Apple takes pride in making its products easily usable by all, including those who have blurred vision or can’t see. Its most recent VoiceOver feature, Screen Curtain, stands testimony to it. While VoiceOver empowers people to use the device by hearing audio feedbacks, Screen Curtain is designed to offer privacy and confidentiality.

Let me tell you more about it and show you how to use Screen Curtain on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac.

What is Screen Curtain on iPhone?

Screen Curtain, as evident from its name, is a privacy feature that turns off the screen while using VoiceOver. This is helpful when you are in public places and wish to hide what is on your screen. For example, if you are checking your banking information at an airport using VoiceOver, Screen Curtain will ensure that the display is off and no one can see it.

How to use Screen Curtain on iPhone and iPad

Before you begin to use Screen Curtain, ensure VoiceOver is enabled. For this, go to Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver → enable VoiceOver.

Once VoiceOver is on, use three fingers to tap three times on the screen quickly. You will hear VoiceOver say ‘Screen Curtain on,’ and the iPhone or iPad screen will turn off. You can continue using the device via VoiceOver.

To turn off Screen Curtain, follow the same method. That is, quickly triple-tap using three fingers.

Notes:

If from Settings → Accessibility → Zoom is on, you will have to tap four times with three fingers to enable Screen Curtain.

If you use a Bluetooth keyboard with your iPad or iPhone, press control + option + shift + S to enable or disable Screen Curtain.

Turn on VoiceOver and use Screen Curtain on Apple Watch

Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone and tap My Watch.

Tap Accessibility.

Tap VoiceOver and enable it.

Next, toggle on Screen Curtain. Now, whenever you use VoiceOver on the watch, Screen Curtain will be active.

Follow the same steps to turn Screen Curtain off.

Note: You may also open Apple Watch Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver → Screen Curtain to enable or disable this option.

How to use Screen Curtain on Mac

Before you begin to use Screen Curtain, make sure VoiceOver is on. For this, press command + F5. You may also open System Preferences → Accessibility → VoiceOver → Enable VoiceOver.

Now that VoiceOver is on, here are three methods to enable or disable Screen Curtain on Mac.

Method 1. Quick shortcut keys for Screen Curtain

Press VO + shift + fn + _

Notes:

VO key will most likely be control + option, or the caps lock key. You can check this by opening VoiceOver Utility and see the keys next to Keys to use as the VoiceOver modifier:.

_ is underscore.

Thus, to enable or disable Screen Curtain on Mac, press: control + option + shift + fn + _

Method 2. Enable Screen Curtain using VoiceOver command help guide

Press VO + HH. That most likely will be: control + option + HH

Type Screen Curtain and hit the enter key. Mac’s screen will turn black.

Follow the same steps to turn it off.

Method 3. Enable Screen Curtain using three-finger triple-tap

You can triple-tap with three fingers on Mac’s trackpad to turn on Screen Curtain. It is similar to Screen Curtain on iPhone.

However, this works if you use TrackPad Commander on your Mac. For this, open System Preferences → Accessibility → VoiceOver → Open VoiceOver Utility → Commanders → Enable Trackpad Commander.

What’s Dock On Apple Watch And How To Use It?

When you press the side button on your Apple Watch, you see the Dock. Depending on the setting, the watchOS Dock has either your favorite apps or the ones you used recently. In this tutorial, we tell you more about the Apple Watch Dock, how to use it, add favorite apps, and get the most of it.

Does my Apple Watch have a Dock or App Switcher?

This is an interesting question.

On an iPhone, the bottom part of the Home Screen with four essential apps is the Dock. And when you swipe up from the bottom of the screen or quickly double-press the Home button, you see the App Switcher, which has cards for all the apps you recently opened.

On an Apple Watch, the screen is tiny, and thus you do not have a Home Screen that can mimic the iPhone-like Dock. To address this, watchOS has a hybrid screen where you can have up to ten favorite apps or configure it only to show the apps you opened recently. Apple calls this screen the Dock, and you can access it by pressing the side button.

How to use the Dock on Apple Watch

To get the most out of the tiny computer on your wrist, you can use its Dock which lets you switch among favorite or recent apps. Let’s show you how to do that and more.

Press the side button from the watch face, app bubble, or any app screen.

Use a finger or Digital Crown to swipe through.

Tap to use one of the apps listed here.

Swipe left and tap X to remove a recent app. If Dock is set to display favorite apps, tapping X will remove it from Favorites.

From the bottom, tap All Apps to see the app bubble.

Press the side button or Digital Crown to close the Dock.

How to choose Recent or Favorite apps for Apple Watch Dock

Here’s how to set your Apple Watch Dock to display recently used apps or the favorite apps:

Press the Digital Crown and tap the Settings icon.

Scroll down and tap Dock.

Choose either:

Favorites: If you use your Apple Watch for fixed tasks like workouts, listening to music on the run, quickly calculating a tip, and such, you might want to have only your favorite apps on the Dock. Choosing Favorites ensures you can instantly launch these essential apps by pressing the side button and tapping its card.

Recents: On the other hand, choose this if you want an iPhone-like experience where all your recently used apps are in the Dock (or App Switcher).

You can do the same from your iPhone via the Watch app.

How to set favorite apps for Apple Watch Dock

Though you can choose to arrange your apps by favorites (or recents) on the Apple Watch itself, you need the paired iPhone to customize the list of favorite apps.

Here’s how to add or remove apps from Favorites and reorder their position:

Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.

From the My Watch tab, tap Dock.

Make sure Favorites is checked and tap Edit.

Tap the green plus icon next to an app to add it to Favorites. You can repeat this with 9 more apps. 10 in total.

