Suggested April 2024 Dolphin Browser For Ios Allows You To Use Your Own Gestures

I fall in love with a new browser, be it for iOS or OS X, at least once a year. Sometimes I  use other browsers because they’re functional, but sometimes it’s a complete love affair. I get bored with the functioning Safari in iOS. It’s not fun, just functional. The Dolphin Browser is the first browser I’ve found in awhile that is just flat out fun. And it’s free. There aren’t many things in life that are both fun and free.

The default page for the Dolphin Browser includes a “speed dial” and “webzine.” A browser like Safari is built for browsing Google. That’s what it’s really good at. But we’re way past looking at the Internet just as a tool for gathering information. We spend our lives on a browser. Dolphin recognizes that. While the Speed Dial to the left of the default page includes favorite links, the most favorite of your favorites, it also includes a “Webzine.” It takes Facebook, Twitter, and newsy sites such as USA Today and Mac Rumors and places the most recent stories in capsules in your webzine so that you can  quickly browse the latest news of the things that interest you the most. You can edit the webzine to include only the sites you want to keep up with.

Dolphin syncs favorites as well, like many other browsers. I loaded it on my iPhone as well as my iPad so that I could keep my favorites synced throughout. I do wish it would also sync the Webzine and Speed Dial, though. Even better would be syncing the history.

The Dolphin Browser also makes full use of gestures. Instead of seeming like something that was added in as an afterthought, the browser is built around using gestures. Starting Dolphin for the first time, it shows you gestures that you can use right away, such as sliding from the left edge gives you your list of favorites, favorites that go beyond Speed Dial, and sliding from the left gives you an easy view of all your open tabs.

It seems the Dolphin Browser is made for a large aspect of the iOS. It’s meant for a touchscreen with its use of gestures and the browsing aspect of the webzine. The only thing that isn’t well-represented is pictures. This is a word browser. It features pictures just as well as Safari, but it doesn’t go out of its way to make the best of them like an iPad should. However, it’s still the go-to for me to replace Safari, that is until Safari makes adequate changes to convince me to switch back again.

Do You Still Use The Bookmarks Function Of Your Browser?

As we have gone through this evolution of browsers, technology has gone through a similar evolution. We don’t necessarily use our computers in the same way we did before. We don’t even use the Internet in the same way we did before. It’s no longer just a place to Google for information. Now we have social networks, favorite blogs, and favorite places to go for help, such as Make Tech Easier.

Do You Trust Your Browser To Manage Your Passwords?

We all know we’re supposed to change our passwords frequently, make them complicated, and use different ones for each site/service, but it can get really difficult to remember them all. Browsers can help you remember them, but do you have faith in that? We asked our writers, “Do you trust your browser to manage your passwords?”

Our Opinion

Damien answers a curt “absolutely not.” He doesn’t trust browsers. He uses a password manager app to manage his passwords.

Phil just keeps all his passwords in a book by his desk. “That way someone can’t just tap in and steal them; they have to actually come to my house to get them manually.” Plus, he figures it’s much easier to deal with them one at a time.

Ada also keeps her passwords written down on a pad. She only trusts her browsers with passwords for unimportant sites. She does note, “I do consider the book a single point of failure, meaning if it’s gone/destroyed/stolen, etc., it will be a pain to restore all the passwords.” She’s been considering making a copy of it and storing it in a separate location, but it makes it difficult since she’s always adding, changing, removing, and has it all in “super cryptic handwriting.” She jokes that she feels sorry for any thief for having to deal with it but considers it a safer option than a browser.

Alex, like Damien, also answers “no way.” He considers browser storage to be the weakest form of password storage and uses a dedicated password manager (Dashlane) to keep track of his passwords, admitting “I don’t even know the passwords to most of my accounts,” as they’re just randomly generated strings.

Fabio uses Dashlane to handle his passwords as well. “Saving your password on your browser is the worst thing you can do.”

Ryan admits he doesn’t trust his browser and doesn’t use a password manager either, even though he uses different passwords for mostly everything. He assumes it’s because he’s “a bit paranoid.” He points out that he’s read that “passwords are essentially useless since anyone determined enough can crack them,” so he thinks maybe he should be a little more trusting.

