Imagine you run a cafeteria and would like diners there to eat more healthy food. You try an experiment: you don’t change what’s available; you just move the healthy food closer to the front of the line and put it at eye level, putting less healthy food further away. Surprisingly, this simple reorganization changes the way people act, even though their options haven’t changed at all.

Actually, cafeterias all over the world have run tests like this one with a pretty good success rate. Why? Because humans aren’t rational calculating machines, and, as Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein argue in their book “Nudge,” our decisions are heavily based on a lot of things we don’t control, like our environment and built-in cognitive biases. If that’s true, though, and we can figure out that we’re acting irrationally, can we set up our own system of nudges to help us improve?

There is a growing subset of apps that are intentionally implementing positive nudges in everything from exercising to saving money, and while they can’t do all the work for you, they can make it easier to get started.

Commitment devices: goals and incentives

Commitment devices predate the idea of nudges by quite a bit, but mobile commitment devices are fairly new. Basically, humans need specific goals, and they need a reason to complete them. Doing something as simple as pressing a button that says, “I will go for a run after work” can be enough to get you going via intrinsic motivation, but if that’s not enough for you, you can create extrinsic rewards or consequences for yourself. Some apps let you put up money, then donate it to a charity or send it to someone else if you don’t keep your commitment. Other apps make it more social, letting you share your progress with friends and family who will notice if you’re slacking off.

A few apps that give you commitment nudges include:

StickK (Android/iOS/Web): Designed by behavioral economists at Yale, it requires you to create a contract with yourself and includes both financial and social incentives to uphold it.

Fabulous (Android/iOS): An app developed by the Duke University Behavioral Economics Lab that asks you to make an ever-increasing number of commitments to help improve your overall well-being and build healthy rituals.

BeeMinder (Android/iOS/Web): It tracks your progress, sends you reminders, and it’s free … as long as you stay on track. If you don’t keep your commitment, the app will start charging you.

Forest (Android/iOS/Firefox/Chrome): A creative app that grows you a small forest the longer you stay away from your smartphone or certain time-sucking websites. Break your focus before your tree is finished growing. and it will die. Bonus: if you stick with it, you can earn in-app currency that you can spend to plant real trees somewhere on earth!

Building habits through nudges

Commitment devices are only half the story, though: they’re most often used as tools to help you build good habits. Most behavioral change apps out there today are geared towards nudging you into healthier life patterns, which they generally do by letting you set goals and rewarding you for reaching them. Some online learning platforms use “streaks,” which count each consecutive day you’ve reached your learning goals and reset to zero if you miss a day. These simple numbers can be quite effective, as they tap into both the human desire to achieve a goal and our intense aversion to losing something, even if it’s just a number on a website. Others use measures of progress and social comparison devices to encourage you to stay on track.

It’s also very important that the nudges you get are achievable: no amount of encouragement will get you to run a half marathon on your first day of working out. When humans are confronted with large, difficult tasks, they’re much more likely to give up. Effective behavioral change comes from incremental progress, ideally punctuated with feelings of achievement.

Apps centered on building good habits include:

Momentum (Android/iOS/Chrome/Firefox): This app, along with Chains (iOS), HabitBull (Android/iOS), and many others, help you build habits by giving you a “chain,” which is essentially just a counter that resets if you skip doing the thing you’re trying to do, breaking the chain.

Space (Android/iOS/Chrome): An app that tracks your smartphone screen time and sets goals for reducing it. It shows you your data and lets you share it with friends as a motivation device: if you see you were doing well in the past, and your friends are doing well now, you’re a lot more likely to continue doing well in the future.

Carrot (iOS): It’s not so much a habit-building app as it is a robot overlord that issues commands to help you behave. Good habits may develop if you are a suitable test subject.

