The New York Times to Launch eBook Best-Seller Lists
Independent Third Party, RoyaltyShare, Inc., Will Help Validate Sales Data
NEW YORK, Nov 11, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — The New York Times announced today it will publish eBook fiction and nonfiction Best-Seller Lists beginning early 2011.
Since 1935, The New York Times Best-Seller Lists have been the definitive metric that book publishers and authors have used to judge success. The Times’s eBook Best-Seller Lists are a natural extension of this important franchise as the proliferation of portable devices grows.
“The vibrant growth of digital publishing has created a need for an impartial, reliable source for tracking and reporting the top-selling eBooks across the country,” said Janet Elder, editor of News Surveys for The New York Times. “The Times is a trusted brand within the book publishing industry and with consumers. As with all The Times’s rankings, these additional lists will benefit from corroborative sourcing and we will watch for trends in the industry.”
“The best-seller list is an essential part of the Book Review, and we’re excited we’ll be able to give readers newer and more complete information,” said Sam Tanenhaus, editor of The New York Times Book Review.
The rankings will reflect sales aggregated from a growing number of online service providers who sell eBooks to consumers. To further secure the integrity of the rankings, The Times is aggressively developing a means of processing and displaying the information necessary, and of verifying the data provided.
The Times has entered into a relationship with an independent third party, RoyaltyShare, Inc., whose unique, Web-based software platform will be used by the staff of The New York Times Best Seller Lists to help validate eBooks sales data received from various sources.
As new devices continue to captivate readers, the eBook category has seen tremendous growth. The Association of American Publishers recently reported that eBook sales for the first eight months of the year were up more than 190 percent, generating nine percent of total consumer book sales.
The lists will appear in The New York Times Book Review both in print and online editions. Rankings will reflect sales for the week at many venues where a wide range of general interest eBooks are sold nationwide. These include independent book retailers; national, regional and local chains; and online and multimedia entertainment retailers.

After being effectively booted off the Web by its U.S. domain name system (DNS) provider, the whistleblower website WikiLeaks has managed to reemerge on the Swiss domain, where it continues to publish classified cables detailing the activities of U.S. diplomats around the world.
EveryDNS.net, a group providing free domain name services, terminated WikiLeaks’ service followed what it described as a severe distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.
On Monday, chúng tôi informed WikiLeaks that it would terminate its service in 24 hours owing to the attack, which it claimed violated its usage agreement for disrupting other domains that use the service.
“EveryDNS.net is not taking a position on the content hosted on the chúng tôi or chúng tôi website, it is following established policies,” chúng tôi said in a note on its site. “No one chúng tôi user has the right to put at risk, yesterday, today or tomorrow, the service that hundreds of thousands of other websites depend on.”
Then, Friday afternoon, WikiLeaks said its site was back online with Web addresses in the German (.de), Finnish (.fi) and Dutch(.nl) country code top-level domains.
WikiLeaks’ troubles with its DNS provider come as the latest fallout from the publication of the massive cache of secret diplomatic cables that began on Sunday, a move that elicited harsh condemnations from the Obama administration, and an announcement from the Justice Department that it is pursuing an investigation into WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange, an Australian citizen believed to be in the United Kingdom. British media outlets have reportedthat authorities are expected to arrest Assange within days on unrelated rape charges he is facing in Sweden, in addition to numerous potential criminal charges in various countries pertaining to the publication of stolen documents.
In the meantime, WikiLeaks has lost its hosting service in the United States after Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) dropped the site from its Amazon Web Services cloud-based storage platform, claiming that the organization violated its terms-of-service agreement, which stipulates that customers must “own or otherwise control all of the rights to the content.”
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Ct.), the chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, praised the move, saying that he would be pressing Amazon for details of its relationship with WikiLeaks.
“I call on any other company or organization that is hosting Wikileaks to immediately terminate its relationship with them,” Lieberman said in a statement. “Wikileaks’ illegal, outrageous and reckless acts have compromised our national security and put lives at risk around the world. No responsible company — whether American or foreign — should assist Wikileaks in its efforts to disseminate these stolen materials.”
Amazon, for its part, said that its decision to take down WikiLeaks was its own, disputing speculation that it had been acting at the behest of the government.
“There have been reports that a government inquiry prompted us not to serve WikiLeaks any longer. That is inaccurate,” Amazon said in a blog post.
WikiLeaks responded testily, again by Twitter.
“If Amazon are so uncomfortable with the First Amendment, they should get out of the business of selling books,” the group said.

Unsaturated fats are healthier but less versatile. Pexels
In 2006, New York City passed a law banning artificial trans fats, also known as partially hydrogenated fats, in all restaurant foods. The law was first applied to fried foods—but not fried bread products like donuts—before taking effect for all restaurant foods in July 2008. A study released on Wednesday in the Journal of American Medical Association Cardiology found that the law, criticized by some as evidence of a “nanny state”, actually lead to a six percent decline in hospitalizations and strokes. To understand why, it helps to know what trans fats are and what they do in the body.
It’s been known since the 1950s that eating a lot of saturated fats is associated with heart attacks and poor cardiovascular health. Saturated fats are a kind of fat found primarily in animal products like lard and butter (though palm oils are a notable exception) and tend to be solid at room temperature. They get their name because, while all fats are made of long chains of carbon atoms, the carbon molecules that make up saturated fats share no double bonds—instead, they are “saturated” with hydrogen molecules. This means they’re solid at room temperature, which makes them great for a variety of cooking purposes, in particular deep frying and the flakey goodness associated with pie crusts and perfect croissants.
