Foxconn contrite after new production exposé

Manufacturer Foxconn has again come in for criticism after an undercover reporter described dire working conditions in one Chinese facility, with the OEM promising an immediate investigation into the claims. The report by the Shanghai Evening Post (translated by M.I.C. Gadget) revealed unhygienic dormitories, poorly maintained leisure facilities, and frantic overtime as Foxconn pushed to produce sufficient iPhone 5 units to meet expected demand, with workers subjected to strict punishments for dropping the pace.

The undercover reporter was apparently put to work on the part of the Tai Yuan plant producing iPhone 5 back panels, applying masking tape and plastic stoppers to sections of the plate – such as the earphone jack – which are not to be painted. He calculates that he must mark five iPhone plates every minute in order to keep up with the production line:

“I have to pickup the back-plate and marked [sic] 4 position points using the oil-based paint pen and put it back on the running belt swiftly within 3 seconds with no errors. After such repeat action for several hours, I have terrible neckache and muscle pain on my arm. A new worker who sat opposite of me gone [sic] exhausted and laid down for a short while. The supervisor has noticed him and punished him by asking him to stand at one corner for 10 minutes like the old school days” Wang Yu, Shanghai Evening Post

Meanwhile, Foxconn’s on-site accommodations also come in for criticism, with dormitories unclean and other facilities, such as the games center and theater, said to be in a poor state of repair.

“The first night sleeping at Foxconn dormitory is a nightmare. The whole dormitory smells like garbage when I walked in. It’s a mixed of overnight garbage smell plus dirty sweat and foam smell. Outside every room was fully piled up with uncleared trash. When I opened my wardrobe, lots of cockroaches crawl out from inside and the bedsheets that are being distributed to every new workers are full of dirts and ashes” Wang Yu, Shanghai Evening Post

Unsurprisingly, Foxconn has reacted quickly to the public criticisms, promising an internal investigation and swift rectification of any problems uncovered. In a statement provided to The Next Web, it conceded that it “is not perfect” but insists that it is “making progress everyday”:

“Foxconn takes our responsibility to our employees very seriously and we work hard to give our over one million employees in China a safe and positive working environment and compensation and benefits that significantly exceed government-mandated rates and that are competitive with all of our industry peers in each location where we operate. We also work hard together with the local government and third parties to provide housing, dining, recreational and other facilities that meet the needs of our employees and we are committed to a process of continuous improvement in those and other benefits.

We do this to ensure that we continue to attract the best workers in the industry. Foxconn is not perfect, but we are making progress everyday and we continue to lead our industry in meeting the needs of the new generation of workers in China. Anything, such as the report in question, that indicates that the high standards set by our company are not being followed is immediately investigated and addressed.”

Not all of the bad press in recent months has been accurate, either. This American Life was forced to retract a controversial “exposé” of poor working conditions at Foxconn, after it was revealed that its creator had blended no small amount of fiction with the facts, making up interviews and fabricating other details.

Cisco Stops Flip Video Production

Cisco Stops Flip Video Production

RIP to Flip! This is so sad! I really liked this little video camera brand, but not it seems that Cisco has decided to close down shop and stop all production of all models. All those of you who’ve already got a camera from this line (yours truly included) will continue to receive support from the group until they’ve figured out what they’re going to do with the brand. This may well mean that they plan on selling the camera line to another group or indeed just chopping it down to the ground. But they’re so cute!

In a press release sent out to press today, Cisco has noted that they’ll be moving on five “key company priorities,” core routing, switching and services, collaboration, architectures, and yes, video. This appears to be part of a much more grand scheme and not just a ratatat on the single brand. Instead it seems that Cisco is moving toward supporting their enterprise and service provider customers in turn expand their offerings for consumers.

What does that mean for you? Not a whole lot unless you planned on purchasing a Flip camera in the near future – you’ll probably be able to pick up a cheap one now! And those of you who already have one, again, will continue to receive support as you keep on flipping. Check out the full press release below:

Cisco Restructures Consumer Business

SAN JOSE, CA–(Marketwire – April 12, 2011) –  As part of the company’s comprehensive plan to align its operations, Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) today announced that it will exit aspects of its consumer businesses and realign the remaining consumer business to support four of its five key company priorities — core routing, switching and services; collaboration; architectures; and video. As part of its plan, Cisco will:

• Close down its Flip business and support current FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan.

• Refocus Cisco’s Home Networking business for greater profitability and connection to the company’s core networking infrastructure as the network expands into a video platform in the home. These industry-leading products will continue to be available through retail channels.

