Today more than ever, people are capable of publishing their thoughts to a vast audience. Comments, tweets, and status updates are ubiquitous and constant. However, are we really focusing on the quality of the message we are putting out there? Are we really providing useful information or are we just adding to the noise?

Simply giving students a blogger ID and a twitter username is not enough. Unless they are working to develop the skills necessary to effectively convey their message to a receptive audience, then the value of the message is diluted. If that same student stood at a podium with a microphone, yet has not prepared a speech and has trouble using proper grammar, this student’s message could be lost on his or her audience. However, in this world of instant communication our students have the opportunity to engage and share with a global audience. As educators, we cannot let this chance slip by.

Keep Standards High

If we are going to enable our students to find and share their voice with the world, we need to equip them with a powerful skill that is timeless: writing effectively. Our students must realize that there is a BIG difference between “your” and “you’re” no matter what forum they are using to communicate a message. Consider this, how much effort does it take to edit 140 characters? Not much. I have spent the last eight years of my teaching career combing through student essays that are chock full of common errors: “then” vs. “than”, “it’s” vs. “its”, and knowing when to use an apostrophe to denote possession. These students learn from my feedback that their message is diluted. If I were to let this student move on without correcting his or her errors, this trend would continue and possibly diminish their capacity to reach their full potential. The same principles must apply in all forms of social media.

Educators must model effective writing and editing as well. I comb through thousands of tweets, blogs, and status updates from week to week, and one glaring pattern is typos. Some may argue that this is just a simple error and not a big deal. However, it is a big deal if we want to maintain the sanctity of the English language and get people to connect to our message. If you regularly cannot self-edit 140 characters, do you really think I am going to want to pay to see you speak? Want to buy your book? Or take you seriously as an educator? Not likely.

More Is Not Always Better

The second frustrating element of social media is the perpetual sharing of watered-down guides e.g., “500 Tips for Google” or “100 Ways to Use YouTube in the Classroom.” This is not conducive to learning or immediate implementation. Teachers must learn to filter and edit before throwing up one thousand and one ways to use something in the classroom. Focus on the message and think about the practicality of sharing suggestions. Will this help someone in his or her daily practice? Will it engage or entertain someone? Luckily, I have never been to a conference where the presenter gives the audience a book of one hundred pages and says, “Within these 100 pages you will find 100 unique ways to use Google in your classroom.” The presenter walks off stage and we clap. This would never happen. Think about your audience when you are publishing a tweet or blog post. We would never teach this way.

I am not trying to be preachy and humbly admit that I have been guilty of putting a message out there without proper edits. However, we must have high expectations of our students’ work. We need to get them to understand that college admissions counselors, prospective employers, etc. will not take them seriously if they are putting out poorly worded messages.

Before Posting, Examine Your Motives

Every educator I know is trying to find ways to present authentic assessment and give their students an audience for feedback and reflection. However, we must convey to our learners that a lot more eyes are watching than ever before. We all want our students to blog, connect, and, communicate, but we must make sure they are putting out polished, substantive information. The same goes for Twitter and any other form of social media. The best educators must model this skill daily and practice what they preach. Think about what information you are putting out there and why you’re presenting this to your PLN. What is your motive? Can someone really learn from this tweet? Or am I just looking to build my following number and increase the activity of my mentions column? Think about these questions and think about your audience. Are you really giving them something of substance?

As we reflect on how best to refine our students’ 21st century skills we must not lose sight of the timeless skill of effective communication. Remind students of the power of digital media and how much their words can impact the lives of others.

How Social Media Helps Seo

Most businesses know the importance of being active on different social media platforms. However, some might think of social media as an independent entity rather than something that impacts the rest of their digital marketing efforts.

Social media provides many great benefits on its own but also aids other areas of your digital marketing efforts – including SEO.

Understanding the relationship between social media and SEO can be a little tricky, though.

History of Social Media & SEO

While we can confidently say that a website’s social profiles do not directly and causally influence that site’s rankings, there’s actually a bit more to it than that.

The history of social media and SEO provides a look into the gray area of this subject.

No one outside of Google is ever going to know exactly what the search algorithm does and does not do; we have to rely on public announcements for that.

But here’s the scoop. Back in 2010, Danny Sullivan reported that Google had “social signals” that helped it rank organic results. That sounds sort of definitive.

In fact, Matt Cutts, who formerly led Google’s webspam team, later confirmed the “social pages as ranking signals” claim.

But the story doesn’t end there.

In 2014, Cutts modified his statements by saying that Google did not treat social media profiles as ranking signals, but rather as their own organic search results.

Two years later, Google Webmaster Trends analyst Gary Illyes confirmed Cutts’s 2014 take.

What we can say with confidence today is that social signals have a relationship with organic rankings, but they do not directly influence those rankings.

It’s just that the websites that will tend to be ranked at the top of the SERPs will probably have strong social presences with content shared across all their platforms.

