Suggested January 2024 How To Achieve Digital Minimalism On Iphone
Minimalism is not just a hip word. It is slowly becoming a way of life for many. As humans, we naturally seek to find order and peace in our cluttered life. Unsurprisingly it includes our digital life. It is easy to get addicted when carrying a mini-computer in your pocket.
Well, on the brighter side, all it takes is a couple of iPhone settings to get your life back on track. Read on to know how!
Why is the minimalist iPhone so important?
Minimalism is highly subjective. It depends on how we perceive things. I am not a fan of the bare-bones approach. Instead, I prefer striking a balance, and for this, moderation is the key.
Apps are designed to cash in on your attention. In other words, you are trading in your attention for the “privilege” to use the apps. A recent study says average Americans spend close to a decade staring at their phones. This calls for intervention. Let us explore how you can set up a minimalist iPhone.
Baby steps towards iPhone minimalism
It is important not to overwhelm ourselves. Instead, let us take small steps towards a minimalistic iPhone setup. The article will help you tackle information floods proactively.
1. Weed out apps
No, we are not asking you to uninstall everything on your iPhone. Instead, uninstall apps that you have not used in the past month. iOS shows a list of apps that you have never used. Delete these apps without blinking an eyelid. Here’s how to check-
Alternatively, use the Marie Kondo method. Open an app and see if “it sparks joy.” If it does, keep it. Else it is time to bid farewell.
2. Keep a tight leash on notifications
Anticipation of notifications (like messages, etc.) is very addictive. A study has found that notifications trigger dopamine and, thus, the brain’s reward points. Notifications can single-handedly kill your productivity. This is the reason you keep peeking at your iPhone so often.
However, you can reduce distraction by toggling off Sounds and Badges in the same menu. Meanwhile, deactivate notifications for unimportant apps.
3. Tidy up the Home Screen
I had a great sense of relief after customizing the iPhone dock. Thanks to the docked Entertainment folder, all my movie streaming apps are accessible. Learn more about using folders in upcoming sections.
Apple introduced widgets on iOS 14. Until recently, I failed to understand the real potential of widgets. Currently, I use a couple of widgets on the Home Screen. Smart Stack is an effective way to check on multiple apps without opening them. For example, I can quickly glance at what’s happening on iGeeksBlog without opening the app.
5. Create Smart Folders to declutter homescreen
All my apps were strewn around. I had to move through multiple Home Screens to search for apps. Smart Folders are like a container. You can use it to club the same type of files. You can create similar folders for work, travel, and much more. E.g., I have clubbed all my crypto and money-related apps into the “Finance” folder.
Creating Smart Folders is easy. Press and drag app icons on each other, and rename the folder!
6. Hide/unhide the Home Screen pages
Some apps are important, but we rarely use them. However, these apps end up cluttering the Home Screen. They add to the visual bulk. The best way to tackle this is to move less frequently used apps to a particular Home Screen. Now, hide the Home Screen from plain sight. Long-press the screen till the icons start wiggling.
Tap the Home screen dots → select the Home Screen you want to hide. When needed, follow the same steps to unhide the Home Screen.
7. Use a minimalistic wallpaper
Bright and jazzy wallpapers can cause visual fatigue. A minimalistic iPhone wallpaper will keep you grounded and remind you of the journey. Up the game with inspirational wallpapers. Check out our selection of the best iPhone minimalist wallpapers.
Regain control of your digital life
We spend a significant amount of time on our phones daily. It is mighty important to take care of our digital lives. Apps and services are designed to be addictive. This calls for deliberation from our side. You have to separate the wheat from the chaff and focus on essentials.
Here’s how you can regain control of your life.
1. Keep a tab on screen time
Studies have revealed that screen time and psychological well-being are interrelated. Screen time is an effective tool. You can monitor activities across apps. I use App Limits to restrict time spent on social media apps.
2. Leverage Focus Mode
Focus Mode is the most impressive digital well-being feature in iOS 15. It helps me concentrate on the task at hand while eliminating digital distractions. Try out Focus Mode to treat the constant itch of checking your phone for notifications and updates.
I use a customized Focus setup. You can allowlist family members to accept calls from them.
3. Use the Downtime ploy
Digital Detox is an important concept. It refers to disconnecting from digital devices like smartphones, televisions, and laptops. I use Downtime extensively on my phone during weekends. It helps rejuvenate and connect with surroundings.
Further, iOS also lets you schedule Downtime. When Downtime is activated, you will receive calls only from the allowed listed contacts.
