Working with large numbers of smaller influencers is a logistical challenge, and requires the right set of tools

How would you like to recruit an army of influential people — each with hundreds or even thousands of loyal followers — to promote your brand?

If this sounds good to you, then you understand the rising popularity of micro-influencer marketing. Micro-influencers can sway opinions, there are millions of them, and many are already eager to work with brands. In fact, you likely already have micro-influencers among your brand’s customer and fan base.

Ready? Not so fast. In order to get results with micro-influencer marketing, you need to scale your campaign across hundreds, even thousands of influencers (depending on your needs). These are real people, not ad units, and there’s no simple way to automate the process of getting these individual influencers to promote you, let alone handle logistics like negotiation, content creation, and payments. You’ll need to understand the complex ecosystem of influencer marketing tools, services, and techniques to achieve ROI in your micro-influencer campaign.

Micro-influencers are loosely defined as bloggers or social media influencers with 100,000 followers or fewer. Studies have found that these smaller influencers have greater engagement, loyalty, and sway with their audiences than the big-name celebrity influencers. However, to achieve scale in your marketing campaign, you need to work with a large number of these folks, which presents some logistical challenges, such as:

Finding the right influencers

Contacting them (and getting responses)

Negotiating terms

Manage the content development process

Paying influencers

Following up

Tracking success

Scaling an influencer marketing campaign requires solid planning, great communication, and a smart combination of the right tools.

First, determine your needs

This may seem obvious, but I’m surprised how often I’ve seen marketers dive into influencer marketing without fully outlining their needs.

What are your marketing goals?

One common trap that marketers fall into is to jump into an influencer campaign without fully thinking through their marketing objectives. For example, some marketers assume that once they convince a few popular Instagrammers to post images of their product, the sales will start rolling in. Quite the contrary. Instagram promotion can work for some categories such as fashion or travel, but can fall flat for other categories.

As a first step, determine what outcome you’d like to achieve from your influencer campaign. What do you want?

Build awareness?

Drive sales?

Email signups?

Increase your social media followers?

Get reviews?

Unboxing videos?

SEO links?

Stunning imagery?

What platforms and formats are you targeting?

Based on your goals, you can then determine which platforms and formats you’d like to target for your campaign. Keep in mind that the end goal of any influencer marketing campaign is the creation of some form of content. It can be a YouTube video, an Instagram post, a pin on Pinterest, a Tweet, or a blog post.

Who is your target influencer?

Once you have an idea of the content you’d like to create, and which platforms are a best fit for your brand, then you can begin to define the right influencer for your campaign.

How many followers?

What do they talk about?

On which platform(s) do they drive engagement?

Audience characteristics. Age, gender, location of their followers should match your target customers.

Now that you’ve outlined your goals and your target influencer, the hard part begins of actually finding these influencers and convincing them to promote your brand. Broadly speaking, you have three major options for doing this, 1) tap into an influencer marketplace, 2) build your own database (DIY approach), and 3) partner with a full service influencer marketing service. There are pros and cons to each, and a wide range of influencer marketing tools to help, and based on my 3+ years of running influencer marketing campaigns, I’ve laid out some of the best options for you here.

Connect with influencers by tapping into an influencer marketplace

When it comes to contacting influencers, you can either contact them directly or via a marketplace. Direct contact requires you to build a list of influencers and reach out to them directly, usually via email. Marketplaces offer you an existing directory of pre-qualified influencers which you can browse or search, or some will even match you up with influencers based on best fit criteria.

The upsides of using a marketplace are speed and efficiency. You can skip the time-consuming steps of building a list of influencers, finding their contact information, and communicating with each one separately. Plus each marketplace will typically have certain parameters for their influencers, such as YouTubers, or influencers within particular categories, which can speed your search process.

Famebit is the most popular marketplace for reaching YouTube influencers. Famebit has over 70,000 influencers in its marketplace, and has the added cachet of actually being owned by YouTube (Google acquired it in 2023).

