Suggested April 2024 Is Covering Your Laptop’S Microphone And Camera A Good Practice?

Recently Mark Zuckerberg made the news when a picture showed him with his laptop, and the camera and microphone were covered up. This set everyone discussing it as to whether it was necessary or whether it was leading too much into paranoia. We decided to pose this question to our writers and asked them “Is covering up your laptop’s microphone and camera a good practice?”

Our Opinion

For the most part, we found that many of our writers believe covering up the camera and microphone is a good idea. While Derrik doesn’t have a laptop anymore, he does believe it’s a good practice to not have the camera and microphone available. When he did have a laptop he uninstalled the Linux module for cameras and just used a USB camera when he needed to.

Mahesh also believes it’s a good idea so that you’re not sharing anything with “spying eyes.” However, he wants to make sure people are doing it because they feel they should, not just because Zuckerberg did it. After that picture made headlines, he saw websites teaching everyone how to do it, informing everyone they should do it as well.

Trevor figures there is always someone smarter than him who might want to use his information to steal his identity or mine it for someone else. He sees it as a good idea even if you’re not a person of interest like Zuckerberg. He compares it to locking the door on your house or not writing your PIN number on your ATM card: preventative.

Charnita sees it as a good practice if it makes you feel comfortable but not just because it’s a new trend. She rarely uses a computer that has a camera or microphone so doesn’t worry about it. She doesn’t see it as important in her case, whereas she can see how it would be important for Zuckerberg. She jokes, “If someone wants to watch me stare at my screen all night long, they must be really bored.”

I very much agree with Charnita. I don’t see anything wrong with it, but I don’t necessarily see the point for someone like me. To me, it’s a little too “foil hat.” I’m usually on my iPad and not a laptop anymore, but I still wouldn’t be worried about it if I was. They wouldn’t see or hear anything interesting other than me talking to my family. Maybe they’d heard some good gossip, but that would be about it. Maybe it’s ignorance on my part, but as they say, “Ignorance is bliss.”

Kick Your Laptop Up A Notch With Kickflip

There are times when typing at a flat angle is uncomfortable. It is most noticeable when using my MacBook Air 13″. All of the keyboards I use, including Apple’s standard wireless keyboard, are angled for ease-of-use. Contrary to standard keyboards, Apples laptop line sits flat on the resting surface.

Asking to “kick it up a notch,” Bluelounge released the Kickflip just a few weeks ago. Hoping to increase productivity and ease everyone’s wrists, the Kickflip does just as the name suggests: props your laptop with just a flip.

Form and function

Using a small footprint, the Kickflip makes a large difference in typing placement. Kickflip is 9″/23 cm and 11″/28 cm for 13″ and 15″ MacBooks, respectively. It is originally designed for a MacBook Pro, but works just as well on my MacBook Air. The device clings tightly to the laptop using a German engineered gel adhesive. The bond is fairly strong, but easily releases if tugged intently. Most importantly, the gel does not leave a residue and can be re-used by washing with mild soap and water.

The gel is a new direction for Bluelounge, which has used micro-suction padding in the past. Currently, I have no preference over one or the other. But, it is nice to see a company thinking ahead for its customers. Too many products are made for a one-and-done application. Any semi-permanently installed accessory is best designed with a re-usable technology.

When the kickstand is flipped out, it adds a little less than a one inch raise on the laptop backend. It still make a very noticeable difference. When closed, there is not a giant difference in the elevated height of the device.

Where you will run into trouble is form fitted laptop sleeves or accessories. I utilize a zippered sleeve for my MacBook Air on a daily basis. Because there is a little play in the Kickflip spring hinge, I must be careful when inserting the MacBook into the sleeve or it could catch. Just holding the MacBook level, the Kickflip dangles away from the bottom laptop casing. Consequently, I hold the Kickflip against the laptop while putting it away for the night. For hardshell cases, I presume the Kickflip’s gel adhesion strip would work just fine on the exterior. This would allow you to still enjoy the added angle, while keeping your MacBook protected in a clip shell.