So, yes, Google will rank websites with robust social profiles, but those profiles aren’t directly influencing those rankings. Those websites as a whole have to perform well to rank highly.

How Social Media Helps SEO

Social media isn’t a ranking factor, so it won’t directly help your rankings. While there’s no direct ranking correlation between the two, the benefits of social media do feed into SEO.

And if you’re trying to improve your SEO, it is especially important for you to invest in social.

Here’s why.

1. You Can Boost Your Content Performance

If you haven’t been using social media to share your content, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity. Social platforms are important places to share any type of content your business produces.

When you post content on your website and don’t go through the extra steps of sharing it anywhere, it’s just going to sit there.

You likely put a lot of work into creating it. Not sharing it is a waste.

Social gives you access to a much wider audience than you’d have on your website alone.

You might have amazing content that’s worthy of backlinks, but you won’t get them if it goes unnoticed.

And if these people who discovered your content through social thought it was valuable, some of them might want to share it for others to enjoy, too.

Content can spread easily through social media, even if you don’t have a large number of followers. All it takes is one person linking back to you for even more people to see it, and social media is a great place to get this started.

3. Social Profiles Can Rank for Search Terms

While how your website ranks might be a big concern for your business, you might not have put any thought into how your social profiles rank. When people look up your company using branded search terms, your social profiles have a chance of ranking along with your website.

If you have additional opportunities to rank for branded searches, why not?

People are searching for your brand, so they’re already interested in what you have to offer.

While most people searching for your brand will want to go to your website, there are also many who want to see what you have on social media. Your social media profiles can give a different view of your business than your website alone and provide additional information for those who want it.

For those who are still on the fence and trying to decide, having active and engaging social media profiles come up when they’re trying to do research could be the push they need.

4. You’ll Bring More Traffic to Your Website

The ultimate goal in SEO is usually to increase visibility and bring more visitors to your website. However, increasing your website’s rank isn’t the only way of bringing more traffic to your website.

By staying active on social media and posting the content your audience wants to see, you can bring in a lot more traffic to your website.

With so many people on social media today, you can guarantee that your target audience is there somewhere. These are people who may not have found out about your business through search results alone but can benefit from your products or services.

Have you ever noticed how many bloggers and social media marketers just tell people that they should go out try social media? How you shouldn’t worry about learning social it? That you’ll learn it on the fly and everything will be fine.

Well, I’m not one of those. It’s absolutely in your best interest to learn the basics of social media before risking your time and money.

Jumping into social media without at least learning the basics could be a major disaster. It probably won’t ruin your company. It probably won’t ruin you. But it will be a waste of time.

Taking the time to learn social media fundamentals gives you a starting point. It helps you decide where you are and hopefully where you should go.

If you don’t learn what the marketing technique is, how will you know what it’s capable of? How can you create goals and work towards them?

Taking the time to explore social media and soak up as much information as possible gives you a better understanding of what social media can do and how to create a plan.

On social media, a misstep can spread just as fast as a good campaign and consumers can be less than forgiving. Learning how to interact and promote a business shouldn’t endanger the brand.

Start with baby steps. Minimize the likelihood of something to go wrong. Learn as much as you can about web culture and online customer service.

Online consumers expect something much different than offline customers. You should know how to deliver it.

3. Experience Comes With Time – Who Has the Time?

Remember the common phrase, “don’t reinvent the wheel?” – Well don’t do it.

Marketers have been testing and exploring social media theories and sharing them online. Why would you want to go through that powerful information and have to learn it on your own?

You can test and explore and research your content, but we know that more often than not list posts go viral. There’s no need for you to take the time to test and explore that.

4. Learning Keeps You From Getting Frustrated

Think back to your childhood. If you’re anything like me, than math class was a horror. I’d sit there trying to do a problem and just not knowing how. After a few minutes of trying, I’d get frustrated and give up. It wasn’t until someone taught me what to do and explained to me why it is that way that I began to enjoy math.

Social media is the same way. There are fundamentals and there are strategies that you should know and understand. Don’t allow frustration lead to you giving up. We know social media is a powerful marketing tool. Don’t let it go.

5. How Are You Investing In Something You Know Little About?

It all comes down to money. How are you supposed to decide how much to invest in social media if you don’t know what it can do?

Learn what you’ll need to invest, both time and money, before throwing resources at it. Have a plan and create a budget. This will help increase the likelihood of success.

Information is key. To have a positive social media strategy you need to know as much as possible. That means both in regards to social media knowledge as well as strategies and fundamentals.

How are others in your industry doing? Why did their campaigns work? How can you recreate their success without copying them verbatim? Is social media for you?

A Movement Sequence To Help Students Maintain Self

An occupational therapist offers a series of calming whole-body exercises for students to do as a class throughout the school day.

I’ve been a practicing school-based occupational therapist for many years, working with children ages 3 to 18 who have a variety of sensory, self-regulation, and emotional regulation difficulties. In that time, I’ve honed a whole-body movement sequence that provides body awareness and mindfulness on a routine basis.

