Twitter Showing Why Topics Are Trending

Twitter is going to help users discover why certain topics are trending by adding context with a representative tweet.

The company says people should be able to immediately understand why something is trending.

With the way the trending section is designed now, it’s not always easy to understand why a topic ended up there.

Anecdotally speaking, I’ve noticed many trending topics are full of people asking why the topic is trending in the first place.

In fact, Twitter says the question “why is this trending?” was tweeted over half a million times throughout the past year.

To make it more clear why a topic is trending, a pinned tweet and description will appear alongside trends to add context.

“Throughout Twitter, we’ve been working to bring people more context on what’s happening with labels on Tweets and accounts as well as curated pages (aka Moments) and related articles on trends.

To help with this, we’re adding pinned Tweets and descriptions on trends to help explain why something is trending.”

Representative Tweets

This update is designed with the idea that all it takes is the right tweet to understand why something is trending.

Twitter calls that a representative tweet, and that’s what users will find pinned underneath certain trends.

Only “some” trends will have a representative tweet pinned to them, not all of them.

Given how fast trending topics can come and go, it would be unrealistic to promise representative tweets for all of them.

Perhaps if the whole process was automated that could be accomplished, but there’s a human curation team involved in selecting the right tweet for each trend.

Twitter is employing algorithms along with its curation team to determine how well a tweet represents a particular trend.

After Twitter’s algorithms have identified an appropriate tweet for a particular topic, its curation team will evaluate if it’s both reflective of the trend and popular.

Representative tweets are rolling out now on Twitter for iOS and Android. They will eventually be added to the browser version of Twitter as well.

Here’s an example of what the trending section looks like at the time I wrote this article:

As you can see it’s immediately evident why those particular trends are popular.

Representative tweets do not accompany most trends though. Only 4 out of the top 10 topics had an accompanying tweet when I checked.

Of course, that will vary from one moment to the next depending on what’s trending at the time.

Descriptions coming later

As mentioned, Twitter’s plan is not only to add representative tweets to trending topics, but a brief description as well.

Twitter users will have to wait a bit longer for that, as descriptions will be rolling out later.

“In the coming weeks, you should see brief descriptions added to some trends as well to help add context to the trend. Descriptions will provide straightforward, clearly sourced context around why something is trending.

Descriptions are developed by our curation team and follow their guidelines.”

Trump Versus Twitter Battle Intensifies; Could Backfire On President

Update: The White House Twitter account retweeted the tweet placed behind a warning, and Twitter has now placed the same warning on that.

The Trump versus Twitter battle has escalated, with the president signing an executive order that threatens the legal status of social networks, and Twitter applying a warning notice to a Trump tweet which was deemed to glorify violence …

We noted yesterday that Trump threatened to sign an executive order which would remove legal protections enjoyed by social networks.

The Washington Post reports that the executive order would make social networks legally liable for posts by their users, having seen what it claims is a draft version. This would mean companies like Twitter and Facebook could be sued as if they had made the posts themselves.

Currently social media companies enjoy the same protection as Internet service providers or telecoms companies – they are merely channels rather than publishers. It is that protection Trump reportedly wants to remove.

Trump versus Twitter

Trump did indeed sign a 6-page executive order, and the Washington Post report was correct that it seeks to impact section 230(c) protections.

It is the policy of the United States to foster clear ground rules promoting free and open debate on the internet. Prominent among the ground rules governing that debate is the immunity from liability created by section 230(c) of the Communications Decency Act (section 230(c)). 47 U.S.C. 230(c). It is the policy of the United States that the scope of that immunity should be clarified: the immunity should not extend beyond its text and purpose to provide protection for those who purport to provide users a forum for free and open speech, but in reality use their power over a vital means of communication to engage in deceptive or pretextual actions stifling free and open debate by censoring certain viewpoints […]

Section 230 was not intended to allow a handful of companies to grow into titans controlling vital avenues for our national discourse under the guise of promoting open forums for debate, and then to provide those behemoths blanket immunity when they use their power to censor content and silence viewpoints that they dislike. When an interactive computer service  provider removes or restricts access to content and its actions do not meet the criteria of subparagraph (c)(2)(A), it is engaged in editorial conduct. It is the policy of the United States that such a provider should properly lose the limited liability shield of subparagraph (c)(2)(A) and be exposed to liability like any traditional editor and publisher that is not an online provider.

The executive order doesn’t in way change the law, but effectively expresses a desire by the president to influence the way that law is interpreted via a rather circuitous route.

The Secretary of Commerce (Secretary), in consultation with the Attorney General, and acting through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), shall file a petition for rulemaking with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requesting that the FCC expeditiously propose regulations to clarify the interaction between subparagraphs (c)(1) and (c)(2) of section 230.

Twitter versus Trump

Twitter, for its part, applied a warning notice to a new Trump tweet, finding that it broke the rule against glorifying violence via the ‘when the looting starts, the shooting starts’ quote.

