Unless you’ve been living under a rock, metaphorically of-course, you must have read the news that Google doesn’t provide a free Google Apps plans anymore. Which means that if you want to host email for your domain with Google Apps, it is going to cost you $5/user/month. Millions of individual domain owners had been using Gmail for their email needs and will now need to either switch providers or lose access to their emails.

Thankfully, there are other options out there and one of them is Microsoft’s new and shiny chúng tôi service. Read on to find out how to use chúng tôi to host your email for your domain.

The first thing that you need to do is sign up for a chúng tôi account.

Enter your domain name in the text box, select the radio button that says “Set up chúng tôi for my domain” and hit Continue.

DNS Settings? What’s that?

Let’s take a step back to understand how email is delivered. DNS is the domain name system that lets you browse over to any website on the Internet by just using it’s domain name. It comprises of a bunch of different entries (records) for each domain name on the Internet. The servers that maintain these records are called DNS servers.

Each domain has an associated MX record. The MX record points to the server that is supposed to accept emails for that particular domain. This record is the one that has to be changed if you want chúng tôi to manage your email instead of Google or any other provider that you were using earlier. If you don’t know how to edit the DNS settings for your domain, head over to your domain registrar’s website and their tech support guys will be happy to handle them for you.

Once you’ve made the above changes, DNS systems around the world are notified of the change to your domain. This process happens automatically and your new settings can take a couple of hours to propagate throughout the Internet.

After a few hours, refresh the page and Outlook will detect the DNS changes you made and let you add users to your account. Add new users to your account from the “Member Accounts” link and start using your new chúng tôi email.

How To Manage Your Microsoft To

Do you use Microsoft’s To-Do to manage your tasks on your smartphone and Windows laptop. Would you like to do the same on your primary Linux desktop? With Ao, you can! Let’s see how you can manage your Microsoft To-Do from your Linux desktop.

Installation

Ao is available on multiple platforms. If you are on Linux, the easiest way to get the latest version is by using snap:

It’s worth noting that in Ubuntu comes with snap support baked-in by default, and you can find Ao’s snap in Ubuntu Software among the other “Productivity” apps.

If you aren’t fond of Snapcraft (here’s how to install Snapcraft if you disagree) and are using an Arch, Red Hat, or Debian compatible distribution or prefer AppImage, you can find packages of Ao at GitHub. After downloading the package for your distribution, install it like you would any other package. For example, on Debian, you would have to enter in a terminal something like:

At Ao’s Github page you will also find versions for Mac and Windows. We don’t know how many people would prefer it over Microsoft’s official app that is natively available on both platforms, especially since Ao doesn’t radically change or upgrade its features.

Sign in

Ao is a wrapper for Microsoft’s online version of To-Do. To use it, you have to be online and have an Outlook or Skype account. The first thing Ao will do after running is to ask for those login credentials. We won’t go through registering for Microsoft’s services and will skip to the app itself.

Like the Real Thing

Microsoft’s To-Do works in Ao in precisely the same way you’d expect from the web application simply because it is the web application.

On the left, you have a sidebar with all your task categories. At the top, you can see some predefined categories that help to better manage your tasks.

In Important, you will find all the tasks you have assigned a star to.

In Planned, all tasks with a date.

Assigned to you contains all tasks someone else has assigned to you, allowing you to share task lists.

In Flagged email, you will find all emails from your Outlook inbox that you marked with a flag.

Tasks acts as the home for all entries that you haven’t assigned elsewhere.

Managing Tasks and Lists

To add tasks to another list, select it and repeat the process.

The first option, “Add step,” allows you to add subtasks to your task, turning it into a mini-project. The second one, “Add to My Day,” adds the task to To-Do’s special “My Day” list that contains all active tasks of the day.

The rest of the options allow you to add a reminder, due date, select if (and when) the selected task will repeat, assign it a color/tag/category, add a file, or a note.

To move tasks from one list to another, you can “drag and drop” them with your mouse.

Finally, to create new lists, note the option with precisely that name at the bottom of the left category panel.

Desktop Power

With Ao, you can use shortcuts to create new lists, move between them, add, edit, mark as complete, or delete tasks. The predefined important categories have their own shortcuts, allowing you to jump directly to them.

The following is a list of the shortcuts we found most useful while using Ao:

We all know we’re supposed to change our passwords frequently, make them complicated, and use different ones for each site/service, but it can get really difficult to remember them all. Browsers can help you remember them, but do you have faith in that? We asked our writers, “Do you trust your browser to manage your passwords?”

