Not a new option, but certainly one worth mentioning is creating custom app icons for your Home Screen. Maybe you’re not fond of the icons for specific apps or perhaps you simply want to use images of your own. With the Shortcuts app and the images you want to use, here’s how to personalize your iPhone Home Screen with custom app icons.

If you want to replicate something like the image above, you’ll probably want to download a nice icons pack. These have existed for years but they’re receiving renewed interest since the launch of iOS 14. Search for iOS icons packs on your favorite search engine or on Twitter, and chances are you’ll find something.
To get you started, here are a few places where you can find icon packs for your Home Screen.
For added pop on your Home Screen, you’ll also want to create custom Home Screen widgets as well.
Create custom app icons with ShortcutsTo add new icons to your Home Screen, you can simply change the icon for the app to one of the built-in Shortcuts options or pick your very own image. We’ll show you how to do both! Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and follow these steps.
1) Tap the My Shortcuts tab at the bottom and then the + sign at the top.
3) In the box that appears, tap Choose and then select the app you want or use the Search at the top to find it.
4) Tap the three dots on the top right.
5) Give your shortcut a name. You can have the name of the app icon different on your Home Screen using the steps below. This step simply names the shortcut in the Shortcuts app.
From this point, the steps can vary. This depends on whether you want to pick an icon or add your own image.
Pick an iconIf you want to select an icon from Shortcuts:
a) Tap the default icon.
b) Choose Glyph and make your pick. Optionally you can select a Color.
c) Tap Add to Home Screen.
Add your own imageIf you want to use your own image:
a) Go straight to Add to Home Screen.
b) Tap the icon below Home Screen Name and Icon.
c) Select Choose File, Choose Photo, or Take Photo and follow the prompts for the option you pick.
6) Give the shortcut for your Home Screen a name and tap Add.
7) Tap Done and then Done again.
With both of the sets of steps above for the type of app icon you want to use, there is a longer version of steps where you tap Next instead of the three dots to create the shortcut. Then from All Shortcuts, tap the three dots for the shortcut and follow the steps above to add it to the Home Screen. This is just another way to create the shortcut to open the app and a longer one at that.
Since using the Shortcuts app is basically a different way to open an app (but with a different icon), there are bound to be downsides.
Another downside is that you will not see any badge icons you’ve enabled for the app. The shortcut you create is only to open the app and does not include this type of feature.
Wrapping it upEven though it looks like a lot of work to create custom app icons, once you do it the first time, the process will seem simple. And it may just have you creating tons of app icons for your Home Screen!

How to change app icons on iOS 14?
Instead of directly changing icon packs that require root-level file system access, we will use Apple’s Shortcuts app that helps you create shortcuts for particular apps that can then be customized in your way. The only downside to this workaround is the fact that the new icon will open Shortcuts first and then the app that you linked to it. This might be a dealbreaker for some users but it is currently the only way to customize icons on an iOS device.

Things you will need

Procedure
Download the Shortcuts app on your iOS device and launch the app.
Now tap on the ‘+’ in the top right corner of your screen.
Tap on ‘Add action’.
Now search for ‘Open app’ in the search bar.
Scroll down and tap on ‘Open App’ under the Actions section.
The action will now be added to your new shortcut. Tap on ‘Choose’ as shown below.
You will now get a list of all the apps installed on your device. Find the app you wish to change the icon for and tap on it to select it. For this example, we will be using Filmic Pro.
Once the app has been added to the shortcut action, tap on the ‘3-dot’ menu icon in the top right corner.
Now add a name for your shortcut. This name will only be used to identify the action in the Shortcuts app so you can customize the name to your liking.
Now tap on ‘Add to Home Screen’.
Enter the name for your home screen icon under ‘Home Screen Name and Icon’. We recommend you use the official app name if you are going for the official look.
Now that you have entered the name, tap on the icon beside the text field.
Tap on ‘Choose Photo’.
Now choose the photo that you wish to use as your app icon from your photo library. Tap on it to choose it.
You will now get the option to crop your icon. Select the desired dimensions based on your preference and once you are done, tap on ‘Choose’ in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Finally, tap on ‘Add’ at the top right corner of your screen.
Once the app is added to your home screen, tap on ‘Done’ in the top right corner again.
Now go to your home screen and you should have the new App icon available on your home screen.
Tap the icon to launch the app and the app you chose should now be open.

