Bob Woods likes to keep his staff lean.

As global IT director at Ampacet Corp., a large chemical manufacturer in

Tarrytown, N.Y., Woods has a staff of eight IT professionals who serve

800 employees worldwide. Normally these numbers work, but when MyDoom and

other high-profile viruses took down his messaging system early last

year, that delicate balance was destroyed.

Woods was forced to outtask the security of his messaging system rather

than tax his own IT team to keep up with the threats. Outtasking allows

him to offload one duty, instead of outsourcing his entire message


”We deem our messaging system to be mission-critical — it’s the

prominent source of communication between our user community and our

customers,” Woods says. “[Virus outbreaks caused] not only a loss of

productivity for users, but a lot of lost productivity for IT staff to

react to situations. In some instances, we spent days trying to eradicate

the worms.”

Woods says the worm annihilation process was draining for his team.

”Not only did we have to patch the server and scan for viruses, we had

to go to the tape media to restore files, then go to each desktop, patch

there and identify the corrupt data,” explains Woods. ”We operate lean

and efficiently. I didn’t want to say to management that we needed

resources to solve this issue.”

The Ampacet team looked for a suitable in-house solution. ”We searched

the marketplace for add-on functionality, such as network appliances, but

the investment was too great,” he says. ”We would have to maintain them

ourselves and the training and management were just too expensive.”

So Woods chose a different path — outtasking. While the company

maintains control of its Exchange 5.5 servers, it contracts with Equant,

a service provider based in New York City, for spam blocking, anti-virus

and content filtering. The cost is a flate rate of $2.05 per user/per

month. Woods initially started with a pilot project of 100 users, but has

since expanded the service to the entire company — even remote workers.

Equant uses FrontBridge Technologies software to intercept inbound e-mail

for customers and scans it for various threats. Alan Simpkins, practice

head for IT services at Equant in New York, says off-loading messaging

security lowers an enterprise’s total risk profile.

”If you never get that e-mail in your network, then the likelihood of

this link’ to worry about.”

Security experts agree that outtasking from companies like Equant,

Postini and MessageLabs creates another level of complexity for IT

workers in an already-complex network — but sometimes it’s a necessary


”Filtering spam and viruses tends to be a game of one-upmanship,” says

Andreas Antonopoulos, senior vice president at Nemertes Research in New

and viruses comes out. Your only other choice is to spend money on

software and licenses and appliances to do this.”

He adds that message security requires constant attention from an IT

staff, especially in this era of compliance and regulatory constraints.

”Its not like an e-mail server where you’re simply adding and

changing users,” adds Antonopoulos. ”With security, you have to make

sure that signatures are up to date and your anti-virus is up to date.”

The biggest problem for IT staff surrounding message security is handling

false positives. ”Something may leak through occasionally — an

executive didn’t get his e-mail because it’s in the spam filter,” says

Antonopoulos. ”With the high volume of e-mail at most companies today,

they don’t have the resources to deal with these false positives.”

But some experts warn that outtasking could give companies a false sense

of security.

”The drawback to these managed services is that if the mail has been

delivered through to your server before a fix has been issued for a

virus, you could find yourself vulnerable to attacks,” says Paul Stamp,

an analyst at Forrester Research in Cambridge, Mass. ”You still need

your IT department at the ready when viruses hit.”

Woods agrees. He says even with the service, his team has been diligent

about keeping on their toes and heightening user awareness about viruses.

Stamp says he sees an additional opportunity for message security


”So far, these services have mostly been devoted to incoming mail but I

can see them starting to look at outgoing, as well,” he says.

”Companies in high-compliance areas like finance and health care could

use these services for intelligent scanning of their mail to make sure

that confidential information is not leaving the network.”

Comment: I Can See Only An Expensive Solution To Apple/Foxconn’s Legal Problem

Foxconn’s legal problem, reported this morning, is also Apple’s problem.

Apple has long worked hard to ensure suppliers like Foxconn comply with labor regulations, conducting regular audits to ensure underage workers are not employed, and enforcing Apple’s own rules on things like maximum overtime hours.

However, there is one breach of China’s employment laws that would seem almost impossible for either Foxconn or Apple to resolve, at least in the short term…

It’s been reported this morning that Apple has admitted that Foxconn is in massive breach of one law in China.

