You’ll need to check the devices’ compatibility, adopt a feasible method to join monitors, adjust their position, and tweak projection settings. Regarding the same, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you connect multiple monitors.

Check total no. of ports available

It’s essential to check the compatibility before determining the number of screens you can hook up. Connecting dual monitors is much easier and more feasible than a triple, quad, or more.

While there’s no limit to the number of screens you can hook up, you should consider the number of ports available on your mainboard and graphics cards. For example, some motherboards can come with one or even more monitor ports, depending on the iGPU and the manufacturer.

Also, if you plan to connect in a daisy-chain fashion, note that you require monitors with both input and output DisplayPort 1.2 or Thunderbolt ports. Additionally, these interfaces should support the MST (Multi-Stream Transport) feature.

For using a wireless connection, you require a Miracast-compatible monitor. Along with that, your computer should support Wi-Fi. If nothing works for you, kindly use a wireless transmitter and receiver kit to cast or extend your display.

Although motherboards have integrated graphics as a part of the unit, most users prefer adding a discrete GPU to their setup. Similarly, in a triple-monitor setup, you can place the primary display in the center with the other two to its adjacent left and right. While this setting is excellent, the best ergonomic option would be slightly tilting the screens towards you, as demonstrated in the figure. Note that this requires a slightly bigger desk space.

While regular users are happy with dual or triple monitor setups, four or more monitors can benefit those seeking a tremendous amount of screen space. Additional Tip: One difficulty we all face when connecting multiple displays is the need for more desk space. To solve this, try mounting your monitors, which lets you adjust the angle, height, and position quite easily. Once you’ve appropriately arranged the monitors, it’s time to hook them up. There are different techniques to do it, and this section guides you through each of them in detail.

Now, plug the other end into the secondary monitor.

Repeat the process for all the other monitors on your setup.

Another useful method to set up multiple monitors is daisy chaining. It simply means hooking up the displays to one another sequentially. This helps keep the cables organized, and you do not have to rely solely on the motherboard or graphics card ports.

In the chain, all your monitors should have DisplayPort or Thunderbolt ports with MST enabled, except for the last one. Once you’ve checked the compatibility, kindly go through the following steps on daisy chaining multiple monitors:

Here, find and select the MST setting, which should be under the System option.

Ensure that it is enabled. You may need to press Yes if a confirmation prompt pops up.

Again, open the OSD menu. This time, find and turn on the Displayport 1.2 option.

Now, plug the dedicated power cables into all your monitors. Ensure that they have sufficient power.

Take a Thunderbolt or DisplayPort cable (prefer using shorter ones) and connect it to the output port on your PC.

Next, take another Thunderbolt or DisplayPort cable and connect it to the output port of the primary display. Join the other end of your secondary monitor’s input port.

Repeat the process for other monitors.

A docking station is an excellent tool that lets you extend the number of ports on your laptop or desktop computer. This can come in handy if your motherboard or graphics card doesn’t have sufficient interfaces to connect multiple monitors.

Similarly, a high-end USB Hub with HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces can also be utilized. An HDMI Splitter is also a popular choice, but this can’t be used for extending your display.

Daisy chaining simply means wiring all your monitors in a sequence similar to the garland of daisy flowers (monitor-to-monitor connection). This way, you do not require additional computer ports, all the cables stay organized, and additionally improve the screen space.

However, daisy chaining is only possible on monitors having DisplayPort 1.2 or Thunderbolt ports. Also, the DisplayPort should support Multi-Stream Transport (MST) which is responsible for transporting multiple video signals through a single cable.

The graphic drivers should be updated

Your GPU and monitors should have DisplayPort 1.2 or thunderbolt ports

Your monitors should have both input and output ports (the last in the chain can have only the input port)

Your monitors and graphics card should support the DisplayPort 1.2 MST feature (except the last one in the chain)

Adapters or converters do not support daisy chaining

First of all, ensure you have gathered all the necessary tools. As mentioned earlier, you’ll need monitors with both input and output DisplayPort 1.2 or Thunderbolt ports that support the MST feature.

Next, you need to know it’s possible to daisy chain only a certain number of monitors, depending on your GPU’s highest supported display resolution. Below is the complete chart that should give you an idea of the number of screens you can connect.

Now, kindly gather the same number of DisplayPort or Thunderbolt cables as the monitors you’re going to daisy chain. Note that the latter one provides a higher bandwidth (4K@60Hz for two and 1080p@60Hz for six displays).

Once you’ve gathered all the necessary items, you need to now configure MST settings on all your screens (except the last one). For example, in a quad-monitor, the first three in the chain require MST settings to be enabled while the fourth one doesn’t necessarily need to support the feature.

Here’s a quick demonstration of how to turn on MST settings on any monitor:

Find and press the dedicated button to open the On-Screen Display (OSD) menu. It is located in the bezel but can be distinct for different models and brands.

Navigate to the System option.

Next, select MST and move to the right pane.

Here, choose the Enabled or ON option and exit the OSD menu.

In some monitors, you may need to select the Yes option if a confirmation prompt pops up.

Repeat the process on all your monitors.

