Suggested January 2024 How To Send Disappearing Messages In Popular Chat Apps

Disappearing (or vanishing/self-destructing) messages are an increasingly common feature in chat apps, but the option was first popularized by Snapchat, which used to be known as the ephemeral messaging app. In this article, we show you how you can send self-destructing messages and other content through some of the most popular chat apps.

What Are Disappearing Messages?

If you haven’t heard of disappearing messages before, here’s what they’re all about. They are self-destructing texts, pictures, videos, and other content, such as emoji, that gets removed once the recipient has read them. On some chat apps, they are preserved for a predefined amount of time (for instance, seven days on WhatsApp) before being sent into the void. Disappearing messages are an ideal tool for people who are concerned about the privacy of their text conversations.

How to Send Disappearing Messages in WhatsApp

WhatsApp is one of the most recent apps that added the option to send disappearing messages for both individual and group chats.

Enabling Disappearing Messages on Android

1. Select a chat in WhatsApp and tap on the person’s profile picture.

2. Tap the “i” button to get to the person’s info page.

3. Tap on “Disappearing messages.”

4. Under “Message timer” you’ll see several options for how long you want to keep your messages before deleting them. Take your pick and you’re done!

Alternatively, you can tap “Try a default message timer”, then choose how long to keep all new messages in all chats before they self-destruct.

5. A message will appear in your chat notifying the recipient that disappearing messages are now enabled.

Unlike Snapchat, WhatsApp won’t immediately delete messages but will wait seven days. This is the only option available at this point, but more may be added at a later date.

Enabling Disappearing Messages in iOS

1. Open a chat in WhatsApp on your iPhone/iPad.

2. Tap the contact’s name.

3. Scroll down until you find “Disappearing Messages.”

4. Turn the option on.

5. As of the WhatsApp update in late 2023, you’ll see a new section called “Message Timer” appear, which lets you choose how long WhatsApp will wait before automatically deleting messages in that chat. You can also set a default message timer which will be applied across all your messages in all chats.

5. Once you’ve made your selection, you will see a message explaining that the feature has been activated.

How to Send Disappearing Messages in Snapchat

Snapchat is one of the first apps to offer this feature, and actually built its reputation around it. The next steps apply to anyone using Snapchat on an Android or iOS device.

1. Open Snapchat on your device.

2. Tap on Messages at the bottom.

3. Select one of your Chats.

4. Snapchat already deletes messages by default, but if you want to fiddle with the settings a little, tap on the person’s profile icon in the chat window.

6. Select “Delete Chats.”

7. Choose an time when you want your chats deleted: “After Viewing” or “24 Hours After Viewing.” You can switch between them as you prefer.

If you want to hold on to a chat, you can. All you need to do is press and hold that particular chat box. Note that Snapchat also removes messages in groups after 24 hours have passed.

How to Send Vanishing Messages in Facebook Messenger

Users who prefer Messenger also have the option to send self-destructing messages. In this app, however, they are called “Vanishing Messages.” Here’s how you can send ephemeral texts if you’re using Messenger for iOS or Android.

1. Open a chat in the Messenger app.

2. Tap on the person’s profile picture at the top.

3. In the Privacy section, tap on “Vanish mode.”

4. Toggle on the feature.

5. A new window welcoming you to “Vanish mode” and giving you a roundup of features should appear on your display.

6. All vanishing messages can be exchanged in a separate window. Press “OK” to continue and start chatting.

Messenger will delete these texts once the two people having the conversation have viewed all messages and left the chat. Note that group chats, video and audio calls don’t support vanishing messages.

How to Send Disappearing Messages in Instagram

You can’t send disappearing texts in Instagram unless you’ve synced your Instagram DMs with Facebook Messenger. Once you do that, the process of enabling “Vanish mode” should be the same as outlined in the section above.

1. Open a conversation in Instagram.

2. Tap on the blue “Camera” button in the lower left corner.

3. Select the kind of content you want to send. It can be a photo, video, boomerang, etc. You can even type out a text on a colorful background – it’s the closest you can get to sending a disappearing message.