The Chinese Labor Watch group released a lengthy report alleging several violations of Chinese law against Foxconn, the key iPhone assembler. Apple said it investigated and denies most of the allegations but did say that it found Foxconn’s iPhone factory workforce was made up of 50% temporary labor, way above the 10% rule according to the law.

Apple said that it is working closely with Foxconn to resolve the issue, but Chinese Labor Watch claims that Apple is allowing Foxconn to continue using the workers, despite it technically breaking Chinese law.

That’s a tough one to solve.

iPhone assembly is the very definition of seasonal work. If you look at Apple’s iPhone revenue (courtesy of six colors), there is a completely consistent pattern, exactly as you’d expect:

A step up when new iPhones go on sale in the last week or two of a quarter

A huge jump in the following quarter, when most new iPhone sales are made

A drop in sales afterwards

A slump in the quarter leading up to next year’s models

It doesn’t matter whether Apple launches one, two, or three new models each September — that pattern isn’t going to change. And when demand in fiscal Q1 is around twice that of fiscal Q3, there is no sensible way to meet production requirements without taking on a massive influx of temporary staff. Foxconn’s legal problem seems almost insoluble.

I can see only three logical options for compliance, two of which Apple would never support.

Option one would be unethical behavior, like making conditions so unpleasant for staff during the off season that they choose to leave. A company of Foxconn’s stature isn’t going to consider that, and even if it were willing to do so, Apple would shut down any such initiative within a heartbeat.

Option two is to technically comply with the law while flouting its intent. The obvious example here would be give all the temporary staff “permanent” positions, then offer them financial incentives to resign their posts afterwards. Or create subsidiary companies that are formed when demand is needed and dissolved when it isn’t. But I can’t see Apple permitting that type of sketchiness, either.

Which leaves option three: to remain at peak employment levels throughout the year (or within 10% of same). That would be legal and ethical — but it would massively increase labor costs just to have a lot of staff twiddling their thumbs for much of the year.

The problem can be solved in the long term. Foxconn is moving increasingly replacing human workers with robots, and its end goal is completely automated factories. No labor, no labor law problems.

Medium-term, Apple can also continue to open up production facilities in other countries, whose governments may favor temporary work over no work at all.

But in the short term, I don’t see what Foxconn and Apple can do, other than option three. And at a time when Apple is already having to absorb the costs of US tariffs on some products entering the country from China — and will have to do the same with iPhones from December — a substantial additional production cost is something the Cupertino, California, company really doesn’t need.

We send all sorts of things via email these days, from documents to photos. Whether for business or personal reasons, you may want to send an entire folder that contains many items.

You can send a folder using the default email application on Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone, but you should reduce the size before you attach it. Compressing a folder makes it simpler for you to send and easier for your recipient to receive. Here, we’ll show you how to attach a folder to an email, starting with how to compress it.

Attach a Folder to an Email on Windows

When you try to attach a folder to an email in Microsoft Outlook, you’ll notice that you cannot do so. Outlook doesn’t allow you to attach a folder directly to an email. However, once you compress it, you can attach it like any other file.

Compress the Folder

In the shortcut menu, select

Send to

and then

Compressed (zipped) folder

. This wording may differ depending on the version of Windows you use.

Add the File to an Email

Open Outlook and create a new email as you usually would. You can then attach your ZIP file (folder) in a few ways:

Drag the file into the body of the message window.

in the ribbon and choose the file in the

Recent Items


Then, complete your email and send it on its way.

Your mail recipient simply unzips the file on their device like any other.

Attach a Folder to an Email on Mac

Mac works differently than Windows when attaching a folder to an email. You can do so without compressing the folder first. Apple Mail automatically creates a ZIP file for the folder for you when you send the email.

However, we’ll still include instructions for compressing the folder in case you prefer to do so yourself.

Compress the Folder (Optional)

In the shortcut menu, pick

Compress [Folder name]


Add the Folder or File to an Email

Open Mail and start a new message as you usually would. Then, you can attach the folder directly (or the ZIP file you created) in one of these ways:

Drag the folder or file into the body of the email message.

Select the

icon (paperclip) in the toolbar. Locate the folder or ZIP file and pick

Choose file


You can then compose your message and send it to the recipient.

Your recipient can then unzip the file on their Mac or another device. If they use Mail on Mac, the file should automatically unzip for them.