On Famebit, you simply list your campaign, select the types of influencers you want to work with, and then you can either invite influencers or influencers will apply to promote your product. Famebit charges 20% of the fee paid to the influencer.

Octoly is another popular YouTube marketplace. Similar to Famebit, you can list your product and campaign in Octoly’s marketplace and either receive applications or invite YouTubers to promote you.

Octoly’s unique aspect is that brands cannot provide monetary compensation to influencers, their system works around free product samples only. This may work for smaller YouTubers, but larger influencers will typically require a fee so may not be listed on Octoly.

Influenster is a very popular shopping community site which caters to small influencers who like to review products. They have 3 million influencers on their platform who post product reviews on the Influenster website.

As a brand, you can submit your product to be included in one of their “VoxBoxes” which are boxes of free product samples they ship out to their influencers.

This is an easy way to get your product in front of small influencers and regular shoppers who will review your product and mention it on social media. Influenster has a strong community of beauty influencers, as well as lots of influencers who talk about food and cooking, home and health products.

Build your own database of influencers

The downside of listing in a marketplace is that you may be limited in the customizability of your campaigns. Marketplaces set their own parameters around what types of influencers they list and the types of campaigns that can be run. Either you’ll be limited to influencers on a specific platform such as YouTube or Instagram, or you’ll be limited to certain review formats.

If you need greater customizability in your campaigns, you’ll need to create your own database of influencers and handle outreach on your own. Luckily, there are a wide range of tools to assist you with this too.

How to find influencers

One of the most common ways to discover influencers through the content that they create. Depending on your target media or platform, just search for content that’s similar to the content you’d like to create (reviews, unboxings, imagery)

If you’re targeting YouTube reviews, then a great place to start is to search YouTube for reviews of products similar to yours, and build your list based on who is creating great content. Likewise for Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, or Google for bloggers. You can start by searching on each platform for content you like.

You can also use one of the many influencer search tools available. These tools are designed to help you search through content and lists of influencers to speed up the process of locating influencers.

Buzzsumo is probably the most popular tool for searching for influencers. You can search for content.

Buzzsumo will show you content relating to your keyword that has the greatest visibility in terms of social shares or linking sites. You can target either the author of the content or the people who shared it on Twitter.

You can also search directly for influencers by keyword:

Buzzsumo will show you key statistics like blog authority and Twitter followers. You can add influencers to lists to follow up with later.

Another useful tool is Ahrefs. While this is primarily an SEO-focused service, Ahrefs has a very nice content discovery tool called Content Explorer which is similar to Buzzsumo’s content search feature.

Ahrefs includes some powerful filtering options – you can filter by publication date to find only recent posts, or even by word count, say if you’re looking for in-depth content only.

Buzzstream (which we’ll discuss again below) is one of the most popular CRM tools for managing communications with influencers. However, they recently launched an influencer discovery service called Buzzstream Discovery which is another great way to find influencers.

Discovery works similar to the influencer search feature of Buzzsumo, where you search directly for influencers by keyword. Buzzstream Discovery has great coverage of influencers and provides very useful stats on each influencer’s level of engagement and activity.

How to contact influencers at scale

Once you’ve developed your list of influencers to target, you’ll need to get in contact with them. Typically the best way to do this is via email. If they have a blog, you can usually find the contact information there. Otherwise, you can try messaging them on the various social platforms, but typically you’ll have the best luck with email.

However, if your list is large, say hundreds or even thousands of influencers, you’ll need some tools to automate this process.

Buzzstream is best known for its excellent Outreach service. Buzzstream Outreach is a full CRM system designed primarily for blogger outreach, but over time it has evolved to be a capable influencer outreach system.

On Buzzstream you can create Projects which act like folders to contain all your contacts for a given campaign. These contacts can include bloggers or social media influencers.

You can either add influencers through Buzzstream’s Discovery service (mentioned above) or you can upload your own list. Once you add contacts, Buzzstream will automatically crawl the web for contact information for anyone you add to your project.

Once a contact is loaded to your Buzzstream project, you can access their profile and email them directly from Buzzstream.

