When I first heard about Triggers: Creating Behavior That Lasts–Becoming the Person You Want to Be (affiliate link) by Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, I instantly told the SEJ team I wanted to cover it for SEJ Book Club. I’ve been a fan of Marshall Goldsmith since reading another of his excellent books, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful.

Additionally, the title Triggers drew me in because it reminded me of another book about habits that I’ve read recently—Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin—which was one of my favorites of 2023. Both books deal with common “markers” to make a change. The only difference is identifying triggers to change versus identifying habits to make your goals more attainable.

Dr. Goldsmith’s book was a great “read” (I listened to it on audiobook) from beginning to end. According to Goldsmith’s YouTube channel:

A behavioral trigger is any stimulus that impacts our behavior. Triggers are not inherently “good” or “bad.” What matters is our response to them. This may be the greatest payoff of identifying and defining our triggers: no matter how extreme the circumstances, when it comes to our behavior, we always have a choice!

A sentence in that description nicely wraps up the book:

What matters is our response to them.

This was a recurring theme throughout the book.

A main cornerstone of Triggers was the concept of accountability through daily questions that you are asked by a trusted colleague or paid accountability person. These questions are designed to make you reflect daily on how you did that day dealing with your triggers and what goals you are working toward. They can be answered on a sliding scale from 1-10 or even as a yes or no. Keeping track of the patterns in your answers can highlight improvement or areas that need to change.

For instance, one example was the account of a young woman who wanted to lose a large amount of weight while still living a happy life surrounded with family and friends. Every evening, her uncle would call with her questions and she’d answer on how well she did from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest). These were things like,

Did I do my best to be physically active today?

Did I eat the best I could today?

Did I make an effort to connect with my friends and family?

And so on.

The numbered answers gave the woman specific data to chart so she could identify changes easily. For instance, if she got all 3s in the exercise category, she could identify that she wasn’t doing her best to be physically active for the week. Going forward, she could decide to schedule out her workouts like she does meetings or dinner with a friend and stay accountable.

For instance, if we go back to the weight loss example, if the woman noticed she got 9s on her eating habits every day she ate a smoothie for lunch, it would show that smoothies are an easy way to fit in a healthier eating pattern in her daily life. She could then make it a priority to make smoothies ahead of time or bring the ingredients to work each day.

The Wheel of Change

Another important concept in Dr. Goldsmith’s book is the wheel of change. It is the cyclical process you can go through to make changes in your life:

The quadrants of the wheel are:

Creating: Who is the new me I want to create?

Preserving: What is it about me that I want to keep?

Accepting: What do I need to accept in my life?

Eliminating: What do I need to eliminate?

The book and above video go into each aspect of the wheel in more detail, but identifying these key areas in your life is the best way to make a change. Once you do this, asking yourself daily questions will help you understand how what you’re doing affects what you accomplish.

For instance, let’s say that every day you go out to lunch with your old high school friends to complain about life. When doing this you rarely stick to your diet and end up in a terrible mood, which is something you’ve identified as a needed change in your “Creating” quadrant. If your friends are always disrupting your goals, it might be time to decrease, or altogether stop, hanging out with them. Looking for specific patterns when something makes you act negatively can help you identify what you need to either accept or eliminate.

While these are just some of the concepts mentioned in the book, I found it to be a highly enjoyable read and would not only recommend the book, but Dr. Goldsmith’s two blogs and YouTube channel as well. They all do a great job explaining key concepts when it comes to behavioral change and achieving success.

Iconoid Helps You Better Manage Your Windows Desktop Icons

Decluttering is important, be it your room or your desktop. A clean and tidy desktop is not just pleasing to the eyes, but it also increases your productivity. It is always easier to find things on a clean desktop than on one cluttered with numerous useless icons. While working, we don’t realize that we are saving the files and folders on the desktop; as a matter of fact, we intentionally save our important files and folders on the desktop for easy access. Iconoid is a very lightweight simple application that takes less than a minute to land on your PC. With a quick and short installation wizard, the application gets installed and is ready to use. At first instance, you might find the interface a bit confusing, and you might take some time to figure out the features, but it is very easy once you check it properly.

The Tray tab is of course for the system tray options. You can adjust the tray icon settings where you can show or hide the tray icon, change the background options, adjust the icon positions and more. There is another option of Do the icon Dance, but it somehow didn’t work for me, so I am not very clear about what it is.

