With the number of messaging apps that you regularly use, texts you receive on the native Messages app on the iPhone may typically go unnoticed. If you’re like us, you may often find it difficult to search for something important among the sea of irrelevant messages you get daily. While you were able to remove these messages from your iPhone in the past, sometimes you could also end up accidentally deleting a text that was of significance.
To prevent this from happening, Apple now allows iPhone users to keep deleted messages in the Recently Deleted section which can be accessed at a later time if the user needs them. In this post, we’ll explain everything you need to know about Recently Deleted messages on iOS 16 and how you may use it on your iPhone.

What are ‘Recently Deleted’ messages on iOS 16?
Recently Deleted is a new section inside the Messages app on iOS 16 which lets you view any messages you deleted from your iPhone in the last month. Any messages you delete from your iMessage account will show up inside this section and this includes text messages, pictures, voice messages, or files shared by you or others. Messages inside the Recently Deleted section would include both single messages you removed from a conversation as well as entire conversations.
Before this, when you deleted a message on iOS 15, the message would instantly be removed from your iPhone and wouldn’t be readily recoverable. Instead, the only way to recover deleted messages on iOS 15 was to restore your iPhone to an older backup that had saved the message you want to recover.
With iOS 16, you can easily access the messages you delete and even recover them for a limited time before they’re permanently deleted from your iPhone.

How to move messages on your iPhone to Recently Deleted
Messages can be moved to Recently Deleted when you delete them from the Messages app on your iPhone. To move messages to Recently Deleted, open the Messages app on your iPhone.
Note: This will only be possible if your iPhone runs on iOS 16 or later. If you’re running on an older version of iOS, the messages you delete wouldn’t be accessible unless you restore your iPhone to an older backup.
Delete an entire message thread
Inside Messages, locate the thread you want to remove a message from. If you wish to move an entire message thread, tap and hold on the preferred thread.
In the overflow menu that appears, select Delete.
In the prompt that appears at the bottom, tap on Delete to confirm your action.
Delete a single message from a thread
If you wish to delete a single message from a thread, open the thread by tapping on it.
In the overflow menu that appears, select More.
The selected message will now be highlighted with a blue tick icon on the left-hand side. From this screen, you can select more messages from the thread you wish to move to the Recently Deleted section. Once you’ve selected the messages you want to move, tap on the trash icon at the bottom left corner.
In the prompt that appears at the bottom, tap on Delete Messages.
The selected messages will now be sent to the Recently Deleted section inside the Messages app.

What happens when you move messages to Recently Deleted?
When you delete a message on iOS 16, the selected message or thread will instantly move to the Recently Deleted folder inside the Messages app. iOS stores all of your recent messages inside this section for up to 30 days from the time you deleted a message.
During this time, you can access any of the messages you sent to Recently Deleted, bring them back to your conversations, or delete them manually from there to permanently erase any trace of these messages.
Once a message is older than 30 days, iOS will remove it from the Recently Deleted folder and delete it forever. Apple mentions that it may take up to 40 days on some occasions for the messages to get deleted.
How long can you view a message inside Recently Deleted?
As mentioned above, messages and conversations you move to the Recently Deleted folder will be accessible inside the Messages app for up to 30 days from the date you deleted a message from the Messages screen. After this time expires, the Messages app will permanently delete the expired messages from your account and you won’t be able to view them or recover them from any device.
If a message you moved to the Recently Deleted folder is nearing its expiration date, you can move it back to the main messages screen and then delete it again to renew its expiration date to another 30 days.