Set it and forget it: nudges that don’t let you choose

If you ask someone their opinion about the importance of saving money, you’ll probably get a lot of positive responses. Ask them about their own saving habits, though, and the answers will likely be a lot more varied. Humans tend to heavily discount the future, meaning things that we have now are more valuable to us than things we’ll have in a few years. We’re also bad at remembering to do things, so even if we’ve decided we will save, it might take a while for us to figure out exactly how we’ll do it, and even then we might forget to send the money every month.

That’s why a lot of the best savings apps out there right now only ask you to decide once – after that, they’ll automatically save for you. If we’ve opted in to something, we’re fairly unlikely to go to all the trouble of opting out (ever forget to cancel a free trial?), and we like the idea of saving tomorrow more than we like the idea of not having money today.

Apps that implement this concept include:

Acorns (Android/iOS/Web): An app that connects to your credit card and rounds every transaction you make up to the nearest dollar. It then invests the money for you.

Digit (Android/iOS/Web): This app checks your spending habits and income, calculates how much you can save, and moves it to a separate account for you.

Qapital (iOS/Android) Similar to Digit, but you can set a lot more detailed rules for when money is deposited – you can even link it up to Twitter!

Freedom (iOS/Android/Mac/Windows/Chrome/Firefox/Opera): This is just one of a whole genre of apps/extensions that helps you block the sites and apps that are your habitual time-sucks. Do your fingers just automatically move towards Facebook when you’re a little bored? Freedom will block them for you, because you can’t be trusted.

Not a magic bullet, but a good start

Apps that implement this concept include:

Humans have problems, and they can’t all be fixed by well-timed notifications and point systems. Introducing a few positive nudges into your life only really works if you already have a goal and you’re looking for a way to make it a little easier. Your smartphone won’t go off and build a nice life for you all on its own. If you have big goals for a new year, setting up some nudges to help you achieve them will probably help you a lot. If you’re not actively trying to improve at anything, though, nudging may start to feel more like nagging.

Have you ever typed a question into Google and the ranking results were from a mass produced “how to” site? Even if you don’t know it…you have. Instructional, Q&A, and How-To sites have popped up in a variety of forms and many of them are having a great deal of success commercially and in the rankings simply by answering the specific questions people are asking.

If your business website is not seeking to do the same, then you are missing out on opportunities to get links and to offer better service. The more information you can provide a customer the more credible your business becomes. Try going to a Big Box store’s electronics department and asking the sales clerk the difference between 1080i and 1080p in an LCD TV.

Be prepared for copious stammering while they desperately seek an escape via a spill on isle 3. However, if you walk into an electronics specialty store and ask the same question you will probably get an intelligent answer which makes sense to you. Suddenly you have a lot more confidence in both your purchase and the place where you are purchasing it. The more information you can provide a customer, the more comfortable they will feel about doing business with you.

And that’s just real life, online, consumer confidence and corporate credibility are only two aspects of a much more important reason to fill your site chock full of useful information. That reason? Links of course!

I’d like to go even further with these ideas of using questions to build links. This method in particular is a very special brand of link building.  The kind that takes forever and makes you want to hurt people, ya know, the good kind.

Step 1. Find out what kinds of questions your customers are asking.

This may be easier than you think. In fact, all of the information you want it is probably accessible on your lap top without ever having be a face to face with a single human being.

To start with an obvious source, the Wordtracker Keyword Questions tool is a god send in this department. The numbers associated with these questions may be a bit misleading though. For starters, the tool only goes back 140 days, so there will be drastic seasonal variances. For instance at the moment the top question for the word “how” is “How to cook a turkey.” It’s doubtful that will be the case in July.  Trends and seasons are a good case for re-visiting this tool every few months.

If you treat the numbers as more of “popularity gauge” than a hard fast rule you’re in the right frame of mind. And numbers aside, the questions themselves can be really telling about your customers…and in some cases about the internet using world. Like the fact that the #1 question returned for the word “Where” is “Where do Jon and Kate Gosselin live”. Really people?