4. Type your text and press Next.

5. At the bottom select “View Once” to have the message self-delete after the other party has opened it. You can also opt to “Allow a Reply” or “Keep in Chat.”

6. Press Send.

How to Send Disappearing Messages in Signal

In Signal you have the option to choose how long you want to keep your ephemeral messages. The privacy-focused chat app is the most generous in this sense. Note that you can set the feature with one-on-one and group chats. Let’s explore how you can turn it on in Android and iOS.

1. Open a chat in Signal.

2. Tap on the person’s profile picture at the top.

3. Tap on “Disappearing messages.”

5. A message should appear in your chat window stating that the disappearing message timer has been set.

How to Send Self-Destructing Messages in Telegram

Telegram doesn’t have a disappearing message feature, per-se, but users of the app can create a safe-messaging space, which will self-destruct after a certain amount of time has passed. The option works only in single chats. Follow the steps to set up a secret conversation in Android and iOS.

1. Open a chat in the Telegram app.

2. Tap on the other person’s profile picture in the upper part of the display.

4. Select “Start Secret Chat.”

5. You’ll be asked whether you really wish to start a secret chat. Press “Start.”

6. A new secret conversation window will open that has a self-destructive timer attached to it.

You can access the self-destruct timer for your messages by tapping on the other person’s profile picture again. The interval ranges from one second to one week in Telegram.

How to Send Disappearing Messages in Viber

Viber is a messaging app that’s quite popular outside the United States. It’s super easy to set disappearing messaging if you’re using it on Android or iOS. The option only works for one-on-one chats.

1. Open a chat in Viber.

2. Look at the bottom of the display and find a bar of icons. Locate and tap on the one that looks like an alarm clock.

3. Select the time interval after which you want these messages to self-destruct.

We should note that there is a rise in privacy-focused chat apps like Signal. If privacy is a top priority for you, you may opt to switch to a more secure app. Many of these apps also have a disappearing message feature, so you won’t be missing out on anything important if you decide to jump ship. We’ve listed some of them below.

Confide (iOS, Android)

Wire (iOS, Android)

Wickr Me (iOS, Android)

Dust (iOS, Android)

Frequently Asked Questions 1. Is the feature available for all messaging apps?

You can’t send disappearing messages with all apps, but the option is being added to more and more chat apps these days. If you want to start sending disappearing messages, check whether your app of choice has them. If not, you can install one of the above.

2. Why can’t I take a screenshot when I am using the feature in certain apps?

Disappearing messages are considered a privacy feature, so apps like Telegram won’t let you screenshot these conversations. That’s not the case for all, though. For example, WhatsApp has no problem allowing you to take a screenshot. Others, like Snapchat, will notify the other party when a screenshot has been taken.

3. Will media files sent in disappearing message chats be deleted?

The depends on the app. For example, WhatsApp will automatically download media files by default. If you have this option enabled, the app will save the content to your phone. Thus, these media files won’t be deleted once the seven days have passed. In other apps, such as Signal, which does not follow this practice, these will be gone for good from the app.

Fitbit Messaging: How To Receive Messages And Send Replies From Your Fitbit

Fitbit’s early smartwatches lacked some “smart” elements like messaging. In 2023, the company addressed this by rolling out messaging capabilities to the original Versa and Ionic. Now, messaging support through quick replies and voice replies comes standard on several Fitbit devices. In this how-to guide, we’ll take you through how to set up messaging on your Fitbit, how the feature works, which devices support it, and more.

Fitbit’s messaging features remain relatively rudimentary but still quite useful. Unlike Wear OS, Fitbit users can’t type out lengthy replies on their devices. The devices lack dedicated keyboards. Instead, Fitbit uses quick replies, letting users swiftly respond to messages through preset text or emojis. Fitbit also supports audio-to-text replies, but only a handful of devices support this feature. You can connect Fitbit to iPhone and Android messaging, which isn’t something we should have to say, but Apple is notorious for not opening certain doors.

Open the Fitbit app on your phone.

Tap your profile image in the top left of the screen.

Select your smartwatch or fitness tracker.

Tap notifications.

