Design

The game is full of bright colors and entertaining music. The graphics are cartoony, but not cutesy (although those spiky bats are pretty adorable). The background is colorful and changes with each new height you reach. The soundtrack is perfectly matched for the intensity of the game. It almost sounds like you are watching the action scenes in ET: The Extra Terrestrial.

As you travel up to the tallest reaches of the tower, you will complete achievements, like “Split apart 25 monsters,” or “Survive for 25 seconds without dashing.”

Gameplay

When you take off from your rocket for the first time, pay attention to the launch meter on the right. When it reaches the brightest red section at the very top, tap the screen to take off. If you hit a perfect launch, you’ll go higher.

You’ll want to go as high as possible because, eventually, the lava will catch up to you. The faster you go, the less likely it is that the lava will invade your territory.

The knight only sits atop the rocket for a very short period of time. Then, it is your job to keep him in the air by splitting monsters in two. The monsters float by horizontally and you can aim below by tilting your device. When you are directly above your enemy, tap the screen to attack.

If you miss your attack, you will fall, but you won’t die. Your trusty rocket is just out of view below and will help you travel back up. You will never suffer consequences of falling. However, falling does slow you down and the lava gets closer.

When you attack multiple monsters without missing, you will generate combo points that will end up triggering your dash. Dashing gets you a few extra meters above the lava that is quickly rising to your location.

When you break through a wooden floor, you are in the room of a kidnapped princess. Rescuing princesses yield great rewards. There are 10 princesses, each with a different bonus that is unlocked when you save them.

Between each game, you can buy upgrades to your weapons, armor, speed and rocket launch with the coins you’ve collected during your vertical runs. You can also upgrade bonuses, like increased luck, improved attack speed, better speed boost, and less loss of speed when falling. The potion section is expensive, but it unlocks new potions that will help you in the game. For example, the Haste potion boosts your attack speed and Harden makes you invulnerable.

The more equipped you are in battle, the better your chances are to reach the next princess and unlock new bonuses. There is also a boss to fight at the very end of the game. However, I have not made it far enough to battle the ultimate foe. I’m about halfway there right now.

The Good The Bad

Value

Knightmare Tower costs $2.99. In my opinion, that is too expensive. The game is comparable to endless runners like Temple Run and Agent Dash, which are $0.99 and free respectively. That being said, there are no in-app purchases in this game, so you won’t ever end up spending more money than you planned.

This game would be better suited at $1.99. But think of it this way, the development company, Juicy Beast, is a team of only four people. So, that extra dollar is going toward an independent development company who is just trying to put food on the table.

Conclusion

If you like endless runner games, this is a great new addition to the genre. While it follows many of the traditional gameplay themes, like unlocking items and upgrading your runner, it is unique in some ways because most endless runners don’t focus on attacking enemies in order to keep moving. Teamwork Takes Teachers To The Moon

This summer, I got the opportunity to visit NASA Kennedy Space Center through a generous grant from the General Electric Fund and the National Science Teachers Association. The partnership sponsored around a hundred of us to go to Cocoa Beach, Florida, and partake in a series of intense professional development sessions on campus. As a math teacher, I wasn’t exactly sure what my purpose was there, but I knew two things: I wanted a rocket shuttle to take home, and I wanted to pretend to be an astronaut when I went back home.

Sadly, I couldn’t take a shuttle home.

Instead, I partook in one of the most relevant PD sessions I ever attended. The premise of the workshops was to build rovers with kits and use all available tools to create a robot that would park in one tight spot. Here, I share some of my learning from that week.

Expertise Should Always Be Valued

Our party consisted of two groups: returning teachers who had already worked on these projects last year and new teachers who hadn’t the slightest idea what they would be doing. I was in the former group. During our first meeting, we spent time building our rovers and making sure they worked. My pair — another math teacher and I — had a hard time just remembering how to put the pieces together to form a rover. After that, however, things went much faster.