The sequence works well with a whole class, it takes only about 5 minutes, and students can do the exercises on a rug or mat right next to their desks. It’s best to do the sequence regularly and consistently—I recommend mornings, after lunch or recess, before transitions, and after any high-stimulation activities.

I utilize this sequence before my therapy sessions, and I’ve recommended it to many educators to maintain regulation and decrease fight-or-flight behaviors. The sequence should be done in order, from step one to step eight, and works for students in early elementary and middle school grades.

Note: It’s important to get medical clearance for students with possible musculoskeletal or physical contraindications before having them attempt any exercises in this sequence.

Steps in the Sequence

1. Downward-facing dog. This exercise provides proprioceptive input and vestibular input to the hands, arms, shoulders, and legs, so it’s helpful when students are feeling low levels of physical energy, high levels of physical energy, or emotional dysregulation (an inability to manage emotional responses well).

Students lie on their stomach with flat palms next to their shoulders, and push their body up so their weight is on their hands and feet, keeping their legs as straight as comfortably possible, and hold for 10 seconds.

2. Upward-facing dog. This provides proprioceptive input to the belly, back, arms, and legs and is especially helpful when students are feeling low levels of physical energy or high levels of physical energy.

Students lie flat on their stomach, palms flat on either side of the chest. They then press their body up, keeping their knees on the floor, bearing their weight through their palms. Next, they push their chest up from the floor, feeling the weight pressing down through their palms, and hold for 10 seconds.

3. Tabletop. Not only does the tabletop pose require a lot of physical strength and endurance, but also it has elements of sustained proprioceptive and vestibular inputs (rotational/head below knee). It’s a powerful exercise that can benefit students who are feeling low levels of energy, high levels of energy, or high levels of emotionality.

Students should begin on their hands and knees, shoulder width apart, palms flat on the floor with fingertips pointing toward their toes. They then straighten out their elbows and lift their hips up toward the ceiling, drawing their shoulder blades into their back and lifting their chest, while keeping their back flat (looking straight ahead). If they feel comfortable doing so, they should carefully and gently drop their head back slightly and hold for 5 to 10 seconds.

4. Child’s pose. This position provides both proprioceptive and vestibular inputs. By curling inward, students also have an opportunity to take a moment for themselves and visually block out the world. This is a good exercise to try if students are feeling high levels of physical and/or emotional energy.

Students start by kneeling on both knees and visualizing any challenging physical and/or emotional feeling as being at the center of their body. As they move their body inward, they should picture that feeling being squeezed away. Students bring their bottom toward their heels and stretch the rest of their body down and forward. Once they’re fully stretched, they relax their arms along the floor and rest their stomach along their thighs, with their forehead on the mat, holding the position for as long as it’s comfortable.

5. Wrist cross, ankle cross. This exercise can help your students feel where their wrists, hands, and ankles are by providing proprioceptive (deep pressure) input, while also crossing midline (which is great for focusing and calming). It is helpful when students are feeling emotionally or physically dysregulated; it also can wake them up if they’re feeling low levels of physical energy.

Students cross their wrists together, with the inside of one wrist pressing against the back of the other. They then push their wrists firmly together and hold for at least 5 to 10 seconds. Then they cross their legs together, with the inside of one leg pressing against the top of the other. Students push their legs firmly together, and hold this position for at least 5 to 10 seconds.

6. Students feel where their body is. When students feel physically and emotionally dysregulated and begin to enter fight-or-flight mode, it can be difficult to feel all the different parts of their body. Doing this exercise correctly is very calming because it tells each of the joints of the body where they are through proprioceptive input and relaxes the nervous system.

Students gently squeeze and say the name of each joint in the following order as they do the following:

Cross their hands over opposite shoulders

Cross their hands over opposite elbows

Cross their hands over opposite wrists

Squeeze each finger and the palm of their right hand, then do the same on their left hand

Cross their hands over their hips

Cross their hands over their knees

Cross their hands over their ankles

Cross their hands over their feet

7. Bubble breath with extended exhalation. This is a good strategy to use whether your students are feeling low energy, high energy, or high levels of emotionality. Getting oxygen to the brain can also help students think better and make clearer choices. The exhale breath is longer than the inhale breath.

Students breathe in through the nose slowly for 4 seconds and hold, then breathe out through the mouth slowly and with control for 6 seconds. Alternatively, they can breathe in through the nose slowly for 5 seconds and hold, and then breathe out through the mouth slowly and with control for 7 seconds. Repeat as needed.

8. Picture their peaceful place. Have your students visualize a moment or place that makes them feel the most peaceful. This is a good strategy for students to use when feeling high levels of emotionality.

Students close their eyes and think of a place that makes them feel calm and peaceful. Tell them to picture every detail—what it looks like, what different objects there feel like, any smells and any sounds—and to picture themselves there. Where are they in that special place? What are they doing? When they’re ready, they open their eyes.
