Our digital world floats on a sea of energy. Data centers and workstations are powered by electricity and countless trillions of bits traversing the globe are done so by electrons. Even optical networks and processors are made possible by electricity powering the transmission infrastructure.

It’s amazing to stop and ponder it all. Digital information technology today is so intertwined with electricity, that one must wonder how energy costs could impact our world.

For IT, this is a critical debate. For one thing, large data centers can consume a megawatt of electricity per month, which can then translate to a $50 million annual budget. Urs Hoelzle of Google once noted that at 400 watts of consumption, a PC’s electricity expenses can add up to half the cost of the PC.

With expenses such as these, not only should IT be very interested in managing energy consumption in their organizations but also in understanding energy consumption at the national and global levels in order to manage the associated risks and leverage new opportunities.

The Invisible Impact of Rising Oil Prices

Globally, oil is an interesting case in point. It is in so many products ranging from plastics to tar and asphalt to lubricants and fuels such as heating oil, diesel and gasoline that fluctuations in its price has far reaching impacts.

These are but a few examples. All the while, our vendors are feeling the pressures to increase prices realizing that if a competitor can have a lower cost, then the business may well be lost. At the same time, as the costs to our organizations increase, so does the costs of the services we provide.

As the costs of oil increases, it causes demand for other energy sources to increase. As that demand increases, prices shift upwards as well. Not to mention that oil is involved to some extent in the processing and distribution of the other fuel. Oil may not be in coal, but the plastics, lubricants, paints, maintenance equipment and vehicles likely utilize oil to some extent. Again, as demand increases, prices increase.

Coal has long been a staple of low cost energy but then pollution concerns shifted production to nuclear power. The Three Mile Island incident on March 28, 1979, slammed the brakes on the building of new nuclear power plants in the U.S. Further fueling concerns over nuclear power, the April 25, 1986, accident at Chernobyl only served to make the public’s perception of nuclear power worse. These incidents served to push electricity generation back toward coal fired plants and also natural gas. With the increased natural gas prices, coal has shouldered a great deal of generation needs in both the United States and China – the world’s two largest energy consumers.

One issue is that these all are fossil fuels that are not renewable. Once we use them up, they will be gone. It may be in 50 years, maybe in 100 – there are many different estimates out there and some state that the exact extents of oil and coal reserves are unknown.

Of the fuel source listed -– oil, coal, nuclear and natural gas — nuclear power has the best potential for providing clean power into the future. To do so, the industry needs to address perception issues and show how it has evolved in the last 27+ years in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, economy, and most importantly, safety.

Now, as the prices of the traditional fuels increases, the prices become such that research and development into new fuels becomes possible. At a $1 per gallon of gasoline, the desire for substitutes just isn’t pressing. At $3-$5 per gallon, the interest grows significantly from companies, consumers and governments. The invisible hand of the market, as Adam Smith called it, will push companies to evolve their offerings to try and get ahead of their competitors and this is just what we need.

Cooler-Running Equipment Needed

At the same time, we must beware of price controls and rationing. They always appear as political machinations to try to appease the populace, but they have extremely negative impacts. All things being equal, if you fix prices and/or try to ration out distribution, the net result is that energy producers will send their products elsewhere to maximize profits. In today’s world, if the U.S. fixes prices to consumers and China, or elsewhere does not, then the energy resources will go there.

Moving forward, we must break the cycle of increases in speeds, storage and networking causing increased power consumption. As concerned information technology practitioners, we must find ways to reduce power consumption in our data centers. We need more efficient, cooler-running equipment. We can very clearly see the linkage between power consumption and heat.

The more our equipment uses, the hotter the equipment is, the hotter the data center is and thus the larger the air conditioning systems are that we install that then also consume power. Moving outside of our data centers, workstations and other devices cause the same issues in the office environment.

IT and organizations as a whole must recognize the risks associated with rising energy costs and take a proactive stance. Not only must actions be taken within the firm to manage the risks, but the risk management must extend into the web of utilities, other businesses and government.

How Does Menstruation Affect My Muscle Performance?

Halfway through training for my first marathon, I lost my period.

I wasn’t that surprised. It had happened before, once at the beginning of college and again in my early 20s. Each came at a time when I increased my athletic endeavors, but what surprised me most were the seesawing opinions of the medical professionals I told: One was extremely concerned, another not at all, and the third gave me the answer that inspired this article: “I don’t think we really know what the effects are yet.” How can that be?