….These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2023

Twitter would normally delete a tweet which broke this rule, but has a different policy for politicians with large followings. Here, it takes the view that there is a public interest in seeing what the politician has said, and so it places the tweet behind a warning notice.

This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible.

Any law change could backfire on Trump

The New York Times:

The logic of Mr. Trump’s order is intriguing because it attacks the very legal provision that has allowed him such latitude to publish with impunity a whole host of inflammatory, harassing and factually distorted messages that a media provider might feel compelled to take down if it were forced into the role of a publisher that faced the risk of legal liability rather than a distributor that does not.

“Ironically, Donald Trump is a big beneficiary of Section 230,” said Kate Ruane, a senior legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, which instantly objected to the proposed order. “If platforms were not immune under the law, then they would not risk the legal liability that could come with hosting Donald Trump’s lies, defamation and threats.”

How To Get Verified On Twitter: A Detailed Step

Have you been a Twitter user for a long time? Garnered a decent following? And are now wondering how to get verified on Twitter? Well, you have come to the right place. After a prolonged 3-year hiatus, Twitter recently restarted its verification program and now lets users apply for verification to get the blue tick. Many Twitter users consider the company’s blue checkmark the gold standard for being a notable personality on the platform. So in this article, we will talk about the basic requirements to get verified on Twitter, the steps involved to apply for verification, and some helpful tips to easily get verified on Twitter in 2023.

Get Verified on Twitter (Updated May 2023) Twitter Verification Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for the blue tick on Twitter, your account should come under one of the following six categories:

Companies, brands, and organizations

News organizations and journalists

Sports and gaming

Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals

Some common factors across all categories include having a public Twitter account and having three or more media references within the past six months. In addition, Twitter requires companies, brands, organizations, and activists to have their follower count in the top .05% of active accounts located in the same geographic region. You can read more on Twitter’s criteria for specific categories on the company’s support page.

How to Apply for Twitter Verification

1. Open the Twitter app and tap on “Settings and Privacy” from the hamburger menu on the left. From here, tap on “Account” to access your account settings.

2. You will now see an option titled “Request Verification”. Tap on it to access the verification settings page. If you don’t see it, you will have to wait for a while because Twitter is still in the process of rolling it out. From the page that appears, choose the appropriate category for your account.

3. You should now choose a method to verify your identity. You will need to upload a government-issued ID, add an official business email address, or an official website that directly references your Twitter account. Pick the verification method that best suits you, and then submit your application.

Note: If you are concerned about your privacy, Twitter mentions that it does not get or store a copy of your government ID on an official FAQ page. The company relies on a trusted third party to “verify the authenticity of your ID” and decide whether your account is eligible for verification or not.

4. Once you have submitted the application, you will see a confirmation screen similar to the one you can see below.

Can I Reapply for Twitter Verification, If Rejected?

Now, let’s say you applied for verification on Twitter and didn’t manage to secure the blue tick on the first try. What should be your next move? Well, don’t be disheartened if you fail on the first attempt. You can reapply to get verified on Twitter.

On its official FAQ page, Twitter states you can “reapply for verification 30 days after rejection if you feel that your application should not have been rejected.” Also, there is no restriction on the number of times you can apply for verification.

That means you can essentially apply for verification every 60-odd days. We came to that number by assuming that Twitter gets back to you with your application status in 30 days, and then you have to wait another 30 days to reapply. Ultimately, you can apply to get verified on Twitter almost 5 to 6 times a year, barring that new applications are not on pause.

Best Tips to Get Verified on Twitter

Complete and Optimize Your Twitter Profile

Applicants must have filled in all the details in their profile, including the profile name, profile picture, cover photo, and bio. In the user bio, it is always wise to add how the general public should recognize you. This could be a job title or notable achievement.

For example, my colleague Anmol’s Twitter profile clearly shows his name, profile and cover photo, and the job description. It is always a good idea to include the @account name of your employer in the bio. You can also include links to your blog posts or any mentions on the web on your profile.

Make Sure Your Account is Active

Twitter requires verified accounts to be active on the platform. You must have at least logged into the account in the past six months. While you are at it, make sure you tweet regularly and engage with other Twitter users through tweet replies and DMs. It sounds like a simple tip but will greatly help you build a brand and get one step closer to getting verified on Twitter.

Build Credibility on Twitter

Confirmed Email Address and Number

You should have a confirmed email address or phone number for security reasons. In addition, we would recommend enabling two-factor authentication for Twitter to add another layer of security to your account.

Follow Twitter Rules

This might seem obvious, but Twitter requires applicants not to have had a 12-hour or 7-day lockout for violating the Twitter Rules in the past year.

How To Compress Video On Iphone Or Ipad

The iPhone and iPad can capture amazingly high definition video in 4K, 1080p, and 720p resolution, and while those movies will look fantastic they also create large file sizes. While you can always change the recording resolution of video in iOS ahead of time, another option is to compress video after the fact, thereby reducing its file size dramatically. Compressing video is helpful particularly if you want to share a video from an iPhone or iPad but you’re finding the movie file size is too large for a standard file transfer, message, or email.