• Integrate Cisco umi into the company’s Business TelePresence product line and operate through an enterprise and service provider go-to-market model, consistent with existing business TelePresence efforts.

• Assess core video technology integration of Cisco’s Eos media solutions business or other market opportunities for this business.

“We are making key, targeted moves as we align operations in support of our network-centric platform strategy,” said John Chambers, Cisco chairman and CEO. “As we move forward, our consumer efforts will focus on how we help our enterprise and service provider customers optimize and expand their offerings for consumers, and help ensure the network’s ability to deliver on those offerings.”

In connection with the changes to the consumer business, it is anticipated that Cisco will recognize restructuring charges to its GAAP financial results, with an aggregate pre-tax impact not expected to exceed $300 million during the third and fourth quarters of fiscal 2011. The charges will be disclosed in upcoming earnings conference calls and quarterly Form 10-Q filings. Additionally, the company expects this will result in a reduction of approximately 550 employees in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011.

Forward-Looking Statements

This press release may be deemed to contain forward-looking statements, which are subject to the safe harbor provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, including the company’s plan to align its operations in support of its network-centric platform strategy, Cisco’s consumer focus going forward, the maximum size of the anticipated restructuring charges, and expected employee reductions. Readers are cautioned that these forward-looking statements are only predictions and may differ materially from actual future events or results due to a variety of factors, including, among other things, how well we execute on our strategy and operating plans, business and economic conditions and growth trends in the networking industry, customer markets and various geographic regions, global economic conditions and uncertainties in the geopolitical environment and other risk factors set forth in Cisco’s most recent reports on Form 10-K and Form 10-Q. Any forward-looking statements in this release are based on limited information currently available to Cisco, which is subject to change, and Cisco will not necessarily update the information.

Tesla Axes Two Paint Options To Simplify Production

Tesla axes two paint options to simplify production

Tesla is removing two of its paint options, with CEO Elon Musk suggesting that reducing the range will “simplify manufacturing” as the electric car company tries to ramp up production. The decision will reduce the range of Tesla colors from the current seven down to just five, though those wanting the expiring finishes will be given a last chance to order them by special request.

The colors in question are Obsidian Black Metallic and Midnight Silver Metallic, Musk confirmed on Twitter today. In an email sent to prospective buyers, the automaker said that the two finishes would be removed from the online configurator on Wednesday, September 12. Buyers will, for a little over a week, still be able to select the two colors still, but be charged a $500 premium on top of the existing fee.

Moving 2 of 7 Tesla colors off menu on Wednesday to simplify manufacturing. Obsidian Black & Metallic Silver will still be available as special request, but at higher price.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 11, 2023

Responding to a concern by an existing Model X owner, Musk did assuages worries about repairs. Questioned whether the paint option change would impact future servicing, the CEO said that Tesla would be stocking all colors.

It’s an interesting decision for Tesla to make. On the one hand, anything that streamlines production ability has to be a good thing, particularly for a company like Tesla which seems to be fighting to convince investors each quarter that it can pump enough cars off the line. There’s a little overlap around the two colors in question, too.

Along with Midnight Silver Metallic, Tesla also offers a regular Silver Metallic, with a lighter finish. Meanwhile, there’s both Obsidian Black Metallic and the standard Solid Black. The latter is Tesla’s cheapest paint, included as the no-cost finish on its cars. Metallic options are $1,500 apiece, while Multi-Coat options – currently offered in white and red – are $2,000.

All the same, there’s no denying that silver and black are among the most popular finishes for cars, particularly when it comes to luxury models. According to paint specialist PPG, black is the second most popular car color in North America, shortly followed by gray and then silver. Indeed, it reports, nearly three-quarters of all cars sold are white, black, gray, or silver.

It’s not unusual, therefore, to find luxury car firms offering several different silver and grey finishes. The Audi A8, for example, comes in four different silvers. Mercedes’ S-Class has a choice of three black paints and four silver/grey options.

Tesla’s decision will affect all of its current cars: the Model S sedan, the Model X SUV, and the newest Model 3, its most affordable car. The latter has been at the center of many of the automaker’s recent struggles, as it attempts to ramp up to a consistent 6,000 cars rolling off the production line each week. Back in August, it confirmed that it had pushed Model 3 production to 5,000 cars per week, while predicting that gross margins would “grow significantly” in Q3 of this year.