How to use iPhone as a minimalist
The concept of minimalism is subjective in nature. Purists suggest ditching using smartphones entirely. It is not exactly a practical approach. We need to strike a balance instead of risking relapse with extreme measures. As a minimalist, here’s how I use my iPhone:
1. Buy an alarm
Using an alarm clock on iPhone is convenient. However, we tend to look at our phones before sleeping and after getting up. It is an unhealthy habit. I suggest buying an old-school alarm. Keep your iPhone in another room. Please refrain from using it at least 45 minutes before bed and after waking up.
2. Embrace the change
Smartphone addiction is real! Cutting down on iPhone usage can get intimidating at the beginning. I suggest taking small steps instead of going all in. There is a good chance you will fall back to old ways. Don’t beat yourself up. Be proud of the progress and embrace the change.
3. Take out your iPhone with a purpose
I have cultivated a strong habit. Always ask yourself why you are taking out your iPhone. For instance, it is alright to take out your iPhone for booking an Uber or checking for directions. The action should be purpose-oriented. In other words, avoid taking out your iPhone to mindlessly scroll Insta feed or check Snaps.

How To Play Xbox On Iphone
The new Xbox app for iOS and iPadOS devices is here and it now allows you to stream games on the same network directly from your console. This has been a much-requested feature since game streaming was announced by Microsoft back in 2023. After numerous beta tests and negotiations with Apple, the company has finally managed to release the app for all iOS devices.
This new Xbox app is not to be confused with Microsoft’s xCloud game streaming service that uses dedicated servers instead of your local Xbox console to stream games. xCloud is still very much in production, and if reports are to be believed, then Apple’s restrictions will force Microsoft to put out dedicated apps for each game that they wish to introduce with xCloud. This will end up not only being cumbersome for Microsoft but also for users that you wish to use xCloud on iOS and iPadOS devices.
For now, you can make full use of the new Xbox app and stream your entire game library from the cloud in your entire home. Let’s take a look at how you can do this.
1. Things you will need
An iOS or iPadOS device running iOS 14 or later
The latest Xbox app — Download Link
An Xbox Series X, an Xbox Series S, an Xbox One, an Xbox One X, or the Xbox One S
The same Bluetooth Xbox controller paired to your console and iOS/iPadOS device
2. Enable Remote features on your Xbox
Power on your Xbox and press the Xbox button when you are on the home screen.
Now use the shoulder buttons to navigate to the ‘Profile’ tab.
Select ‘Settings’ to access your console settings.
Select ‘Remote features’ in the right tab.
Now check the box for ‘Enable Remote features’ at the bottom of your screen.
Select ‘Test Remote Play’.
Xbox will now test your network and show you a report after the test is complete. This will help you determine if your Xbox is ready for the remote play functionality.
If there are any issues faced during the test or if you are using a 2.4GHz network then we recommend you make the necessary changes before proceeding with the next guide.
Once your Xbox is tested and ready for remote play, simply follow the guide below to set up your device.
3. How to play Xbox on your iOS device
Start by downloading and installing the new Xbox app on your iOS or iPadOS device using the link above.
Once installed, launch the app and tap on ‘Sign in’.
Now sign in to the app using your Xbox account credentials.
When you are signed in, you will be taken back to the welcome screen. Now tap on ‘Set Up Console’ at the bottom of your screen.
Make sure the device is connected to the same network as your Xbox (this is not necessary but recommended for an easy pairing process for the first time). Once you tap ‘Set Up Console’ your TV should display a 6 or 12 digit code.
Note: If your console does not power on and display the code automatically, power it on manually and try the steps again. You should be able to get a code by manually turning on your console. Additionally, if your Xbox can link with your account in the cloud then it might skip this step for you.
Once you enter the code, your Xbox will be connected to the Xbox app on your iOS device and you will be taken to the home screen where you should be able to view your entire game library currently stored on your console. When you are on the home screen, tap on the ‘My Library’ icon as shown below.
Your console should show up here under the Consoles tab. It will also display your console’s storage space as well as its current state. If your console does not appear in this section then you might want to try the pairing process again by tapping on ‘Set up console’ again. Additionally, if everything has been set up correctly then you should recheck if remote play features have been enabled for your Xbox and then restart the console.
In the My Library tab under the Consoles section tap on your console.
This will bring up a sub-menu at the bottom of your screen. Tap on ‘Remote play on this device’.
The device will now switch to landscape mode and display a spaceship animation. This is meant to signify the connection process.