You can also email them from another email client, and as long as you connect your email server to Buzzstream, all communications will be tracked in one place. This is a great way to collaborate across team members in case multiple people are contacting influencers in your project.

Gmail and Google Sheets with Extensions

Of course, sometimes the old fashioned way is the best way. Gmail plus Google Sheets is a simple but very effective way to manage a large outreach campaign.

There are some great browser extensions you can install for Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox which can aid in finding contact information for large numbers of websites.


Hunter is a very popular extension which will automatically find contact email addresses for any site you visit.

Buzzstream buzzmaker

Buzzstream makes an extension called the Buzzmarker which will not only find contact email addresses but will streamline your entire process by automatically navigating you to all the sites in a given project, while it picks up contact information for each one, which you then manually approve as you go.

Gmass Full service influencer platforms

Tomoson is a popular full service influencer marketing platform. On Tomoson, you can define your campaign needs, and through the platform you can connect with influencers to promote your campaign.

Tomoson’s network includes micro-influencers on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and bloggers, and they support sponsored content features, unboxing videos, and social mentions.

Tomoson’s platform helps you manage all your communications with influencers and aids with processes such as tracking packages for product samples.

BrandBacker is another full service influencer marketing platform which helps you connect with influencers. Brandbacker connects you with their network of influencers and offer agency-type services to help you craft your campaign and find the right influencers to promote it. Brandbacker also provides mention-tracking services, so you can monitor mentions of your brand and content created about your brand across social channels.

The big picture

The challenge of running a micro-influencer marketing campaign is that you’ll need to coordinate with a large number of influencers. Finding, contacting, negotiating with, monitoring, and reviewing content created for a campaign can be a logistical nightmare.

Influencer marketplaces are a great place to start if you’re looking for a relatively simple promotion such as YouTube reviews or Instagram posts.

If your needs are more complex, or you know you’re looking for a specific type of influencer, you’ll need to build your own database of influencers and contact them yourself. To scale a self-managed influencer outreach project, you’ll want to use outreach tools such as Buzzsumo, Buzzstream, and Ahrefs to speed up the discovery and contact processes. You can also utilize some simple extensions for Chrome and Gmail to make this process more efficient.

Finally, if you’re comfortable making a commitment to a single vendor, full service influencer marketing platforms can help you with the heavy lifting of contacting and coordinating with influencers, while providing you with useful campaign performance analytics as well.

5 Ways to Increase Your Conversion Rates with Micro-Influencers

Does size really matter? When it comes to influencer marketing it does, but not in the way you think. Influencers with a smaller following tend to have a much bigger impact on conversions.

They’re called micro-influencers. And although they have fewer followers than top influencers and celebrities, their reach extends to a highly-relevant, targeted audience that is more likely to buy your product.

In this post, you’ll learn all about micro-influencers, and how you can work with them to boost your conversions.

A Closer Look at Micro-Influencers

Micro-influencers, as their name suggests, are influencers who have a relatively small following compared to other influencers. There is no exact number of followers to define these influencers, but some general qualities can be outlined.

According to Mavrck, they are “everyday consumers” with a following size of 500-5,000 people. Based on this definition, micro-influencers are like regular people, just with a slightly larger than average audience.

AdAge, however, defines micro-influencers as individuals with anywhere between 10,000 and 90,000 followers. And Mediakix categorizes influencers with less than 100,000 followers as micro-influencers.

According to these three definitions, micro-influencers are individuals who have anywhere between 500 and 100,000 followers.

How to Work with Micro-Influencers for Increased Conversions

Despite Mavrck’s definition, many micro-influencers aren’t just regular people, or everyday consumers. Many of them are subject matter experts, and the people who tune in to their updates are interested in those specific subjects.

Their opinions and recommendations on the specific subjects they specialize in are considered trustworthy, and often result in higher conversion rates. Here are five ideas to help you harness the power of micro-influencers to drive conversions:

#1: Turn Micro-Influencers into Loyal Fans

When a micro-influencer truly loves the product they’re promoting, it shows in the content they create. Their positive reviews are seen as more authentic, which in turn can convince their audiences to try out the product.

