Suggested April 2024 Portal Ios App Review: Step Into Serenity With Immersive Soundscapes

There are plenty of perks of living in our modern times, but the one major downside is the stress and hustle that seems impossible to escape no matter where you go. Well, it may not be impossible anymore! I have found a magical ‘portal” of escape that is an easy way to add more zen to our lives, anytime, anywhere.

I’m talking about Portal, an immersive soundscapes app that promises to change your surroundings to cut down stress and improve your sleep, productivity, and overall mental wellbeing? Does it actually manage to achieve this? Read my full review below to find out.

Portal – Immersive Escapes: What’s it all about?

As the name suggests, the Portal app is designed to transport you to serenity through the power of ambient sounds. More specifically, it brings binaural 3D audio and cinematic ultra HD visuals from some of the world’s most beautiful places to your iPhone or iPad.

These soundscapes include forests, waterfalls, serene lakes, beaches, forests, and more. So, the app serves as your virtual portal to over 40 relaxing spots that you’d want to visit in real life.

But what exactly is the purpose? Well, according to the founder, Nick Daniels, the app lets you change your surroundings so that you can experience the soothing, rejuvenating power of nature even when you’re trapped in an urban jungle.

In a way, it’s similar to meditation apps but focuses purely on ambient sound rather than any sort of music or auditory guidance.

As an avid traveler and wellness enthusiast, I was intrigued and eager to try it out. Let’s have a look at how it works.

How to use the Portal app on iPhone

When you open the Portal app, it will ask you to choose an option from three modes, described below.

This mode helps you concentrate on the task at hand and has the Pomodoro technique integrated into it. That is 25 minutes of work, followed by a 5-minute break. Of course, you can change this timing if you want.

You can type the task you want to focus on and start the timer. I think it makes an excellent audio-visual companion to iOS 15’s Focus mode.

This mode is to drift off into slumberland, with a timer automatically turning off the sound and an alarm for the following day. You will be woken up by a fade-in of sounds from the portal you select, along with matching lighting if you’ve connected your compatible smart lights.

This mode is for all those times when you need a break from life. It’s perfect for meditation, with a default timer of 20 minutes that can be adjusted as you like. Take a trip to Scotland, Nepal, or some other exotic destination right in the middle of your day! It also provides four different breathing exercises to relax and tune into your body.

No matter which mode you pick, you have over 40 different scenes or “portals” to tune into.

Some of my favorites include:

Pacific Waves of Hawaii

Dawn at Lake Bled in Slovenia

Redwood National Park in California

Spring Barley Field in Devon, United Kingdom

Highlands Snow in Scotland

Once you’ve selected a portal, just put on your headphones and let the sound work its magic. It continues playing even when you navigate away from the app or lock your device screen.

You can pause and resume it from your lock screen anytime. Even as I write this, I’m listening to the Pacific Waves and pretending that I’m on the beach in Hawaii. It’s such a relief to block out the noise of other people’s conversations while I concentrate on work!

Portal app options: Use it your way

In addition to mesmerizing, high-quality sound and visuals, Portal gives you several options to customize your experience. These are explained below.

1. Timer

This is pretty self-explanatory. As mentioned above, each mode comes with a default timer, but you can adjust it as you like so that the app can be a convenient part of your routine.

2. Static vs. dynamic audio

For those who have headphones supporting Apple’s Spatial Audio, you can enjoy a truly immersive experience with dynamic sound on the Portal app.

Not all soundscapes support this feature yet, but those that do are simply magical. Nonetheless, even the default static audio is of top-notch quality with a rich, detailed sound that replicates the respective natural environment.

3. Night dock

This feature can be found in the settings menu of the app. Once enabled, it darkens the Portal background, automatically hides the interface, and prevents the app from locking. You can opt to lock the screen if that’s what you prefer.

4. Mix audio functionality

This one’s a unique feature that’s my favorite! Once enabled, it allows the Portal app to continue playing simultaneously with other audio such as music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc. This is pretty cool, and I love the experience!

5. Smart lighting

Take things up a notch by connecting the app to your HomeKit, Philips Hue, or Nanoleaf smart lights to create beautiful ambient lighting effects that match the portal you’ve chosen. For instance, you could be greeted with some rose-colored light as you wake up to the Dawn at Lake Bled portal.

My experience with the Portal app: Magical or meh? iGeekometer User-friendliness

I’ve tried all three modes, and it’s helped me work better, fall asleep faster, and get in some quick meditations throughout the day to calm my mind. Moreover, the user interface is beautifully designed and easy to find your way around.