Our Opinion

Damien answers a curt “absolutely not.” He doesn’t trust browsers. He uses a password manager app to manage his passwords.

Phil just keeps all his passwords in a book by his desk. “That way someone can’t just tap in and steal them; they have to actually come to my house to get them manually.” Plus, he figures it’s much easier to deal with them one at a time.

Ada also keeps her passwords written down on a pad. She only trusts her browsers with passwords for unimportant sites. She does note, “I do consider the book a single point of failure, meaning if it’s gone/destroyed/stolen, etc., it will be a pain to restore all the passwords.” She’s been considering making a copy of it and storing it in a separate location, but it makes it difficult since she’s always adding, changing, removing, and has it all in “super cryptic handwriting.” She jokes that she feels sorry for any thief for having to deal with it but considers it a safer option than a browser.

Alex, like Damien, also answers “no way.” He considers browser storage to be the weakest form of password storage and uses a dedicated password manager (Dashlane) to keep track of his passwords, admitting “I don’t even know the passwords to most of my accounts,” as they’re just randomly generated strings.

Fabio uses Dashlane to handle his passwords as well. “Saving your password on your browser is the worst thing you can do.”

Ryan admits he doesn’t trust his browser and doesn’t use a password manager either, even though he uses different passwords for mostly everything. He assumes it’s because he’s “a bit paranoid.” He points out that he’s read that “passwords are essentially useless since anyone determined enough can crack them,” so he thinks maybe he should be a little more trusting.

I take the same path as Ryan, but for me it’s because I am trusting. I use my browser and don’t use a password manager. The sites where I shouldn’t use the browser won’t allow me to save my password anyway, such as PayPal or my bank. That said, I also started keeping a list of my passwords, as I switch browsers frequently. Instead of paper, I keep them in an Evernote file and keep the app locked on my iPad and iPhone. That way I can always access them wherever I am. And like Ada, I make the list cryptic.

When it comes to building your website, choosing a domain name is one of the most important decisions you will make because it affects how the site is marketed and influences how site visitors feel about your brand.

Here are 11 tips to help make the right domain name decision.

1. Businesses Don’t Own Domain Names

No business “owns” a domain name.

Ownership is not possible with a domain name. Domain names are registered, and this registration entitles the registrant to use the domain.

So, it’s critical to never allow a domain name registration to lapse.

Failure to renew a domain puts it in danger of someone else registering it after it “drops” (when the registration expires).

Here are four tips to help keep a domain name securely registered:

Make sure your credit card information at the domain registrar is up to date.

Turning on automatic renewal is a good step for preventing the loss of a domain – but don’t count on it actually working. There are many anecdotes of people losing their domain after the automatic renewal failed to kick in.

Domain name registrars generally email alerts prior to when a domain is about to expire. Check every year (or quarterly) to make sure your domain registration email address is correct.

It’s not overly cautious to manually renew the domain registration before the auto-renewal date.

2. Should A Domain Name Match Your Business Name?

A domain name should generally match the name of the business.

But sometimes, creating a new web presence is an opportunity to reconsider the business name for something that’s more web-friendly, or that better reflects changing trends.

One of my past clients was a digital camera site that had to pivot quickly after the iPhone was introduced because fewer people were buying digital cameras. They changed the domain name to a more general scope, and they began reviewing a wide range of products.

Changing trends could be one reason the domain name doesn’t necessarily have to match the business name.

Sometimes, it might be best to brand the online business with something more attractive or snappy and keep the business name in the background.

That said, always register a domain name that matches the brick-and-mortar business, even if the online site uses another name. The business name can be redirected to the website name, or it could be kept in the background – whatever the business situation calls for.

3. Should You Use Choose A Domain Name With Keywords In It?

Domain names that use exact match keywords can tend to convert at a higher rate.

Keywords in the domain name communicate quickly that the site has what the visitor is looking for.

Someone looking for a taco restaurant will probably be more likely to choose “Hank’s Tacos” than “Jose’s Cantina.”

The keywords in the domain infer that the site not only has what they want, but actually specializes in it.

Keywords in the domain name don’t have a ranking bonus.

The true value of keywords in a domain name is attracting visitors with a greater intention of buying something or finding interest in the topic.

But keywords in a domain name are not the only way, or even the best choice, for a domain name.

Sometimes it’s better to choose a domain name that conveys the meaning of the topic.

4. Domain Names That Convey Meaning

Sometimes it makes sense to register a domain that conveys a meaning.

When choosing a meaningful domain name, it may be useful to think about the qualities you want your site to be associated with.