This is what worked so well for Koa Organic Beverages, according to a case study conducted by HYPR. Koa is a brand of organic beverages that contain organic minerals, antioxidants, vitamins, and electrolytes present in fruit. It doesn’t contain any preservatives or additives, making them perfect for health-conscious consumers.

The brand launched an influencer marketing campaign with a community of seven yoga influencers who specialize in health, fitness, and valued organic products. The goal was to create brand awareness among an audience that’s interested in health and fitness. At the time of the campaign, each of the influencers had no more than 100,000 followers, putting them in the micro-influencer category.

Koa sent out samples of their products to these influencers, who then turned into huge fans. The product fit with their subject matter specialization, which helped the brand connect with a highly relevant audience. Yoga influencers like Andrea Taylor (@move_yo_asana) featured images of the products in their content, and promoted its benefits in their captions.

Through the campaign, Koa reached almost 500,000 individuals, and generated more than 10,200 likes. And they do so without having to spend anything extra, proving the cost-effectiveness of micro-influencers. All they did was choose relevant influencers whom they thought might appreciate their products, and then sent those influencers their products for free.

#2: Have Micro-Influencers Promote Discount Codes or Links

Having a micro-influencer promote your product will ideally stir the interest of your target consumers. But in some cases, those consumers may need an extra nudge to get them to take action. When they see someone they admire raving about a product, they might check it out, but fail to take the final step of making a purchase.

To further improve your chances of converting those consumers into customers, you can give them something that will compel reciprocity. Perhaps have the influencers promote unique discount codes, so that their followers receive a special price on their first purchase. Or have them promote a link for a free trial of your service.

For example, Supursestyle promoted a unique discount code through style and fashion influencers like Lauren Recchia (@northofmanhattan), who has about 56,000 Instagram followers.

Supursestyle is a service through which customers purchase authentic designer handbags. They chose to work with relevant micro-influencers to reach their target consumers who are interested in designer clothing.

As you can see in the screenshot above, Lauren talked about how she used her “favorite new service,” and mentioned the name of the service. She encouraged her followers to check out the website, or the Instagram profile of the service. She then included a special 15% discount code so her followers were rewarded with a discount if they took the desired action.

When using this type of promotion, you can set up a payment contract where the influencer earns a percentage, or a small sum for each conversion they help to generate. You can track their conversions by using a unique URL or discount code that matches each influencer’s name or social media handle. This can effectively help you track your conversions while ensuring that your campaign is yielding the desired results.

#3: Have Micro-Influencers Create Tutorials and Guides

Before people decide to buy your product, they may want to have a better understanding of how it works. It may not be enough to simply have the influencer feature your product in their content. Sometimes, you need to show the product in action to inspire people.

According to a study funded by Experticity, people consider micro-influencers to be better than regular people at explaining how a product works. So have micro-influencers create tutorials or guides for your product. When people see exactly how the product works or is used, it may compel them to buy it and try it out for themselves.

As seen in the screenshot above, food influencer Samantha Hillman (@_samhillman), who has about 27,400 followers, created her own recipe using Quaker Oats. The idea was to instill in the audience a desire to try the product, so she provided them with an easy-to-follow recipe that encouraged her followers to test the product themselves.

In addition to Instagram posts, bloggers provided readers with recipes involving Quaker Oats. Bloggers like Lily Kunin, of Clean Food Dirty City, created a unique recipe using the oats and provided detailed instructions for her readers to recreate the dish.#4: Invite Micro-Influencers to Sneak Peek Events

One of the best ways to promote your products is through launch events. And one of the most effective ways to get influencers to promote your product is to provide them with exclusive previews. You can combine the two; when launching a new product, invite micro-influencers to a sneak peek event.

During the event, you can provide them with an exclusive preview or demonstration of the product. You can even provide them with free samples as a method of payment. They can then share their experiences at the event with their social media followers, at the same time creating product awareness.