All in all, Portal is a great app to have in your mental wellness toolkit because it provides the perfect escape from the chaos of everyday life.

Newzik Ios App Review: A Power

Sheet music is an important asset for any musician, whether a learner or professional. But why should you lug them around or fumble during setup when you can easily carry all your scores on iPhone or iPad with Newzik. The versatile sheet music reader allows you to concentrate on what matters most, the music.

But how exactly does it do that? And what makes this app such a real deal for musicians? Read this hands-on Newzik app review for all your answers.

Newzik: One app for all your sheet music needs

Newzik is designed to give you complete control of your digital scores. Upload, rehearse, perform, organize, improvise, and collaborate to your heart’s content. The developers have studied and worked with many performers to understand their needs from such an app.

As a result, you get a feature-packed, comprehensive, and intuitive toolbox that’ll fit every musician’s bill. I know that these are some tall claims, but here’s how the Newzik app walks the talk.

Build and access your library across devices

First and foremost, it’s super simple to get your music onboard. The reader is compatible with most standard formats, including PDF, MusicXML, audio, and more.

And you can upload sheet music from your computer, cloud storage like iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc., or simply scan the paper scores to digitize them.

Plus, you can import some free scores from Newzik’s library, buy from partners or use templates to create the scores from scratch. And thanks to Newzik Cloud, your library is constantly synchronized across the iPhone app and Newzik web.

That means you can access your scores anywhere, anytime, and from any device. And remarkably, the web version is as smooth and feature-packed as the app.

Make the most of your music with Newzik

Now, getting your music on Newzik cloud is just the first step. Playing, practicing, editing, collaborating, etc., are some important next steps. And remarkably, Newzik handles them all flawlessly.

An intuitive UI

I love music, but I am no maestro, and still, the app felt quite smooth. Even though there are extensive tutorials available, I could seamlessly maneuver through the app without any issue.

Everything is well labeled and thought about, including the settings section. See it for yourself.

Another great thing about the interface is its intuitiveness. When playing a score, the page automatically turns, so your focus is maintained. You can also use a Bluetooth pedal for switching pages.

And a tap on the center of the page invokes the menu bar. You can also access the display or other settings from here; just tap the three-dot icon.

Annotate and manage the scores Organize your sheet music to the T

Keep your scores well organized under setlists and projects. Make a playlist, lesson, favorite list, or create pieces by joining multiple parts for quick and easy access. Moreover, you can add scores to as many setlists or projects as you want.

Notably, a copy is created when you add tracks to your project, and anything you edit here would not affect the original ones. In contrast, changes made in setlists are universal.

Add audio and video

Want to add a sample into the mix for reference? Newzik has thought about that as well. You can add audio or MIDI tracks, your recordings, or even a YouTube video, that’ll play automatically as the page turns.

Further, you can also choose to speed up, slow down, or transpose the clips and practice at your own pace.

Made for collaboration

And not just that, audio or video clips can also be added showing your version of the score. The perfect feature for band members, orchestra troops, and more to keep the creative exchange alive, even when they are not face-to-face.

LiveScores – Maestria Who is it for?

Anyone and everyone, whether you are a:

Student – The intuitive, easy-to-use interface allows and supports students to self-learn or appoint a teacher for guidance.

Teachers – Between annotation, collaboration, audio, video assist, and personalized projects for different courses and classes, plenty of features supporting teachers, especially online classes.

Professionals – Solo, bands, orchestra, DJs, etc., almost all professional musicians can benefit from Newzik and its music-oriented feature list.

How To Change App Icons On Ios 14 With Shortcuts

While iOS 14 brings some much-needed customizability to iOS, iPhones are still missing some key features when it comes to customization. Namely, the ability to use custom icon packs. Custom icon packs help you drastically change the look of your device which can be a huge plus point for some users. Thankfully there is a quick workaround that will help you change app icons on iOS without even jailbreaking your device. So let’s get started.

How to change app icons on iOS 14?

Instead of directly changing icon packs that require root-level file system access, we will use Apple’s Shortcuts app that helps you create shortcuts for particular apps that can then be customized in your way. The only downside to this workaround is the fact that the new icon will open Shortcuts first and then the app that you linked to it. This might be a dealbreaker for some users but it is currently the only way to customize icons on an iOS device.

Things you will need

An iOS 14 device

Download the Shortcuts app on your iOS device and launch the app.

Now tap on the ‘+’ in the top right corner of your screen.

