The Apple v. Samsung trial in August was a real treasure trove of information that gave us a peek behind the curtain and into Apple’s design process. But what about some of Apple’s early product designs that never came to fruition? Industrial designer Hartmut Esslinger and his upcoming new book titled ‘Design Forward’ offers an interesting glimpse into Apple products that never were.
In it, you’ll find ten original photographs depicting designs for various computers Apple was researching at the time, including one for a tablet and another for a phone hybrid called the Macphone. We’ve got images right after the break…
Designboom (via The Verge) offers several excerpts and photos from the book. Hartmut throughout his career worked with the likes of Wega, Louis Vuitton, Sony, SAP and of course Apple and Steve Jobs.
Apple considered the MacPhone in 1984, right before the Macintosh was launched. The Snow White 2 concept from 1982 would express ‘americana’ and was aimed at “reconnecting high-tech design with classical american design statements”. a mysterious destination”. It would eventually become the winner.
The ‘Baby Mac’ concept from 1985 was Hartmut’s “ticket for a voyage towarda mysterious destination”. It would eventually become the winner.
Frog Design, a San Francisco-based design shop, was established way back in 1969. The company started out as ‘Esslinger Design’ when Hartmut Essslinger opened a studio in the Black Forest of Germany along with Andreas Haug and Georg Spreng “to promote the concept of emotional design”.
In 1982, the firm partners with Apple to help create the Apple IIc, which was later inducted into the design collection of the Whitney Museum and got voted Time Magazine’s “Design of the Year”. Frog’s Apple IIc design paved the way for Apple’s Snow White design language.
The official web site offers a quick backgrounder on the Apple partnership:
It was precisely this mix that appealed to top executive Steve Jobs back in 1981, when he began searching for the elusive magic that would give Apple a market edge. Back then, computing was a sea of anonymous beige boxes. Jobs combed the world for a strategy-focused design company – and found it in Esslinger’s team.
A multimillion-dollar deal was struck, enticing Esslinger Design to establish a California office. A few years later, the Apple IIc was launched with great fanfare. The design was named “Design of the Year” by Time Magazine and inducted into the permanent collection at the Whitney Museum of Art. Apple’s revenue soared from $700 million in 1982 to $4 billion in 1986.
With the move to Northern California, they changed the name to Frog Design, an acronym of Federal Republic Of Germany.
I like their work on the Apple IIc, but surely am glad as hell Apple axed the Macphone and canned that tablet design. Of course, Apple never really gave up on tablet computing.
In 1987, the company unveiled the Newton MessagePad pocket computer (Jonathan Ive designed the second-generation MessagePad110, seen below). Even though it had handwriting recognition and was in many ways ahead of its time, that device was short-lived as Jobs axed it right upon his return from exile in 1996.
Nearly a decade later, Jobs was toying with a prototype touchscreen surface that he could type on.
He’d later share an anecdote at the WSJ’s D8 conference of how one of the team members showed him the rubber-band scrolling and immediately he thought to himself: “Oh my God, we could make a phone out of this”.
“When we got our wind back and thought we could take on something next, we pulled the tablet off the shelf, took everything we learned from the phone and went to work on the tablet”, he said.
The rest is history.
Designboom has a bunch of images of other strange Apple products that never were so hit the source link for more.
Design Forward is available for pre-order from Amazon and is set to ship January 16, 2013.

Early Christmas For Apple In Last 48 Hours
Finding Apple unlikely to outfit 5G modem in the iPhones for at least in the next two years, the detractors had been repeatedly taking a potshot. The so-called “Future of Smartphone” will be the slowest to embrace 5G, lacks the teeth to compete with Android devices, has already peaked, and what not.
As if this much of bashing was not enough, Samsung–Apple’s biggest rival–came out all guns blazing. The South Korean multinational conglomerate launched the world’s first foldable smartphone “Galaxy Fold” ($1,980) amid plenty of fanfare. While almost everyone was gushing at the smartphone and praising Samsung for ushering the industry to a new direction, Huawei came up with even bigger surprise–HUAWEI Mate X ($2600) foldable smartphone that can bend outwardly.
Sudden Turn Of Events Has Given iPhone A Clear Advantage to Stay In The Hunt… And How!You guessed it! These two things were good enough for the critics to lambast Apple, saying the tech giant has gone past its prime and become only a follower.
As it has always been the case, Apple was quietly listening to the entire narrative, watching the whole game from behind the scene.
Clearly, the iPhone maker was on the back foot, struggling to hold fort on the sticky wicket…
The Remarkable Deal With QualcommSuddenly, a turnaround happened on April 16th, 2023 when no one had even thought of it. Even as the jury for their trial was about to take charge, Apple and Qualcomm dropped all the lawsuits and signed a six-year global patent licensing agreement (which could be further extended for another two years). Moreover, Qualcomm agreed to supply modems for future iPhones.