While most modern monitors automatically adapt to the DisplayPort 1.2 settings, some still require it to be enabled from the On-Screen Display menu. Here’s a simple guide on how you can do just that:

Use the dedicated button to launch the OSD menu.

Move to the Display or Input Source section, whichever is available on your monitor.

In some models, you’ll need to press Yes to save the settings.

Now, repeat this on all your screens.

Note: If you turn on MST keeping the DisplayPort 1.2 disabled, the other monitors may only mirror the content rather than extend the workspace.

The next step is to position the monitors based on your workspace and preference. Also, you need to consider how far you’re sitting from the monitor and the number of screens you’re setting up.

If you’re setting up dual monitors of identical sizes, place them both right in front of you. The inner edges should coincide, forming a semi-circle. However, if one of the displays is bigger than the other, place the primary one in front of you, and the smaller one on your side.

For a triple-monitor setup, the best ergonomic method is placing the primary screen in front of you, and the two on the sides (half of a semi-circle). You can also rotate the mounted displays vertically to save desk space or view content efficiently.

Many photographers struggle when trying to shoot a scene with lots of contrasting lights and shadows. For instance, a landscape scene with lots of bright sun and shadows might look beautiful in person, but when you try to capture it with your camera, the brights may be too bright or the darks too dark. A solution is to use HDR (or High Dynamic Range) processing. 

HDR images are created by merging several photos of different exposures into one. If you’ve ever seen an HDR image, you may have been impressed by the detail the picture shows: both in lighter and darker areas. The shadows aren’t flat, and the brights aren’t blown out. HDR is the happy medium of photography. The best part is that you can edit images using HDR in Lightroom.

What Does HDR Mean In Lightroom?

HDR images are created using a process called bracketing. Bracketing combines several photos taken at different exposures into one picture with a more detailed and more accurate display of highlights, mid-tones, and shadows. The process is popular with landscape photographers, as it can be challenging to get details in both shadows and highlights using nothing but natural light.

Landscape photography is also a great fit for HDR processing because the scenes need to be as static as possible. Bracketing places the images on top of each other, so the process requires three or more images that are near replicas of each other except for their exposures. This can be tough if you work with moving subjects like animals or people. You’ll also need a tripod to ensure you get the same exact image every time.

Once you have the images, you can merge them in Lightroom. You can use a few different merge settings to get the final image just right.

How To Merge An HDR Image In Lightroom Step 1: Upload The Bracketed Images

Upload the images you want to use for the HDR process. Remember, these should be nearly identical except for the exposures; otherwise, the process won’t work well.

Step 2: Select The Images

You can also select images from the filmstrip while working in the Library or Develop modules. 

Step 3: Merge The Images Step 4: Set Merge Settings

Once you select to merge your images, the HDR Merge Preview window will open. Wait a few moments for Lightroom to make a preview of the final image — the more photos you select to merge, the longer it will take, so be patient.

Once the preview is created, you’ll see a few settings to the right of the merged image.

The Auto Align setting automatically lines up the photos in case the camera moved a bit between taking the individual images (for example, if you were holding the camera by hand rather than using a tripod). 

This box will be checked automatically, and it doesn’t hurt to leave it checked to ensure the most accurate merge. The Auto Settings box will also be checked already. This will automatically make minor adjustments in the tone of the merged photo.

The Deghost setting is also important in the final merged image. Deghost is also useful in case anything unwanted is featured in the photo, particularly if the subject (if there is one) moved slightly between shots. Obviously, even when using a tripod, objects like trees and clouds might still move, resulting in a strange “ghost” effect near those objects. The deghost setting makes Lightroom automatically reduce the ghost effect.

You can select the Deghost strength from the options provided: Low, Medium, or High (or None). The option you choose entirely depends on the bracketed image set you shot and your preferences. Each HDR image will require something different, but in most cases, Medium works well.

Below the Deghost strength settings, you’ll see the Show Deghost Overlay checkbox. Check this to view the areas of the “ghost” effect that Lightroom detects. The ghost effect appears as a translucent red highlight.

The image will appear in the preview. You’ll be able to notice the difference when looking at one of the images before you merged them alongside the merged image.

How To Refine Your Merged HDR Photos In Lightroom

Once you’ve merged the images, there are a few ways you can further refine and enhance the final product. Some photos may benefit from boosting the exposure or contrast, while others may need an adjustment of highlights and shadows or even white balance.

For instance, the HDR process in the below image brought out details in both the darkest and lightest parts of the scene, but we can bring out the shadows on the left side even further to brighten it a bit more. 

In addition, because the HDR process can brighten the dark areas up and brings the light areas down, the resulting image is sometimes flattened. We can fix this by increasing the contrast, which will help the image pop.

Should You Always Use HDR When Editing Photos?

Because HDR can bring out so many details in an image, you’d think you should always edit using HDR, right? Actually, no! Whether or not you use HDR depends entirely on the photo you want to edit and whether you’ve planned to create an HDR image.

First, you won’t be able to create an HDR image without multiple bracketed images, and the photos need to be almost exactly the same. So if you haven’t planned to create an HDR image, you probably won’t be able to use this technique.

If you don’t already have a set of bracketed images, don’t worry. In some cases, you won’t even need the HDR process to bring out the details in your photo.