Tap on ‘Add action’.

Now search for ‘Open app’ in the search bar.

Scroll down and tap on ‘Open App’ under the Actions section.

The action will now be added to your new shortcut. Tap on ‘Choose’ as shown below.

You will now get a list of all the apps installed on your device. Find the app you wish to change the icon for and tap on it to select it. For this example, we will be using Filmic Pro.

Once the app has been added to the shortcut action, tap on the ‘3-dot’ menu icon in the top right corner.

Now add a name for your shortcut. This name will only be used to identify the action in the Shortcuts app so you can customize the name to your liking.

Now tap on ‘Add to Home Screen’.

Enter the name for your home screen icon under ‘Home Screen Name and Icon’. We recommend you use the official app name if you are going for the official look.

Now that you have entered the name, tap on the icon beside the text field.

Tap on ‘Choose Photo’.

Now choose the photo that you wish to use as your app icon from your photo library. Tap on it to choose it.

You will now get the option to crop your icon. Select the desired dimensions based on your preference and once you are done, tap on ‘Choose’ in the bottom right corner of your screen.

Finally, tap on ‘Add’ at the top right corner of your screen.

Once the app is added to your home screen, tap on ‘Done’ in the top right corner again.

Now go to your home screen and you should have the new App icon available on your home screen.

Tap the icon to launch the app and the app you chose should now be open.

Video Guide

What to do with the original app icon on the home screen?

You can remove the app icon from your home screen and move it to the app library. This way it will be hidden away and be only visible alongside the shortcut you created only while using the spotlight search. Let’s take a look at the procedure.

Find the original icon on your home screen. Now tap and hold/ force touch on the icon depending on your device.

Now tap on ‘Remove App’.

Select ‘Move to App Library’.

And that’s it, the app should now be moved to your App library and should no longer be visible on your home screen.

Can you avoid opening Shortcuts app every time you tap on Shortcut?

While you CANNOT ignore the Shortcut app upon tapping on a shortcut, you can, however, speed up the process by follow the method below.

How to fasten opening of an app via Shortcuts

You can fasten the opening of apps via Shortcuts by reducing the app animation and transition effects which Apple neatly allows you to do through the ‘Reduce Motion’ option inside iOS. When you enable ‘Reduce Motion’, all motion effects like animation, parallax effect, and screen transitions will be turned off which will result in faster launching of apps on a regular basis and will also speed up app launches via Shortcuts.

This should make app animations and app launches faster but for best results, we also recommend that you enable the ‘Prefer Cross-Fade Transitions’ option after enabling ‘Reduce Motion’.

How to remove an app shortcut from the home screen

If you don’t wish to keep the shortcut that you made, you can remove it from your home screen by long-pressing on the shortcut icon and then selecting the ‘Delete Bookmark’ option that pops up on the screen. This will remove the shortcut from your home screen but the created shortcut will still show up inside the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.

How to delete a shortcut entirely

Now that you know that removing a shortcut from the home screen doesn’t delete it from the Shortcuts app, there’s still a way to delete it entirely.

To do this, you need to open the Shortcuts app and tap on the ‘Select’ option available at the top right corner of the screen. Now, select the shortcut you wish to delete (in this case, the one labeled Backdrops Shortcut) and then tap on ‘Delete’ at the bottom right. You will need to confirm this action by tapping on the ‘Delete Shortcut’ option from the dialog that appears below.

There you go! The shortcut that you created using the Shortcuts app has been deleted from the app and you can’t access it again.

Ios 16 Recently Deleted Messages: Our Complete Step

With the number of messaging apps that you regularly use, texts you receive on the native Messages app on the iPhone may typically go unnoticed. If you’re like us, you may often find it difficult to search for something important among the sea of irrelevant messages you get daily. While you were able to remove these messages from your iPhone in the past, sometimes you could also end up accidentally deleting a text that was of significance.

To prevent this from happening, Apple now allows iPhone users to keep deleted messages in the Recently Deleted section which can be accessed at a later time if the user needs them. In this post, we’ll explain everything you need to know about Recently Deleted messages on iOS 16 and how you may use it on your iPhone.

What are ‘Recently Deleted’ messages on iOS 16?

Recently Deleted is a new section inside the Messages app on iOS 16 which lets you view any messages you deleted from your iPhone in the last month. Any messages you delete from your iMessage account will show up inside this section and this includes text messages, pictures, voice messages, or files shared by you or others. Messages inside the Recently Deleted section would include both single messages you removed from a conversation as well as entire conversations.