You will now get a pop up saying ‘Xbox would like to find and connect to devices on your local network’. Tap on ‘Ok’ to proceed to the next step.
Now if you have already connected a controller then you will be good to go right away. But if you have not connected the controller to your iOS device, then the Xbox app will prompt you to do so.
You can refer to this comprehensive guide by us to help you pair your controller to an iOS or iPadOS device easily.
And that’s it! Your console home screen should now be visible to you as is. If your console was powered off, then it should turn on automatically and display the home screen to you. You can then use your controller to navigate the home screen and launch any game that you would like to play on your iOS or iPadOS device.
Can I remote play only on WiFi?
No, Mircosoft has made it pretty clear that you do not need to be on the same network to use the remote play functionality. You can access your Xbox directly from the app and stream games even on a cellular network. Your cellular network will have to be a minimum 4G and this will use up a lot of data.
So if you are on a metered data plan then you should use this functionality wisely. Additionally, the app will also let you know if the current cellular network is not suitable for streaming games.
Can’t pair my Xbox controller to my iPhone or iPad?
If you are unable to pair your controller then it is likely that it is running an older firmware. This might come as a surprise to many but Microsoft does indeed release firmware updates for its Xbox controllers to fix bugs and introduce performance improvements.
Compatibility with iOS devices was added much later on which is why it requires a firmware update. Additionally, the controller does not update to the latest firmware automatically and needs to be manually updated from your console which is why this feature tends to go unnoticed by most users. You can refer to this guide by us to easily update the firmware of your Xbox controller.
Once the firmware has been updated to the latest version, you should have no trouble using it with your iOS or iPadOS device. If you still end up facing issues during the pairing process, then you should consider updating to the latest iOS or iPadOS released by Apple.
Apple introduced support for controllers in 2023 and only managed to get them working properly after iOS 13.2 and later on. If you are running an older version of iOS then it is likely the cause of all your pairing problems. You can easily solve this by updating to the latest version of iOS 14 available for your device.

Offloading an app is similar to uninstalling the app from your phone but in a slightly different manner. It deletes the temporary files and storage occupied by the app, which is equivalent to clearing trash, but retains its important data. After you reinstall the app, your data is restored automatically. You can offload all apps on your iPhone one by one as shown below:
Scroll down and find the app that you want to offload. Tap on it and hit the “Offload App” button.
Tap on “Offload App” in the confirmation prompt that appears.
Restart your phone to free up the storage left after offloading the app.

How To Disable Shared Albums On Iphone
Apple provides a unique way of sharing pictures with your loved ones through what it calls “Shared Albums”. As the name aptly says, Shared Albums is where you host pictures that you want to share with your friends and family where everyone can not just view the content you share but also upload pictures from their own devices to share them with others.
If you use Shared Albums on your iPhone but don’t find it useful, the following post should help you disable Shared Albums on your devices and explain what happens when you do it.

How to disable Shared Albums on iPhone
If you no longer want to use or view Shared Albums from your iPhone, you can disable it on your device. For this, open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Inside Settings, select Photos.
On the next screen, scroll down and turn off the Shared Albums toggle under “Albums”.
You will be prompted with a message that tells you that this action will delete all shared photos from your iPhone. To confirm, tap on OK.
Shared Albums will now be disabled on your device.
Related: How to Use iCloud Shared Photo Library on iPhone
What happens when you disable Shared Albums inside iOS Settings?
When you disable Shared Albums on your iOS Settings app, the Shared Albums section will disappear when you access the Albums tab inside the Photos app. Your iPhone will lose access to:
Albums you’ve created and shared with others.
Albums others created and shared with you.
This will also remove all the pictures that were shared inside an album from this particular device. Since the Shared Albums toggle is device-specific, you’re only essentially disabling Shared Albums from appearing on your iPhone.
You’ll still be able to access the albums you’ve shared or were invited to on all of your other Apple devices. What this means is that you can have Shared Albums enabled for some devices signed into your iCloud account and disabled for other devices.
Disabling Shared Albums, thus doesn’t delete any content from these albums, but only disables the feature on the iPhone where you turned off Shared Albums. If you wish to stop sharing a shared album’s content with someone, you will have to delete a shared album from your library or remove someone from the shared album.
Can others access your Shared Albums when you disable them?
Yes. When you disable Shared Albums, these albums will only not show on one of your devices. All the content that’s currently inside the Shared Albums you created or are a part of will remain the same way when you disable Shared Albums from the Settings app on iOS. Since Shared Albums only gets disabled on the iPhone you used to turn it off, subscribers of your shared album or the people you invited you to view their album won’t notice a difference.