How to find Recently Deleted Messages on your iPhone
The messages you deleted from the Messages app won’t appear alongside your active conversations on the app. Instead, they will be accessible inside a separate Recently Deleted folder that can be accessed within the Messages app. To find your recently deleted messages, open the Messages app on your iPhone.
Inside Messages, tap on Filters at the top left corner.
On the next screen, you’ll see all the different filters that your texts are categorized into. From here, tap on Recently Deleted at the bottom.
In the Recently Deleted screen that appears, you’ll see a list of messages you deleted in the last 30 days.
You won’t be able to open a conversation or a message directly from this screen. If you wish to open a deleted message, you will need to recover them back to your conversations.
How to recover or delete Recently Deleted Messages from your iPhone
iOS 16 allows you to recover any text or conversation you deleted in the last 30 days from the Recently Deleted section or you can choose to delete them permanently from your iPhone if you no longer wish to keep them.
Recover messages from Recently Deleted
In the Recently Deleted screen, you’ll see a list of messages that you deleted within the last 30 days. If you wish to recover a message from this screen and send them back to your active conversations, select the message from this list. You can select multiple messages from this list and when you make your section, you will see a blue tick icon appear on the left-hand side of the selected messages.
Once you’ve made your selection, tap on Recover at the bottom right corner.
To confirm this action, select Recover Messages in the prompt that appears at the bottom.
The selected messages will now move back to the main conversations screen inside the Messages app.
You can also recover all the messages from the Recently Deleted screen and move them back to your conversations by tapping on Recover All at the bottom right corner.
To confirm this action, select Recover Messages in the prompt that appears at the bottom.
This will recover all of your recently deleted messages and move them back to the messages screen; thus emptying the Recently Deleted section.
Delete messages from Recently Deleted
Inside the Recently Deleted screen, you’ll see a list of messages that you deleted within the last 30 days. To delete one of the messages from this section, select a message you want to remove and a blue tick icon will appear on its left-hand side. You can select as many messages as you want to delete to remove them in bulk.
Once you’ve made your selection, tap on Delete at the bottom left corner.
You will see a prompt at the bottom asking you to confirm your action. In this prompt, select Delete Messages.
When you do that, the selected messages will be deleted from all your Apple device and will not be recoverable at any point in the future.
You can also delete all of the messages you moved to the Recently Deleted section by tapping on Delete All at the bottom left corner.
In the familiar prompt that shows up, tap on Delete Messages to confirm your action.
Since the Recently Deleted section has been emptied, you will be taken back to the list of filters where you will no longer see a Recently Deleted folder on the screen.
I cannot see messages I moved to Recently Deleted. Why?
The Recently Deleted screen will show all the messages you deleted from your iPhone as well as the ones you removed from other Apple devices. The feature requires you to run on iOS 16 or later; meaning this section won’t be accessible on devices running on iOS 15 or earlier. If you wish to move your messages to the Recently Deleted section, you thus need to make sure you’re deleting them from an iPhone on iOS 16.
In case you cannot see the messages you deleted inside the Recently Deleted section, it could be because:
The message you’re looking for has already reached its expiration date (i.e. 30 days) and iOS has automatically removed it permanently from your iPhone.
You had manually recovered the message that you deleted before which means this message will be accessible inside the main Messages screen alongside your active conversations.
You have already deleted the message (intentionally or by mistake) from the Recently Deleted section at which point there’s no way you can recover it back.
Messages you deleted before updating to iOS 16 won’t show up inside the Recently Deleted folder as they may have been removed permanently from your iPhone.
If you’re unable to access messages you recently deleted:
You need to look for them inside the Recently Deleted section as instructed earlier in this post.
The Recently Deleted screen is unavailable because your iPhone is running on iOS 15 or an older version.
That’s all you need to know about Recently Deleted Messages on iOS 16.

Lock screen customization is among the most significant talking points on iOS 16 and rightly so. Apple has added widget support on the lock screen, you can create multiple lock screens at any time and switch between them, and perhaps the biggest change to come to it visually is Depth Effect.
Depth Effect is when parts of your wallpaper cover the time or digital clock to give you a mirage as if your wallpaper is interacting with elements of your lock screen. In this post, we’ll explain what Depth Effect is all about and how you can get the lock screen time/clock behind a wallpaper on iOS 16.