Aside from the keyword questions tool, there are others sites which have already done the work for you. In addition to Search Engines’ “Most Asked Questions” lists there are hundreds of sites which make a living answering peoples every day questions.  As a link builder, you can capitalize on those efforts.  Some great examples of sites that can work for this project are chúng tôi ehow, wikihow, chúng tôi howstuffworks and instructables just to name a few. You may notice that Yahoo! Answers is conspicuously missing form this list, it’s GREAT for questions, but the individual pages don’t tend to have a lot of back links. Once you chose a site or sites to work with, run this search operator:

This should give you a boat load of questions, and how-tos. With sites that offer more than just how-to’ instructions or have questions mixed into other information, try adding a ”who”, “what” “where” or “why” to the keyword to find entries which address questions. These results should represent honest questions that real people are asking which are related to your product or service. These are the topics that your consumers want to know more about, are you trying to be the authority on these topics? Well, why not?

Step 2.  – Pick the best content

Now that you’ve got some great content ideas, yeah, you could re-create an article based on every question that you find, if you can afford to create 300 articles and promote them all. Sure. But it may not be in your best interest to write a detailed article about how to cook a turkey or how to stalk Jon and Kate Gosselin.

If you have limited resources, the best way to start is by looking at popularity. If a question is extremely popular you should probably address it somewhere on your site for the sake of providing good customer service. But just because a question is popular in Keyword Questions, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s something that people are linking to. This is where looking at people’s existing linking patterns comes into play.

When you run the site command above, I highly recommend doing it with an SEO toolbar or plug in. SEO Quake is a good choice for this project because it automatically displays each page’s back links.

Using this kind of tool will save you a LOT of time.  Looking for specific instructions or an answer which already has back links you can find a pre-existing audience of potential linkers which is far better than starting from scratch. But just for your own sanity, check the quality of those back links before creating the article.

Step 3 – Do it better and promote it

Once you’ve picked a few questions to answer in content, it’s not enough to simply regurgitate what’s already on another site or to whip off a cheap two sentence answer barely worthy of an FAQ page. It’s important to bring something new to the party. What makes you more reliable than any generic instructional site or Wiki-what-now?

Extra Tips:

If you find a question that has real merit, but the answer page doesn’t have a lot of back links or even if it does, try searching that question without any operators. Find the most relevant, ranking answers and scour those back links for decent linking prospects to add to your list of contacts.

If you can answer multiple, similar questions within one article go for it; it doubles the number of people you can contact for links.

Find a method of organizing your articles and research. Keep track of the articles you are creating, the websites that are linking to an existing answer for the question or questions your article will address and the contact information for those people.

Make sure to use the exact question you are answering or instructions you are giving as the page’s title tag. This can help you be found as a respectable answer to the question in the future.

Don’t forget a call to action, as people come into your site through these new content pages; strive to keep them moving deeper into the site.

9 It Technologies That Drive Product Development

If you’re in the IT department of a manufacturing company, this is your lucky day.

A new survey by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services has documented proof that nine IT technologies are pre-requisites for organizations that want to produce more and better new products. These technologies also drive more profitable new products as well.

Essentially, organizations were twice as likely to be highly satisfied with new product development if the IT department was a true partner in the process.

While only 23% of the survey population (1,200+ respondents from around the world) said their new product development process was good, 45% of the respondents with solid IT support said that their processes were good. And good processes lead to more and better products, and more and better value from R&D, according to the respondents to the poll, which was conducted in November 2010.

It turns out that 9 technologies were viewed as proven tools that boost new product development success:

• Design and analysis tools – your typical Cad/CAM/CAE

• Supplier management

• Product requirements management—typically in a product lifecycle management (PLM) package

• Change and workflow management

• Regulatory compliance

• Product traceability

• Integrated bill of materials (BoM) and ERP

• Request for proposal preparation

The vast majority of the respondents who are already using IT to monitor new product development say these nine technologies will be extremely or very important within two years.

