With all the new iPhones officially out in the world, you might expect Apple to take a breather when it comes to announcing products until 2023. The company has one more event on the books, however, and you can watch the livestream above. You can also keep scrolling for a live recap as well as some crucial context to help make sense of Tim Cook and company’s big news.

We’re fully expecting today’s news to center solidly around the Apple Silicon program we heard about in June of 2023. Apple is transitioning its computers off of Intel chips and onto hardware developed in the secret—and photogenic—lab we keep seeing during these live events.

The music starts and the first lyrics we hear are “I’ve been on my own for a minute.” This event is clearly a break-up song with other hardware manufacturers.

Tim Cook starts the presentation bragging about all the new Apple products we’ve gotten this year. I’ve reviewed a lot of them already, including the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPad Air.

This event is all about the Mac itself, though. Cook claims that the segment has grown considerably this year.

Apple reminds everyone that it has been making Silicon for a decade in devices like the iPhone and the iPad. The timeline for transitioning still remains “the next couple years.”

The first chip made for the Mac is called the M1.

Apple’s first Mac-specific chip is called the M1. Apple

The M1 is a system on a chip with a unified memory architecture. All parts of the system can access data on the memory without having to copy it. It’s built on the 5nm platform. Apple says the M1 has four of the “world’s fastest CPU cores” as part of eight total. The other four are built for maximum efficiency.

The M1 claims to have the record for best CPU performance per watt.

Intel negged in a graph. Apple

M1 has integrated graphics, which typically means weak graphics performance in the laptop world. Apple says this is the most powerful 8-core GPU so far.

Apple claims the world’s fastest integrated graphics. Apple

There’s a 16-core Neural Engine onboard as well as a security enclave. Yup, that’s a whole Apple system.

Apple says that MacOS Big Sur has been built to support the Apple Silicon chips, so the systems are already ready for the new hardware, at least in-part. The presentation is heavy into trying to emphasize how smooth the Apple apps and software will work on Apple hardware.

Everyone in this presentation has said the word “core” many times in various circumstances.

Now we’re getting into the new kinds of apps. The most compatible apps will be called Universal Apps, that support both Intel and Apple Silicon versions of the software. Apps that aren’t universal will use a new version of Apple’s Rosetta software, which helps translate your software to work on the new hardware. Adobe will roll out Lightroom’s universal app starting next month and Photoshop is coming early next year.

Predictably, M1 devices will run iPhone and iPad apps natively. No real surprise there. Now we’re getting into the hardware.

The new iPad Air is the first to get the M1.

The new MacBook Air will get the M1 chip first. Apple

Apple says the CPU is 3.5x faster than the previous version. Graphics performance will be up to 5x better. You can now edit multiple 4K Pro Res video streams at the same time. Apple says the new Air is faster than 98 percent of PCs sold last year.

There’s no fan inside the MacBook Air, so it’s totally silent. Apple claims you’ll get 15 hours of wireless web usage and it will now get twice the battery life while video conferencing compared to the previous edition.

The new HD webcam gets access to Apple’s latest image signal processor, which should hopefully make it look better than its current sad state.

Despite the upgrades, it still starts at $999.

Here’s a look at the MBA upgrades. Apple

M1 is also coming to the Mac MIni

The new Mac Mini is getting the M1 chip Apple

Apple says the new Mac Mini is 5x faster than the best-selling PC on the market, which is an HP. The Mac Mini is also 1/10th the size. There’s a fan inside the Mini unlike the MacBook Air.

Here’s a look at the back of the Mac Mini for its ports.

The Mac Mini has ports. Apple

The new Mini starts at $699, which is $100 cheaper than the previous version according to Apple. You get 3x the CPU performance and 6x the graphics performance.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro is also getting the M1.

The MBP is also getting the M1 chip Apple

The 13-inch MBP is the most popular in the line. Apple says the new machine is 3x faster than the most popular machine in its class (3-pound laptops). Like the Mini, it has a fan-based cooling system inside so it won’t be totally silent

Apple promises up 17 hours of web browsing and up to 20 hours of video playback on a single charge, which is the longest battery life on a Mac so far.

It still starts at $1,299.

Here are the new 13-inch MacBoook Pro upgrades. Apple

All three new Macs are up for pre-order today and they start shipping next week. Big Sur comes out this Thursday. It will be interesting to see what kind of compatibility hiccups happen in the early stages of the transition procss.

How To Develop Content Blog Standards

If you’ve seen one blog, you’ve seen them all… unless. Once in a while, you’ll stumble across a blog that breaks the mold of the masses. It is unique, engaging, and entertaining. It is a blog that standouts, and deserves the attention. But what makes this blog a beautiful outlier?

Over 70 million blog posts are published every month on WordPress. That’s a lot of content, but a lot of the content looks and sounds the same. Few real, authentic blogs exist in the saturated digital environment.

Maybe it’s because this replicated copy is the best version for blogs to currently live within?

Definitely not.

I equate most blog standards to being like sheep — aimlessly following the pack.

However, let’s say you are hearing the alarm bells sounding off. You recognize the need to reinvigorate your blog with a shot of individuality. Here’s your guide to resurrecting your blog from the crips of conformity.

The Writing Standards

First and foremost, we need to examine the writing that makes up your blog. This is the bread and butter of your blog, and it must be good. No matter how “pretty” or “cool” your blog looks, if the writing is below adequate, then it isn’t worth a whole lot.

Users visit blogs to be entertained and informed. If you’re writing isn’t achieving that, you need to go back to the drawing board.