Conclusion

Usually, I have a review prepped for the day-of launch for Bluelounge products with a positive review ready to roll. However, I took extra time with this review to determine my true feelings. Even chatting with another fellow review editor about the product helped me form an opinion. The Kickflip is a solid product, fixing a common problem for all users in a simple way. After all, that is what all Bluelounge products manage to accomplish.

The dangling Kickflip arm is the most troubled issue for me. I really wish the hinge held the arm taught against the bottom of my Air. I am only talking about 2mm of space, but it is enough to snag something and rip the device off the laptop, even from just inserting it in a sleeve. It is more of a pet peeve than an actual design flaw.

As I mentioned, everything else is great! The device is well cut and molded. The Bluelounge logo is debossed on the stand in a non-distracting way. The angle is great for typing and the gel adhesion is perfect for being re-used. Even better, the price is right on target at $17.95 for the 13″ version, and $19.95 for the 15″ version, which you cannot always say for Bluelounge accessories. Thankfully, a stand like this does not require MFi certification, which keeps licensing costs to $0, allowing a reasonably priced accessory for the consumer.

Oracle Lands $100 Million Erp Project Covering 34 Colleges

Oracle has won a $100 million ERP project that will replace legacy systems at 34 colleges in Washington state, in a deal that highlights the continued relevance of its PeopleSoft product as it tries to convince customers to adopt its next-generation Fusion Applications.

The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges is planning to implement Oracle’s PeopleSoft Campus, Human Capital Management and Financials, according to Oracle’s announcement Tuesday.

Systems integrator Ciber will work on the implementation, which is estimated to cost up to $100 million and scheduled to be delivered over the next five years, according to the project’s website.

What’s hoped for is a standardized IT platform for human resources, payroll, financials and procurement that replaces the older systems and eliminates the need for manual workarounds, a process that had become unsustainable, according to the announcement.

WSCTC is also planning to install a number of Oracle’s Fusion Analytics applications, but clearly is making a long-term bet on PeopleSoft for its core needs, and not Fusion Applications.

Oracle has said more than 400 companies have adopted Fusion Applications, which were the result of a long and expensive development process. It has promoted a modular adoption curve for Fusion, with customers adding a few modules and running them side-by-side with an existing system, rather than a rip-and-replace strategy.

While Oracle has Fusion modules targeting the same areas as PeopleSoft, it may be a while before the market sees many full-fledged Fusion ERP implementations.

“The challenge for Oracle Fusion is that it’s a broad horizontal play and PeopleSoft is heavily verticalized for service based industries,” said analyst Ray Wang, CEO of Constellation Research via email. For schools, PeopleSoft provides education-specific features for areas such as grant management, fund accounting, student scheduling and registration, he added.

Oracle’s announcement is also notable due to the project’s size and complexity, and potential for problems if the right planning and execution doesn’t happen.

PeopleSoft implementation difficulties have been at the center of a number of legal disputes, including the now-settled lawsuit between Montclair State University and Oracle over a project at the New Jersey institution.

Some in Washington state’s education community also likely haven’t forgotten problems that Washington State University had last year, when a newly installed PeopleSoft system experienced glitches, resulting in problems with financial aid disbursements at the start of the semester.

WSCTC’s size is considerable, as its schools serve 470,000 students and 21,000 employees, according to its website.

There’s also something inherently difficult about installing ERP at a school system, according to Wang.

“Campuses are in fact small cities and governments,” he said. “They are very complex from food service to student housing to course work. It’s as if you are putting together 25 different businesses onto the same system.”

The Washington schools’ project announced Tuesday in particular looks “very complicated,” said analyst Michael Krigsman, CEO of consulting firm Asuret and an expert on IT project failures.

“It’s big and involves lots of change going across many different schools,” he added. “Let me put it this way, if we were to look at the statistics of this kind of project it’s almost a certainty that it’s going to come in over budget.”

Indeed, the project is intended to “standardize business processes across the colleges with the least amount of customization and college-unique configuration as possible,” according to its website, meaning individual schools may have to make many adjustments to the way they’re used to working.

School officials “need to recognize the dangers going in,” Krigsman said. “It’s very easy to underestimate the capacity of the organization to absorb the change.”