“Apple and Qualcomm have agreed to settle all ongoing lawsuits, putting an end to the blockbuster legal battle. As part of the settlement, Apple will make a payment to Qualcomm for an undisclosed amount. The companies have reached a six-year global patent licensing agreement, which may be extended for another two years. They’ve also agreed for Qualcomm to supply parts to Apple for multiple years, which likely means its modems will once again appear in the iPhone.” The Verge
Yeah, you can argue that many Android devices are already shipping with 5G and they are ahead in the race. But, is 5G network gotten ready yet? Nope! And boy, it’s gonna take plenty of time for it to be visible everywhere–let alone being fully into action. So, why go for something that’s not ready for the mainstream yet?
I hope Samsung will no longer blast the download speed of the iPhone and call its Galaxy smartphones the real deal (no pun intended)!
“The ad, titled ‘Ingenious: Speed’ is set within a bright retail environment clearly meant to reflect an Apple store. It starts off with a woman waiting to be helped by an employee. Quickly, the worker, complete with an Apple logo t-shirt, approaches to make a sale.
When asked about iPhone X’s download speeds, the employee boasts they are faster than those of iPhone 8. She responds with apprehension, looking for confirmation that iPhone X is not as fast at downloading data as the Galaxy S9. Her query renders the employee speechless, with his only response being unending, “Ummmm…” Apple Insider
The Huge Screen Breaking Issue of Samsung Galaxy FoldEven as the tech tubers had just caught a glimpse of the review units of Samsung Galaxy Fold, the so-called future of foldable smartphone had started to peel off on April 18th, 2023. Worst, the flexible device seems to have already been broken… It looks too cheap to be called the future of foldable!
“Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said his display is busted, though he noted he took off a “protective layer/film,” Samsung says shouldn’t be removed. YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) encountered a similar issue after he removed the film, thinking it was a screen protector. So, you probably shouldn’t take that layer off if you’re buying a Galaxy Fold — there’s a warning on the wrap that urges you to leave the film in place.” Engadget
The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in. Hard to know if this is widespread or not. chúng tôi Mark Gurman (@markgurman) April 17, 2023
When all hell was expected to loose on Apple, Man… it’s the other way around! While the iPhone maker seems to have a surprisingly great deal with Qualcomm at a time when all odds were stacked against it, Samsung which not too long ago was having a wonderful time has revisited a terrible situation—that will have a far-reaching impact than Galaxy S7 blast issue that had rocked the entire sphere.
Oh…wait a minute…
Finding Samsung’s much-hyped Galaxy Fold falling apart so cheaply like a pack of cards, I don’t think the folks who were lining up for the foldable smartphones would even dare to embrace the fold that’s priced so highly around $2000 and even beyond!
And what about Huawei, Xiaomi and almost everyone else who seem to have jumped on the bandwagon called “Foldables”? Well, if I’m not wrong, they may have already lost their sleep. After all, charging ridiculously high for the smartphone that’s made of cheap plastic is ridiculous.
Hopefully, all the airy trumpet about innie, outie as well as Apple’s inability to embrace 5G will vaporize now–at least for the time being!
Scared by huge screen issue of Galaxy Fold, prospective buyers would want to wait until the tech is ready for foldables. Apple being known as the most trusted player in the industry, most people (except for the hobbyists) would now want to give a shot to the foldable iPhone before sailing into the all-new territory that looks fraught with risk.
And for that, people can happily wait for a year or two–impatiently and passionately. After all, only a truly foldable smartphone can showcase the way forward. Indeed, the iPhone is back again and so is Apple…

Oppo Find N Release Date, Design, Specs And More
After months of rumours, the company showed off its first-ever folding phone, which surprised in a few areas by deviating from the framework set out by rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.
When does the Oppo Find N launch?Oppo launched the Find N in the second half of December 2023, following last year’s annual Inno Day event, which is often used to showcase the company’s burgeoning technologies and, sometimes, tease forthcoming products.
For overseas fans curious about the Find N’s potential arrival in markets beyond Oppo’s native China, at launch, it seemed that the foldable would remain a regional exclusive. However, fast-forward to April 2023 and a report from Pricebaba suggests that the Find N might make its way to international markets, but rebranded as a OnePlus foldable.
As per the report, OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau was apparently “directly involved in the development of Find N” giving greater credibility to the idea of the phone’s hardware being only lightly modified and rebadged in order to appeal to fans of the brand – a strategy that OnePlus has previously employed with various other Oppo phones.
It should be noted that the Find N is different to the rollable Oppo X 2023, which is an official concept phone. That device featured a revolutionary scrolling display, powered by motors that expand the display surface into place.
How much does the Oppo Find N cost?At launch, the Find N shattered expectations by undercutting even its most aggressively-priced rival, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold, which launched in China back in April 2023, for just CNY¥9,999.
Here’s the Oppo Find N’s Chinese launch pricing from December 2023:
8GB RAM/256GB = ¥7,699 (approximately £910/€1,070/US$1,210/INR₹92,030/AUD$1,670)
12GB RAM/512GB = ¥8,999 (approximately £1,065/€1,255/US$1,415/INR₹107,595/AUD$1,985)
For reference, here’s how much the other most prominent foldables on the market cost at launch:
What features does the Oppo Find N have? While the Find N adopts the familiar book-style vertical folding form factor, used by the likes of the Huawei Mate X2, Mi Mix Fold and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3, it sports an unorthodox aspect ratio for the style; resulting in a more conventional smartphone silhouette when closed.