Another HYPR case study highlighted how PAX Labs promoted the launch of their new products by inviting influencers to a sneak peek event. They held two events – one in Los Angeles and another in New York – where they invited a combination of micro-influencers and regular influencers for an exclusive preview.

All 18 influencers who were invited to the event showed up. They created 21 posts without any extra compensation, and reached more than 1.6 million people. Their posts generated a total of 30,746 likes as of October 2023.

#5: Have Micro-Influencers Review Your Product

The previously-cited Experticity study found that 82% of consumers would make a purchase decision based on the recommendations of a micro-influencer. This suggests that what a micro-influencer says about your product can have a huge impact on whether or not people buy it.

Have micro-influencers honestly review your product to win the trust of your target audience. You can send some them samples of your product, or invite them to try your service for free. Let them know that all you need in return is for them to share their genuine opinion about the experience. Consumers can easily see through reviews that are too promotional, but micro-influencers are known for their authenticity.

When the review is authentic, you stand a better chance of winning over a new audience. You can even encourage the influencers to mention any negatives about your product/service they find. This will help reinforce the positive things they say as honest and genuine, which will improve your chances of driving conversions.

Trendy Butler used this tactic by sending out one of their boxes for free to men’s fashion YouTuber, The Kavalier, who has around 6,500 subscribers. The YouTuber created an unboxing video in which he reviewed their service, and provided his viewers with his honest opinion about it.

He did not hesitate to mention how the chinos he received in the box seemed a bit thin before he tried them on, and how the shirt didn’t fit too well. He also talked about how the pants fit him surprisingly well, despite them being slightly too short.

The video included thorough coverage of the various benefits of the subscription service. He briefly compared the service with another men’s fashion subscription service, and listed some of reasons why he liked Trendy Butler more. The Youtuber also included a disclaimer in the description which stated that, although Trendy Butler sent him the box for free, the video wasn’t sponsored, and there were no editorial strings attached.

What worked here is the fact that although the service sent the influencer free items, they encouraged him to share his honest opinion. They did not pay him anything extra, or try to control what he wanted to say about their service, which made the review authentic and believable.

It’s really easy to activate and connect your phone to the Wavefun Micro Mini Earbud the first time you receive its package. Just turn it on by pressing continuously the first (protruding) button until the notification LED in the middle pulses in red-blue color – indicating that it’s waiting to pair with your smartphone.

Go to the Bluetooth Settings of your device, locate the WAVEFUN Micro device and select it. That’s all, pairing complete 🙂

In fact I did manage to misplace it for a couple of days, but I finally remembered that I had placed it inside my trouser’s pocket once. And thankfully my wife hadn’t put it yet in the washing machine.

COMFORT & SECURE FIT IN EITHER EAR: It’s ergonomically-designed and in its basic package you will find 3 different sized ear plugs, that ensure a great snug and secure fit in your ear, no matter which one you prefer: left or right. 

It fits exceptionally in the ear. It doesn’t move at all, and you can easily use it while running, walking, cycling or whatever you do that needs excessive body movement. Trust me, as long as you choose the right ear plug, you won’t have any issue with its fit in your ear. 

Very good SOUND quality: It’s excellent for everyday phone calls, with impressive maximum volume, enabling you to use it even in crowded areas, or while you’re in a busy street, or in a room full of people talking. The caller will NOT complain about the clarity of your voice, but you won’t complain either about the volume of each phone call. 

It’s louder than other budget Bluetooth earbuds that are available in the market, providing a decent communication experience for the average user.

You’re gonna love its MAGNETIC USB CHARGER: It’s really easy to charge it using it, just by connecting it to any available USB port: on your PC, laptop, on a power outlet with an adaptor, directly from a power bank etc. 

You only have to place the Earbud close to the hole of its charger and instantly the magnets there will attract it with significant strength, making sure it doesn’t slip. A red indicator light shines when it’s charging and it goes off when charging is complete 😉 It’s that simple.

It takes approximately 1 hour to fully charge it, enabling you to talk for almost 5 hours straight before it needs to be recharged. Alternatively you can keep it in stand by mode for several days (80 hours or so), depending the use of course.