On this page, you can select primary apps for text messages, calendar events, and email. You can also choose the individual apps you wish to receive notifications.

Which devices are supported?

Andy Walker / Android Authority

While more modern Fitbits include messaging support, not every device does. For example, Fitbit devices that lack a screen don’t support the feature, while some of Fitbit’s older models don’t pack it either. According to Fitbit’s documentation, the following devices are supported:

Fitbit Sense 2

Fitbit Sense

Fitbit Versa 4

Fitbit Versa 3

Fitbit Versa 2

Fitbit Versa

Fitbit Versa Lite

Fitbit Ionic

Fitbit Inspire 3

Fitbit Luxe

Fitbit Charge 5

Fitbit Charge 4

Fitbit Charge 3

Some older devices, like the Fitbit Charge 2 and Fitbit Surge, can receive text messages but do not support message replies. Fitbit also notes that the feature is only available to devices paired with an Android phone. However, iPhone users can still respond to a limited number of Fitbit app notifications, including “messages, cheers, taunts, and friend requests.”

Tap the notification on your watch. You can also scroll down from the top of the display to access recent notifications.

Tap the text icon (three horizontal lines) to select a quick reply.

Tap the emoji icon to respond with an emoji.

How to use quick replies on the Luxe, Inspire 3, and Charge 5:

Tap the notification on the Luxe. You can also scroll left or right in the notifications app to access recent notifications.

To reply to a message, tap the text icon (three horizontal lines) to select a quick reply.

Tap the emoji icon to respond with an emoji.

How to use quick replies on other Fitbits:

Tap the notification on your device, or swipe down from the top of the screen to see recent notifications.

Tap reply or replies, depending on your device, and select a quick reply.

You can also tap more replies or more emojis to see more options.

If no reply option is available on a particular app, that app doesn’t support quick replies. In addition, if no reply option is visible on your device, your Fitbit does not support messaging features.

Can I edit and customize my quick replies?

Open the Fitbit app on your phone.

Tap your profile image in the top left of the screen.

Select your smartwatch or fitness tracker.

Tap notifications.

Tap quick replies.

Tap default replies to change the universal quick replies used by all apps.

If you want specific strings for specific apps, tap on the app you wish to tweak, and edit your replies accordingly.

Fitbit also lets users customize the emojis used for replies. To do this, tap on default replies or select individual apps. Tap the emoji tab next to the text tab on top of the page. Tweak your emojis accordingly.

Tap the microphone icon instead of the text or emoji icon on a notification.

You will then be prompted to speak your reply.

Once complete, tap send or retry to re-record your message.

You can also tap undo within three seconds to cancel the message.

The nifty thing about voice replies is the fact that you can switch between languages. On the Sense line and new Versa models, you can tap language to change between them. On the Versa 2, this option is hidden behind the three-dot menu icon alongside the currently selected language.

If you can now receive messages but your watch isn’t prompting you, check if Do Not Disturb or Sleep Mode is switched on. These two settings will suppress notifications on your Fitbit, so you must ensure both are toggled off. You can find both settings in your Fitbit device’s settings menu.

Finally, if the previous two steps failed, you could try uninstalling the Fitbit app on your phone. Ensure you have your login details handy — you must sign in to your Fitbit account after reinstallation.

Top Fitbit questions and answers

While you can reply to messages via notifications on supported Fitbits, you cannot start or send a new text message.

If Do Not Disturb is activated on your Fitbit, your device will not vibrate when you receive new messages.

How To Send A Voice Message In Instagram

Christmas is coming, and that’s when the number of messages that are sent increases. Instagram is well aware of this and wanted to make sending a message easier this holiday season.

This is a feature your finger is going to appreciate. You’ll finally be able to tell all without having to put your fingers on ice later. If you’ve sent voice messages on any other messaging app, then you won’t have any issues sending one on Instagram.

How to Send a Voice Message on Instagram

Sending a voice message on Instagram is very easy. Open an already existing conversation or start a new one. One way to start a conversation would be to tap on the other person’s profile picture and then tap on the Message option.