What is the Depth Effect feature in iOS 16?
As the name implies, the Depth Effect on iOS 16 adds several layers of depth to your wallpaper. When you apply a lock screen wallpaper on your iPhone, iOS utilizes your device’s Neural Engine to detect depth information from the image you applied. This way, your iPhone will be able to separate subjects you want to be in focus on from the rest of the elements of your wallpaper.
With the subject now in focus, Depth Effect will now push the rest of the wallpaper behind the lock screen clock with the subject now covering some portion of the clock. You will now see a cool-looking effect where some (bottom) parts of the iOS clock are hidden under your wallpaper’s subject with the rest of it at the back.

How to get time behind wallpaper on iPhone lock screen on iOS 16
You can move the time widget on the lock screen behind elements of your wallpaper by enabling Depth Effect. You can turn on Depth Effect on your current wallpaper or a new background from your camera roll by following the instructions below.
To enable Depth Effect, unlock your phone using Face ID but do not go to the home screen yet. For this, simply press the Side button, show your face to the iPhone and let the Lock Screen get unlocked. Now, long-press anywhere on the unlocked lock screen.
When the lock screen goes into edit mode, tap on Customize at the bottom to enable Depth Effect on your existing lock screen wallpaper. If you wish to keep your current lock screen as it is and create another lock screen with a new background, tap on the + button at the bottom right corner.
If you chose the latter option, follow the instructions below. If not, skip this set of instructions to proceed. When you tap on the + button, you will reach the Add New Wallpaper screen. Here, select Photos at the top to choose a new wallpaper.
On the next screen, you’ll see all the pictures in your iPhone library. From here, select the background you wish to add as your new lock screen wallpaper.
The selected background will now load onto the lock screen edit screen and you can continue the steps of applying the Depth Effect on it the same way you would on an existing background by following the steps below.
Regardless of whether you’re editing your current lock screen or adding a new one, you will now enter the Customize screen where all the elements at the top of your lock screen will appear inside boxes. If iOS can detect different layers of your background, then Depth Effect should be enabled automatically. If not, you need to bring the subject you want to focus closer to the lock screen clock at the top.
As you can see from the above screenshot, the subject (beige-colored building) isn’t anywhere near the lock screen clock; so Depth Effect isn’t in effect. To be able to use the Depth Effect, pinch outwards using two fingers on the screen to zoom into the background, so that the subject expands to touch certain parts of the lock screen clock. You can also use two fingers to reposition the subject to your desired location on the lock screen.
Depth effect should get enabled automatically when iOS detects that some elements of the subject are closer to the clock.
In case it’s not enabled on its own, tap on the 3-dots icon at the bottom right corner.
From the overflow menu, select Depth Effect until a tick mark appears on its left.
You will now see that the subject (the building) now covers part of the clock to get you the desired Depth Effect.
You can further zoom in/out of the background (by dragging with two fingers) to reposition the subject relative to the clock however you want. When you’re done editing your lock screen, tap on Add at the top right corner to save changes.
iOS will now preview your new lock screen and home screen in a box at the bottom. If you’re satisfied with both the looks, tap on Set as Wallpaper Pair. You can also choose Custom Home Screen to personalize your home screen wallpaper separately.
Your new lock screen with Depth Effect will now be previewed on the Customize screen. To activate it, tap on this new lock screen.
You will now see the new lock screen enabled with Depth Effect on your iPhone.

How to crop the lock screen wallpaper
If you wish to crop a background to apply it as your lock screen wallpaper, you can use the Wallpaper aspect ratio that’s available inside the Photos app on iOS 16 and then use this cropped background as your new wallpaper. An easier way is to set the background directly on your lock screen and then crop it using the Pinch to Crop tool within the lock screen’s Edit screen. You can check out both of these methods in the post linked below.