What to do with the original app icon on the home screen?
You can remove the app icon from your home screen and move it to the app library. This way it will be hidden away and be only visible alongside the shortcut you created only while using the spotlight search. Let’s take a look at the procedure.
Find the original icon on your home screen. Now tap and hold/ force touch on the icon depending on your device.
Now tap on ‘Remove App’.
Select ‘Move to App Library’.
And that’s it, the app should now be moved to your App library and should no longer be visible on your home screen.
Can you avoid opening Shortcuts app every time you tap on Shortcut?
While you CANNOT ignore the Shortcut app upon tapping on a shortcut, you can, however, speed up the process by follow the method below.
How to fasten opening of an app via Shortcuts
You can fasten the opening of apps via Shortcuts by reducing the app animation and transition effects which Apple neatly allows you to do through the ‘Reduce Motion’ option inside iOS. When you enable ‘Reduce Motion’, all motion effects like animation, parallax effect, and screen transitions will be turned off which will result in faster launching of apps on a regular basis and will also speed up app launches via Shortcuts.
This should make app animations and app launches faster but for best results, we also recommend that you enable the ‘Prefer Cross-Fade Transitions’ option after enabling ‘Reduce Motion’.
How to remove an app shortcut from the home screen
If you don’t wish to keep the shortcut that you made, you can remove it from your home screen by long-pressing on the shortcut icon and then selecting the ‘Delete Bookmark’ option that pops up on the screen. This will remove the shortcut from your home screen but the created shortcut will still show up inside the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
How to delete a shortcut entirely
Now that you know that removing a shortcut from the home screen doesn’t delete it from the Shortcuts app, there’s still a way to delete it entirely.
To do this, you need to open the Shortcuts app and tap on the ‘Select’ option available at the top right corner of the screen. Now, select the shortcut you wish to delete (in this case, the one labeled Backdrops Shortcut) and then tap on ‘Delete’ at the bottom right. You will need to confirm this action by tapping on the ‘Delete Shortcut’ option from the dialog that appears below.
There you go! The shortcut that you created using the Shortcuts app has been deleted from the app and you can’t access it again.

Hswidgets Is A Beautiful And Free Way To Add Widgets To Your Home Screen
The iPhone is still one of the only mainstream smartphones on the market today that doesn’t offer a way to place widgets directly beside your Home Screen icons. Most Android handsets can already do this, and from what we can gather, Apple may be working on something similar to this for iOS 14. Unfortunately for those on vanilla iOS 13 and earlier, swiping over to the Today page is as close as you’re going to get to this experience.
Fortunately for jailbreakers, these silly boundaries are easy to break. A brand new and free jailbreak tweak called HSWidgets by iOS developer DGh0st lets users inject all sorts of widgets directly into the Home Screen interface, effectively having them ‘snap’ into place alongside the bevy of app icons that you might already have.
HSWidgets supports all of your existing Today widgets, including those preinstalled by Apple and those added to your device after installing third-party apps that support them, however it also includes custom widgets made to work specifically for HSWidgets, and they’re configurable by the end user.
In the screenshot examples above, you’ll see just a few examples of some of the widget choices HSWidgets brings to the table. On the far-left is a Lock Screen-style date and time display. In the center is a widget that grabs a random photo from your Camera Roll to display, and on the far-right is an example of the Stocks Today widget being displayed.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. All of HSWidgets’ custom widgets can be resized to take up more or less space on the Home Screen. By entering Home Screen editing mode, you’ll reveal special buttons on the widget, such as a Settings button to configure the widget’s behavior and a Resizing button to change how many spaces the widget takes up on the Home Screen:
You’ll see that the date and time widget provides settings for its alignment and for resetting everything to the default values. As you might come to expect, each widget has its own options tailored for its needs.
HSWidgets also includes an option to add blank icon spaces to your Home Screen. Those blank icon spaces appear as little widgets while in Home Screen editing mode, but when you return to normal Home Screen mode, you will see blank spaces between your app icons where you’ve placed them. These are great for creating custom Home Screen layouts to add emphasis to your wallpaper:
As for using HSWidgets, there aren’t really any options to configure. Instead, you just enter Home Screen editing mode, tap on any of the blank spaces indicated by outlined squares, and choose a widget that you want to add. From there, you can configure any of that widget’s properties and place it on the Home Screen:
All widgets added to the Home Screen with HSWidgets can be moved around just like app icons, and so they’ll ‘snap’ into place without giving the Home Screen a dirty appearance.
We think HSWidgets is a really nifty add-on for jailbroken iOS 13 devices, and it seems that the developer will be adding more widgets to the tweak in the future based on user requests.