Why? Because our test to make sure that our rover worked was to make it drive a few feet, turn left, drive another couple of feet, turn right, drive another few feet, then stop. This involved a bit of angle measurement, and programming. While my partner and I weren’t master rover-builders, we knew our way around a ruler and a protractor. Within an hour, our rover passed the prerequisites and was ready for prime time.

Embrace the Unknown

While the veteran group worked on their rovers, the new group worked on scanning a surface and creating a map of a given square space. The purpose for creating this map was to get the rover to a given point based on the mapmakers’ accuracy. Obviously, the new group had to develop a method for getting as much information as they could by using their rover’s scanners to calculate altitudes and slopes. My pair had to depend on the map we were given — and nothing else.

In other words, we had to see what the rover saw, and work through its point of view.

In many ways, this taught us to embrace the unknown. So many variables go into actual space exploration that we can only estimate based on the information given to us. As learners, we could only control what we knew given the tools we had: a rover, a calculator, a ruler and an eight-bit map.

Playing to Everyone’s Strengths

The temptation for the returning teachers was to take over the project and make the new teachers stand aside. However, they had just acquired a set of skills: programming. They knew how to create loops and send commands in the program comfortably. All they needed was a plan on how to approach this “map” and the mathematics behind it. Naturally, my pair took the lead and started plugging away. We narrated everything as we did it so that everyone else could jump in and contribute when necessary. When we had a refined diagram, the new teachers jumped in and programmed the robot with little help from us.

We played to everyone’s strengths in the group and made sure that they all felt invited.

From there, we set the robot on its mission. Needless to say, within a few minutes, we got it to work consistently. We’d laid out a plan, and now everyone felt comfortable with our plan.

Most importantly, we all felt like engineers. We didn’t “win” anything for having completed the project first or second. The fact that we did a simplified version of what engineers and rocket scientists do for a living gave us enough exhilaration. While other groups had different results, I noticed that, when we stuck to a few key principles for completing these projects, we all felt like winners.

But it still would have been nice to drive down Broadway in the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Oh well.

Many architects are working on deeply detailed projects on vertical farming, and although the number of applied ones is low, it is possible to reach many vertical farming structures designed with all their details. It is also possible to encounter the concept of “Agritecture” for this approach that considers agriculture and architecture together.

Soilless farming; hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics

Vertical farming is a technological greenhouse system that creates a suitable habitat for each desired plant, aiming to increase productivity while using less water and soil. In this closed system, optimum nutrients and rays are provided for each plant, eliminating the need for toxic herbicides and pesticides and ensuring reliable food production.

The hydroponic system involves growing plants without soil and using nutrient-rich water instead. Even though water is essential for this system, it requires less water than traditional farming methods, making it more sustainable and cost-effective. Additionally, the use of LED lighting allows farmers to grow crops year-round in any climate, providing a consistent source of fresh produce for consumers.

Generally, the plants are placed in a growing medium. The process begins with an air pump that oxygenates the water-nutrient-rich solution. First, water is sent through a pump to the highest row of plants and then the natural force of gravity enables its flow to the subsequent rows. After the water is released, it runs through the soil and contacts plant roots. These roots absorb the vital nutrients from the water, helping to nourish the plants for healthy growth. The used water then goes back to the tank for reuse.

The general operation works similarly in all three systems. The nutrition of the water used in aquaponics is obtained from a pond with fish, while the nutrients in the reused water are fortifying the fish, and mutual benefit is provided. The difference between aeroponics and hydroponics is; In hydroponics, water reaches the roots as it flows, while in aeroponics, water is sprayed directly onto the roots.

All three systems are widely used on various farms. While operating as a soilless and water-dependent system, it provides benefits in resource consumption compared to traditional agriculture.

When Astroneer releases in early 2024, it will invite a lot of comparisons to Minecraft. Both are large, open-world survival games where players terraform a vast space to find resources and, eventually, build civilization. But System Era Softworks, the team behind the space exploration game, has a much bigger universe in mind, and if it can deliver on its promise it could leave Minecraft in the blocky, angular dust.