Note that the importance of these tools didn’t vary that much by the respondents’ size of company, geographic region or their role. The big differentiator was type of industry. Companies that manufacture high tech devices, automobiles, trucks, engines, chemicals, medical devices and other manufactured goods consider these tools even more important.

And those that weren’t already using IT to monitor new product development had a much lower opinion on the importance of these technologies. Essentially, they’re clueless about the benefits and ultimate value. This ignorance is a great opportunity for IT departments to deliver top line benefits.

Another area of IT that is considered crucial for successful new product development is the ability to enhance collaboration. While only a minority of companies have been relying on partners for new product development ideas and support in the past, the majority expect to be at least partially dependent on third parties in the future.

And given the increasing role of third parties, as well as the increasing role of other internal departments in new product development, it comes as no surprise that the use of IT to enhance collaboration was the most commonly cited change in R&D activities since the recession.

The rising dependence on third parties for R&D support has led to a tough dilemma for most large companies: the amount of external access to internal data and systems. Respondents showed a remarkable degree of schizophrenia about providing data to even their most important partners.

The study report notes that fewer than “four out of ten companies provide their most important partners with full access to their systems and data at least sometimes. What’s worse, only half provide read-only access to their most important partners at least sometimes.”

The conundrum presents a huge challenge and opportunity to IT practitioners and vendors. Developing the level of digital rights management to protect intellectual property while allowing unfettered access to authorized users is clearly a huge, and unfulfilled need. Ironically the DRM tools are out there, but they do not appear to be tightly integrated with the other systems.

Note that not only was this survey base huge, but it also represented a significant number of large companies. The average number of employees was 3,810. The average annual sales in 2009 were $1.8 billion. Note also that 36% of the respondents’ organizations had annual sales in excess of $1 billion, while 44% had less than $150 million.

Almost a third of organizations were in the manufacturing sector (30%); other industry sectors cited by respondents included professional services (17%); financial (10%); and healthcare (7%).

Around half of the respondents’ organizations were based in North America; 32% were in EMEA; 12% were based in Asia.

More than half of all respondents were in executive/senior management positions. Just over a third (36%) had other management positions. More than a quarter were in general management. Just under one fifth (19%) worked in R&D or product/operational roles. And 16% of respondents had marketing or sales roles.

Top 10 Technologies Enabling Finance Digital Transformation In 2023

Per Google Trends, there has been a sustained rise in interest in finance automation. Since the COVID outbreak, around 88% of finance and insurance executives have reported an increase in the implementation of AI technologies

One possible reason for this phenomenon is workload reduction: Gartner claims

1. RPA 

RPA are bots programmed to undertake repetitive tasks. RPA bots are being used in finance because they can reduce the workload of accounting teams, by automating numerous tasks, such as journal entries or intercompany reconciliations, and only requiring a final review from them.

Their other benefit is their consistency. For periodically-repetitive procedures, such as journal entries during financial close, these bots can be scheduled to work as commanded (i.e. recording sales data on journals as they come in), thus minimizing the possibility of missed deadlines.

2. AI

Artificial intelligence covers a variety of technologies that can be used to enhance financial tasks, such as credit extension.

For example, in the order-to-cash (O2C) process, once an item is added to the cart, retailers have to assume that the costumer has the money to pay for the good, so that they can set the logistical wheels in motion. That “assumption” is basically extending the customer a line of credit (LC) until it comes to payment processing.

Financial solutions leverage AI to evaluate applicants’ credit history more quickly, efficiently, and accurately. There are pay-as-you-go credit agencies that can do that for you. So the automated financial solution and the credit agency collaborate with each other to gather credit score on one end, and send it to your ERP on the other, thus allowing the wheels of the O2C process to be set in motion.

3. Workload automation 

Speaking of scheduled processing of tasks, another technology used in financial transformation is workload automation. Workload automation is using software to automatically schedule and initiate workflows, thus requiring minimal human intervention.