We’re going to show you how to compress video on an iPhone or iPad to reduce the file size or lower the video definition quality. Compressing video is not a feature that is built into iOS natively however, so we’ll be relying on a free third party app that does the job quite well.

To be clear, this approach is taking a video file that is already recorded and stored on the iPhone or iPad and compressing it. If you want to make a smaller video file size to begin with, you can change from using 4K video capture to 1080p or 720p ahead of time, or changing the video recording frame rate at 60fps or 30fps, each of which will reduce the file size of a movie recording, but obviously that’s not helpful for changing the compression or video quality on a video that has already been captured. Thus, we’ll use Video Compressor to shrink down and reduce the file size and definition of a video in iOS.

How to Compress Videos from iPhone and iPad with Video Compressor

Grab Video Compressor for iOS on the App Store, it’s free and works on iPhone and iPad

Launch the Video Compressor app on the iPhone or iPad after you have downloaded it

Tap the video you want to compress and shrink down the file size for

At the video preview screen, select “Choose” to open that video into Video Compressor

Use the slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust the video compression based on target file size of the compressed video, the further the slider moves to the left the stronger the compression and the smaller the resulting file size of the video will be

When satisfied with the compression and target file size of the video, select “Save” in the upper right corner

Video Compressor will go to work on the targeted movie file, this can take a while depending on the size of the video selected on the iPad or iPhone

The compressed video will be saved to your iOS Camera Roll when complete

Video Compressor is very effective and you can easily shrink a very large high resolution video down to a remarkably small size. In the example above I shrunk a video to 4% of it’s original size using Video Compressor on an iPad, taking a 150mb video down to a mere 6mb. Of course this comes at a hefty cost to the video quality, since compressing video inevitably reduces the resolution and definition of any video, so use the slider and target size to suit your own use case and needs.

The ability to compress video to shrink down size and reduce quality should probably be built directly into iOS so that iPhone and iPad users can do this directly in iOS without requiring third party apps (a similar feature exists native in Mac OS video encoder tools), so perhaps we’ll get such an ability in iOS down the road too.

Keep in mind if you use iCloud (and you should) then if you try to email a very large video then you should be able to share it with Mail Drop too. And of course if you’re nearby to the person you want to share a large video with, then sending over AirDrop from an iPhone to a Mac or other device is a viable solution too.

It’s also worth pointing out that if you want to copy high definition videos from an iPad or iPhone to a computer the best way to do that is with a USB cable and direct transfer as described here, it tends to be the fastest approach that is also lossless.

Nokia Lumia 730 India Hands on Review, Camera, Features, Price, Software and Overview [Video]

Design, Display and Build

Lumia 730 looks like a very conventional Lumia smartphone with bold colors and glossy rear cover. The 4.7 inch  display form factor facilitates easy one handed usage. All hardware buttons have been placed just right, and on the whole the device looks and feels like most other mid range Lumia phones. Apart from Orange color model, Green and Grey color variants had matte finish back cover.

Processor and RAM

Processor used is 1.2 GHz quad core snapdragon 400 with 1 GB RAM. Lumia 630 sailed very smoothly on a similar chipset with half the amount of RAM, so we are optimistic that Lumia 730 will hold well in the long run even with improved resolution. Windows Phone 8 is much more resource efficient as compared to Android, so don’t judge the hardware from Android perspective.

Camera and Internal Storage

The 5 MP front unit has a 25 mm wide angle lens to capture more in a single frame. This actually worked pretty well in our initial testing. Selfies also looked sharper. A camera app has also been added to further aid this cause. You can edit selfies and add filters, make yourself look slimmer, etc. The app also allows you to shoot selfies from the rear camera.

Internal storage is 8 GB (6 GB Free) and you can further avail up to 128 GB MicroSD card expansion. Windows Phone 8.1 allows you to add apps to SD card, and thus storage shouldn’t be a concern for average user.

Nokia Lumia 730 Camera Video Sample 1080p at 30 fps User Interface and Battery

Lumia 730 will feature Windows 8.1 with Lumia Denim update pre-installed out of the box. So now you can make folders on home screen which is as vibrant as before, thanks to the live tiles. Other denim update features include customized home screen or App corners, Snooze time, SMS Merge, etc. Windows Phone App store now lists over 320,000 apps and most of the popular apps are already included in this list.

Battery capacity is 2220 mAh which will render 600 hours of standby time and 17 hours of talk according to Nokia. Battery backup has never been an issue on Lumia phones and Lumia 730 isn’t expected to be an exception.

Lumia 730 Photo Gallery

Since all major OEMs have started churning out selfie centric devices, Lumia 730 arrives at an opportune moment. Nokia has long been appreciated for its superior imaging hardware and Lumia 730 has the potential to allure those prioritizing selfies over other stuff. If you compare the price to its two main rivals – Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime and Sony Xperia C3, the Lumia 730 has been priced right.