Foxconn Reportedly Hid Teenage Workers From Inspectors, Daisey’s Monologue Available As Royalty

As the Fair Labor Association inspectors interview Foxconn employees about working conditions at iPad plants, early reports coming our way are a bit ambiguous and a tad confusing. First FLA president told Reuters that plant floors are spotless, then Bloomberg published an article claiming the organization found “tons of issues,” and finally those two video teasers (here and here) from ABC Nightline’s ‘iFactory’ documentary added ambiguity as the producers apparently “didn’t find any egregious violations.”

According to AI, Foxconn hid underage workers before FLA inspectors arrived for audits. Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior project officer Debby Sze Wan Chan told the publication that “All underage workers, between 16-17 years old, were not assigned any overtime work and some of them were even sent to other departments.” Foxconn is putting on a show, Chan added:

Most of the time, the workers are aware of the presence of Apple’s representatives inside the factories. It is not the problem that Apple doesn’t know the real problems at their suppliers. They know, but it is only because they do not care.

Chan attempted to deliver reports, documentaries and petition cards personally to Apple’s Cupertino, Calif.-headquarters, but she was shown the door as “a security guard tried to disperse us and he promised that he would hand the materials to someone in charge, but I haven’t heard from them since then.”

For example, another worker told Chan her employee approved three breaks a day during the inspections versus just one a day before the FLA audits. Apple’s Supplier Code of Conduct only approves of underage workers if they are legally allowed to work, and in China this means 16-year-olds. The whole Foxconn mess, as you will recall, actually erupted after big media piggy-backed on an episode of the popular radio program This American Life that adapted Mike Daisey’s highly acclaimed monologue “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs.”

Daisey’s show was the first to expose the controversial working conditions at Foxconn’s Shenzhen, China factory in a big way, creating a major public relations problem for Apple, which in years past was facing constant accusations of questionable labor practices in Chinese sweatshops. If you are eager to learn more about Daisey’s monologue that started it all, you can now download a PDF transcript of the entire episode free. Furthermore, Daisey released the transcript under an open license so that anyone and anywhere may perform it.

In related news, according to BGR, a couple of workers are claiming they were poisoned by toxins in a Suzhou, China factory while assembling iPhone touchscreens, and they wrote a letter pleading consumers to demand reform. SumOfUs released the letter in an email this afternoon as part of an Ethical iPhone Campaign petition. Former factory workers Guo Rui-qiang and Jia Jing-chuan begged consumers to sign SumOfUs’s petition. They want Apple’s manufacturing/supply partners to improve conditions at Chinese factories to prevent future injuries:

“It has been over two years since many of us were hospitalized and treated but our debilitating symptoms continue. Rui-Qiang still can’t find work because he can no longer stand for the long hours most jobs require. Jing-Chuan has to spend nearly $100 a month on health supplements. But with all of us working together to pressure Apple to change, we can make sure what happened to us doesn’t happen to others too.”

If Windows 10 won’t activate after a reinstall of the operating system, it depends on how it was originally installed on your device.

If you activated a free upgrade or bought from Microsoft Store and activated it, you have a digital license, which means you can reinstall without a product key as Windows automatically activates it online after the process is complete. Before trying to reinstall, ensure you check that it is activated on your device.

However, there are concerns by users that Windows 10 won’t active after reinstall of the operating system. If you share the same concern, then try the solutions below to resolve it.

Windows 10 activation: Things to note

Windows activation is a way of verifying that the copy of Windows 10 you are using is genuine and used on your device, and not many others as per the Microsoft Software License Terms.

However you got your copy, the activation can either be done via a digital license or a product key, without which activation is impossible and you cannot substitute the two.

A digital license, also known as a digital entitlement is given instead of a product key and if you have it, you need not enter a product key.

Expert tip:

Before you resolve the Windows 10 won’t activate after reinstall problem, it is important to note the following:

How do I fix Windows 10 activation issues after reinstall? 1. Preliminary fixes 2. Reset your license status

Type the command: slmgr.vbs -rearm

Press enter and exit the command prompt

Restart your computer

Enter the product key using the instructions

3. Force activation

Type the command: slmgr.vbs -ato

Press enter and exit the command prompt

Restart your computer

4. Replace the product key

This may resolve any problems preventing Windows 10 product activation. To do this:

Type the command: slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx (to replace the current product key with the specified) xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx – represents your product key

Press enter and exit the command prompt

Restart your computer

Try Activating again

5. Check your Windows PID

If Windows 10 won’t active after reinstall, you may have been running a copy of Windows that isn’t genuine. This could have been bought from an auction website like eBay or Amazon, or a counterfeit copy. You can check the Product ID (PID) to determine the level of support. To do this:

NOTE

6. Check your hardware

If Windows 10 won’t activate after reinstall, and previously it activated, you could have changed some hardware, like your motherboard or processor, which to Windows seems like a totally different PC.