Today, more women than ever participate in sports. As Mother Jones points out, in 1972, just 1 in 27 high school girls participate in sports. As of 2012, 2 in 5 girls did. Yet we know little about the effects that natural hormonal fluctuations have on muscle performance or what happens to those cycles—and our health—when we work out.

This lack of research effort is surprising given that period pain in relation to performance is a frequent discussion topic among female athletes. But it’s one discussed among friends, in private discussions and group chats. That lack of information makes it difficult for anyone with a period to understand how it affects their body every month. More research is slowly emerging, but it’s been a long road.

Some of the earliest rigorous studies done on muscle performance took place in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, and they generally excluded women, assuming that men were easier to analyze precisely because researchers (incorrectly) assumed they didn’t have significant hormonal cycles. It was also assumed, somewhat contradictorily, that they could easily serve as a proxy for women. That meant up until the last few decades, little to no research existed on how a woman’s monthly hormonal cycle affected her muscular or overall athletic performance. Studies on the topic are still scarce, but researchers have begun to draw some conclusions based on the early results.

In an idealized 28-day menstrual cycle, the first few days, when menstruation, or bleeding, happens, there’s low levels of both estrogen and progesterone production. After menstruation ends, the follicular phase begins which features an increase in estrogen production. At day 14, ovulation occurs, and estrogen production wanes while production of the hormone progesterone increases. If conception doesn’t occur, progesterone levels fall, menstruation starts, and everything repeats.

What effect these hormonal fluctuations have on muscle performance is far from clear. “I think a subset of women will say that they don’t feel as well right before they get their menses, and that certainly can affect athletic performance,” says Andrea Dunaif, an endocrinologist at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. But there isn’t actually much data on what the hormones themselves do to muscles.

Though information is scarce, no studies have found any major changes in metabolism or exercise capacity during the menstrual cycle (at least in these extremely controlled lab settings), but there could be some subtle differences. In particular, says Georgie Bruinvels, a research scientist with a PhD in sports and exercise science at Orecco (and an elite distance runner herself), we know that there are receptors for estrogen and progesterone in various parts of the body, including the muscles. For example, the anterior cruciate ligament, also known as the ACL, has a number of estrogen receptors that can influence our biomechanics depending on how much estrogen is circulating. During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, as estrogen levels are increasing, some studies have found an increased risk of ACL damage, however, as one review points out, the strength of the evidence is low.

Researchers know that neuromuscular performance does shift at various points throughout the menstrual cycle, as do metabolic states. In the first half of the menstrual cycle, the follicular phase, you are in a more anabolic state, meaning that your body is more engaged with building and growing. For this reason, says Bruinvels, it might be more beneficial to do strength training then because your body will benefit more from it. In the second half of the menstrual cycle there’s a switch to a more catabolic state, meaning you are better able to utilize fat as an energy source. So, potentially, it could be better to focus on endurance training, in which you could utilize these fat stores, during this phase.

A more recent study used an MRI to image muscles at various points during the menstrual cycle and found that there was more fluid in the muscles during the second half, when progesterone levels are highest. This makes sense, says Dunaif, since progesterone causes fluid retention. That bloating, along with mood changes that progesterone brings on, might also affect you in a less physiological way. “A subset of women get a premenstrual syndrome during their cycles from the effects of progesterone, including symptoms of weight gain and breast tenderness as well as irritability and mood changes,” she explains, “and that could theoretically affect athletic performance from more of a motivational standpoint.”

So how big of a difference does this all make? As Bruinvels and Dunaif point out, studies generally show that menstrual cycles don’t dramatically affect athletic performance; your muscles will perform more or less the same all month. But your muscular system might be better adapted to certain types of training at different points during your cycle.

On the flip side, intense athletic performance can also affect and disrupt the hormone cycle, particularly in endurance sports like distance running, as well as gymnastics and figure skating. The absence of a period, known medically as amenorrhea, has more scientific research behind it, though the exact mechanisms that give rise to it still aren’t entirely clear.

The key mechanism is stress, which acts on the pathway that drives progesterone and estrogen production—specifically via the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), which gets secreted by the hypothalamus in the brain. An uptick in this hormone triggers the secretion of two other hormones, follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which in turn regulate the release of progesterone and estrogen. But stress—any stress—can suppress the release of GnRH, thereby suppressing the amount of estrogen released and stalling a period, sometimes indefinitely.