Depth Effect requirements and supported devices
Depth requires your iPhone to be powered by Apple’s A12 Bionic chipset or later and can thus work on the following devices:
iPhone XR, iPhone XS/Max
iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro/Max
iPhone SE (2023 and 2023)
iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro/Max
iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro/Max
iPhone 14/Plus, iPhone 14 Pro/Max
The iPhone X and iPhone 8 both offer Depth Effect but the feature is restricted to the native wallpapers available on iOS 16. This means you cannot use pictures from your Camera Roll to apply the Depth Effect on these two devices.
► How to Do Depth Effect on iPhone X
Besides these requirements, you need to make sure that the wallpaper you want to apply Depth Effect on has subjects that distinguish themselves from the rest of the image. For this, you can check for wallpapers that have a clear background at the top with the subjects underneath. This way, iOS will be able to separate the subject from the wallpaper leaving the clear background behind the clock for a distinct look.
Depth Effect won’t work on images where there are no clear subjects or any kind of depth information that iOS can use to split the background into many layers. You can crop any image to work with Depth Effect if the subject you want to focus on isn’t clearly visible by default.
That’s all you need to know about getting the lock screen time behind your wallpaper on iOS 16.

There are plenty of perks of living in our modern times, but the one major downside is the stress and hustle that seems impossible to escape no matter where you go. Well, it may not be impossible anymore! I have found a magical ‘portal” of escape that is an easy way to add more zen to our lives, anytime, anywhere.
I’m talking about Portal, an immersive soundscapes app that promises to change your surroundings to cut down stress and improve your sleep, productivity, and overall mental wellbeing? Does it actually manage to achieve this? Read my full review below to find out.Portal – Immersive Escapes: What’s it all about?
As the name suggests, the Portal app is designed to transport you to serenity through the power of ambient sounds. More specifically, it brings binaural 3D audio and cinematic ultra HD visuals from some of the world’s most beautiful places to your iPhone or iPad.
These soundscapes include forests, waterfalls, serene lakes, beaches, forests, and more. So, the app serves as your virtual portal to over 40 relaxing spots that you’d want to visit in real life.
But what exactly is the purpose? Well, according to the founder, Nick Daniels, the app lets you change your surroundings so that you can experience the soothing, rejuvenating power of nature even when you’re trapped in an urban jungle.
In a way, it’s similar to meditation apps but focuses purely on ambient sound rather than any sort of music or auditory guidance.
As an avid traveler and wellness enthusiast, I was intrigued and eager to try it out. Let’s have a look at how it works. How to use the Portal app on iPhone
When you open the Portal app, it will ask you to choose an option from three modes, described below.Focus
This mode helps you concentrate on the task at hand and has the Pomodoro technique integrated into it. That is 25 minutes of work, followed by a 5-minute break. Of course, you can change this timing if you want.
You can type the task you want to focus on and start the timer. I think it makes an excellent audio-visual companion to iOS 15’s Focus mode.Sleep
This mode is to drift off into slumberland, with a timer automatically turning off the sound and an alarm for the following day. You will be woken up by a fade-in of sounds from the portal you select, along with matching lighting if you’ve connected your compatible smart lights.Escape
This mode is for all those times when you need a break from life. It’s perfect for meditation, with a default timer of 20 minutes that can be adjusted as you like. Take a trip to Scotland, Nepal, or some other exotic destination right in the middle of your day! It also provides four different breathing exercises to relax and tune into your body.
No matter which mode you pick, you have over 40 different scenes or “portals” to tune into.
Some of my favorites include:
Pacific Waves of Hawaii
Dawn at Lake Bled in Slovenia
Redwood National Park in California
Spring Barley Field in Devon, United Kingdom
Highlands Snow in Scotland
Once you’ve selected a portal, just put on your headphones and let the sound work its magic. It continues playing even when you navigate away from the app or lock your device screen.
You can pause and resume it from your lock screen anytime. Even as I write this, I’m listening to the Pacific Waves and pretending that I’m on the beach in Hawaii. It’s such a relief to block out the noise of other people’s conversations while I concentrate on work!Portal app options: Use it your way
In addition to mesmerizing, high-quality sound and visuals, Portal gives you several options to customize your experience. These are explained below.1. Timer
This is pretty self-explanatory. As mentioned above, each mode comes with a default timer, but you can adjust it as you like so that the app can be a convenient part of your routine.2. Static vs. dynamic audio
For those who have headphones supporting Apple’s Spatial Audio, you can enjoy a truly immersive experience with dynamic sound on the Portal app.
Not all soundscapes support this feature yet, but those that do are simply magical. Nonetheless, even the default static audio is of top-notch quality with a rich, detailed sound that replicates the respective natural environment.3. Night dock
This feature can be found in the settings menu of the app. Once enabled, it darkens the Portal background, automatically hides the interface, and prevents the app from locking. You can opt to lock the screen if that’s what you prefer.4. Mix audio functionality
This one’s a unique feature that’s my favorite! Once enabled, it allows the Portal app to continue playing simultaneously with other audio such as music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc. This is pretty cool, and I love the experience!5. Smart lighting
Take things up a notch by connecting the app to your HomeKit, Philips Hue, or Nanoleaf smart lights to create beautiful ambient lighting effects that match the portal you’ve chosen. For instance, you could be greeted with some rose-colored light as you wake up to the Dawn at Lake Bled portal. My experience with the Portal app: Magical or meh? iGeekometer User-friendliness
88%Sound quality and visuals
90%Value for money
I’ve tried all three modes, and it’s helped me work better, fall asleep faster, and get in some quick meditations throughout the day to calm my mind. Moreover, the user interface is beautifully designed and easy to find your way around.
All in all, Portal is a great app to have in your mental wellness toolkit because it provides the perfect escape from the chaos of everyday life.
High-quality sounds and visuals
Plenty of soundscape choices
Clean, intuitive interface
Value for money
The lighting to match each scene could be further improved
Portal is free to download, but you can only get six portals in the free version. You can try these out and then purchase an annual subscription to access the entire library. It works out to less than $5 a month, which is definitely worth it!