DUAL BUTTONS, for easy Siri/Google Assistant support: Given its REALLY small size, one would think that there would be no space for extra buttons etc. Fortunately this is NOT the case here, as the Wavefun Micro Mini Earbud comes with two buttons: one for the typical answer/end and play /Pause functions and a second to reduce volume and skip songs. 

It’s also compatible with most Smartphone Assistants such as Siri (iOS), Google Assistant (Generic Android), Bixby (Samsung) etc. You can easily activate it by holding the main button for 2 seconds. 

Just make sure you always know where you put it, and that you don’t misplace it (like I did). I know there are several other similar gadgets out there (at the same price range) but all I can say for this specific is that it SURELY is worth its money. 

I enjoyed its battery life, but I used it only for phone calls, not music playback. This means that it was on stand by most of the time, waiting to be activated in case a phone call came through. If you’re in the market for a Bluetooth 4.1 enabled Earbud then don’t miss the opportunity to take a close look on this little gem. You might be surprised 😉

Trend Micro Mobile Security Personal Edition For Android Review

Your smartphone can be a treasure trove of private data, with everything from your bank-account information to your email and social-networking passwords stored inside. To keep that info from being nabbed by a malicious app or a sticky-fingered thief, Trend Micro’s Mobile Security App keeps your personal data under control in a number of ways.

The app is a free download from the Android Market, and it includes a basic malware scanner that checks if your phone or SD card are infected with any malicious software. You can upgrade to the premium version of the app by buying a one-year license (for $30) to gain access to features such as parental controls, the ability to remotely locate your device in case it gets lost, and a fraudulent-website blocker.

The malware scanner updates its definitions either daily, weekly, or monthly (based on the update schedule you select), and it scans each app as it’s installed onto your device. You can also manually scan all the files on your phone, though this can take anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes depending on the number of apps and files you’ve stored on your phone’s internal memory or SD card.

On my relatively empty Droid Bionic, I completed a scan in less than 2 minutes, while my Droid Incredible (which is bursting at the seams with apps) took closer to 19 minutes for a complete scan. Unfortunately, unlike other mobile security suites, Trend Micro’s app has no option to automate the process: Whereas on Lookout you can set the app to scan your phone every day, Trend Micro forces you to manually run the app any time you want to check the status of your phone. The process is simple enough, but I hope an update brings automation to the scanning soon.

If you decide to upgrade to the premium version, I think the extra features are well worth the price.

My favorite premium feature in Trend Micro Mobile Security is the option to block annoying calls and text messages. This option lets you filter calls and texts based on the number, or (in the case of text messages) on certain keywords. If you are someone who suffers from constant calls from unknown numbers, you can create a filter that allows only people in your Address Book or text/call history to contact you. It’s really handy for stopping those irritating telemarketing calls or spam texts.

While the free scanner protects your phone from dangerous apps, the safe-surfing feature in the premium version protects you from dangerous websites. You have three levels of protection to choose from (Low, Normal, High), and you can change the level at any time. I would recommend that users stay on the Normal or High settings, as the Low setting may leave you open to certain phishing attacks.

If you have kids (or employees that you don’t want going to certain sites), you can enable Parental Controls and limit the websites that they can access. In order to enable or remove the parental locks, you’ll need your Trend Micro password (the same one you used to register the app when you first install it). If someone tries to access a blocked site while the controls are in place, they’ll be greeted with a screen telling you that the site was blocked by parental controls.

If you’re always losing your phone, Trend Micro’s ability to remotely locate your smartphone will be a godsend. As with Webroot and Lookout, you use a Web portal to activate the tracking functions of the app. From there, you can locate your phone, have it display a custom message on the screen, make it scream, lock the device, or wipe all the information off of it. You can manage multiple devices from within the portal, but unfortunately you’re going to need to buy a separate license for each one.

In my tests, the locate function was inconsistent. One second, it was able to locate me with no problem, but when I tried locating the phone a second time, the app reported the phone three miles away from its actual location.

