Suggested January 2024 How To Install Custom Themes In Windows 10

Windows 10 is a versatile platform when it comes to customization. One of the best (or at least most visually striking) examples of this is in the huge variety of alternative themes you can apply to it, capable of changing that flat W10 desktop into something different entirely.

Whether you want to stick to the safety of Microsoft’s official online theme collection, or peruse some of the incredibly creative Windows 10 themes at DeviantArt, we’ll show you how to install custom Windows 10 themes, along with all the necessary precautions.

Once you learn how to install your own themes, make sure to check out our list of the best Windows 10 themes.

Microsoft and Non-Microsoft Themes

Themes can be found in a few places. Microsoft actually makes quite a few available from their own website. However, the most interesting themes are available on sites like DeviantArt where independent designers create their own packs.

Non-Microsoft themes can’t be installed by default, however. We’ll first need to loosen Microsoft’s restrictions on theme installations.

How to Install Microsoft Themes

If you want to install one of Microsoft’s themes, it’s very straightforward.

1. Download the desired theme from the Microsoft website.

Here you can select a new theme from the pane on the left or make your own adjustments to the existing one – like changing the font style, background and colors. For more on how to use this area, check out our guide on creating your own Windows 10 themes.

How to Install Non-Microsoft Themes

1. Make a backup! Using a theme that doesn’t match can nuke your system, and there’s a non-negligible chance of that happening. A restore point is good, but an image backup is even better.

2. Download and install UltraUXThemePatcher (no longer available).

3. Find themes on websites like DeviantArt.

4. Copy theme files into “C:/Windows/Resources/Themes.” If the file contains themes for multiple builds of Windows 10, make sure you’re using the right one. You can find your build by pressing Win + R and typing winver into the command line.

Conclusion

It’s not too complicated to install new Windows 10 themes, though you need to be careful with the unofficial ones, as doing the process wrong may bork your PC. With that in mind, have fun giving your Windows 10 desktop a fresh new face!

How To Create Custom Snap Layouts On Windows 11, 10

On Windows 11, “Snap Layouts” is a feature (part of Snap Assist) that brings a visual aid to snap windows on the screen more efficiently by hovering over the maximize button or dragging a window to the top of the screen. The caveat with this solution is that you can only snap windows with a predefined set of layouts, depending on the size and aspect ratio of the screen.

Since Snap Layouts are limited and you cannot edit the layouts, you will need to use an alternative solution to create custom layouts to snap windows on your computer, which is when “FancyZones” comes in handy.

FancyZones is a tool part of the PowerToys app that allows you to manage windows on Windows 11 and 10. However, unlike Snap Layouts, with FancyZones, you can create custom layouts and access more customization settings that allow you to snap windows exactly the way you like to make you more productive. Although you can use this tool on any display, it is especially useful for large monitors or multi-monitor setups since you can create unique layouts per display.

In this guide, you will learn how to use the FancyZones feature in PowerToys to manage window layouts on Windows 11.

Create custom snap layouts on Windows 11

FancyZones allows you to create layouts to snap windows with pre-defined layout templates, but you can also create custom layouts with the editor. However, you must first install PowerToys on Windows 11 (or Windows 10).

To create custom snap layouts on Windows 11 with FancyZones, use these steps:

Turn on the Enable FancyZones toggle switch (if applicable).

Select the monitor to create the snap layout with FancyZones if you have more than one monitor.

(Optional) Select one of the available layout templates, including Focus, Columns, Rows, Grid, or Priority Grid.

Confirm a name for the layout – for example, My Custom Layout.

Select the layout type. The “Grid” creates horizontal or vertical layouts, and the “Canvas” (recommended) option helps you to create layouts freely.

Position the snap zone in the location you want and resize it like any other window using the mouse.

Repeat steps 9 and 10 to create additional zones depending on the number of windows you want to snap on the screen.

Once you complete the steps, the layout will be set up, and you can start dropping windows on each zone. You would do this by holding down the Shift key, dragging, and dropping the window to its position.

Customize FancyZones settings

The FancyZones tool includes several settings you can customize to control the layouts and windows behaviors. You can adjust these settings to your preferences, but you will get recommendations of the best settings you should consider enabling in the instructions below.

To customize the FancyZones settings for the best snapping experience on Windows 11, use these steps:

Open PowerToys.

Under the “Zone” section, check the “Hold the Shift key to activate zones while dragging” option to snap windows using your custom layouts.