Returning to the example of On The Water, that domain name takes an angler to their happy place, which is located on the water.

Consider writing down the words that convey a special feeling or promise that you want the visitor to understand without thinking about it. For example:

Friendly.

Cheapest.

Fast.

Zippy.

Experts.

Nerds.

Friends.

Family.

Trustworthy.

Healing.

Or you might want visitors to associate your site with a place, for example:

Office.

Showroom.

Store.

Palace.

Oasis.

Online.

Zoo.

Hangout.

Zone.

Cafe.

Review synonyms for the quality you want a site visitor to associate with your site and play around with the words to find the right match.

5. Keep The Domain As Short As Possible

A domain name should be so short that it’s easy to type into a browser bar, but it should be long enough to communicate your intended message to your audience.

Some may find that domain names consisting of two to three words are optimal, while others may prefer a one-word domain. There is no hard rule about how short the domain should be.

What’s more important is to avoid using an overly long domain name that might be difficult to remember.

The rule of thumb for how short or long the domain name should be is to consider how the domain name may influence the potential site visitor.

6. Don’t Use Hyphens In Domain Names

Is it OK to use hyphens in a domain name today? Absolutely not.

Avoid using hyphens in a domain name.

Keywords in domains are not so important for ranking as to resort to cramming keywords into the domain name with hyphens.

It makes the site look sketchy and spammy.

Also, there is no ranking benefit from using keywords in the domain name.

7. Consider Registering Domain Name Variants

People mangle words in all kinds of wild ways.

I remember a theatrical venue that had a cabaret seating section, and I was told that half the people calling for tickets were asking for “Cabernet Seating.”

So, this may be arguable, but based on my experience, I believe it’s important to register reasonable domain name variants.

If your domain name is “WidgetExpert,” then you might want to consider registering “WidgetExperts,” as people tend to add an “s” to the end of a singular domain name.

People may remember your domain name incorrectly in many ways, so try to anticipate that and register the domain name variants – then redirect them to the correct domain.

Singular and plural variants are common mistakes, but actual spelling mistakes might be something else to consider. Redirect all of them to the actual domain, and you might even pick up some links from sites that linked using the wrong version.

One last benefit is that this is also a proactive defensive measure that will block future competitors from registering a variant of your domain name.

8. Defensive Domain Registration

Defensive domain registration refers to registering domains that a competitor might register in the future.

It is prudent to register the singular and plural versions of a domain name and also the .net, .org, .biz, .info, and .us versions.

If your site visitors are international and/or speak English, it may be useful to register the .ca, and chúng tôi versions of the domain name as well.

One can choose not to register those domains. But in the event of a competitor registering one of those variants, the publisher will have to go through the headache of hiring an attorney to send a cease and desist request to someone (possibly in a developing country) with the hope that the competitor will be afraid enough to turn it over.

Registering those extra versions is not only defensive, but those extra domains could come in handy for other purposes later on.

9. What If The Dot-Com Domain Is Already Registered?

Dot-com is quite likely the most desired top-level domain (TLD) because it’s what most people tend to look for.

If someone is simply hanging on to the domain and not doing anything with it, it’s possibly okay.

But site visitors really like to see that dot-com in the URL.

An increasingly popular choice is to look into country code top-level domains (ccTLDs).

10. Country Code And General Top-Level Domain Names

Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) are domains that are specific to a country.

Choosing a ccTLD is popular right now, such as the .io or .me ccTLDs.

There are also new general top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .agency.

Country code domains are generally best if they match the country of the potential site visitor. Domains in the .ca and the .uk registry are ccTLDs.

Site visitors tend to prefer ccTLDs that are specific to their country.

So, if your clients are in Australia, using the .au version of the domain might make sense.

Traditionally, ccTLD domains tend to convert at a higher rate within their respective countries because that’s what the citizens of those countries trust.

Note: Registering certain top-level domains may require citizenship. For example, .us domains require U.S. citizenship/residency.

11. Has The Domain Been Previously Registered?

Some domains have been previously registered.

This may or may not be an issue.

Since the old days of SEO and until now, there has been an issue with penalties sticking to a domain name.

What happens is that, sometime in the past, a spammer used a domain and burned it (penalized by Google and unable to rank), causing the spammer to let the domain registration lapse so that the domain becomes available again.

Then, when the next business registers that domain, it finds it impossible to rank it for anything meaningful. The site might pop into the bottom of the top 10 once a month for a few days, but then it drops back to the second or third page of the search results – or worse, nowhere.

