How to Check Whether pip Is Already Installed on Windows

Before running pip on your Windows device, run a few commands as shown to verify whether pip and Python are already installed as programs on your PC.

Open Command Prompt from Windows Search and run it as an administrator.

Run either of the following two commands to verify Python’s presence on your Windows device:

    help python

The python --help command will tabulate a list of all available Python arguments to be used on your device.

Type the following in the Command Prompt to check for pip’s availability.

          pip help

The pip help command will tabulate a list of commands and general options to be used with the pip script.

If pip was not installed earlier, the code will return the following output: “pip is not recognized as an internal or external command.”

Prerequisites for Installing pip in Windows

Other than having access to a terminal emulator, such as Command Prompt, there is only one prerequisite before you can install pip in Windows. You just need Python. If it’s not on your PC, you will first have to download and install it.

You can download the latest version of Python from its official website, but it’s much easier using Microsoft Store, where you get Python’s latest stable version for Windows without having to deal with any installer files.

Open Command Prompt in administrator mode.

Type the following without any arguments and hit Enter.

Once the process is complete, you will find Python in your list of installed apps.

How to Get Started with pip on Windows

Follow these step-by-step instructions to install pip on your Windows computer and make it usable for Python packages.

                  1. Download and Install pip

To install the pip package, you will need to first download and set up a bootstrapping script called “” There are two different ways to complete the download instructions for the script in question.

Tip: learn the differences between Command Prompt and Powershell to know which one to use and when.

                  Command-Line Installation

Open the Command Prompt in administrator mode.

Assuming Python is installed on your Windows computer, execute its cURL command to bootstrap the “” file from its official URL webpage.

View the above file downloading on your device along with a stream of values for the received data packets.

Use a Python get() request to download the file from its source.

                    python get

After Python collects the required packages for pip, wheel, and other scripts, you may see a few warning messages that can be safely ignored.

Upon successful installation of pip, you will see a message that says, “Successfully installed pip [version number] wheel [version number].”

                      Manual Installation

Apart from the command-line interpreter method, you can install pip manually through its original webpage.

Type %AppData% within the Run command (Win + R), taking you to AppData’s Roaming folder.

Move one level up in the folder tree to access the “Local” subfolder. It contains the Python files under “Microsoft/WindowsApps.” The precise location of this Python subfolder varies from one PC to another.

Save the “” file you downloaded earlier in the same folder as your other Python applications.

Go back to the Command Prompt and use the cd command to change its directory path based on your Python subfolder location.

path to Python subfolder and get

                              pip file.

Run Python’s bootstrapping script, “,” to install pip on your Windows machine.

                                python get

The software is installed once you see a “Successfully installed pip with version number” message – but the job is only half done. There’s still more to do, so keep reading.

                                  2. Add pip as an Environment Variable in Windows

You can always run pip from its stored folder tree path, as shown above, but doing it all the time can become tedious and cumbersome. It is much easier to define pip as an environment variable, allowing you to run pip just as easily from any other folders on your device.

Go to the “Advanced” tab in the System Properties window.

You can run pip from any folder path in Windows.

Tip: you can use the Windows Package Manager to install and update software as demonstrated in this guide.

                                            3. Upgrade and Downgrade pip

As with any other software package, pip has to run up to date with your current system. You can easily upgrade or downgrade pip on your device with a few simple commands, as shown below:

Type the following arguments in the code to upgrade pip.

                                            m pip install

                                            U pip

If you already have the latest pip package, you will see a notification that says, “Requirement already satisfied: pip in ‘folder path unique to your system’ with package version number.”

Type the following to downgrade pip:

                                                m pip install

                                                older version number

The following screen shows pip’s progressive downgrade from version 23.1.2 to 22.0, followed by upgrading it back to the original version.

Using pip to Manage Python Packages in Windows

After you’ve installed pip in Windows, you can readily use it to control and execute a wide variety of Python packages. Let’s check out two important commands that many Python users require frequently:

To install a new package using pip, enter the following information:

                                                  pip install

                                                  name of the package

In this example, pip is being used to install Pandas, a complete Python package that performs data analysis on a wide variety of datasets.

Type the following to uninstall a Python package with pip.

                                                      pip uninstall

                                                      name of the package

The pandas package is uninstalled with a simple pip command.

There are a few more popular pip commands that you will encounter when dealing with various Python packages:

pip inspect: inspect a Python environment to produce a JSON output

pip search: search for available package information

pip check: check whether there are any broken requirements in the package

pip download: download a package file

pip wheel: build a new project using your current dependencies and requirements

Frequently Asked Questions How do I uninstall pip from Windows?

Use pip’s own uninstallation command with the syntax pip uninstall pip. This will not uninstall Python from your Windows machine.

                                                        Can I install pip offline?

If you’ve previously downloaded the pip packages from its online source, you can install it without connecting to the Internet. You can also install pip on Unix or Mac.

