but don’t look pretty and are not as integrated and fluid as the Mac Pro. Besides, you don’t get to run Final Cut Pro.
The new Mac Pro also uses uses 68 percent less energy than the previous-generation model, an Apple scorecard reveals, and is safe to operate horizontally.