Under the “Window behavior” section, check the following options:

Keep Windows in their zones when the screen resolution changes.

During zone layout changes, windows assigned to a zone will match new size/positions.

Move newly created windows to their last known zone.

Turn on the “Override Windows Snap” toggle switch to use the Windows key + arrow shortcuts to snap windows.

Check the “Move windows between zones across all monitors” option.

Under the “Excluded apps” section, you can specify the name of the app you do not want to snap on zones when using the Snap Assist feature.

After you complete the steps, the windows manager feature will behave according to your settings selection.

How To Install Driver And Optional Updates In Windows 11/10

Windows Update has improved by leaps and bounds the past few years, and it is getting better. The Windows Team is now making it easier for consumers and businesses to locate the driver and optional updates in Windows 11/10.

Microsoft has now made it easier for you to discover the available Windows 11/10 feature updates, monthly non-security quality updates, and driver updates. You will now no longer need to use the Device Manager to search for device driver updates. Consequently, the Device Manager will soon no longer search the internet for available updates. You will be able to use it only if you have the driver update file on your computer.

How to install Driver and Optional Updates in Windows 11

Windows 11 comes with a native feature that lets you check and download updates for device drivers (including the audio driver). You just need to access the Optional Updates menu under the Windows Update category to download and install those updates.

The Settings for Windows Updates have changed a little with Windows 11. Windows Updates has been given a special position in the Windows 11 Settings, and it has a separate menu now.

If you wish to install Driver and Optional Updates in Windows 11, then the procedure is as follows:

In the Settings window, select the Windows Updates tab from the list on the left-hand side.

Under the Additional options menu, you would find Optional updates.

Install Driver and Optional Updates in Windows 10

To check the Driver and Optional Updates available to your Windows 10 system:

Open Settings (Win + I)

Under Driver Updates, a list of updates will be available, which you can choose to install if you are facing an issue manually.

This feature is useful as you can see all the driver updates available for your system here in one place. If you have a specific problem because of an outdated driver; then, you can choose to install it from here.

Microsoft pushes the latest updated drivers automatically to devices via Windows Updates whenever manufacturers release driver updates. Optional Driver updates should normally be installed only if you encounter problems with your devices.

Read: Should I install Optional Quality Updates in Windows?

The Windows Team also shared that this is not a bypass of the automatic driver installation process. Windows Update will automatically keep your drivers updated, but installing optional drivers may help if you are experiencing an issue.

Read: How to manually install a Driver using a .INF File.

Read: How to find, download and install Drivers for Unknown Devices or Hardware.

Why are driver updates mentioned as optional updates when they are necessary?

Driver updates will happen anyway. However, they have a timeline and are relatively slow. Should you face an issue with multiple drivers or aren’t sure which driver is problematic, you would have to update each driver individually. Even more, later versions of Windows might not have that option.

In such a case, Windows 11 allows users to download driver updates pronto using the mentioned option.

Read: Unable to install drivers on Windows

Why are quality and featured updates optional?

Both of them are optional till Windows decides to push them to your system forcibly. Though for quite some time, they are optional. The reason for keeping them in this section is that they use a lot of internet data. Thus, users can download them when they are connected to a network connection with higher bandwidth and cheaper data.

How To Install Pip In Windows To Manage Python Packages

Good to know: see how to run a Java program from Command Prompt.

How to Check Whether pip Is Already Installed on Windows

Before running pip on your Windows device, run a few commands as shown to verify whether pip and Python are already installed as programs on your PC.

Open Command Prompt from Windows Search and run it as an administrator.

Run either of the following two commands to verify Python’s presence on your Windows device:

python

--

help python

--

version

The python --help command will tabulate a list of all available Python arguments to be used on your device.

Type the following in the Command Prompt to check for pip’s availability.

pip help

The pip help command will tabulate a list of commands and general options to be used with the pip script.

If pip was not installed earlier, the code will return the following output: “pip is not recognized as an internal or external command.”

Tip: check out these Python one-liners you should know about.

Prerequisites for Installing pip in Windows

Other than having access to a terminal emulator, such as Command Prompt, there is only one prerequisite before you can install pip in Windows. You just need Python. If it’s not on your PC, you will first have to download and install it.

You can download the latest version of Python from its official website, but it’s much easier using Microsoft Store, where you get Python’s latest stable version for Windows without having to deal with any installer files.

Open Command Prompt in administrator mode.