Pen Tool In After Effects

Introduction to Pen Tool

Pen tool usually we see in photoshop which helps us to create a path and select the characters. The pen tool is one of the great performance tools in after effects also; with the pen tool, we can draw a shape easily and create different masks; masks are used to merge the multilayers in after effects. With the help of the pen tool, we can draw shapes and create the path to animate; we can do animations, text animation, and shape animation with pen tool Now, let’s see some of the animations with the help of the pen tool.

Using Pen Tool in After Effects

First, we see how to draw a line with the pen tool and animate a line.

Start Your Free Design Course

3D animation, modelling, simulation, game development & others

Step 1: Create a New Composition.

Step 2: Create a Shape layer where we can draw the shape of the line and animate it.

Step 4: Select the Stock of color which you like; always select an attractive color because it gives beauty to the animation.

Step 5: Now here we go with the drawing, draw a shape of your wish with the help of a pen tool, draw a line like a curve’s no issues even you don’t get the correct shape because we have another option to correct the shape we can see that in the next step.

Every time we will not get a good drawing, however, we use the pen tool; while using the pen tool, in some places, we cant manage the curves and shapes; in such cases, we have an option to correct the shape and curves; let us see how

Step 6: Go to the shape layer, content, shape. Select the path as shown in the below image. Once we select the path, we can find the points in our drawing.

Step 7: Now, select the selection tool to adjust the points in the drawing; by adjusting that points, we can bring the shapes according to us to get good shapes.

Step 8: We can see the anchor points in the drawing now; we can select every point and adjust the drawing.

Step 9: By adjusting the points, we can get our shapes.

Step 10: In this step, I am going to explain very important and useful option Trim paths; let me tell something about the trim path; some of the users who use aftereffects rarely may don’t know about this because it hides under the shape submenu, this tool allows you to adjust the layer paths. We can do multi animations with this trim path like Map route, infographic, text stroke, text box, circle bursts.

Step 11: In this Trim path, there are two main options start and end.

Step 12: Now, change the values of start and end.

Step 13: Here, we change the values of start and end.

Step 15: At the starting point, increase the value of End to 20 now; we can find a small line.

Step 16: When we move from start to end position, we can see the animation of the line moving from starting to end like a snake.

Step 17: Here, we have the vector mode to edit the values to make our animation smoother.

In this process, we saw how a shape is animated with the help of a pen tool, here we draw a line with a pen tool; with the help of a path, we create a shape, and we use trim paths to animate that line by changing starting and ending points. Not the only shape we can animate a particle with the help of a pen tool.

Particle Animation with Pen Tool

Following are the steps of creating animation with the pen tool.

Step 1: Import any of the objects which you willing to animate; here, I am importing a ball.

Step 2: We can animate the object with keyframe animation by changing the start and end position; it’s a basic normal process anyone can do.

But if you need to do something different or creative animation, just go through the pen tool.

Step 3: Select the shape layer where we are going to draw a path for our animation.

Step 4: Select the pen tool to draw the shape.

Step 5: Now draw a shape according to our animation requirement, we have imported a ball object, so I draw a shape of up and down because I feel that the ball need to fall from up to down and jump step by step so I started the first point at the top and draw an up and down shape and ends at a corner where the ball needs to stop.

Here you can see how the shape is; in this shape, the ball is going to travel, you can find the first point out of the screen where the ball travels from out of the screen.

Step 6: For every object, there will be a centre point; in this process, we need to change the centre point to the bottom because we have an object ball; if the ball has a center point in the middle while touching the ground, its center point will meet the ground where it won’t look professional, so I changed the center point if we have any other object we can change the center point according to the requirement.

Step 7: Go to the Shape Layer, Contents, shape – Path 1 – Path. Select the path and copy, make sure both the path is selected while copying.

Now the ball is hidden because while applying the path copy to position to the ball, it moves in that path.

Step 9: By adjusting the key points in the timeline, we can manage the animation like fast starting and slow at the end.

Conclusion

In this process, we animate a ball using the pen tool; we draw a shape and create a path and copied the path from the shape layer and pasted in the object position by that the object follows the shape positions. By using this as a sample, we create many other animations. Like ways, we can animate any object by using the pen tool.