Welcome to the drawing board! Let’s discuss some jumping-off points to help you craft copy that keeps the reader’s eyes open.

Add Value

Be Honest

Your blog should be a representation of you and/or your organization. Be true to what makes you unique. Don’t curtail to industry voices and trends that don’t align with what makes you, you. You’re going to feel better about what you produce, and in the long run, it will pay off with a more in-tune audience.

Focus on Your Niche

Blogs that too widely place their attention can confuse audiences, and dampen growth results. Ensure that your writing falls under the umbrella of what your niche entails.

Dedicate Time

Good writing takes time and critical thinking. And research, research, research. Don’t wing it. The average blog post takes 3 ½ hours to write. Why? Research, drafting, editing. Rome wasn’t built overnight. Your blog shouldn’t be a quick task done at the 11th hour.

Try reading a book with misplaced chapters. It ain’t going to work, friend. Even though blogs are 1/1000 the length of a novel, they still require an outline. Beautiful words are lost in bad sentences. Don’t ruin your writing with disorganized story construction.

Paragraphs and Word Length

Short paragraphs read quicker and easier. Use white space, it feels better to the eyes. Keep margins short, and don’t let text run all over the screen. Ensure your blogs are always hitting at least 250 words, preferably around 1,000.

Consistent Voice

Audiences attach themselves to blogs because they like it. Plain and simple. But often a consistent voice has a lot to do with this. People enjoy knowing what they are getting. We are creatures of habit. Pick speaking voice, and run with it, Forrest!

The Design Standards

Okay, now design. A blog should provide the reader with an experience, not just some text on a screen. Think about your favorite book. Odds are you enjoyed that story because you felt like you were gaining some type of real-world experience from it.

A blog should immerse the reader into the content, supplemented by visual aids. In doing so, we are elevating engagement and interactivity. Here are some elements you should consider when developing your blog standards.

It is important to commit to a theme and aesthetic for your blog. In some ways uniformity is good, this being one of those times.

Images and Video

Images and videos are proven to enhance user experience and blog engagement. Creating and incorporating these types of assets add an additional dimension to a blog, and also help boost SEO favorability.

GIFs, Animations, and More

Depending on your industry and tone of voice, you will determine what custom assets best fit. However, a blog should consider incorporating GIFs, animations, memes, infographics, and more in order to highlight important information.

Custom Headers

Having custom, consistent headers at the top of your blog helps visually stimulate readers from the get-go. It introduces the blog topic and often sets the tone for what is to come. These headers help draw readers in and differentiate yourself from other blogs.

Custom CTAs

Arguably the most important aspect to your blog is the CTA. You’re writing a blog for a reason, what is it? Collect newsletter sign-ups? Demo requests? Scheduled appointments? Whatever it is, having a custom CTA helps better focus the reader’s attention to this call-out, and convert better.

Android Vs. Iphone Is No Easy Call

Google’s Android mobile operating system proved a formidable rival to the wildly popular iPhone in a recent real-world test.

Trying out a Motorola Droid 2 on Verizon Wireless alongside my own AT&T iPhone 3GS over the past few weeks, I found Android a tempting alternative to the iPhone platform, though there were surprises on both sides.

The most obvious additional feature the Droid 2 has is its physical keyboard, which feels well-made, with a nice sandy texture and good-sized keys. Yet it takes some getting used to. Whereas a virtual keyboard like the iPhone’s can redraw itself in several modes, the Droid’s physical keyboard requires an ALT key to activate numerals and some punctuation marks. Those marks appear in blue on the black keys, and at handheld scale, it can be hard to tell the punctuation marks apart. The phone also has a virtual keyboard, but although it’s well-sized in landscape mode, the Droid’s narrower screen becomes a liability when it’s flipped to portrait mode. Then, the virtual keys become too small to easily use.

The Droid also falls short in its general screen design — out of the box, at least. The seven panels of the homescreen were cluttered with large, ungainly widgets along with some smaller icons. In a “drawer” that’s pulled up by touching an arrow at the bottom of the screen were several dozen more icons. The iPhone’s screen, by contrast, has just one level, unless the user adds folders. It also comes with far fewer built-in application icons, and those icons are bigger and more attractive than the ones on the Droid.

Another tool available for use with Android 2.2, called Chrome to Phone, also is unlike anything in the iPhone, and it might be useful occasionally. With a free app on the phone and a plug-in for Google’s Chrome browser, users can send a Web page or a map from a PC-based browser to the phone. There is no tool yet for sending items the other way.

Network performance is one trait for which Verizon is often praised and AT&T frequently criticized, and for the moment at least, Verizon’s touted coverage isn’t available with an iPhone. In informal testing in San Francisco — ground zero for AT&T-bashing — the Droid 2 did experience a better online experience and fewer dropped calls overall. However, this wasn’t always the case. Some subway stations with usable AT&T coverage were without any Verizon signal at all. In addition, a drive halfway across California into rural and mountainous areas showed Verizon stronger in some locations and AT&T in others.

In ringtones, the Droid is heavy with electronic and classic-rock bits, many of which sound outdated even in terms of quality, like old polyphonic ringers. The iPhone’s selection won’t satisfy anyone who really wants to rock, but its tones are by far the better in quality. However, when it comes to wallpaper, Android has taken a step ahead of the iPhone’s colorful, static screens: It offers animated wallpaper. This means the background image on the Droid 2’s homescreen can change from blue sky at midday, to dim light at dusk, to darkness and stars at night. It’s the kind of stylish, ingenious move that might have been expected of a company like … Apple.