Before this, when you deleted a message on iOS 15, the message would instantly be removed from your iPhone and wouldn’t be readily recoverable. Instead, the only way to recover deleted messages on iOS 15 was to restore your iPhone to an older backup that had saved the message you want to recover.

With iOS 16, you can easily access the messages you delete and even recover them for a limited time before they’re permanently deleted from your iPhone.

How to move messages on your iPhone to Recently Deleted

Messages can be moved to Recently Deleted when you delete them from the Messages app on your iPhone.  To move messages to Recently Deleted, open the Messages app on your iPhone.

Note: This will only be possible if your iPhone runs on iOS 16 or later. If you’re running on an older version of iOS, the messages you delete wouldn’t be accessible unless you restore your iPhone to an older backup.

Delete an entire message thread

Inside Messages, locate the thread you want to remove a message from. If you wish to move an entire message thread, tap and hold on the preferred thread.

In the overflow menu that appears, select Delete.

In the prompt that appears at the bottom, tap on Delete to confirm your action.

Delete a single message from a thread

If you wish to delete a single message from a thread, open the thread by tapping on it.

In the overflow menu that appears, select More.

The selected message will now be highlighted with a blue tick icon on the left-hand side. From this screen, you can select more messages from the thread you wish to move to the Recently Deleted section. Once you’ve selected the messages you want to move, tap on the trash icon at the bottom left corner.

In the prompt that appears at the bottom, tap on Delete Messages.

The selected messages will now be sent to the Recently Deleted section inside the Messages app.

In the overflow menu that appears, tap on Select Messages.

You will now be able to select multiple messages that you want to move to Recently Deleted. To make your selection, simply tap on the desired messages and you will see blue tick icons appear on the left-hand side.

Once you’ve selected the messages, tap on Delete at the bottom right corner.

In the prompt that appears at the bottom, tap on Delete.

What happens when you move messages to Recently Deleted?

When you delete a message on iOS 16, the selected message or thread will instantly move to the Recently Deleted folder inside the Messages app. iOS stores all of your recent messages inside this section for up to 30 days from the time you deleted a message.

During this time, you can access any of the messages you sent to Recently Deleted, bring them back to your conversations, or delete them manually from there to permanently erase any trace of these messages.

Once a message is older than 30 days, iOS will remove it from the Recently Deleted folder and delete it forever. Apple mentions that it may take up to 40 days on some occasions for the messages to get deleted.

How long can you view a message inside Recently Deleted?

As mentioned above, messages and conversations you move to the Recently Deleted folder will be accessible inside the Messages app for up to 30 days from the date you deleted a message from the Messages screen. After this time expires, the Messages app will permanently delete the expired messages from your account and you won’t be able to view them or recover them from any device.

If a message you moved to the Recently Deleted folder is nearing its expiration date, you can move it back to the main messages screen and then delete it again to renew its expiration date to another 30 days.

How to find Recently Deleted Messages on your iPhone

The messages you deleted from the Messages app won’t appear alongside your active conversations on the app. Instead, they will be accessible inside a separate Recently Deleted folder that can be accessed within the Messages app. To find your recently deleted messages, open the Messages app on your iPhone.

Inside Messages, tap on Filters at the top left corner.

On the next screen, you’ll see all the different filters that your texts are categorized into. From here, tap on Recently Deleted at the bottom.

In the Recently Deleted screen that appears, you’ll see a list of messages you deleted in the last 30 days.

You won’t be able to open a conversation or a message directly from this screen. If you wish to open a deleted message, you will need to recover them back to your conversations.

How to recover or delete Recently Deleted Messages from your iPhone

iOS 16 allows you to recover any text or conversation you deleted in the last 30 days from the Recently Deleted section or you can choose to delete them permanently from your iPhone if you no longer wish to keep them.

Recover messages from Recently Deleted

In the Recently Deleted screen, you’ll see a list of messages that you deleted within the last 30 days. If you wish to recover a message from this screen and send them back to your active conversations, select the message from this list. You can select multiple messages from this list and when you make your section, you will see a blue tick icon appear on the left-hand side of the selected messages.

Once you’ve made your selection, tap on Recover at the bottom right corner.

To confirm this action, select Recover Messages in the prompt that appears at the bottom.

The selected messages will now move back to the main conversations screen inside the Messages app.

You can also recover all the messages from the Recently Deleted screen and move them back to your conversations by tapping on Recover All at the bottom right corner.

To confirm this action, select Recover Messages in the prompt that appears at the bottom.

