Suggested January 2024 Teamwork Takes Teachers To The Moon
This summer, I got the opportunity to visit NASA Kennedy Space Center through a generous grant from the General Electric Fund and the National Science Teachers Association. The partnership sponsored around a hundred of us to go to Cocoa Beach, Florida, and partake in a series of intense professional development sessions on campus. As a math teacher, I wasn’t exactly sure what my purpose was there, but I knew two things: I wanted a rocket shuttle to take home, and I wanted to pretend to be an astronaut when I went back home.
Sadly, I couldn’t take a shuttle home.
Instead, I partook in one of the most relevant PD sessions I ever attended. The premise of the workshops was to build rovers with kits and use all available tools to create a robot that would park in one tight spot. Here, I share some of my learning from that week.Expertise Should Always Be Valued
Our party consisted of two groups: returning teachers who had already worked on these projects last year and new teachers who hadn’t the slightest idea what they would be doing. I was in the former group. During our first meeting, we spent time building our rovers and making sure they worked. My pair — another math teacher and I — had a hard time just remembering how to put the pieces together to form a rover. After that, however, things went much faster.
Why? Because our test to make sure that our rover worked was to make it drive a few feet, turn left, drive another couple of feet, turn right, drive another few feet, then stop. This involved a bit of angle measurement, and programming. While my partner and I weren’t master rover-builders, we knew our way around a ruler and a protractor. Within an hour, our rover passed the prerequisites and was ready for prime time.Embrace the Unknown
While the veteran group worked on their rovers, the new group worked on scanning a surface and creating a map of a given square space. The purpose for creating this map was to get the rover to a given point based on the mapmakers’ accuracy. Obviously, the new group had to develop a method for getting as much information as they could by using their rover’s scanners to calculate altitudes and slopes. My pair had to depend on the map we were given — and nothing else.
In other words, we had to see what the rover saw, and work through its point of view.
In many ways, this taught us to embrace the unknown. So many variables go into actual space exploration that we can only estimate based on the information given to us. As learners, we could only control what we knew given the tools we had: a rover, a calculator, a ruler and an eight-bit map.Playing to Everyone’s Strengths
The temptation for the returning teachers was to take over the project and make the new teachers stand aside. However, they had just acquired a set of skills: programming. They knew how to create loops and send commands in the program comfortably. All they needed was a plan on how to approach this “map” and the mathematics behind it. Naturally, my pair took the lead and started plugging away. We narrated everything as we did it so that everyone else could jump in and contribute when necessary. When we had a refined diagram, the new teachers jumped in and programmed the robot with little help from us.
We played to everyone’s strengths in the group and made sure that they all felt invited.
From there, we set the robot on its mission. Needless to say, within a few minutes, we got it to work consistently. We’d laid out a plan, and now everyone felt comfortable with our plan.
Most importantly, we all felt like engineers. We didn’t “win” anything for having completed the project first or second. The fact that we did a simplified version of what engineers and rocket scientists do for a living gave us enough exhilaration. While other groups had different results, I noticed that, when we stuck to a few key principles for completing these projects, we all felt like winners.
But it still would have been nice to drive down Broadway in the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Oh well.

Before President Kennedy promised America the Moon, NASA was already planning its manned lunar landing mission. What the spacecraft would look like and what rocket would launch it were major questions without obvious answers, but for the engineers at NASA’s Langley Research Centre, rendezvous — having two spacecraft meet and connect in space — was expected to be a key maneuver. The only unknown was whether the rendezvous would happen in Earth or lunar orbit, though in 1961 the former was the preferred method. Earth Orbit Rendezvous is the method John Bird sketched out in 1961 with the caption “To the Moon with C-1s or Bust.” Here’s what this mission would have looked like.
The first missions to the Moon were designed with one central assumption: that the entire spacecraft would land on the Moon, launch from its surface, then return to Earth. This meant, by default, that the spacecraft would be huge and heavy. It would have to carry all the fuel for the multistage mission and provisions to set up a launch site on the Moon without the help of specially trained ground crews.
Following this model, early estimates said the spacecraft could be as large as the Atlas rocket, the nearly 100-foot launch vehicle that sent the last four Mercury missions into orbit. To launch a spacecraft that big directly to the Moon required a massive rocket like Nova, the never-built rocket with eight engines in its first stage, three more than the Saturn V eventually had.
The alternative mission had astronauts assemble the same spacecraft in Earth orbit, a mission that required complicated rendezvous maneuvers but took a simpler path to orbit. Because each piece is lighter than the whole spacecraft, NASA could launch the mission on multiple smaller rockets. This is the mission, properly called an Earth Orbit rendezvous mission, that John Bird sketched out.
John Bird was an engineer at Langley, and in the early 1960s he worked on designs for a dedicated lunar landing vehicle as part of the centre’s studies into a potential Lunar Orbit Rendezvous mission (the mission profile eventually adopted by Apollo). Among Bird’s areas of expertise was the intricate business of assembling a spacecraft in Earth orbit. He became enough of an expert in the subject to be the voice of Earth orbital rendezvous maneuvers during meeting and presentations.