Touch the hamburger icon (three short lines) and move it up or down to rearrange its position. The apps on the top appear on the top of the Dock on Apple Watch. So, make sure you keep the most used ones in the top three.

Finally, tap Done.

Apple Watch multitasking tip

By now, you know how to use the Apple Watch Dock to multitask and use apps efficiently. Given the tiny screen, I rarely use apps on it. But if you’re a pro user, here’s one more tip that lets you switch back and forth between two apps on Apple Watch.

Open the first app.

Open the second app from the app bubble or Dock.

Double-press the Digital Crown to instantly switch between these two apps.

How To Use Screen Time Limits On Mac To Concentrate On Your Work

This guide helps you concentrate on your work by showing you how to use Screen Time limits on Mac. With this, you can limit unnecessary apps, focus on work apps, and be productive.

You may have set up Screen Time for your kids on iPhone or iPad to limit the apps they can use and when. But have you considered limiting your own usage with Screen Time?

This is a handy way to restrict the time you spend on your iPhone or iPad. However, with Screen Time on Mac, you can limit yourself, so you aren’t drawn to play instead of work.

If you work from a home office, staying focused on your work can be difficult. With temptations like social media, games, or emails, you can easily see a notification and be lured from what you’re doing. Before you know it, a few minutes of non-work can turn into hours of it.

Use Screen Time to identify your distractions

Not every app or website is as tempting to one person as another. So before you can set up Screen Time to eliminate those distractions, you have to figure out what they are.

This might be easy. You may know right off the bat that if you see a social media notification, you’ll jump over to Facebook or Twitter immediately. Or maybe you know that your lives are replenishing in your favorite game soon and will certainly go use them.

If you already know what takes your focus elsewhere, then you’re one step ahead. But if you’re not sure, take a look at the Screen Time reports. These will show you where you spend your time on Mac and when.

How to see Screen Time usage reports

You can also pick Categories instead of Apps to see how much time you spend using Entertainment or Social Networking apps.

The top of the App Usage section gives you a breakdown in a graphical form to show you the times of day that you use these apps and sites.

Along with App Usage, you can select the Notifications and Pickups reports. These show you how many notifications you get, from where, and when in addition to the number of times you “pick up” your device and the apps you use when you do.

Take a little time to view the information in the Screen Time reports. It’s guaranteed to enlighten you and help you identify what limits you need to set.

How to set app limits on Mac

You can set up limits for yourself in two spots; from the App Usage report or the App Limits area.

Limit apps from App Usage

If you find that you really only need to limit yourself to one or two apps, doing this from App Usage is easy. Here’s how.

Limit apps from App Limits

If you have realized that you spend more time than you should on a variety of apps, then it might be easier to set up limits using the App Limits area. The steps are easy, as shown below.

5) Next to Time, set your Every Day or Custom time limit.

If it’s certain websites that you visit that are the biggest distractions, check out our tutorial for restricting websites on Mac with Screen Time.

How to limit all Mac apps except a few

If you find that you use so many different apps that can be distracting during your workday and decide to choose All Apps & Categories as your limit (explained above), you can still access those apps you really need with the Always Allowed section.

Concentrate on your work

You might be in a situation where you’re only working from home temporarily, or perhaps you’ve started a new full-time remote job. Either way, setting up restrictions for yourself only works if you put your mind to adhering to your own rules. So before you go back to Mac’s Screen Time and remove a limit to that enjoyable game or a busy chat app, keep that in mind.

How To Use Private Mac Address On Iphone & Ipad

iPhone and iPad users can further safeguard their privacy by using a private MAC address feature in iOS and iPadOS. This should be particularly useful if you’re frequently connecting to different public wi-fi networks, and you don’t want the devices MAC address tracking to be used.

For some technical background, every time you connect to a Wi-Fi network regardless of the device you’re using, your device has to identify itself to the network using a MAC address. The MAC address is typically a hardware address associated with your device, and by default the same MAC address is used as you switch between different Wi-Fi networks, which could be a security or privacy risk since it identifies your device. Furthermore, network operators and observers can easily track your activity and access your location over time since the same MAC address is used. However, Apple has managed to address this issue with the iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 and later system software versions, by allowing devices to use a unique MAC address for each network. This is sort of like spoofing a MAC address with a random address, if you’re on the geekier side and familiar with that process, except it’s automated and doesn’t require any tinkering at a command line.

If this feature sounds compelling to you, read along and you’ll learn how you can randomize and privatize your MAC addresses on iPhone and iPad.

How to Use Private MAC Address on iPhone & iPad

Make sure your device is running iOS 14/iPadOS 14 or later before going ahead with the procedure, since this privacy feature isn’t available on older versions.

It’s important to note that each time you disable and re-enable the Private MAC Address feature, a new Wi-Fi MAC address will be used with the network. This is why you’re prompted to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network.

Resetting the network settings on your device will also change the private Wi-Fi address it uses for the connection.

Despite all the security benefits of using a Private MAC address like reduced user tracking and profiling across networks, this feature could sometimes prevent you from connecting to certain Wi-Fi networks. For example, some networks may be unable to identify your device as authorized to join, since some networks use MAC address filtering as an authentication to determine which devices are allowed on a network – this is particularly common in institutional settings with multiple layers of security. Also, sometimes the network that allows you to join with a private address might block you from internet access. You can turn off the feature if you have any trouble.

Do you use an Apple Watch alongside your iPhone? Although we were focusing on the iPhone and iPad in this article, you’ll be excited to know that you can enable or disable Private Address on an Apple Watch too, as long as watchOS 7 or a newer version is installed.

Mac users don’t yet have this option natively as a simple setting, but instead they can use the command line to spoof or change a MAC address if desired.