Like in any other app, all you need to do is press and hold the mic icon to record your voice message. If the message you are sending is a long one, there is a more comfortable way to record your messages.

The same way you would record a message in WhatsApp, after a few seconds of recording with your finger on the mic icon, swipe up and let go. The recording process will continue without you having to keep your finger on the mic icon.

When you’re done with your message, tap on the arrow to the right to send your message. If you made a mistake and want to erase your message, just swipe left towards the trash icon.

Once you’ve sent your audio and want to hear the recordings from a specific start point, there’s a way to do that. Place your finger on the lines of the audio and slide your finger to the sides. Find the point you you want to hear and let go.

As you slide your fingers, the dots of the audio will turn black as move forward and turn grey as you move backward. In order for this to work, the audio needs to be playing, or nothing will happen.

If you like an audio that you’ve received, double-tap on it to mark it with a heart. If you want to unlike it, tap on the heart, and it should disappear after that. Keep in mind that the recordings can only be a maximum of one minute and will be stored on both users’ conversations.

How to Unsend Instagram Voice Messages

During my testing, I was able to erase a message I sent over twelve hours after it was sent. To erase a message, long-press on the audio, and a message with the words “Unsend Message” will appear.

Tap on it, and you will see another window that will tell you that by erasing the audio it will be gone for both people in the conversation. If you’re sure this is what you want to do, tap on Unsend, and it will disappear.

How To Mute Group Text Messages In Android 11

Group text grants you the ability to easily communicate between multiple people, which is especially useful in a professional setting. However, there are times when it turns from friendly banter to an obnoxious riot. Not only can the influx of messages drain your battery, but it can also eat up your data. Can’t you just leave the group? Of course, you can! Maybe.

For one, abruptly leaving a group chat might be considered rude by other parties. You can’t just excuse yourself when all of your other relatives are a member of the group. They may take it the wrong way.

You also may not physically (or virtually in this case) be able to leave. Some messaging apps on Android won’t let you leave the group no matter what. The only way to be removed is to ask the group’s admin to do it for you.

Fortunately, you can opt to mute the group chat instead. This way, you won’t receive any notifications from the group, but you can still view the messages if you want to. This is a handy feature provided by all messaging apps so that you don’t have to take drastic measures, like turning off your phone, to deal with other people’s inability to maintain air silence.

Mute Group Text on Android Messages

First, we will start off with Android Messages, the built-in messaging app for most Android OS devices, including Google Pixels. Here’s what you need to do.

Open up the Messages app. If you have trouble finding the app, the logo is a white speech balloon on a blue circle background.

From the Messages’ home screen, select the designated group conversation you want to mute.

Once you open the group’s conversations in full screen, tap on the three vertical dots icon on the top-right corner to open up a dropdown menu.

Choose People & Options from the list of options.

Toggle the Notifications switch to off. You can unmute the group anytime by turning the switch back on.(Images needed for these steps)

Mute Group Text on WhatsApp

WhatsApp Messenger is one of the most— if not the most—popular messaging apps. With approximately 2 billion active users, there’s a decent chance you already have this app installed on your phone. To mute a group text on WhatsApp, you need to:

Open WhatsApp, then tap on the CHATS tab located at the top part of your screen, just beside the camera icon.

From the list of groups or individual conversations, tap the group you wish to mute.

Select Mute Notifications from the dropdown menu.

Using WhatsApp, you can choose how long you wish to keep the group chat on mute. If you simply need to mute the group momentarily during an important meeting or class, the 8 Hours option is probably enough. Otherwise, if you feel that the group will bother you for a long time, the 1 Week or 1 Year option might do the trick.

Make sure that Show Notifications is left unchecked. Should you check the box instead, the group messages will come to you through the notification bar. However, you won’t receive any kind of audible alert.

Once you are satisfied with your option, tap OK.

You can unmute any group text by tapping on the same three vertical dots icon and selecting Unmute Notifications.

Additionally, with WhatsApp, you can also exit a group chat if necessary.

Under the CHATS tab, tap on the group you wish to exit.

Once the group’s conversation is open, tap on the name of the group at the top screen to look at the group’s info.

Tap on Exit.