Bird’s sketch shows an Earth Orbit Rendezvous spacecraft configuration wherein the lunar spacecraft is assembled using ten C-1 rockets, the rocket that eventually became the Saturn I. According to this plan, NASA would have needed ten C-1s to launch this mission.
Bird’s “To the Moon or Bust” Sketch
Not only would it have been a challenge to launch all ten C-1s in quick enough succession to keep the mission running on schedule, it would have been a real feat for a crew to undertake all the rendezvous maneuvers to get every piece lined up in the right spot and docked. And all that before going to the Moon for a landing mission! Still, launching multiple rockets was preferred method for a lot of NASA centers. It forced development of rendezvous capability and promised jobs for the men and women who built the rockets.
“To the Moon with C-1s or Bust” was evidently the theme of the day at Langley on May 22, 1961, the day John Bird drew this sketch. These hand drawn concepts for missions are such a fascinating look into futures that didn’t materialize that they’re well worth sharing.

It’s time to say it. Our major problems are caused by the traditional banking system, which is getting worse by the day.
First, there is no representation of data and financial security. Second, transaction costs are insane, and bank transfers take plenty of time – especially when our family and friends need them the most.
Not to say how vulnerable individuals became, as the bank’s workers obstructed their funds for no reason.
We have an extremely unsteady global economy. But happily, Rewardiqa represents the next step in the financial system with its completely decentralized banking structure.
Our Vision & Mission
Time connects us all irrespective of our origin or social rank. Time is limited. Time is finite. We cannot retrieve or prolong time. In today’s world, our time is mostly controlled externally.
Time is controlled by our jobs, our customers, our social obligations. We believe that every person in this world has the right to be in control of their own time. Implementing this right is our vision.
Therefore, we aim to create an equilibrium between time and money. We are establishing a global Decentralized Finance Platform. People around the world will be able to make real money by staking, lending, or borrowing Rewardiqa & major Coins such as ETH, ADA, DIA, LINK, YFI, BNB, and so on. Our mission is to give every person access to this opportunity no matter whether they come from a village in Vietnam, the outskirts of Ber-lin, or downtown Manhattan.
What is Rewardiqa?
Rewardiqa is a global Reward app that combines some of the best features of money market protocols, while offering its own unique features, enabling users to enjoy the promises of #DEFI. Earn money wherever and whenever you desire, earn cryptocurrency absolutely risk-free, whether it is Bitcoin, Ethereum, or our own Rewardiqa token.
Rewardiqa is a well-known crypto project, they have a big community and more than 30k users on their reward app, you can check their token value and updates on Coinmarketcap
Effective global inclusion can only happen when all platforms participants can negotiate and settle efficiently
The ability to earn and improve one’s condition is a basic human right
Efficiency is about respecting the most valuable resource of all time
What financial products do they have?
Rewardiqa conquered many people due to its wide variety of financial products, which expands crypto usability.
Not so long ago, this business technique was available just with the intervention of third parties. However, with DeFi expanding its potential, Rewardiqa offers it on the blockchain as well.
If you are not familiar with this term, think about this simple scenario:
You lend some crypto to someone, expending an interest. The borrower lends those cryptocurrencies to someone else, and so on. In the end, you get compound interest. Simple, right?
Vaults are a new generation of crypto wallets that are not connected to any kind of network – adding a new security layer to your account. They are perfect if you are planning to hold your assets for a long-term profit.
Lending markets are pretty similar to lending on banks but without third parties. Not just that you can set yourself free from the inconsistent picky behavior of bank employees, but it’s a lot faster. The lending and borrowing activities are done instantly, with no need for someone to validate them.
These are perfect for people who like variety, moving from one platform to another. They are a new type of cryptocurrencies that preserve ownership rights, are transferable and authentic.
With promising companies like Rewardiqa, the DeFi technology will soon conquer more and more economic enthusiasts, bringing closer a future that is more financially healthy, safer, quicker, and of course, carefree.
Though the Apollo lunar modules were built for the sole purpose of landing two men on the surface of the Moon, their usefulness didn’t end after ascending from the lunar surface. NASA used the spent spacecraft for science, directing these modules for controlled crashed into the Moon. These crashes caused moonquakes, and scientists measured the vibrations moving through the Moon and found it rings like a bell.
The real goal of the seismic experiments was to figure out the Moon’s internal structure. Measuring how long the reverberations last, how powerful they are, and how big the waves get can reveal what the Moon is made of. Remote seismic stations were instrumental in this investigation, and they were deployed as part of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Packages that astronauts set up on the Moon on Apollos 12, 14, 15, and 16; different versions were deployed on Apollos 11 and 17. From when they were first set up to when they were remotely shut down in 1977, these ALSEPs recorded all kinds of seismic activity. The data was sent back to receiving stations on Earth where the signal was magnified by 10 million so scientists could interpret the signal.
Apollo 12’s ALSEP
Apollo 12’s ALSEP on the lunar surface.
But something interesting happened on Apollo 12. After Pete Conrad and Al Bean landed at the Ocean of Storms on November 14, 1969, they left the lunar surface 142 hours into the flight. Eight hours later, they were reunited with Dick Gordon in the command module and sent their spent lunar module back to the Moon. It impacted about 40 miles away from the Apollo 12 landing site with the force of one ton of TNT. The resulting shockwave built up and peaked in just eight minutes. Then it took an hour to fully dissipate.
