Suggested April 2024 Google: 404 Errors Are Fine As Long As They Have No Links Or Traffic

In the latest episodes of Google’s SEO Snippets video series, John Mueller answers a webmaster’s question regarding 404 errors.

Specifically, the site owner was wondering if 404 errors are a cause for concern when they exist within old versions of a site.

“What should I do with 404s in Search Console that are from ancient versions of my site?”

Mueller briefly explains why 404 errors occur in the first place, and suggests the common SEO best practice of setting up redirects to relevant pages. However, even with redirects in place, 404 errors may still pop up in Search Console.

Site owners may decide to drop redirects because of the overhead costs involved with maintaining them, or they might just forget about the directs being in place. Whatever the case may be, there are now 404s showing up for old sections of a site.

Is this a problem? Well, it depends on how old these parts of the site are. If they’re so old that they’re no longer being linked to internally, and not receiving any traffic, then that’s “perfectly fine.”

If the URLs returning 404 errors are being linked to from other pages of the site, and/or receiving traffic, then they should be dealt with by setting up redirects.

That solution may be easy enough for a handful of URLs, but what if there are many 404 errors showing up? Mueller suggests relying on Search Console’s assessment of the crawl errors.

Google Search Console will sort crawl errors in order of priority. If Search Console determines that all top crawl errors are irrelevant, then it is not necessary to set up redirects.

For Mueller’s full response, see the video and transcription below.

“In your server logs, or analytics, check for traffic to those URLs. If there’s no traffic, that’s great. In Search Console check for links to those URLs. Are there no relevant links? That’s great too. If you see nothing special in either the links, or the traffic, having those pages return 404 is perfectly fine.

If you do see traffic to those URLs, or see links pointing at those URLs, check where they’re coming from and have those links point at the new URLs instead. Or, if it looks like a lot of traffic or links are going to those URLs, perhaps putting a redirect back in place would be more efficient.

That works for a few crawl errors, but what if you have a ton of 404 errors? Search Console makes this easy; it prioritizes crawl errors for you. If the top errors in the report are all irrelevant you can rest assure there is nothing more important further down on the list. Crawl errors for 404s that you don’t want to have indexed don’t negatively effect the rest of your site in search. So take your time to find a good approach that works for you.”

Google To Surface Election Day 2024 Results As Soon As Polls Close

Google wants to be your source for up-to-the-minute coverage of election results for the 2024 US Presidential election.

Immediately as polls close, Google will begin surfacing a real-time count of election results built right into the first page of search.

Simply search for “election results” when the polls close on November 8th, and Google will have a live count which will be updated every 30 seconds.

Google has created an animated GIF as an example of what you will see when searching for election results after polls close on election day.

As well as results for the Presidential race, Google will also display Senatorial, Congressional, Gubernatorial races as well as state-level referenda and ballot propositions.

Despite it being a race for the President of the United States, it’s safe to say the whole world is waiting for the results of this election. Google will be making its election day results features available worldwide in 30 languages.

Google explains how launched a number of initiatives this year aimed at helping to educate voters on such things as how to register to vote, and who’s on their ballot.

This year, the company says there has been a “startling” increase in the number of people searching for how to vote:

“Our search results have helped voters register and explained the voting process with information on how to vote, who’s on their ballot, and how to find their local polling place in both English and Spanish. Since releasing these in-depth search results, we’ve seen millions of people engage with these tools on Google — there’s even been a startling 233% increase in traffic for “how to vote” compared with 2012. In addition to “how to vote,” Americans are actively searching for “where to vote”.

Google reminds that starting 7pm EST on November 8, YouTube will be streaming election results from more news outlets than ever before. Including live coverage from NBC, PBS, MTV, Bloomberg, Telemundo and The Young Turks.

WordPress 5.5 Sitemap Bug Causes 404 Errors

A WordPress 5.5 sitemap bug was reported that affects some sites with native WordPress sitemaps. The bug creates non-existent XML sitemap pages. The issue has been officially confirmed.

Sitemap Pagination Bug

The WordPress bug affects websites sitemaps that are generated by the WordPress core. The bug affects websites that have so many pages that they need more than one XML site map.

According to the bug report, the sitemaps can look like this example:

wp-sitemap-posts-post-3.xml”

The bug report notes the following unexpected behavior:

wp-sitemap-posts-post-3.xml/page/3”

The person reporting the bug also added:

“The first URL works correctly, but the last two are 404s.

This happens with no plugins activated and using the twentytwenty theme.

My setup does have “Day and name” permalinks enabled. I’m using PHP 7.3.19 and Nginx 1.19.0 in a local development environment.”

Why Did the WordPress Sitemap Bug Happen?

It’s during this process that unanticipated bugs are discovered, noted, and assigned a severity level and a date for a patch to fix the issue.

Software bugs can happen when an unanticipated event, like a specific form of permalink structure, happens which then triggers the unexpected behavior.

The WordPress development team documented this patch that introduces a new WordPress function:

“Introduces the get_sitemap_url() function which is sort of equivalent to get_permalink() but for sitemaps. That new function is used in redirect_canonical().”

The official summary of the fix says:

Introduce the function get_sitemap_url() to simplify getting the index and provider URLs as needed.”

A WordPress function is a piece of code that creates a specific functionality. There are functions that are specific to themes, plugins and to the WordPress core.

The WordPress sitemap is a new addition to the WordPress core. So it was almost inevitable for something to have not been anticipated.

When Will WP Sitemap Pagination Bug Be Fixed?

The fix has been completed.

The patch is scheduled to be released in the WordPress 5.5.1 release candidate 1, scheduled for August 27th.

The final WordPress 5.5.1 maintenance update is scheduled for Tuesday September 1, 2023.