A use case of workload automation is payment collection. For this process, employees can either manually create the invoice or leverage RPA to do that. However, to keep up with invoicing deadlines, employees can leverage workload automation tools to initiate the sending process once the triggering event (e.g. invoice file creation) occurs.


An example of file transfer is Children’s hospital and medical care center. It handles 350,000+ patients a year, generating a large amount of data to be processed and delivered to hundreds of employees around the hospital. Children’s hospital and medical care center used ActiveBatch job scheduler and workload automation solution in order to consolidate multiple schedulers in one application. That allowed the hospital to automate 40+ file transfer processes to their 40+ vendors. The result was a 50+ hours of reduced workload for their staff.

4. Blockchain 

Blockchain is a distributed ledger for recording all decentralized transactions.

In finance, it can be used to improve the transparency and security of data, thus reducing the possibility of fraudulent tampering. For instance, a company’s financial documents and statements can all be secured on blockchain. This lower the feasibility of any employee or executive to make changes to the data on the sheets once they are on the chain, because they become instantly verifiable by auditors.

5. Cloud computing

Cloud computing is the practice of having data storage spaces without on-premise IT infrastructure. This technology is useful for most automation solutions as the back-end processes and functionalities do not require on-premise infrastructure. All that responsibility is passed on to the developers. Moreover, cloud functionality makes for 24/7 remote and online accessibility by all authorized personnel. This will mean that the progress of financial tasks, be it close or O2C or S2P, can all be remotely monitored independent of location.

Data privacy is another benefit that cloud computing offers financial services. Gartner claims that through 2023, public cloud infrastructure as a service suffered 60% fewer security incidents than those in traditional data centers. So, as they argue, “security should no longer be considered a primary inhibitor to the adoption of public cloud services.”

Security of financial data is of the utmost importance, and leveraging cloud solutions can offer enhanced protection of data and documents.

Document automation is a technology for creating electronic documents, such as invoice issuance for processes in accounts payable, accounting, and tax filings. The software can gather sales data such as, order quantity, price, customer information, and other usable data from underlying ERP systems such as order management software or CRM systems to automatically, and accurately, create an invoice in real-time based on the data it can create thanks to OCR technology.

7. NLP & reporting automation bots

NLP is a sub-field of AI that gives computers the ability to understand and interpret human language. NLP has many use cases in finance, but is arguably most efficient and effective for extracting large volumes of data across different silos and giving it to RPA bots that are specialized in reporting. These bots, then, will generate periodic financial reports, such as P&L statements, tax reports, and other financial statements.

The benefit of NLP being used complementary with reporting bots is that generating reports will be automated and shorter to complete. In addition, because financial reports are meant to educate high-level executives and investors on the financial state of the company, it will mean that they are provided with the most possible accurate sets of data.

8. Orchestration

Orchestration is a tool that allows for the automatic coordination of different financial ERP systems found in the infrastructure of a modern enterprise. Much like an orchestra conductor, orchestration automates the sequential undertaking of processes.

In financial close for instance, there is an eight-step process in the checklist that should be carried out before the close is achieved. Automated solutions leverage orchestration tools to allow all these different tasks in the checklist, such as balance reconciliation and intercompany accounting, to be in progress.

9. Process mining 

Process mining is an analytical tool that helps businesses understand and analyze the speed and efficiency of their everyday processes by detecting patterns in process event logs. It’s through process mining that businesses would identify the bottlenecks in their financial department that could be remedied with automation.

For example, in the purchase-to-pay process, it’s claimed that sourcing, procurement, and accounts payable have their own specific department, with each optimizing their functionality subjectively. Businesses can leverage process mining software to get a more accurate estimate of how long each purchase-to-pay cycle takes.

10. Web scraping

Lastly, automation tools are not only for back-end financial procedures. They can also be used for investment.

Let’s say a company wants to invest in a business or even a financial automation product. They can use web scrapers to scrape the internet for public reviews, prices, and capabilities of the product. Alternatively, they could scrape publicly available financial documents and other factors of interest regarding the investment project that they are interested in.
