REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 19, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. today announced Microsoft Office 365, the company’s next generation in cloud productivity that brings together Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online and Lync Online in an always-up-to-date cloud service. Office 365 makes it easier for millions more organizations to get and use Microsoft’s award-winning business productivity solutions via the cloud. With Office 365, people can work together more easily from anywhere on virtually any device, while collaborating with others inside and outside their organization in a simple and highly secure way. As part of today’s news, Microsoft is also opening a limited beta program for Office 365 in 13 countries and regions.
Office 365 is built on years of experience delivering industry-leading business cloud services ranging from the first browser-based e-mail to today’s Business Productivity Online Suite, Microsoft Office Live Small Business and Live@edu. Moving to the cloud with Office 365 means people don’t have to change the way they work, because Office 365 works with the most popular browsers, smartphones and desktop applications people use today.
“Office 365 is the best of everything we know about productivity, all in a single cloud service,” said Kurt DelBene, president of the Office Division at Microsoft. “With Office 365, your local bakery can get enterprise-caliber software and services for the first time, while a multinational pharmaceutical company can reduce costs and more easily stay current with the latest innovations. People can focus on their business, while we and our partners take care of the technology.”
Microsoft worked closely with existing customers to develop Office 365, resulting in a cloud service that is designed to meet a wide range of customer needs.
With Office 365 for small businesses, professionals and small companies with fewer than 25 employees can be up and running with Office Web Apps, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Lync Online and an external website in just 15 minutes, for $6 or 5.25 euros per user, per month.
“For a small business, Office 365 is a perfect way to start,” said Rob Nichols, chief technology officer of Allovus Design, a graphic design firm and member of Microsoft’s Customer Advisory Board for Office 365. “It has all the features we need, and we can come out of the gate with the same tools the big guys have — on day one.”
Office 365 for enterprises introduces an array of choices for midsize and large businesses as well as government organizations, starting for as little as $2 or 1.75 euros per user, per month1 for basic e-mail. Office 365 for enterprises also includes the option to get Microsoft Office Professional Plus desktop software on a pay-as-you-go basis, for the first time ever. For $24 or 22.75 euros per user, per month1, organizations can get Office Professional Plus along with e-mail, voicemail, enterprise social networking, instant messaging, Web portals, extranets, voiceconferencing and videoconferencing, webconferencing, 24×7 phone support, on-premises licenses, and more.
Office 365 creates new growth opportunities for Microsoft and its partners by reaching more customers and types of workers and meeting more business IT needs — all while cutting costs for customers.
Office 365 will be available worldwide next year. Starting today, Microsoft will begin testing Office 365 with a few thousand organizations in 13 countries and regions around the world, and the beta will be expanded to include more organizations over time. Office 365 will be generally available in 40 countries and regions next year.
Later next year, Office 365 will expand to include Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online to provide Microsoft’s complete business productivity experience to organizations of all types and sizes. Microsoft’s price cuts for Office 365 are likely aimed at budget-minded small- and midsize businesses, who often consider switching to Office from more costly hosted options, an analyst says.
Microsoft this week lowered the prices of some editions of its Office 365 cloud collaboration and communication suite, which was launched about eight months ago and competes directly with Google Apps and other similar products.
The return-on-investment (ROI) for Office 365 customers has been high at the original prices, said industry analyst Rebecca Wettemann from Nucleus Research, which has done Office 365 case studies.
“This price change is likely a penetration strategy for Microsoft to motivate more customers to move to Office 365, and the SMB market is particularly price sensitive,” she said via email.
Customers usually move to Office 365 from a much more costly hosted option or an on-premise deployment with less reliability and availability, and higher support costs, she said.
“Once customers move to Office 365 and see the benefits of the cloud, they’re likely to explore what other options are there. In most organizations, Office 365 still wins because usability is key and so many users know Office and the Microsoft Outlook interface,” Wettemann said.
It’s interesting that Microsoft is lowering prices after the product has been on the market for eight months, because Nucleus Research has found that more than half of companies that are six months or less into a cloud software deployment are willing to consider a change of vendors, she said.