Photos that you and others share in a shared album will remain for as long as the pictures aren’t deleted or the album isn’t deleted by the creator. Unlike deleting a Shared Album, disabling it only switches off its visibility on one of the user’s devices.
iOS will only remove the Shared Album content from the device you disabled the option on. You will continue to have access to this content on other devices where you have Shared Albums enabled like a Mac, an iPad, or another iPhone.
Can you access it later when you re-enable Shared Albums?
Yes. As has been explained above, your Shared Albums will continue to exist even when you disable the feature on one of your devices. Even when the option is disabled on one device, you will be able to view and see all content inside albums you shared or was shared with you on any other Apple device signed in with the same iCloud account.
When you re-enable Shared Albums on the device you disabled it on, you should be able to see the Shared Albums section instantly inside the Albums tab on Photos. Depending on the number of photos shared, it may take a while for all the photos to re-appear inside the albums but they will eventually show up when they’re synced completely.
That’s all you need to know about disabling Shared Albums on an iPhone.

How To Merge Duplicate Photos On Iphone
In the following post, we’ll explain all the ways you can find and merge duplicate photos from your iPhone.
Can you merge duplicate photos on an iPhone?
Yes. The native Photos app on your iPhone (with iOS 16 update) allows you to find duplicate pictures as well as videos from your library automatically. For this, your iPhone will continuously index your Photos library and search for pictures that are identical. Pictures may be classified as identical if they’re exact copies with different metadata or if they’re stored in different image resolutions and file formats. Even pictures that are captured with slight differences may get picked up as duplicates on Photos.
When two photos are merged, iOS will keep the photo with the highest resolution and combine the metadata of all of its duplicates into the merged photo. The rest of the duplicates will be removed from your photo library.

What do you need?
For your iPhone to detect duplicates and merge them, you need the following things:
Your iPhone runs on iOS 16 or later. Older versions of iOS won’t be able to detect or merge duplicate photos.
You indeed have duplicate photos in your library. The Photos app won’t show you any duplicates if there aren’t any pictures that are identical.
Your iPhone has indexed all of the photos in your library. If the duplicates are recent pictures in your library and you have a ton of pictures stored on your iPhone, it may take a few hours or days until duplicate pictures show up inside the Photos app.
The iPhone is plugged in to charge and is locked for duplicate photos to be detected.

How to find duplicate photos on an iPhone
When you’re ready with the aforementioned requirements, you can start looking for duplicates on your iPhone. To locate duplicate pictures on iOS, open the Photos app on your iPhone.
Inside Photos, tap on the Albums tab at the bottom.
On this screen, select Duplicates under “Utilities”. You will also see the number of duplicates that the Photos app has detected from your library.
In the Duplicates screen that appears, you will see all the pictures and videos that iOS has detected to be identical from your Photos library. The pictures that are identical will be paired together under the respective dates on which their original version was saved or captured.
At the bottom of this Duplicates screen, you will see the total number of pictures that have been found on your iPhone.
How to merge duplicate photos
Once you’ve located all the duplicate photos in your library, you can proceed to merge them one-by-one or combine them in bulk, based on your preference.
Case 1: Merge one duplicate photo at a time
If there are multiple duplicate photos on your iPhone, you can merge them one at a time. For this, get to the Duplicates screen as explained in the guide above.
Inside Duplicates, open one of your duplicate pictures by tapping on it.
When the picture opens in full screen, tap on Merge at the top right corner.
In the prompt that appears, select Merge Exact Copies to confirm the merging process.
You can also merge identical pictures from within the Duplicates screen by first locating the picture you want to merge. Now, tap on Merge on the right-hand side of the selected duplicate pictures.
To confirm your decision, tap on Merge Exact Copies in the prompt that appears at the bottom.
The Photos app will now keep the image with the highest quality and add all relevant metadata from the duplicates inside this image.
The rest of the duplicate images will be removed from your photo library.
Case 2: Merge multiple duplicate photos at once
The Photos app makes it easy to merge and remove more than one duplicate pictures at once from your library. To merge multiple pictures on your iPhone, go to the Duplicates screen inside the Photos app.
Inside Duplicates, tap on Select at the top right corner.
Now, you can start selecting the pictures you want to merge by tapping on Select on the right-hand side of each of the duplicates.
When you tap on Select, all the duplicates of the same image will be highlighted with blue tick icons. To select more, repeat the above step.
Once you’ve made your selection, tap on Merge at the bottom.