How can I deal with the “pip command not found” error on Windows?

When you encounter a “pip command not found” error in Windows, it means you may have made a mistake while editing the environment PATH variable for the pip command. To remedy this, go to Control Panel and edit the environment variable with correct spelling, and ensure that it points to the same path as your Python subfolder’s location in “AppData.”

                                                        What is pip?

Pip is a package management system for installing and managing software packages written in Python. It stands for Pip Installs Packages or Pip Installs Python. Pip is the standard package installer for Python and is widely used in the Python community.

Here are some of the main functions of pip:

Pip lets you easily install Python packages from the Python Package Index (PyPI) or other sources.

It automatically resolves and installs the dependencies required by a package.

Pip enables you to manage installed packages, including upgrading, downgrading, or uninstalling them.

You can search PyPI to discover available Python packages and their versions.

It helps you manage package versions, allowing you to specify the desired version or range of versions for installation.

Pip provides tools for packaging and distributing Python packages, making it easier to share your own code with others.

It integrates well with virtual environments, allowing you to isolate and manage dependencies for different projects.

Pip can be used to upgrade its own version to the latest release.

                                                        What does pip uninstall do?

As its name says, pip uninstall is in charge of uninstalling Python packages. However, it can’t remove the following:

Pure distutils packages that leave no metadata

                                                        Script wrappers

How can I pip uninstall all packages in Windows? 1. Uninstall the individual package

Press the Windows button, type Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator to open it.

Type the following and press Enter to know the list of packages installed: pip list

Then, type this and press Enter: pip uninstall package_name

Using the command above will uninstall the particular package name entered. Note: substitute the package name with the individual package you want to remove.

You can read our guide about how to fix Command Prompt not working on your PC.

Adding the pip freeze command will remove all packages installed on your system by pip.

                                                        3. Remove all packages using use xargs

You can only individually remove packages installed from VCS (version control systems). Thus, you will have to exclude them before the command can run.

How To Install Custom Themes In Windows 10

Windows 10 is a versatile platform when it comes to customization. One of the best (or at least most visually striking) examples of this is in the huge variety of alternative themes you can apply to it, capable of changing that flat W10 desktop into something different entirely.

Whether you want to stick to the safety of Microsoft’s official online theme collection, or peruse some of the incredibly creative Windows 10 themes at DeviantArt, we’ll show you how to install custom Windows 10 themes, along with all the necessary precautions.

Once you learn how to install your own themes, make sure to check out our list of the best Windows 10 themes.

                                                        Microsoft and Non-Microsoft Themes

Themes can be found in a few places. Microsoft actually makes quite a few available from their own website. However, the most interesting themes are available on sites like DeviantArt where independent designers create their own packs.

Non-Microsoft themes can’t be installed by default, however. We’ll first need to loosen Microsoft’s restrictions on theme installations.

                                                        How to Install Microsoft Themes

If you want to install one of Microsoft’s themes, it’s very straightforward.

                                                        1. Download the desired theme from the Microsoft website.

Here you can select a new theme from the pane on the left or make your own adjustments to the existing one – like changing the font style, background and colors. How to Install Non-Microsoft Themes

                                                        1. Make a backup! Using a theme that doesn’t match can nuke your system, and there’s a non-negligible chance of that happening. A restore point is good, but an image backup is even better.

                                                        2. Download and install UltraUXThemePatcher (no longer available).

                                                        3. Find themes on websites like DeviantArt.

                                                        4. Copy theme files into “C:/Windows/Resources/Themes.” If the file contains themes for multiple builds of Windows 10, make sure you’re using the right one. You can find your build by pressing Win + R and typing winver into the command line.

It’s not too complicated to install new Windows 10 themes, though you need to be careful with the unofficial ones, as doing the process wrong may bork your PC. With that in mind, have fun giving your Windows 10 desktop a fresh new face!

Using Rufus is another helpful method to install Windows 11 without any previous data and settings. You can use this software to create a bootable installation media and clean install Windows 11. It’s pretty easy to make bootable installation media with Rufus, and the mentioned steps demonstrate the same.

How To Use Microsoft Store To Manage Windows Apps And Games

Microsoft Store, earlier known as the Windows Store, is a centralized place from where consumers can download Apps and Games. While you can always download software outside Microsoft’s digital Store, there are a lot of them available in the Store. In this post, we have written our Quick Start Guide for Windows Store to help you get started.

How to use Microsoft Store in Windows 11/10

The primary reason why Windows Store was renamed to Microsoft Store because it’s just about software any more. Microsoft also lists Hardware and Accessories, but it could be limited based on the country. Here is the list of topics we will cover in this post:

Add/Remove Microsoft Account to Microsoft Store

Install an application or game from the Microsoft Store

Payment, Store Settings and My Library, and more

Finding installed Apps and Managing them

When you launch the Store, the top menu displays popular categories such as Gaming, Entertainment, Productivity, and Deals. Under Home, you have a carousel displaying popular apps and games. Followed by it, you have Top Apps, Featured, Top Games, and Collections. As you keep using the Store, you will also receive personalized suggestions under the “Picks for you” section, top free apps, and so on.