Unsaturated fats, which tend to be liquid at room temperature, share double bonds between their carbon molecules and are often, but not exclusively, found in vegetables oils. Monounsaturated oils—like corn, peanut, and soy oil—have just one double carbon bond. Polyunsaturated fats (the so called ‘healthy fats’ like the omega-3 fats found in salmon or olive oil) have many double carbon bonds.
Molecular structure of different types of fats. PopSci
The problem is that while unsaturated fats are healthier, they’re also tougher to use. They aren’t as versatile (as anyone who has attempted to substitute corn oil for butter in a cookie recipe can attest). And saturated fats, apart from being artery cloggers, also tend to go rancid (as anyone who regularly uses lard knows). In the 1950s, researchers realized they could substitute animal fats with vegetable oils by using a hydrogen reaction to turn an unsaturated fat into a partially hydrogenated fat—one with many of the same properties as a saturated fat, but with less, well, saturated fat. Voila, they made margarine.
Researchers didn’t invent trans fats—not exactly. Trans fats are naturally present in meat, but only in minuscule amounts. By finding a process to turn unsaturated fats into partially saturated fats, however, scientists set the stage for people to consume a lot of trans fats all at once for the first time.
In the 1980s, health activists actually encouraged people to consume margarine in lieu of butter, and Crisco in lieu of lard, and pressured McDonalds to remove the beef from its french fry oil. It was all under the belief that the partially hydrogenated fats—because they contained less saturated fat than butter or lard—were healthier. And food manufacturers loved the stuff, because it was so versatile. Really, really versatile: Oreo’s filling and the stuff you deep fry donuts in are essentially the same thing. But by the time New York City implemented the ban, they’d realized that the stuff was no good.
It turns out that butter was healthier than trans fats like margarine. Pexels
Artificial trans fats, as it turns out, are actually worse for humans than saturated fats. Not only do they raise our LDL (or “bad cholesterol”) just like saturated fats do, but unlike saturated fats, they also lower the HDL (“good cholesterol”), increasing the risk of heart disease. Trans fat consumption is also associated with development of diabetes and dementia.
The JAMA study, which analyzed data from the New York State Department of Public Health from 2002-2013 and compared rates of hospitalization between the 11 New York State counties (five of which comprise New York City) which banned trans fat between 2007 and 2011, suggests that the research is right. Trans fats can be deadly.
In the years since New York City pioneered the ban, trans fats have fallen out of favor all over. Even Crisco is now legally trans fat free (a designation which the FDA says applies to any product with less than .5 grams of trans fat per serving) and it’s recommended that nobody consume more than 2 grams of trans fat per day. And the FDA has followed New York City’s lead—by 2023, trans fat use will be drastically curtailed in processed foods.
Unfortunately, many manufacturers are turning to palm oil instead. That may be better for human health, but is detrimental to the environment. The plantations used to harvest the oil have been linked to the destruction of mangrove forests and the decline of the orangutan.
Open Mic: New Android phones will always be listening
In a bit of a leak of information this weekend, Google’s next-generation software spilled on the heels of the upcoming Motorola smartphone Moto X. This device will be working with Google’s next iteration of their mobile software and will act as a bit of a centerpiece for said software, showing off abilities like voice commands with a system that’s able to listen all the time.
While this sort of constant listening ability isn’t new, it’ll certainly stoke the flames with users fearful of the privacy-invading abilities of miniature monitors of all kinds. If you take Google Glass for example, you see so much fear of the unknown that it’s striking – just because the device allows a camera to be mounted to a person’s face, the public loses its collective mind over Big Brother-esque possibilities.
UPDATE: Since this article was published, we’ve reviewed the Moto X, the DROID Ultra, and the DROID MAXX, each of them working with hands-free mode as spoken about above and below. This is still also referred to as “always listening”.
Here with Google’s next version of Android – at least as it rests in the Moto X, you’ll have sound being drawn upon at any given moment. Google Glass also has abilities similar to this with its own always-on voice recognition system.
But how different is that from the Wi-Fi detecting abilities of smartphones, tablets, and notebooks we’ve been using for years? The difference is that we humans cannot transmit the signals these devices have ben seeking with their wireless data radios – with the “always” button tapped in a device’s voice recognition engine, all will be heard.
See more on the Social Implications of Google Glass – “Staring” and all.
Consider the idea that any smartphone right this minute could have its voice recorder activated. How different is this from Google’s next-generation software, save its intended purpose?
Head to 3:09 into this video to see what’ll happen if you use Open Mic incorrectly. Make sure you’re not calling Mom on accident.
NOTE: Back when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was first introduced, there was a feature – and there continues to be a feature – tagged as “open microphone”. This is an experience that currently works with Android devices allowing voice dictation and streaming voice recognition – at the moment it does not work with voice commands.
“Android 4.0 introduces a powerful new voice input engine that offers a continuous “open microphone” experience and streaming voice recognition. The new voice input engine lets you dictate the text you want, for as long as you want, using the language you want. You can speak continuously for a prolonged time, even pausing for intervals if needed, and dictate punctuation to create correct sentences. ” – Google for Ice Cream Sandwich About
This system is translated, therefor, to the next version of Android with streaming voice commands, aka “Open Mic”. This update allows you to work with everything introduced with the newest version of Google’s online search engine and allows it to listen in at all times. That’s Conversational Search in Chrome if you’d like to try it right now.
You will still have to press or tap a button to make it all work, of course. In the future you’ll only have to press a button once and you’ll have your Android smartphone there listening to you whenever you like – easy and fun, right?