Any physical stress, whether it’s from excessive exercise, psychological burdens, insufficient calorie intake, or even just travel, can mess with this pathway. In the specific case of excessive exercise, Dunaif says, endogenous opiates (also known as endorphins, which give rise to a “runner’s high”) might be involved, though more research is sorely needed to know for sure. An increase in endorphins, which happens when you exercise frequently, might directly suppress the hormones involved in this pathway. In fact, she says, some studies have found that if you give athletes with amenorrhea an opiate antagonist like naltrexone, a subset of them will see a return of their menstrual cycles. But not all of them will. Often a loss of menstruation is multifactorial, so all of those stressors may need to be addressed to gain back a period.

How strongly each of the stress factors come into play is still not completely understood. While much of the blame in recent years has been placed solely on an athlete’s weight, both Bruinvel and Dunaif both agree that the issue is almost always multifactorial and highly individualized. The degree and types of stress that people’s bodies can handle varies a lot. “Endurance athletes often have a perfectionist nature,” says Bruinvels. “And that means that they can be highly stressed individuals, which often predispose them to this even more.”

Just as unclear are the health consequences, both in the short and long term. Research shows that estrogen is beneficial to women’s health. Not only does it allow for a normal menstrual cycle, but it also plays key roles in bone, liver, and skin health as well as promoting proper heart, metabolism, and cognitive functioning.

Studies on the shorter term effects show that amenorrheic athletes tend to have an increased risk of developing stress fractures, which are tiny cracks in a bone caused by repeated stress. The science is a little murkier for long term outcomes, but that’s mostly because there haven’t been any studies on how prolonged amenorrhea affects bone health over decades, says Bruinvels. While there have been many case studies of athletes who have experienced years, or even decades, of frequent amenorrhea who gained their menstruation back and became pregnant, we still don’t know what their bone health will be like when they’re in their 60s, 70s, and 80s.

At Orecco, Bruinvels helped lead the development of an app called Fitrwoman, which allows people who menstruate to track both their cycles and their training in one place. In doing research during the app’s development, Bruinvels found that about half the women she surveyed stopped exercising because of their periods. With a better understanding and more available science-backed resources, like her app, she is hoping to bring that percentage down. “One of the key things is actually breaking the barriers and breaking the taboos so people can talk about it and address it.”

For now, athletes concerned about losing their periods should talk to their doctors. A physician can help you pinpoint the mechanisms at play, and suggest changes to ensure you’re performing at your best.

What Is Screen Burn In And How Can You Prevent It?

The word “burn in” is a little misleading, as no actual burning or heat problems are involved. Instead, this term describes a display suffering from permanent discoloration across any part of the panel. This may take the form of a text or image outline, fading of colors, or other noticeable patches and patterns on display. The display still works as expected, but a somewhat noticeable ghost image or discoloration persists when the screen is on. To be considered screen burn in, these artifacts have to be permanent and are a defect caused on the display hardware side. Rather than a graphical glitch that may be caused by software, temporary image retention, or a problem with the display driver circuitry.

The term dates back to old CRT monitors, where phosphor compounds that emit light to produce images lost their luminance with time. LCD panels can exhibit similar problems, but these are much rarer due to the nature of LCD’s backlight and color matrix design.

OLED displays are made up of red, green, and blue LEDs, but the different colors have different lifespans.

Speaking more technically, the issue is that blue LEDs have significantly lower luminous efficiency than red or green pixels. This means that a blue LED needs to be driven at a higher current for a set sized pixel to achieve the same brightness as red or green. Higher current causes the pixel to degrade faster, shortening its lifespan and eventually tinting the display towards the red and green colors. Therefore an OLED display’s color doesn’t degrade evenly; it will ultimately lean towards a red/green tint.

So, if one part of the panel spends a lot of time displaying a blue or white image, the blue pixels in this area will degrade faster than in other areas. That’s essentially what burn in is. However, display manufacturers do account for this in their panel designs.

Why do we use OLED screens if they have a burn in problem?

If OLED screens have a problem with burn in, why do we continue using them? Burn in is a true downside to OLED displays, but there are plenty of reasons consumers and manufacturers like them. For starters, image quality is much better than in LCDs. OLED panels can reproduce more vibrant colors, more contrast, wider viewing angles, and faster refresh rates. Colors tend to be much more saturated, and blacks are much darker.

OLED displays have a simpler design, allowing thinner, lighter smartphone designs. You can also thank OLED technology for foldable phones and curved displays. If those improvements weren’t enough, you’ll also enjoy lower power consumption with OLED.