Iconoid Options

The Options tab lets you decide whether to start Iconoid with Windows or now, to display the tools tips or not, enable window fading, etc. There is also an option of selecting the Hot Keys, exporting and importing the settings which mean to save your settings on your PC as registry files.

Other settings include the separate icon positioning, use of relative positions, special placements for icons, integrating the Iconoid app to Explorer, etc.

Overall, it is a simple, lightweight application that works quickly. Any settings you apply take effect immediately. The application hardly puts any load on your system memory or the CPU. I didn’t face any crashes while testing the application, and nor did it hang. So, if you want to get more control over your desktop icons, you can download the application here. The application works on Windows 11/10 too.

Uncle Sam makes a move

Despite the prevailing optimism among holders regarding Bitcoin’s future prospects, there is a possibility of an impending negative shift. This is because on 2 July, the United States Government dispatched approximately 9,800 Bitcoins to Coinbase.

Nevertheless, the timing of these forthcoming batches remains uncertain, given the considerable interval observed between the initial and second batches.

As of today, the United States Government possesses an estimated Bitcoin balance of 194,188 BTC, valued at approximately $5.96 billion. This amount accounts for approximately 1% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply.

Deja Vu?

It is worth noting that prior to this incident, the U.S. government had previously executed a similar maneuver involving its holdings. On 7 March, the government initiated its initial transfer, dispatching approximately 9,900 BTC to Coinbase.

A subsequent court filing confirmed that the aforementioned 9,900 BTC was successfully sold later on 14 March. Additionally, it was stated that the remaining seized BTC, totaling around 41,000 BTC, would be liquidated in four subsequent installments.

This series of actions had a profound impact on market sentiment, leading to a substantial decline in funding rates. Interestingly, this decline prompted a notable number of investors to engage in short-selling of Bitcoin.

Despite these circumstances, the price of Bitcoin only experienced a modest decrease, dropping from approximately 21,000 to 19,000, reflecting a marginal fluctuation of 2,000.

Following this, according to CryptoQuants’ data, a phenomenon known as a significant short squeeze transpired.

In the case of Bitcoin, when investors who shorted Bitcoin witnessed its price rise, they were forced to buy Bitcoin. This ends up driving the price up even more.

These events usually create higher market volatility as well.

How will the market react this time around?

At press time, the number of long positions taken for BTC outweighed the shorts according to data provided by Coinglass. However, the percentage of long positions was steadily declining.

In the last few hours, the percentage of long positions taken in favor of Bitcoin fell from 57.22% to 51.77%.

Furthermore, over the past few days, the ATM (At-The-Money) 7-day Implied Volatility of Bitcoin experienced an increase from 36.2% to 40.25%.

A high IV suggests that the market expects significant price fluctuations in the future. This indicates increased uncertainty and the potential for larger price swings in the underlying asset.

Traders and investors may thus interpret a high IV as an indication of higher risk or the possibility of lucrative trading opportunities.

Despite the uncertainty that could be caused by the U.S. government’s actions, the overall outlook for Bitcoin on the social front remained positive at the time of writing.

Santiment’s weighted sentiment indicator showed that the negative sentiment for Bitcoin was declining rapidly.

One major reason why optimism for Bitcoin remained high despite these sell-offs would be the institutional interest being shown for BTC.

Institutions keep pushing

Firms including BlackRock, WisdomTree, and 21Shares have been diligently pursuing approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the launch of a Bitcoin spot ETF.

Despite facing initial rejections, these companies persisted and made necessary revisions to their proposals, consistently submitting updated versions to the SEC.

According to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, $30 trillion worth of capital could suddenly unlock for the Bitcoin market if a Bitcoin spot ETF was to be approved by the SEC. This move will not only benefit Bitcoin but also the crytp0 markets as a whole.

Only time will tell whether this event will awaken the bears, or if institutional interest will continue to support the king coin.

Any project developed on Solana will be able to smoothly leverage the capabilities of Polygon’s scaling solution using the newly announced SVM. As per Polygon, the testnet for Polygon SVM is expected to go live during the first quarter of 2023.

Realistic or not, here’s MATIC market cap in BTC’s terms

What was MATIC’s response like?

These updates did not have an impact on MATIC’s chart, which was painted red, thanks to the bearish market trend.

According to CoinMarketCap, MATIC’s price registered a decline of more than 6% in the last 24 hours, and at press time, it was trading at $1.27 with a market capitalization of over $11 billion.