Mute Group Text on Telegram

Open the Telegram app.

Select which group you want to mute from the home screen.

Tap Mute Notifications, then choose for how long you want to mute the conversation.

If you wish to permanently silence notifications from the group, select Disable.

Final Thoughts

When someone exits a group, all of its other members can see it. In today’s day and age, this can make things a little awkward. Social media connectivity is taken almost as seriously as in-person interaction. That’s why opting to mute a group chat instead is a great alternative to mitigate any possible issues.

How To Send Windows 10 Programs To The System Tray

Usually when you minimize a program or app, it goes to the taskbar. This gives you quick access when you need to maximize it. But sometimes you don’t need a program cluttering up your taskbar when it just needs to run in the background, such as when you’re downloading files in your browser. That’s when it’s a good idea to send Windows 10 programs to the system tray instead.

While some programs have this option by default, many don’t. Several third-party tools let you send any Windows 10 program directly the system tray using the minimize option or a hotkey. This is also a great way to quickly hide running programs from prying eyes.

Minimize to Tray

One of the most commonly used tools to send Windows 10 programs to the system tray is Minimize to Tray. As the name implies, it minimizes apps to the system tray.

However, it doesn’t use the minimize button in the program’s window. Instead, it’s even easier, which is what makes it a popular choice. To send an active open window to the system tray and remove it from the taskbar, press Alt + F1, then press Alt + F2 to restore the last minimized window.

The tool is completely free and regularly updated. While I tested it on Windows 10, it does work on Windows 7 and 8 too.

Traymond

Traymond is one of the simplest apps to send Windows 10 programs to the system tray. It’s a portable program, has no settings, and erases any stored data when you close the app or restart your computer. If you want a third-party tool that doesn’t leave any real trace behind, Traymond is a great choice.

Traymond is easy to use, as there’s only one hotkey combo to remember. When any window is open, press Win + Shift + Z to minimize the window to the system tray. The program’s icon does show up in the tray.

Actual Window Minimizer

As the only premium option on the list, Actual Window Minimizer also works a little differently from the rest. Instead of a hotkey, this tool adds a new minimize option to every Windows 10 app window. This doesn’t replace your existing minimize icon.

Since the app does cost $19.95 and only provides free updates for a year, it does offer additional customization options. You can configure Actual Window Minimizer to use hotkeys, change the minimize mode and how to restore windows, and much more. It’s a much beefier option if you want more control and like the idea of having the minimize option in your Windows 10 program’s window.

There’s a 14-day free trial to see if you like the tool before you buy.

RBTray

It hasn’t been updated in a while, but it did work on Windows 10 in my own tests for browsers, folders, Office files, and more.

If you love using shortcuts and hotkeys as a Windows 10 user, make sure you know these 20 for faster navigation. Or, create your own custom hotkeys, just like a few of the options above allow you to do.

How To Copy And Paste Messages Using Gboard Clipboard In Android

Your Android phone only comes with a basic clipboard function. While you can copy a message and paste it on another app, you can only do it one message at a time. As soon as you copy a message, the previous one gets replaced. If you are a Gboard user, you will be glad to know that it comes with a native clipboard function. Its Clipboard feature can save your messages so you can easily access your clipboard history and paste it on an app. It can also store them all on the Gboard app to be used later.

Using the Gboard Clipboard Function

If your clipboard is off, tap on the toggle button near the top to activate it.

You will find your messages history on the clipboard. Gboard saves all messages typed in the last hour and doesn’t provide an option to change the duration. Tap on a message to paste to the editing field.

You can also pin a particular message to the clipboard to prevent it from being overwritten. Press and hold down on the message for a few seconds, and tap on the pin icon when it appears onscreen.

If you don’t want the clipboard to store your messages, you can turn off the function by toggling the button at the top.

Conclusion

Google has been adding plenty of features to Gboard, including the ability to type morse code, translate handwriting into text and create your own GIF emoji. While its Clipboard feature is not new, it is hidden from plain view, and not many people know about it. Now you can easily make use of this feature to copy and paste messages in your app.

Do you trust Google to store your clipboard content?