Type the following without any arguments and hit Enter.

python

Once the process is complete, you will find Python in your list of installed apps.

How to Get Started with pip on Windows

Follow these step-by-step instructions to install pip on your Windows computer and make it usable for Python packages.

1. Download and Install pip

To install the pip package, you will need to first download and set up a bootstrapping script called “get-pip.py.” There are two different ways to complete the download instructions for the script in question.

Tip: learn the differences between Command Prompt and Powershell to know which one to use and when.

Command-Line Installation

Open the Command Prompt in administrator mode.

Assuming Python is installed on your Windows computer, execute its cURL command to bootstrap the “get-pip.py” file from its official URL webpage.

View the above file downloading on your device along with a stream of values for the received data packets.

Use a Python get() request to download the file from its source.

python get

-

pip.py

After Python collects the required packages for pip, wheel, and other scripts, you may see a few warning messages that can be safely ignored.

Upon successful installation of pip, you will see a message that says, “Successfully installed pip [version number] wheel [version number].”

Manual Installation

Apart from the command-line interpreter method, you can install pip manually through its original webpage.

Type %AppData% within the Run command (Win + R), taking you to AppData’s Roaming folder.

Move one level up in the folder tree to access the “Local” subfolder. It contains the Python files under “Microsoft/WindowsApps.” The precise location of this Python subfolder varies from one PC to another.

Save the “get-pip.py” file you downloaded earlier in the same folder as your other Python applications.

Go back to the Command Prompt and use the cd command to change its directory path based on your Python subfolder location.

cd

[

path to Python subfolder and get

-

pip file.

]

Run Python’s bootstrapping script, “get-pip.py,” to install pip on your Windows machine.

python get

-

pip.py

The software is installed once you see a “Successfully installed pip with version number” message – but the job is only half done. There’s still more to do, so keep reading.

FYI: unable to start the Windows troubleshooter? Learn what to do about it.

2. Add pip as an Environment Variable in Windows

You can always run pip from its stored folder tree path, as shown above, but doing it all the time can become tedious and cumbersome. It is much easier to define pip as an environment variable, allowing you to run pip just as easily from any other folders on your device.

Go to the “Advanced” tab in the System Properties window.

You can run pip from any folder path in Windows.

Tip: you can use the Windows Package Manager to install and update software as demonstrated in this guide.

3. Upgrade and Downgrade pip

As with any other software package, pip has to run up to date with your current system. You can easily upgrade or downgrade pip on your device with a few simple commands, as shown below:

Type the following arguments in the code to upgrade pip.

python

-

m pip install

-

U pip

If you already have the latest pip package, you will see a notification that says, “Requirement already satisfied: pip in ‘folder path unique to your system’ with package version number.”

Type the following to downgrade pip:

python

-

m pip install

==

[

older version number

]

The following screen shows pip’s progressive downgrade from version 23.1.2 to 22.0, followed by upgrading it back to the original version.

Using pip to Manage Python Packages in Windows

After you’ve installed pip in Windows, you can readily use it to control and execute a wide variety of Python packages. Let’s check out two important commands that many Python users require frequently:

To install a new package using pip, enter the following information:

pip install

[

name of the package

]

In this example, pip is being used to install Pandas, a complete Python package that performs data analysis on a wide variety of datasets.

Type the following to uninstall a Python package with pip.

pip uninstall

[

name of the package

]

The pandas package is uninstalled with a simple pip command.

There are a few more popular pip commands that you will encounter when dealing with various Python packages:

pip inspect: inspect a Python environment to produce a JSON output

pip search: search for available package information

pip check: check whether there are any broken requirements in the package

pip download: download a package file

pip wheel: build a new project using your current dependencies and requirements

FYI: to learn more about Python’s one-liner commands, check out this useful list.

Frequently Asked Questions How do I uninstall pip from Windows?

Use pip’s own uninstallation command with the syntax pip uninstall pip. This will not uninstall Python from your Windows machine.

Can I install pip offline?

If you’ve previously downloaded the pip packages from its online source, you can install it without connecting to the Internet. You can also install pip on Unix or Mac.

How can I deal with the “pip command not found” error on Windows?

When you encounter a “pip command not found” error in Windows, it means you may have made a mistake while editing the environment PATH variable for the pip command. To remedy this, go to Control Panel and edit the environment variable with correct spelling, and ensure that it points to the same path as your Python subfolder’s location in “AppData.”