Before registering a domain, it’s wise to visit chúng tôi where entering the domain name will show whether it has ever been registered.

As I understand it, Google does not provide a way to remove a legacy penalty from a domain that received a penalty years earlier.

The Google Search Console (GSC) will not report that there is a manual action. So there is no way to submit a reconsideration request for a penalty that the Google Search Console does not acknowledge.

The first time I heard of this happening was to a newbie SEO professional around 2005 who couldn’t figure out why his SEO site didn’t rank.

The folks over on WebmasterWorld figured it out for him, and one of the forum members contacted Google’s head of webspam, Matt Cutts, on behalf of the SEO newbie.

Cutts confirmed that there was a penalty from a previous registration.

Unknown to the SEO professional, the site had been used to spam on behalf of adult affiliate sites.

Cutts said he would take care of it, and the penalty was subsequently lifted.

Recently in 2023, a person popped up on one of Google’s Webmaster Hangout Videos with curiously similar symptoms.

The site had indeed been used in a spammy way years earlier.

The publisher submitted the URL directly to Google’s John Mueller.

I watched the domain to see if it was able to rank for its own domain name, and about a month and a half elapsed before it finally did.

Choosing The Best Domain Name

There are many considerations for choosing the best domain name, and I recommend considering all of the above tips when selecting yours.

The process of choosing a domain name can seem hard.

A trick to making the process easier is to simply ask what a site visitor might prefer, as that approach can be extremely helpful in choosing the best domain name.

Your Guide To Google’s Exact Match Domain Algorithm Update

The EMD, or Exact Match Domain update, was a 2012 Google algorithm update that targeted exactly what it is named: exact match domain names.

The intent behind this update was not to target exact match domain names exclusively, but to target sites with the following combination of spammy tactics: exact match domains that were also poor quality sites with thin content.

There were really no other nicknames for this update. It went by the EMD update, or Exact Match Domain update.

The major weakness that these websites had was the fact that SEOs would buy domains with exact match keyword phrases, build a site out, but have extremely thin content with little to no value on them. It was extremely easy to do. So easy, in fact, that it was almost like taking candy from a baby in terms of easy SEO wins.

Before the update happened, Google’s Matt Cutts warned the industry that this was going to be a focus of a future update in a webmaster video published on March 7, 2011.

Dr. Pete Meyers at Moz published an article just prior to the release of the EMD update, asking whether EMDs were in decline. His accompanying data showed a sharp decrease in the influence that exact match domains had on actual rankings.

Here are some industry reactions (for more, check out this thread on WebmasterWorld.

It makes me wonder what they mean by “Low Quality”.

-The second is not a quality site but not terrible. It is a two word keyword phrase .org without dashes. I could see it not being on page one based on it’s content, but there is no reason for it to be outside of the top 100. It is not that bad.

The EMD Update Was to be Run Periodically

Danny Sullivan at SearchEngineLand wrote that Google confirmed that the EMD algorithm is going to be run periodically, so that those that have been hit stay filtered or have a chance to escape the filter. This is also in place so that Google can catch what they may have missed during the last update.

Spammy Sites & Thin Content Were Big Hits

The goal of this update was to target spammy sites and sites with significant amounts of thin content providing little value beyond exact match words in the domain. Sites with stronger brand recognition and high quality content were less likely to be hit.

What If You Were Hit By the EMD Update?

If you were hit by the update, and you wanted to recover, the general consensus of the proper plan of attack was very similar to Panda:

You would want to get rid of and/or improve the poor quality content. Please note: Google has officially recommended that improving poor quality content is mostly the best solution, as opposed to removing low quality pages entirely.

A link profile audit would be beneficial to identify spammy inbound links that had low trust signals, and engage in a link remediation/removal campaign to remove them.

Then, revising your routine to add new custom, amazing content to your site every day.

And finally: engage in an SEO link acquisition campaign to increase your website’s trust and authority. After the removal of the bad links, continued acquisition would be necessary.

Was There a Pattern to Sites Hit By This Update?

Dr. Pete at Moz released a detailed study on this update. Based on his measurements of who got hit, approximately 41 EMDs fell out of the top 10, with a net change of about 36 domains after 5 new EMDs entered the top 10). One example site that fell out of the top 10 had an exact match domain. While it wasn’t exactly a spammy site, it was a fairly decent site whose only crime was choosing a keyword rich domain over the branded domain.

The majority of sites in the mix did seem to have more signals that communicated lower quality – things like low-authority, spammy link acquisition, aggressive keyword use, etc. – and they appeared to be ranking just because of the fact that they had an EMD.