Astroneer’s concept is, of course, very similar to Minecraft. But instead of being a lone wandering character in the wilderness, you’re a lone astronaut on a planet. Here’s where things get bigger: The planet is one of many, and you could also be one of many.

It also comes from a different place: one that’s not about sharp polygons.

Like a lot of indy games, the idea began with a core design concept and only a couple of people–in this case just one. “Astroneer came from an art project I was working on in my spare time,” says creator Adam Bromell. “I wanted to tell the story of an astronaut, alone on an infinitely distant planet, where [the astronaut is] the key to human survival but [she] would have to eventually sacrifice [her] life to do be that savior.”

As the idea developed, team members were added. “We were all convinced immediately that building Astroneer is something we had to do,” he says. “It’s a video game we’ve wanted to play for years, and we’re going to be the ones to make it.”

Since the beginning, Bromell has wanted Astroneer to be a game that finds the perfect balance “between simulation and fantasy.” Player creativity is important, he says, so he and the other creators actively took fictional liberties and introduced things like terrain deformation and 3D interfacing.

The idea of walking the line between survival and building isn’t a new one, but interplanetary survival is definitely a new frontier. And terrain manipulation, as it’s seen in the trailer, looks like it will be an entirely new way of building.

The game’s terraforming has a completely different design aesthetic: As a loose metaphor, think airbrush instead of chisel. You’ll be sculpting viscous clay of terrain rather than stacking it.

This also means things are a bit more cartoonish. But Bromell says that doesn’t interfere with the real side of the equation. “We’re fine with the terrain being manipulated in a way that can feel a bit magical or the fact that an Astroneer can easily lift things three times his size so long as it supports the overall fantasy of being an Astronaut exploring and exploiting planets, far away from humanity.”

The other thing you may have noticed? No interface. Bromell says so far, “We have added no flat fullscreen UI interface. No menus or text to read. Everything happens in game and is a direct result of which objects you’re interfacing with. Since we are a third person game, this completely frees you to make quick modifications to the world while still feeling like you’re in the experience.”

One of the more common questions that gets asked when a new game goes for vintage aesthetics rather than realism, is intent. Bromell says the team “established early on that what we love the most about this low poly, geometric art style was that it easily complements the way we wanted to build the game.”

The Astroneer team, sort of like the guys from Minecraft originally, was sacrificing the potential of high-end graphics to get things done. Textures can take up a lot of time and manpower, and simplifying the aesthetics means more time can be devoted to mechanics. “We can quickly come up with the concept for something, spend an hour or so modeling it out, and get it in the game instantly.”

When likening Astroneer to comparable titles like Minecraft, Pikmin, or the upcoming No Man’s Sky, Bromell is sure that Astroneer fits the genre. “Exploration and the sandbox nature of the game are intrinsically linked as they are part of a larger game loop. A player must build new equipment to survive on these alien planets and to find the resources to build bigger bases and vehicles they need to venture out further.”

As for how the game will work, it’s clear that the player will have to resource hunt, terraform, and worry about things like oxygen. But he or she will also have to worry about different planets and their own unique challenges. “[Team member] Jacob has spent a considerable amount of time in ensuring that the technology we have gives each planet its own identity and challenges while also encouraging players to define what problems they’d like to tackle or what goals they’d like to have.”

But the biggest thing the game may draw in players with is cooperative play. “Friends who play together will be able to work together in the same physical space, solving problems together and interacting directly,” says Bromell.

That’s not new to survival games, but here’s where it gets interesting: indirect cooperation. “Eventually, players will want to split up and work together while on different sides of a planet or even on different planets. Because the game allows players to seamlessly travel to or send resources to other planets, this creates a wide variety of emergent gameplay scenarios, such as when one player is running low on resources and must rely on [his or her] distant teammate to organize a resupply.”

You’ll just have to hope there’s someone there to help, if you need it.

“Many games offer seamless, traversable planetary systems,” says Bromell. “And many others offer synchronous co-op, but Astroneer marries the two in a way that creates a host of new, compelling shared experiences.”