This will recover all of your recently deleted messages and move them back to the messages screen; thus emptying the Recently Deleted section.

Delete messages from Recently Deleted

Inside the Recently Deleted screen, you’ll see a list of messages that you deleted within the last 30 days. To delete one of the messages from this section, select a message you want to remove and a blue tick icon will appear on its left-hand side. You can select as many messages as you want to delete to remove them in bulk.

Once you’ve made your selection, tap on Delete at the bottom left corner.

You will see a prompt at the bottom asking you to confirm your action. In this prompt, select Delete Messages.

When you do that, the selected messages will be deleted from all your Apple device and will not be recoverable at any point in the future.

You can also delete all of the messages you moved to the Recently Deleted section by tapping on Delete All at the bottom left corner.

In the familiar prompt that shows up, tap on Delete Messages to confirm your action.

Since the Recently Deleted section has been emptied, you will be taken back to the list of filters where you will no longer see a Recently Deleted folder on the screen.

I cannot see messages I moved to Recently Deleted. Why?

The Recently Deleted screen will show all the messages you deleted from your iPhone as well as the ones you removed from other Apple devices. The feature requires you to run on iOS 16 or later; meaning this section won’t be accessible on devices running on iOS 15 or earlier. If you wish to move your messages to the Recently Deleted section, you thus need to make sure you’re deleting them from an iPhone on iOS 16.

In case you cannot see the messages you deleted inside the Recently Deleted section, it could be because:

The message you’re looking for has already reached its expiration date (i.e. 30 days) and iOS has automatically removed it permanently from your iPhone.

You had manually recovered the message that you deleted before which means this message will be accessible inside the main Messages screen alongside your active conversations.

You have already deleted the message (intentionally or by mistake) from the Recently Deleted section at which point there’s no way you can recover it back.

Messages you deleted before updating to iOS 16 won’t show up inside the Recently Deleted folder as they may have been removed permanently from your iPhone.

If you’re unable to access messages you recently deleted:

You need to look for them inside the Recently Deleted section as instructed earlier in this post.

The Recently Deleted screen is unavailable because your iPhone is running on iOS 15 or an older version.

That’s all you need to know about Recently Deleted Messages on iOS 16.

Redownload & Reinstall Any Ios App On Iphone Or Ipad

You can redownload and reinstall any previously purchased apps that have since been deleted from an iOS device, even if you deleted them a long time ago or never even installed them in the first place. As long as the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is using the same Apple ID where the original app was bought and downloaded with, the re-download process is quick and simple.

And for clarification, yes, re-downloading an app will re-install that app into iOS. You can use this to reinstall apps you have deleted, or with apps that are assigned to an Apple ID but have not yet been installed onto a particular iOS device using the same Apple ID. That means you can download an app to your iPhone that you previously downloaded or bought onto a different iPhone or iPad, as long as it remains compatible.

This works the same on all versions of iOS to reinstall an app, though the exact steps are slightly different on iOS releases and the versions of the App Store, and the appearance can be slightly different too.

How to Re-Download & Re-Install Apps on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

You can redownload iOS apps via the App Store in modern iOS releases, including iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10, iOS 9, iOS 8, and newer, on either iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, by doing as instructed here:

Open the App Store application in iOS

Go to the “Updates” tab

Choose “Not on this iPhone” (or “Not on this iPad”) to see the list of apps not currently installed on the active iOS device

Repeat with other apps to redownload as necessary

That’s all there is to it. As long as the app(s) were once downloaded or purchased using the same Apple ID, you can easily access and redownload any app this way.

The only exception to this is when an app has been removed from the App Store completely either pulled by the developer or by Apple, but that is quite rare.

Redownloading & Reinstalling iOS Apps in Older iOS 6 or iOS 5 Versions

Older iOS devices with prior versions of system software can also redownload apps just as easily, though the appearance looks slightly different as are the steps:

Launch the “App Store” on the iOS device

Tap on the “Purchased” tab at the bottom of the screen (iPhone & iPod users tap “Updates” and then “Purchased”)

Tap “Not On This iPad” or “Not On This iPhone” to see the list of apps that are not installed on the device

Find the app you wish to redownload and reinstall and tap the download icon, it’s a cloud with an arrow on it

Keep in mind that newer versions of iOS look different from older releases of system software, but the functionality remains the same.

This is what you’d do if you want to reinstall an app you deleted to quickly free up some space on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod that has run out of storage capacity. Likewise, this is the same procedure to restore an app that was accidentally deleted.