Overall, the app gets the job done and will give you the peace of mind that your phone is being protected, even if you don’t think you need it. While the cost of a one-year Trend Micro license may put some people off, the extra security options are worth the $30. At the very least, you should give the free malware scanner a try–it’s better to set up precautions and not have to use them than to be caught without them when you need them most.

Micro Express Microflex 23B: Budget Desktop In Name (And Price) Only

When you think of a budget desktop, what comes to mind? Integrated graphics, very few ports, and an extremely boring case, right? Well the Micro Express MicroFlex 23B does have an extremely boring case, but it’s otherwise a pleasant surprise–with a discrete graphics card and USB ports to spare–considering it’s labeled “budget.”

The MicroFlex 23B costs just $600 (as of 5/26/11), but has some impressive features for the price. Sure, there’s the 3.3GHz Sandy Bridge Intel Core i3-2120 processor, the 4GB of RAM, and the 500GB hard drive, but none of these features are particularly out of the MicroFlex 23B’s price point. However, the Blu-ray drive and the AMD Radeon HD 6670 are nice touches, not to mention the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium and a pair of USB 3.0 ports.

This budget desktop delivers on performance, as well: in PCWorld’s World Bench 6 benchmark tests, the system scored an impressive 141. For comparison’s sake, that’s more than 10 points higher than the Lenovo H320, which currently holds the number one spot on our list of top 10 budget desktops. The Lenovo H320 is about $100 more expensive than the MicroFlex 23B, but it also has an additional 2GB of RAM and Core i5 processor, though it is an older, Clarkdale model.

Though this system is by no means a gaming system, it still manages to blast by other budget PCs in terms of graphics. In our Unreal Tournament 3 tests, the MicroFlex 23B managed a decent 42.6 frames per second (fps), running on highest quality at a screen resolution of 2560 by 1600 pixels. The Lenovo H320 managed an unplayable 16 fps on the same settings, while the HP Pavilion s5660f (our number two budget PC) couldn’t ekes out 11 fps. In fact, the MicroFlex 23B’s frame rates actually put the system within competing distance of our lower-end Mainstream desktops.

The MicroFlex 23B is housed in a rather plain black aluminum chassis–in fact, it’s the same chassis as the MicroFlex 25B. The front of the case is smooth and black and has rounded mesh edges with a few scattered blue lights. There are five expansion bays–one is occupied by the Blu-ray drive–power and reset buttons, a multi-format card reader bay, and a few convenience ports. The front of the computer has a total of three USB ports, microphone and headphone jacks, and a FireWire port.

There are more ports on the back of the system, including two USB 3.0 ports and six additional USB ports. There’s also an SPDIF out, an eSATA port, another FireWire port, Gigabit Ethernet, and support for 5.1 surround sound. There are also two PS/2 ports–one for mouse, and one for keyboard–which is surprising, considering the system ships with USB-wired peripherals. The peripherals are standard and unimpressive: a three-button optical mouse and a flat, moderately quiet keyboard. The Radeon HD 6600 can be hooked up to a display via Display Port, HDMI out (a nice touch), or DVI.

Though the MicroFlex 23B’s exterior might be somewhat of a letdown, its interior is certainly not. This system is totally ready to accept a ton of upgrades. The interior is roomy and uncluttered, with four free 5.25-inch bays, three free 3.5 inch bays, one free PCI slot, two free PCIe x16 slots, and two free PCIe x1 slots (though one is blocked by the graphics card. There are also two free RAM slots.

Software-wise, the MicroFlex 23B is pretty typical. You do get CyberLink Blu-ray disc software and LightScribe disc labeling software (this allows you to burn designs directly on special types of media).

All in all, Micro Express’s MicroFlex 23B is an excellent deal. It’s more than just a solid performer–it out-performed several of our mainstream desktops in our WorldBench 6 tests (not to mention all of our budget desktops). If you’re not too keen on a sexy chassis, there’s no reason not to take a look at the MicroFlex 23B for your basic and beyond basic computing needs.