I take the same path as Ryan, but for me it’s because I am trusting. I use my browser and don’t use a password manager. The sites where I shouldn’t use the browser won’t allow me to save my password anyway, such as PayPal or my bank. That said, I also started keeping a list of my passwords, as I switch browsers frequently. Instead of paper, I keep them in an Evernote file and keep the app locked on my iPad and iPhone. That way I can always access them wherever I am. And like Ada, I make the list cryptic.

How To Use Skype For Voice And Video Chat On Your Android/Ios Device

Skype is the quintessential video and voice chatting app—and you can use it on both Android and iOS. While the Android version of Skype does support video calling, it’s not available on all devices.

Step 1: Install Skype

Skype is a free app for both Android and iOS devices. You can find the Skype iOS app in the App Store, while the Skype Android app is in the Android Market.

Supported iOS devices include: iPhone (3G, 3GS, and 4), iPod Touch (3rd and 4th generations), and iPad (1 and 2). Skype requires iOS 4.0 or later. If you have an iPod Touch 3rd generation or an iPhone 3G, you will be able to receive only video.

If you have an Android device, you may see two versions of Skype—one called “Skype for Android,” and one called “Skype Mobile for Verizon.”* If you have a Verizon Android device, you may download the Skype Mobile for Verizon app (otherwise, download the Skype for Android app). Skype Mobile for Verizon does not allow you to place domestic calls, but you can still place international calls over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Skype for Android, on the other hand, lets you place domestic and international calls over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

*For this article, I used Skype for Android, not the Verizon version. When I tested Skype for Android on a Droid X running Android 2.1, there was no video chat option.

Step 2: Set up Skype

You will then be prompted to sync your Skype contacts with your phonebook contacts. You can choose to sync all contacts, add phonebook contacts to your Skype list, or sync no contacts. If you add phonebook contacts to your Skype list, you’ll be able to easily call your phonebook contacts directly from the Skype app.

You can also access the Settings menu, where you can set up notifications, IM options, and whether Skype starts automatically when you turn on your phone.

Once you’ve signed in using your Skype login details, you will be taken directly to your contact list. Initially, you’ll have only your previously saved Skype contacts in your contact list. To see contacts from your phone, tap the “Contacts” button in the top left corner. In the main Contacts menu you can find contacts from your iPhone, but you cannot import them to your Skype contact list.

The iPhone version of Skype has four tabs: Contacts, Messages, Call, and My Info. The Messages tab lets you send instant messages to people on your Skype contact list, while the My Info tab lets you set up your profile, buy Skype credit, and set up voicemail.

Step 3: Make a Call

You can make two types of calls using Skype: Skype-to-Skype calls and Skype-to-Phone calls. The first, Skype-to-Skype calls, are free (though you may be charged if you are on a limited data plan), while the second, Skype-to-Phone calls, are billed at a low rate (for example, it’s $0.019/minute—1.9 cents per minute—for calls to the United States).

Open up your Skype contact list. If you have an Android device, go to your Contacts list, tap the icon next to where it says “All contacts,” and choose “Skype.” If you have an iOS device, open up your Contacts list, tap the button in the upper left corner that says “Contacts,” and, from the next screen, choose “Skype Contacts.”

Then choose the Skype contact you want to call, and tap “Call.” You also have the option to send them an instant message, or, if you’re on an iOS device, to start a video call.

To Make a Skype-to-Phone Call

You will be billed by Skype for all Skype-to-phone calls that you make using Skype’s mobile apps. Calls are billed per minute.

Let’s Skype!

As I noted earlier, Skype is the app everyone thinks of when they think of Internet calling. Skype is a great app for cheap data-connection or Wi-Fi calling, but it’s not ideal if you want to make free Skype-to-Skype video calls.

For one thing, Skype video calling is available only on iOS devices (and on some devices—such as the iPod Touch 3rd generation and the iPhone 3G—you will only be able to receive video) and certain Android devices. Still, Skype is easy to use, nearly everyone seems to have it, and it’s available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Symbian, and a number of connected TVs. Plus, you can make cheap phone calls to real phone numbers—excellent if you routinely have to make international calls.