2. Be Sure to Allow the Website to Download Beta Profile on your iPhone
Another important thing that you should do is to allow the Apple website (or a third party site from where you are trying to get the iOS 16 beta software profile) to download the Beta profile. Agreed, this may sound very simple to many, but a number of people tend to forget to hit Allow in the popup and are left wondering what has prevented the software beta profile from showing up. Well, it has actually happened to be once. So, I know how frustrating it gets.
3. Ensure That You Have Enough Space Left to Install the iOS 16 Beta
If your iPhone is cluttered with for space or for that matter does not have sufficient space, you won’t be able to install iOS 16 update. Therefore, clean up your device to ensure redundant files and apps no longer hog the precious storage space unnecessarily.
2. If there is not much free space left on your device, get rid of all the useless screenshots, photos, apps, and files to recover the needed space.
4. Be Sure to Install the Beta Profile
Once you have got the beta profile, you will need to go through a brief installation procedure and also agree to Apple’s terms and conditions. Make sure you have followed this essential procedure.
Bear in mind that during installation you will be prompted to bring the changes to come into effect.
5. Restart Your iPhone
If the issue has not yet been solved, restart your iPhone. This might be a very simple solution but it has proved to be more than a handful on numerous occasions in fixing common problems. Hence, there is no harm in giving it a chance, is it?
On iPhone with Face ID: Press and hold the volume up/down button and the side button at once. After that, slide the power off slider to shut down your iPhone. Then, hold down the side button again to turn on your device.
On iPhone with Touch ID: Press and hold the side button and then drag the power off slider to turn off your device. After that, press and hold the side button to turn on the device.
6. Reset Network Settings
If your device is faced with network issues or your WiFi connection is poor, better fix it in the very first place. Otherwise, you would continue to face the iOS 16 software update issue.
One of the most reliable ways to fix a sluggish WiFi network is to reset the entire settings. Though it is quite radical and you have to enter your WiFi password again, it is worth giving a try, given how effective it has been.
7. Hard Reset Your iPhone
Hard reset is like my go-to troubleshooter for fixing annoying issues that tend to crop up every now and then. Considering how loyal it has always been, I’m going to count on it to resolve the iOS 16 software update problem as well.
1. To do so, press and quickly release the volume up button.
2. Then, you need to press and release the volume down button.
3. Next, make sure to hold down the power or the side button until you see the familiar Apple logo on the screen.
After your device has rebooted, go back to the Software Update setting to check if the iOS 16 update has appeared. If it has, you have got the better of the problem. Rejoice!
8. Remove the Old Beta Profile
If you had installed the Beta Profile of iOS 15 and have not removed it before going for iOS 16, the old beta profile may be coming in the way. So, try removing it.