“That means SaaS vendors such as Microsoft have to continue to invest in making customers successful for two quarters after the sale, as churn in the initial period is high. It drops significantly after six months and doesn’t start to spike up again until after three years,” she said.
Office 365 offers hosted e-mail and productivity and collaboration applications for companies, government agencies and schools. It comes in a variety of editions, all priced differently on a per-user, per-month subscription basis. In most editions, it includes hosted versions of Exchange, Office, SharePoint and Lync. Microsoft said in a blog post that the prices are being lowered because adoption has made running 365 more cost-efficient.Plan Changes
Prices for the four plans for midsize businesses and enterprises, labeled E1, E2, E3 and E4, dropped, in that order, from US$10 to $8; from $16 to $14; from $24 to $20; and from $27 to $22.
Office 365 also comes in a plan for small businesses, called P1, which has a 50-user limit, and in an e-mail-only option with just Exchange Online, as well as in other alternatives. The price for the P1 plan remains the same at $6 per user, per month.
Meanwhile, plan A2 of the upcoming Office 365 for Education will be free for students, faculty and staff, and prices for other education plans for staff and faculty have been “reduced significantly,” a Microsoft spokesperson said via e-mail. The A2 plan includes hosted Exchange, SharePoint, Lync and Office Web Apps. Office 365 for Education will be launched in the summer.
The new prices apply only to new customers and to existing customers when their contracts are up for renewal. Customers who select the enterprise plans — E1 to E4 — sign up for annual contracts, while small companies that choose the P1 plan renew on a month-to-month basis.

Faculty and staff at large research universities like Boston University have to manage a thicket of federal, state, and local regulations. A recent report from a bipartisan Task Force on Federal Regulation of Higher Education noted that “colleges and universities find themselves enmeshed in a jungle of red tape, facing rules that are often confusing and difficult to comply with.” A new office of Compliance Services will now support BU faculty and staff in their efforts to understand and comply with those myriad regulations.
The University’s existing compliance programs, such as those in research compliance, athletics, and Title IX, and responsibilities relating to compliance, will remain with existing schools, colleges, and departments. The new office of Compliance Services will support those efforts, and will serve as an information clearinghouse and communications pipeline between different compliance offices to promulgate best practices. It will be led, during its start-up phase, by Crystal Talley, who has been named associate vice president for compliance services. Talley has been an associate general counsel at BU since 2004.
Individual compliance offices “do a very good job meeting those compliance obligations, but we hope to offer centralized oversight and support” as other universities are adopting, says Talley. “A centralized view will help us assess whether we’re approaching compliance as efficiently as we can. If current compliance efforts are effective and efficient, we don’t want to fix what’s not broken. But if it turns out two or three offices are addressing the same issues, we may be able to do it in a simpler way.”
Talley points out that some compliance obligations affect several different departments. For example, she says, several BU entities offer medical care, from Student Health Services to the Goldman School of Dental Medicine. “That may present an opportunity to work with those departments to determine whether they are tackling similar compliance issues and can share best practices.”
Another example cited by Talley: following the 2012 conviction of Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State assistant football coach, for sexually assaulting young boys, universities reviewed procedures for protecting minors who come to campuses. Protecting minors—from having personnel trained in such matters to checking the background of outside groups, like camps, that host minors on campus—can’t be relegated to a particular college, says Talley. BU handled the matter with a task force headed by the University’s Human Resources office; in the future, Compliance Services will help those kinds of coordination activities.
President Robert A. Brown says BU is following the same strategy as fellow members of the Association of American Universities. “With the creation of this office, Boston University joins many of our AAU peers who have established a centralized compliance function to respond to the increasing proliferation of federal and state regulations and the need for more focused oversight.”
Choosing Talley to lead the new office reflects the need for “someone who had already a deep understanding of the laws and regulations facing universities, could quickly understand the culture of Boston University, was a collaborator and facilitator, and would work well with faculty and staff,” says Erika Geetter, vice president and general counsel. “It struck me that I had the absolutely perfect person in my office already. There’s not going to be any downtime where you have to build trust and relationships; those are already there.”
Attorney Sheila O’Leary will handle Talley’s associate general counsel duties until Talley’s successor at Compliance Services takes over.