Before you can attach your folder to an email in Gmail on Android, you’ll need to compress it. If you try to attach the folder as is, it simply opens for you to see the individual files.

Compress the Folder

Open the


app and locate the folder you want to send.

Tap the left side of the folder to select it, and then tap the

three dots

on the top right.




You’ll see your ZIP file created with the same name as your folder.

To rename it, select the file, tap the three dots on the top right, and pick Rename.

Unlike the Mail app on Mac, you will need to compress your folder before you attach it to your email on iPhone and iPad. Like on Android, if you select the folder as the attachment, it simply opens for you to view the items.

Compress the Folder

Open the


app and locate the folder you want to send.

Tap and hold the folder to display the shortcut menu.




You’ll then see a ZIP file created with the same name as the folder.

To rename it, tap and hold the file, then pick Rename.

Add the File to an Email

Open the Mail app and create a new message like usual.

Place your cursor in the body of the email to display the arrow above the keyboard.

Tap that arrow until you see the row of icons, and pick the


icon (document).

Locate the ZIP file in the


app and select it.

When the ZIP file appears in the body of the email, compose your message and send it on its way.

Your recipient can then unzip the file on iPhone, iPad, or another device as usual.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, metaphorically of-course, you must have read the news that Google doesn’t provide a free Google Apps plans anymore. Which means that if you want to host email for your domain with Google Apps, it is going to cost you $5/user/month. Each domain has an associated MX record. The MX record points to the server that is supposed to accept emails for that particular domain. If you don’t know how to edit the DNS settings for your domain, head over to your domain registrar’s website and their tech support guys will be happy to handle them for you.

How To Validate Email Addresses In Javascript

Validating an email using JavaScript is not possible. The only 100% reliable way to validate an email address is by sending an email to the address to see if works.

That being said, you can use JavaScript and regular expression patterns (regex) to ‘validate’ most of the emails.

Just keep in mind you will never be able to write a regular expression that would be able to validate all the edge case email addresses like exceptionally long TLDs, or other domain-specific conventions that aren’t known.

Unfortunately, the best way to validate an email address is by sending an email to the address.

But concluding this way would be lame, wouldn’t it?

This guide teaches you the 2nd best way to validate emails, that is, how to do it with JavaScript + regex.

The 2nd Best Way to Validate Emails in JavaScript

Let’s take a look at how you can validate most of the email addresses using JavaScript.

To validate anything related to text, you can use regular expressions (regex).

⚠️ Unfortunately, unless you’re well-versed in regular expressions, you won’t understand anything about the following mess.

Here’s what the regex pattern for RFC 5322 official standard emails looks like. In other words, here’s a regular expression that you can use to validate most modern email addresses.

I’m not going to explain piece by piece how the above regular expression pattern works. This would make the 5-minute read a 30-minute read (or longer if you’re not familiar with regex).

But as a standalone expression, the above regex can’t do much. Instead, you need to place the regular expression inside JavaScript’s string.match() method for validating email strings.

For example, here’s a JavaScript validate() function that validates an email address string:

return String(email) .toLowerCase() };

Let’s use this function to check two emails:

console.log(“This email is valid”) }

if (validate(“artturi@codingem@com”)) { console.log(“This email is valid”) }

What Is Regex?

In a nutshell, regex (short for the regular expression) is a way to match patterns in text. In a sense, regex is CTRL + F on steroids. It not only matches with words but patterns, like emails, phone numbers, or such.

Regex is a powerful pattern-matching technique you can use to search, edit, and manipulate text. It’s commonly used in different types of software, including text editors, word processors, and programming languages.

A regex pattern is written using a combination of normal and special characters, and it is used to search for, and potentially replace, matching text in a larger body of text.

For example, the regular expression d+ searches for digits in the text.

This is an example of a really simple regular expression.

But the power of regex stems from its extensibility. You can combine the basic operators to form unbelievably long chains of expressions that for example find phone numbers in a text document.

Another really useful thing about regex is that most programming languages support it natively.

In JavaScript, you can use regular expressions to do pattern matching which can be useful when doing form validations or searching for patterns in other types of data you might have on your applications.

Testing the Regex

If you’re new to regex, make sure to start using regex online editors as early as possible. They offer a huge time saver when working with custom regular expressions.

As you can see, the regex captures all the valid-looking email addresses. Just remember, it’s not perfect. Regex can never handle corner cases of emails.