But before you set your sight on exploring the latest iteration of iOS, do not forget to share your invaluable feedback with us. Also, be sure to let us know the solution that has got your job done.
Even though iOS 16 is touted to be a huge upgrade thanks to a ton of impressive features like Lock Screen customization, background removal tool, and the ability to lock photos with Face ID, it is faced with some annoying issues including the rapid battery drain and apps crashing.
Recently, many users have reported that apps are crashing unexpectedly on iPhone after iOS 16 update. But fret not, this is where we come into play. Read on to check out these 6 best tips and tricks to fix the app crashing issue on iPhone and iPad after the iOS 16 software update.
When you are dealing with a frustrating problem like this one, it’s better to get a good understanding of the possible reasons upfront. So, let’s get it out of the way!
The biggest reason why apps tend to crash after a software update is the lack of support for the latest version of the operating system. If apps have not yet been updated or optimized to work with the latest iteration of OS, they would face a host of problems.
Apart from incompatibility, you should also keep in mind the storage clutter. If the storage of your device has been clogged up, the device would become rather sluggish, overheat, and also eat into more battery. Not to mention, the cluttered space could also cause apps to crash.
On top of all, you should never rule out the possibility of software bugs. Without undermining the vast enhancements, the modern versions of iOS are often plagued by too many bugs.
In most cases, apps tend to crash due to the outdated version. So, if you haven’t updated the apps on your iOS device for some time, there is a good chance that the outdated version could be at the heart of the crashing issue. Hence, updating the apps could rescue you straight away.
1. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad and tap on your profile at the top right corner of the screen.
2. Scroll down to find the problematic apps and update them all.
3. If you have a stable WiFi connection, you can choose to update all the apps at once. To do so, just hit the Update All button and you are good to go!
2. Hard Reset Your Device
Whenever a common issue strikes my iPhone, I make sure to give a try to the hard reset solution. On many occasions, it helps me resolve problems without any fuss. Thus, I’m going to bank on it to get rid of this issue as well.
1. Press and quickly release the volume up button. Then, press and release the volume down button.
2. In the end, hold down the power button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
3. Once your device has rebooted, open the app to check if the issue is gone. If it has, it’s time to rejoice.
3. Delete and Reinstall the Crashing Apps
If the apps continue to crash on your iPhone even after you have updated them, delete and reinstall the problematic apps. But before going for the kill, I would recommend you back up the app as the app deletion will wipe out the entire associated data.
2. Now, open the App Store and find the app you are looking for. After that, download the app as usual.
4. Declutter Your iPhone
Ensure that the storage of your iPhone is not cluttered with too many redundant apps and useless files. The unexpected app crashing issue could be due to the cluttered space. Therefore, cleaning up the storage could get rid of the issue.
2. You should see a storage bar at the top of the screen showing both the used and available storage.
3. Besides, you should also see a long list of apps on the screen with the total amount of storage each app has consumed.
4. Having got a clear idea about the apps that have taken up more storage on your device, now go ahead with the cleanup drive and wipe out everything that’s no longer needed.
5. Reset All Settings
Factory reset has long been like a go-to troubleshooter for me, especially when dealing with a frustrating problem that does not seem to get sorted out with basic tips. If the app crashing problem remains on your device, you should go for this reliable solution as well.
1. Navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Now, tap on General. After that, scroll down to the bottom and tap on Reset or Transfer iPhone/iPad.
2. Now, tap on Reset and hit Reset All Settings in the menu.
3. Next, you will need to enter your device passcode as well as Screen Time Passcode (if it’s turned on) and tap on Reset All Settings again in the popup menu to confirm the action.
If none of the tricks has worked in fixing the app crashing issues on your iPhone, there is a high chance that the problem could be due to a software bug. But there is no need to panic as software updates have got the knack of troubleshooting a bug. Notably, Apple has a great track record of frequently releasing software updates with a number of bug fixes and performance improvements.