The Photos app will now ask you for your confirmation. To proceed with the merging, tap on Merge Exact Copies from the prompt that appears at the bottom.
The Photos app will now keep images with the highest quality and add all relevant metadata from the duplicates inside the images that are kept.
The rest of the duplicate images will be removed from your photo library.
Case 3: Merge all duplicate photos
If you wish to merge all of the identical pictures saved on your iPhone, you can do that by first going to the Duplicates screen inside the Photos app.
On this screen, tap on Select at the top right corner.
To merge all your duplicates, tap on Select All at the top left corner.
All the pictures inside the Duplicates screen will now be marked with blue tick icons. To merge all of these pictures, tap on Merge at the bottom.
The Photos app will now ask you for your confirmation. To merge all the duplicate pictures, tap on Merge Exact Copies from the prompt that appears at the bottom.
iOS will keep images with the highest quality and add all relevant metadata from the duplicates inside the images that are kept.
The rest of the duplicate images will be removed from your photo library.
What happens when you merge duplicate photos on iPhone?
When you merge one or more duplicates, iOS will keep the version with the highest quality on your iPhone. This version will also include the combined metadata of all the duplicates of the identical picture. The merged picture will be kept in your library. iOS will then remove the rest of the duplicates from your iPhone. The rest of the duplicates will be moved to the Recently Deleted album inside the Photos app where they’ll be stored for up to 30 days after which they’ll be deleted permanently from your iPhone.
Where do you find duplicate photos that were removed from your library?
On the next screen, you will see all the pictures that were removed from your library during the merging process. You can tap on a picture to open it and from there you will get options to recover or permanently delete the picture. If you wish to remove the remaining versions of the duplicate pictures from your iPhone, tap on Select at the top right corner.
Now, select the pictures from the Recently Deleted screen until you see blue tick icons on each of them.
Once selected, tap on Delete at the bottom left corner to permanently remove the selected pictures from your iPhone.
Alternatively, you can tap on Delete All at the bottom left corner if you wish to clear the recently Deleted section from the device.
What else can you do with duplicate photos?
So you found pictures inside the Photos app that are identical and you don’t want to merge them since they aren’t relevant to you now or you don’t need to store them on your iPhone. If you don’t wish to merge duplicate photos, you can use the Delete function to remove both the original and duplicate items from your photo library.
To delete all of your duplicate photos, go to the Duplicates screen inside the Photos app.
On this screen, tap on Select at the top right corner.
Now, you can start selecting the pictures you want to delete by tapping on Select on the right-hand side of each of the duplicates.
When you tap on Select, all the duplicates of the same image will be highlighted with blue tick icons. To select more, repeat the above step.
If you wish to delete all of the duplicates, tap on Select All at the top left corner.
Once you’ve made your selection, tap on the Trash icon at the bottom right corner.
The Photos app will now prompt you to ask for your confirmation. In the prompt that appears, tap on Continue.
All the selected duplicates including the original images and their copies will now be sent to the Recently Deleted album on the Photos app. You can keep the deleted images there for another 30 days or choose to delete them permanently.
Duplicates album doesn’t appear on the Photos app. Why?
Where iOS finds identical pictures on your iPhone, you will see them appear inside the Duplicates section when you access the Albums screen inside the Photos app. If you can’t see the Duplicates albums on the Photos app, it could be because:
Your iPhone is running on iOS 15 or older. The Duplicates album only appears on iPhones that have been updated to iOS 16 or later.
There are no pictures or videos in your library that iOS considers exact copies.
You have a ton of pictures saved on your iPhone in which case the Photos app needs to index your photo library before it can find duplicates. If you only recently bought an iPhone and you restored pictures on them from a backup, then you will need to wait a few days before you start seeing duplicates inside the Photos app.
The pictures that were duplicated were created or added recently, which also requires a few more days for your photo library to be indexed.
If you own an iPhone that’s already running iOS 16 or newer and you’re absolutely sure there are duplicate photos and videos on your device, then you may want to wait for a few days to a week for the photo library to be indexed. On its support page, Apple suggests that the detection process will require your iPhone to be locked and connected to a charger. If your device is being used for a bunch of background processes and other activities, the detection process may take longer.
In our testing, we couldn’t see the Duplicates album for at least a couple of hours since creating a dozen duplicates of pictures in our library. Your waiting time may be longer than this based on the size of the library stored on your iPhone. In some cases, the duplicates inside your photo library won’t appear for a week or even months, like in this user’s case.
That’s all you need to know about merging duplicate photos on an iPhone.