Like TikTok, the function will come with a host of customization options in the way of stickers, filters, music, and more. The introduction of Reels also resulted in a makeover of the social media app. Instagram has introduced a separate ‘Reels’ tab in your profile to display all your content.

Despite the drag and pull in the market, BTC remains on the top of the market, having the largest Market Cap. The size of the Market Cap of every crypto is a powerful indication of the strength of the cryptocurrency. In general, a cryptocurrency is thought to be more prominent in the market the larger its market cap.

However, Market Cap isn’t always the greatest for investors. When compared to larger coins, smaller market cap coins may have a lot more space for growth. New coins with a small Market Cap, but with great potential gradually and eventually spring to the top. Moshnake (MSH) is one of such coins with great potential that might take the world by storm. Moshnake seeks to become the number one go-to for NFT games.

Sometimes, you set a target and aim to meet up. That’s how Interesting the game is. Getting such a game seems to be hard, as the Nokia old phone is out of date. However, Moshnake is here to bring back that feeling.

Avalanche (AVAX), the Solution to Ethereum’s Setback

Avalanche (AVAX) is a decentralized application platform that aims to increase scalability without sacrificing decentralization or speed. Avalanche’s main platform is made up of three blockchains.

The X-chain takes care of the creation and trading of assets. The X-chain is majorly for Smart Contract while the P-chain validates and coordinates the subnet.

Avalanche blockchain, unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, does not use consensus mechanisms like Proof-of-stake, Proof-of-work, or Proof-of-history, rather uses directed acyclic graph (DAG) protocol to process transactions in parallel.

Can Bitcoin (BTC) Become a Generally Accepted Currency?

The acceptance of BTC as a means of the exchange spread gradually across different industries. Oxford City Football club openly revealed their acceptance to collect BTC for payment of match tickets, purchase of drinks and food, and others.

Bitcoin started its journey in 2009 after much check and scrutiny to ascertain its relevance in the finance world. Today, the emergence of Bitcoin has and is gradually affecting every sector.

With cryptocurrencies, charity organizations are supported to raise funds for less privileged people, poor widows, undeveloped countries, and others.

Aside from eliminating the control of central operating organizations in the banking system, Bitcoin (BTC) has also brought about easy transactions and financial control.

How To Use A Laptop As A Second Or External Monitor

Looking to hook up another screen to your computer? You don’t have to spend money on a dedicated external monitor if you have a spare laptop. Just use Miracast or AirPlay to set it up as your second monitor.

Using a second or external monitor is the best way to increase viewing space and productivity. This can be handy in situations such as when working from home and needing additional screen real estate for documents and applications.

Table of Contents

If you use a Windows or macOS device and there’s a laptop around, you can use Miracast or AirPlay to use it as a second or external display. The best thing about the whole setup is that it’s quick, easy, and involves zero adapters, ports, or cables.

Windows: Use a Laptop as a Second or External Monitor With Miracast

Almost all modern Microsoft Windows desktop computers and laptops come with built-in Miracast functionality. It’s a wireless display standard that can send video signals from one device to another, and you can use it to extend or duplicate a laptop display over Wi-Fi easily.

However, there is a couple of requirements to use Miracast:

Both Windows devices need to be on the same wireless network.

Both Windows devices must run the latest versions of the Windows 10 or 11 operating system, including up-to-date graphics card drivers.

If that’s not an issue, work through the instructions below to use a desktop PC or laptop in a dual-monitor setup with another laptop via Miracast.

Set Up Laptop to Work as a Second or External Monitor

You must begin by setting up the Windows laptop you want to work as a second display. To do that:

Open the drop-down menu next to

Some

.

Work through the rest of the options on the screen and tweak them the way you want:

Ask to project to this PC

: Choose how your laptop prompts for permission when a connection attempt is requested—

First time

only

or

Every time a connection is requested

.

Require PIN for pairing

: Choose how your laptop prompts you to enter its PIN when you attempt to use it as a second screen—

Never

,

First time

, or

Always

.

This PC can be discovered for projection only when it’s plugged into a power source:

Determine if you want to save battery life by only being able to project to your laptop’s screen when it’s charging.

Rename your PC

: You need to know your laptop’s name to connect to it, so note it down. Select this option to change your laptop’s name if you have difficulty recognizing it from other Windows devices.

Launch

Wireless Display

(Windows 10) or

Connect

(Windows 11) via the Start menu and keep the app open.

Cast Display to Your Laptop Screen

You can now project the display from your main PC to the laptop device. To do that:

.

If you want to use your laptop as a separate device but with the same keyboard and mouse, you must rely on a hardware or software KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) solution. To learn more, check our guide to using multiple computer devices with a single keyboard and mouse.

Mac: Use a Laptop as a Second or External Monitor With AirPlay

If you use a Mac, you can use Apple’s proprietary AirPlay protocol to use another MacBook or a Sidecar-compatible iPad as a secondary monitor. For that to work, both devices must:

Have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth active.

Be signed in with the same Apple ID.

Have the latest system software updates installed.

If that’s not an issue:

Open the Control Center on the Mac you want to project the screen from and select

Screen Mirroring

.

Pick the MacBook or iPad you want to use as a second screen and pick between mirroring and extending the display.

If you want to manage how both displays work (e.g., switch around the alignment), open the System Preferences/Settings app and select Displays.

Alternatively, if you want to control both devices with a single keyboard or mouse, learn how to use Universal Control on Mac and iPad.

Get More Screen Real Estate the Easy Way

As you just learned, Miracast and AirPlay offer a quick and easy solution for anyone with an extra laptop wanting more screen real estate alongside their regular PC. Being able to set up everything wirelessly only makes it all the more practical and convenient.