1] Add/Remove Microsoft Account to Microsoft Store

The first thing you should know is that to use the Store, you need to use a Microsoft account. If you have created a Windows account that is linked with a Microsoft account, then you will be signed in using that account. If you want to use another account, you can always sign out and add a different Microsoft account.

That said, Microsoft store allows you to add multiple accounts as well. It can be your work or school account. If there is an app available on the Store which only works with your corporate or school account, then you can add them here, and then install the app.

2] How to install an application or game from the Microsoft Store

Type the app name and press the Enter key. You should see the app suggestion as you type.

The search result will be categorized into Apps, Games, Xbox related items, etc.

If you notice, there are two important filters available

Department or Category such as Apps, Games, Movies, TV Shows, Membership and Avatar Items

                                                        Available on PC/Xbox/HoloLens/Mobile

Later you can checkout and install them in bulk.

If its paid application, you can make the payment during checkout.

Once installed, all the applications will be available in the Start Menu.

3] Payment, Store Settings and My Library, and more.

The settings menu gives you access to some of the essential features such as the option to disable automatic updates, live tile settings, video autoplay, offline permissions, and the most important is to ask for the password for every purchase. Microsoft often shows suggestions and installs some apps as part of their default installation; we suggest you turn it off to stop installing unwanted apps.

4] Finding installed Apps and Managing them

Microsoft keeps evolving Microsoft Store with every update. It is possible that the options might change a bit with time. While we plan to keep it updated if you see anything which is worth a change, let us know.

I hope the Quick Start Guide for Microsoft Store is helpful to you.

How To Manage Your Microsoft To

Do you use Microsoft’s To-Do to manage your tasks on your smartphone and Windows laptop. Would you like to do the same on your primary Linux desktop? With Ao, you can! Let’s see how you can manage your Microsoft To-Do from your Linux desktop.

Ao is available on multiple platforms. If you are on Linux, the easiest way to get the latest version is by using snap:

It’s worth noting that in Ubuntu comes with snap support baked-in by default, and you can find Ao’s snap in Ubuntu Software among the other “Productivity” apps.

If you aren’t fond of Snapcraft (here’s how to install Snapcraft if you disagree) and are using an Arch, Red Hat, or Debian compatible distribution or prefer AppImage, you can find packages of Ao at GitHub. After downloading the package for your distribution, install it like you would any other package. For example, on Debian, you would have to enter in a terminal something like:

At Ao’s Github page you will also find versions for Mac and Windows. We don’t know how many people would prefer it over Microsoft’s official app that is natively available on both platforms, especially since Ao doesn’t radically change or upgrade its features.

Ao is a wrapper for Microsoft’s online version of To-Do. To use it, you have to be online and have an Outlook or Skype account. The first thing Ao will do after running is to ask for those login credentials. We won’t go through registering for Microsoft’s services and will skip to the app itself.

                                                        Like the Real Thing

Microsoft’s To-Do works in Ao in precisely the same way you’d expect from the web application simply because it is the web application.

On the left, you have a sidebar with all your task categories. At the top, you can see some predefined categories that help to better manage your tasks.

In Important, you will find all the tasks you have assigned a star to.

In Planned, all tasks with a date.

Assigned to you contains all tasks someone else has assigned to you, allowing you to share task lists.

In Flagged email, you will find all emails from your Outlook inbox that you marked with a flag.

Tasks acts as the home for all entries that you haven’t assigned elsewhere.

                                                        Managing Tasks and Lists

To add tasks to another list, select it and repeat the process.

The first option, “Add step,” allows you to add subtasks to your task, turning it into a mini-project. The second one, “Add to My Day,” adds the task to To-Do’s special “My Day” list that contains all active tasks of the day.

The rest of the options allow you to add a reminder, due date, select if (and when) the selected task will repeat, assign it a color/tag/category, add a file, or a note.

To move tasks from one list to another, you can “drag and drop” them with your mouse.

Finally, to create new lists, note the option with precisely that name at the bottom of the left category panel.

                                                        Desktop Power

With Ao, you can use shortcuts to create new lists, move between them, add, edit, mark as complete, or delete tasks. The predefined important categories have their own shortcuts, allowing you to jump directly to them.

The following is a list of the shortcuts we found most useful while using Ao:

Jump To: My Day – Ctrl + M

                                                        Jump To: Important – Ctrl + I

                                                        Hide Completed To-dos – Ctrl + Shift + H

As you can see, it is easy to manage your Microsoft To-Do in Linux, but if you are looking for a similar to-do app for macOS/iOS, the default Reminders app is a very useful to-do app. Here is how you can make good use of the Reminders app in Mac.