Additionally, burn in problems are only common after prolonged periods of use. As you may already know, smartphone manufacturers don’t expect you to keep a smartphone for more than 2-3 years. Recent statistics show that consumers currently keep their phones for an average of 2.65 years.

Can you avoid it?

At this stage, manufacturers are very aware of the potential issues and have already taken some intelligent steps to help avoid burn in. For starters, Samsung has been using its pentile subpixel arrangement in its AMOLED displays since the Galaxy S3. By making the blue subpixel larger, it requires less current to drive in order to provide the necessary light. Driving the LED with less current increases its lifespan, so it takes longer for any noticeable color shift to occur.

This doesn’t directly address the issue of different parts of the screen aging at different rates, but it does mean that it will take significantly longer to notice than with older or cheaper OLED panels. More expensive and modern OLED panels are built with longer-lasting LEDs and well-designed layouts, meaning flagship smartphone displays age slower. These days, it’s cheaper phones packing cheaper displays that are marginally more likely to see issues after heavy use.

Display technology has improved, and most consumers can use their phones for years without any sign of burn in.

There are software solutions too. Android Wear product manufacturers can enable the OS’s “burn protection” option. This mode periodically shifts the screen’s contents by a few pixels, so they spend equal time displaying different colors. Smartphones equipped with Always-On display technology employ a similar tactic. Google also suggests a selection of design guidelines tailored to avoid screen burn-in problems when designing OLED watches. The move towards gesture rather than on-screen navigation controls is also helping to alleviate one of the more noticeable burn in areas.

But what can I do? Is there a fix?

If your screen is already burnt in, there’s not much that can be done to undo the damage. Some apps on the Play Store claim to reverse the problem. These will end up “burning” the rest of the screen to match the colors, which isn’t a real solution.

There are several preventative measures to prolong the display’s lifetime:

Keep your display brightness as low as reasonable. Increased brightness requires more current and therefore shortens LED lifespans. Don’t crank up the brightness unless you have to.

Shorten your screen-off timer. Turning the screen off when you’re not using it will prevent displaying static images.

Use Dark Mode, if supported. Using a darker interface reduces the amount of illumination and helps LEDs last longer.

Use Immersive Mode, where available. This hides the notification bar and its static icons. Alternatively, pick a launcher that offers a similar feature, as well as a transparent navigation bar and app drawer options.

Pick a wallpaper with darker colors and change it now and again.

Use keyboards that offer darker themes to prevent color degradation in the lower half of the display.

Do you use a navigation app regularly for long journeys? Pick one that doesn’t have a lot of bright static UI elements.

Switch to gesture navigation and drop the buttons, if your phone supports it. This helps to prevent burn in at the bottom of the screen.

Try to make it so that the screen isn’t displaying the same thing all the time, in the same areas of the screen. For example, if you have a widget that almost always looks the same, chances are it will eventually burn into the image. Move things around now and then, and try to keep the view of your phone dynamic.

Display burn in refers to the discoloration of lighting and colors across any part of a screen panel. As screens age, pixels can begin loosing brightness. When worn out pixels emit too much light for long periods, this can cause certain sections of the screen to look dimmer, or less colorful.

Screen burn in is inevitable. If you’re using a screen, it will eventually lose its brightness. That said, there are some things you can do to elongate a display’s lifespan. These include lowering the brightness, reducing the time a screen takes to go to sleep, avoiding always-on displays, and more.

Display burn in is permanent damage, so there is no way to fix it other than replacing the panel.

OLED technology is known for burning in more easily. QLED technology hasn’t made it to smartphones, but it is said to be much better at handling this issue. In fact, Samsung covers screen burn in warranty claims for up to 10 years on QLED panels.

Iphone 3D Touch, What It Can Do And What It Can’t

To touch upon the sudden name change from ‘Force Touch'(on the Apple watch and Macbooks) to ‘3D Touch’, the speculation behind this shift points to a couple of reasons- ‘3D Touch’ has a better, non-intrusive feel to the name compared to ‘Force Touch’, making it a marketing boon. Another reason could be that Force Touch is a binary standpoint, wherein you either press hard or don’t(logically speaking, there are varying levels of pressure with Force Touch too). 3D Touch, however, also measures how hard you press the display(with greater granularity). Whichever the reason, Apple have made their call and seem content with it.


3D Touch is present in all of Apple’s apps that come preinstalled in a contextually relevant manner. A developer API has also been available that’s led to vivacious developers and big names such as Instagram and Facebook to adopt 3D Touch into their apps.