Something similar happened on Apollo 13. The S-IVB impacted the Moon 85 miles from Apollo 12’s ALSEP — CMP Jack Swigert joked at the time that it was the only thing on that mission to go right. It hit with the force of 11 and a half tons of TNT. This translated to a seismic impact peaked after seven minute with shockwaves 30 times greater and four times longer than those from Apollo 12’s LM impact.
The vibrations from these two impacts lasted longer than scientists expected, far longer than any equivalent vibrations last on Earth. It was almost as if the Moon was ringing like a bell. This strange result forced scientists to think differently about the Moon and its composition.
Apollo 13’s S-IVB impact
The crater left by Apollo 13’s S-IVB impact.
It turns out that these impacts were characteristic of one of four types of moonquakes scientists studied from ALSEP data. Some moonquakes originate deep below the surface because of lunar tides, some are thermal quakes caused by the Sun thawing the frozen surface at the start of a new lunar day, and others are caused by impacting meteors. The fourth kind of moonquake is a shallow moonquake occurring roughly a couple of tens of miles below the surface. The lunar module and S-IVB both produced this kind of vibration, and these are the most violent types of moonquakes.
Between 1972 and 1977, scientists recorded 28 shallow moonquakes registering as high as 5.5 on the Richter scale. On Earth, that will move heavy furniture and crack plaster, but the vibrations usually die down in a matter of minutes.
It all comes down to water. There’s moisture in the materials that makes up our planet, expanding their structure. As energy from an earthquake moves through our planet, that damp material acts like a sponge, absorbing the energy of the waves and ultimately deadening their effects. But the Moon is dry, cool, and rigid, more like a solid rock than a sponge. So even if a moonquake is less intense, there’s nothing to deaden the vibrations. They just go back and forth through the body until the solid stone eventually stops them. The “ringing bell” is the shock waves reverberating through that stone.

Knightmare Tower is setting the standard for the vertical version of the endless runner genre with a game that is clever, exciting, and impossible to put down…Design
The game is full of bright colors and entertaining music. The graphics are cartoony, but not cutesy (although those spiky bats are pretty adorable). The background is colorful and changes with each new height you reach. The soundtrack is perfectly matched for the intensity of the game. It almost sounds like you are watching the action scenes in ET: The Extra Terrestrial.
As you travel up to the tallest reaches of the tower, you will complete achievements, like “Split apart 25 monsters,” or “Survive for 25 seconds without dashing.”Gameplay
When you take off from your rocket for the first time, pay attention to the launch meter on the right. When it reaches the brightest red section at the very top, tap the screen to take off. If you hit a perfect launch, you’ll go higher.
You’ll want to go as high as possible because, eventually, the lava will catch up to you. The faster you go, the less likely it is that the lava will invade your territory.
The knight only sits atop the rocket for a very short period of time. Then, it is your job to keep him in the air by splitting monsters in two. The monsters float by horizontally and you can aim below by tilting your device. When you are directly above your enemy, tap the screen to attack.
If you miss your attack, you will fall, but you won’t die. Your trusty rocket is just out of view below and will help you travel back up. You will never suffer consequences of falling. However, falling does slow you down and the lava gets closer.
When you attack multiple monsters without missing, you will generate combo points that will end up triggering your dash. Dashing gets you a few extra meters above the lava that is quickly rising to your location.
When you break through a wooden floor, you are in the room of a kidnapped princess. Rescuing princesses yield great rewards. There are 10 princesses, each with a different bonus that is unlocked when you save them.
Between each game, you can buy upgrades to your weapons, armor, speed and rocket launch with the coins you’ve collected during your vertical runs. You can also upgrade bonuses, like increased luck, improved attack speed, better speed boost, and less loss of speed when falling. The potion section is expensive, but it unlocks new potions that will help you in the game. For example, the Haste potion boosts your attack speed and Harden makes you invulnerable.
The more equipped you are in battle, the better your chances are to reach the next princess and unlock new bonuses. There is also a boss to fight at the very end of the game. However, I have not made it far enough to battle the ultimate foe. I’m about halfway there right now.The Good The Bad Value
Knightmare Tower costs $2.99. In my opinion, that is too expensive. The game is comparable to endless runners like Temple Run and Agent Dash, which are $0.99 and free respectively. That being said, there are no in-app purchases in this game, so you won’t ever end up spending more money than you planned.
This game would be better suited at $1.99. But think of it this way, the development company, Juicy Beast, is a team of only four people. So, that extra dollar is going toward an independent development company who is just trying to put food on the table. Conclusion
If you like endless runner games, this is a great new addition to the genre. While it follows many of the traditional gameplay themes, like unlocking items and upgrading your runner, it is unique in some ways because most endless runners don’t focus on attacking enemies in order to keep moving. Even though it is a pricey game for the genre, it is worth the price for its exciting and fun gameplay. This app is available for the iPhone and iPad. Download it in the App Store today.Related Apps