WSCTC should err on the side of higher budgets and longer timelines, and be sure to devote plenty of attention to system testing when the go-live date nears, he added.

Two schools in the system are scheduled to go live in August 2014, followed by four deployment waves ending in July 2023, according to the project website.

Asus X751L Budget Laptop Review

Our Verdict

Larger-laptop seekers may find something to like in this 17.3-inch model. In its favour is a decent CPU, storage capacity and memory, and the screen is not the worst we’ve seen.

With its 17.3-inch widescreen display, not to mention its quite substantial 2.6 kg weight, the Asus X715L falls into the laptop category we’d call ‘desktop replacement PC’. The large glossy screen with its slightly improved image quality make it more useful as a entertainment computer, even if graphics performance may limit some gameplay. (For more, see: Best budget laptops.)

There’s a fair selection of ports around the black plastic casework. Three USB ports, all USB 3.0, is a useful number to have ranged on the left side, when many budget designs are limited to a mixture of older USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0. Alongside these an olde VGA video port plus HDMI port for modern TVs and monitors. Also here you’ll find a gigabit ethernet port and headphone jack; further up is a large exhaust vent from which you can feel a steady draught of warm air flowing.

Over on the right side of this budget laptop is a flimsy tray-load DVD±RW drive, and DC power connector for charging. To read from camera SD cards, there’s a slot under the front lip of the case. We borrowed our test laptop from eBuyer.

The lid back has a fine textile-like pattern to add some texture, with half the top deck similarly finished, and the back half in imitation brushed-aluminium plastic. Build quality overall feels rather plasticky, with plenty of flexing from the wide expanse of top deck. As another indication of the low-cost construction, we found on our sample that part of the case had become detached below the screen hinge.

There’s no user access to the innards from the laptop’s underside, nor is the 37 Wh battery easily replaceable without disassembly.

Despite the huge size and large screen, this desktop PC replacement does not carry any dedicated graphics processor, instead relying on just the Intel HD Graphics 4400 within the main processor. There is 6 GB of 1600 MHz memory, shared between the CPU and GPU parts of this processor.

For storage Asus has taken the capacious but slower choice of a 1 TB SATA disk, a conventional 5400 rpm drive. Meanwhile wireless connectivity consists of the now-standard Bluetooth 4.0, and the most basic of single-stream and single-band 11n Wi-Fi. Also see: How to choose a budget laptop.

Asus X751L review: Lab report

In terms of performance, this Asus was the second-fastest out of the six on test, if some way behind the Acer Aspire V 13 that lead the pack in most respects.

Geekbench 3 scored the X715L with 1843 and 3796 points for single- and multi-core modes. This ranks it around 35 percent slower than the benchmark’s reference model 2011 PC.

With Futuremark’s PCMark 7, and PCMark 8 (Home and Office) tests, the Asus was ranked with point scores around the mid-2000s. These are reasonable scores for a midrange laptop, dragged back more by the slightly slower storage than the quite capable processor and memory combinations.

Graphics performance results from our Windows game tests show some potential, with the usual caveat of keeping quality on or near lowest settings.

Setting Tomb Raider 2013 to Low detail and 1280 x 720 pixels, for instance, the X715L could average 43 fps with minima of 31 fps, indicating that fluid gaming is possible. Batman Arkham City proved more challenging for this laptop though, with just 32 fps average and 11 fps minima with the same low-res settings.

The large 17.3-inch display just falls short of native high-definition resolution, at 1600 by 900 pixels, and has highly reflective gloss finish best viewed in a dark room. While quite poor when compared to decent modern smartphones, its colours were conspicuously less washed out than many budget models though. The lab measurements backed this up, recording 73 percent sRGB coverage where the worst example barely exceed 50 percent. Contrast ratio of this budget TN panel was just 90:1, but it at least improves on the 80:1 we’ve also seen in this category.

With the help of the recent processor and absence of discrete graphics, the Asus proved able to run for more than just a couple of hours away from the mains. In our standard looped-video over Wi-Fi test it survived 4 hours 2 mins before expiring. Also see: Best laptops and  Best gaming laptops.