The main 7.1in display’s 8.4:9 aspect ratio is supposedly better suited to gaming and enjoying media than the narrower, taller forms found on some of its competitors. Oppo’s also optimised its software to allow for split-screen multitasking using a two-finger swipe-down gesture on the dynamic 120Hz LTPO display (meaning it can scale its refresh rate right down to 1Hz, to conserve power).
Oppo calls the hinge it’s built for the Find N the ‘Flexion Hinge’ and – similarly to the Z Fold series – it’s rated for some 200,000 folds/unfolds. The display is designed to naturally bunch and tuck up inside the Find N when closed (similarly to Motorola’s Razr 5G), resulting in a gap between the two edges of the closed display that’s apparently 80% less prominent – according to TUV Rheinland (an independent testing and quality assurance body) – “compared to other devices”; while the crease when the Find N is open and flat is meant to be less noticeable too.
The Flexion Hinge can also be positioned at any point within a range of 50 to 120 degrees in what Oppo has called ‘FlexForm Mode’. In this mode, you can use the partially folded Find N to both see the camera’s viewfinder and review shots you’ve just taken, simultaneously, set up a 4K HD time-lapse – tripod-free, type notes more conveniently and take video calls hands-free.
Here’s the Oppo Find N’s full spec sheet:
ColorOS 12
Ceramic camera plate
Gorilla Glass Victus back panel
Side-mounted fingerprint sensor/power key
Face unlock
Stereo speakers w/ Dolby Atmos
X-axis linear motor
Bluetooth 5.2
5G
NFC
USB-C
4500mAh battery
33W SuperVOOC wired charging (55% in 30 minutes, 100% in 70 minutes)

10W reverse wireless charging
275 grams
132.6mm x 73mm x 15.9mm (closed)
Colours: Starry Night (black), Cloud (white), Floating Light (iridescent purple)
Despite its foldable form factor, the Find N’s Gorilla Glass Victus body adopts an aesthetic reminiscent of the company’s 2023 Find X3 Pro flagship, demonstrating Oppo’s “fluid curve design language,” while the phone’s rear triple camera module is protected by a ceramic plate.
Check out episode 95 of our weekly podcast Fast Charge, where we discussed the initial official reveal of the Oppo Find N:
One other thing we have seen from Oppo recently is how it will approach foldable technology going forward, with the company showing off another foldable concept phone at the fourth China International Industrial Design Expo, in December 2023.
The device shown below uses three foldable screens, attached by hinges, that allow the user to unfurl the display to the height they prefer. There’s also a stylus contained within one of the segments to facilitate note-taking and other pen-based tasks.
The above concept phone is obviously still far from a reality, but it could be a sign of things to come from future iterations of the Find N.

Apple Patents Detail Apple Watch Bands With Skin Texture Authentication And More
Apple has a lot of different patent applications out there, detailing, at least in part, technologies and ideas the company is working on, has worked on, or is considering working on some day. Today has yet another example, this time for the Apple Watch.
Patently Apple has the report this week, detailing new patents that Apple has submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The company has been granted the patents by the entity, detailing ideas like an LED progress indicator built into the strap, and, perhaps even more excitingly, a skin texture authentication feature.
The first of the granted patents (pictured above) deals with that authentication feature. This is a band for the smartwatch that has a built-in sensor, which would be able to authenticate the user based on their individual skin texture:
More particularly, skin texture cracks are generally warmer than the surrounding skin, and hair is cooler than the surrounding skin. By using an IR thermal image sensor as the wrist biometric sensor, hair can be distinguished, thermally, from skin texture cracks by temperature.
Another one of the patents features an LED progress indicator. This would make it possible for the wearer to visually determine how far along they are with a particular task without having to activate the watch’s display.
If that’s not enough, the third patent application approved by the USPTO allows for a self-tightening strap, which could actually adjust its size based on the wearer’s location:
The third Apple Watch patent granted to Apple today is # 10,398,200 that relates to future Apple Watch that provide users with a customized band fit using a dynamic fit adjustment system.
The perfect fit will be achieved for both leisurely times and when the user cranks up their workout and need their watch band to hug their wrist like its one with them as they run or workout.
The band will even assist users to take their pulse by tightening the band to perfection to get that biometric reading just where it has to be and then automatically back off so as to not choke the circulation to your wrist.
How about a process within the two-factor authentication process? Apple has even thought about that:
For example, if a user wishes to access financial details hosted on a banking website, the banking website may require both the user’s credentials and a verification of a number of tightening-loosening patterns sent to a wearable electronic device previously authenticated by the banking website…
In one example, a tactile pattern may be a series of five squeezes of the user’s wrist (e.g., tighten and loosen in sequence). The user may thereafter enter “5” to gain access to the banking website.
Now, as is par for the course with news about Apple patents, nothing is guaranteed to actually make it out of whatever stage of development (or non-development) these features might be in. Even if Apple is considering these new elements for the Apple Watch, it doesn’t mean we will ever see them launch.
Still, these are some pretty interesting ideas. Which one of these elements would be your favorite if they did launch?