The same remained true with MATIC’s on-chain performance, as most of the metrics looked bearish.

For instance, MATIC’s MVRV Ratio registered a downtick lately.

Meanwhile, CryptoQuant’s data revealed that the net deposits on exchanges were high compared to the 7-day average, which is a negative signal as it indicates high selling pressure.

In addition to that, MATIC’s active addresses also decreased. Thus, suggesting fewer users were participating in the network.

Nonetheless, a few of the metrics were working in MATIC’s favor. The network growth remained consistently high throughout the last week.

MATIC’s popularity also increased, as was evident from the spike in its social volume. Its exchange reserve was also declining, which was a bullish signal.

Interestingly, MATIC has remained popular among whales, as it recently became one of the top 2000 Ethereum whales’ most used smart contracts.

Therefore, despite the current negative price action, the possibility of a trend reversal can’t be ruled out considering whales’ interest and the aforementioned updates.

Con 12,8 mm de grosor, el Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 no es tan delgado como el Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 del año pasado (11,9 mm), pero sí un poco menos. La recompensa es que da la sensación de ser extremadamente robusto. A pesar de que la característica principal de su diseño es que puedes girar la pantalla desde una posición cerrada hasta colocarla espalda con espalda con el teclado, parece un portátil “normal”.

Por defecto, se ajusta dinámicamente entre 60 y 120 Hz, pero si se cambia a 120 Hz, el desplazamiento es suave como la seda. Esto afectará a la duración de la batería de forma crónica, como explicaré más adelante, pero la opción es muy bienvenida para cuando estés enchufado a la red eléctrica.

Sin duda, la mayor contribución de esta generación es una frecuencia de actualización de 120 Hz”

Aunque esta frecuencia de refresco es lo más llamativo de la pantalla del Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360, no es lo único que impresiona. Se trata de un gran panel de 16 pulgadas con una relación de aspecto de 16:10, que proporciona un lienzo de tamaño considerable para todo, desde la edición de imágenes hasta la realización de bocetos.

También es extremadamente nítida, con una resolución de 2880 x 1800 o 3K, lo que supone una gran mejora con respecto a la Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 de 1080p.

Al tratarse de un panel AMOLED, cabe esperar negros profundos y colores vibrantes. Registré una cobertura de gama del 99,9 % sRGB, 95,3 % Adobe RGB y 99,4 % DCI P3 en el perfil de color predeterminado Auto, que es muy potente y lo hace adecuado para la mayoría de trabajos creativos.

Un brillo máximo de 358 nits no es nada del otro mundo, así que no es el portátil que debes comprar si piensas trabajar mucho al aire libre en los meses de verano. Sin embargo, es perfecto para interiores.

En cuanto al sonido, incorpora un sistema de cuatro altavoces AKG con dos woofers de 5W y dos tweeters de 2W, además de soporte Dolby Atmos. El sonido es nítido y claro, pero carece de los graves y la gran amplitud de un MacBook Pro, por lo que no me sentí inclinado a escuchar música sin conectar unos auriculares, pero tiene más capacidad de audio que muchos portátiles.

También tiene un sensor de huellas dactilares decente integrado en el botón de encendido físico en la esquina superior derecha, que demostró ser extremadamente fiable durante mi tiempo con el portátil.

No estoy del todo contento con el trackpad del Book 3, sin embargo. Con todo, no llega ni de lejos a la sutil brillantez de un touchpad de MacBook, que es el nivel con el que Samsung debe ser juzgado dado su pedigrí y precio.

Donde Samsung da en el clavo es con su lápiz óptico S Pen, que viene incluido con todos los Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360. Se guarda en la tapa de la tableta. Se guarda en la tapa del portátil mediante imanes cuando no está en uso, lo que no es el accesorio más seguro cuando estás fuera de casa.

Naturalmente, este no es un portátil para juegos, sin ninguna de las opciones de GPU discreta del modelo Ultra. Los títulos 3D más antiguos, como Portal 2, se ejecutan sin problemas, pero cualquier cosa vagamente reciente no se ejecutará de forma óptima. Pude jugar a la sección abierta de Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order con la configuración Media por defecto, pero se producían frecuentes parones y tartamudeos cuando se cargaban varios elementos cinemáticos.

Esto fue con la pantalla ajustada a una frecuencia de actualización adaptativa y con HDR desactivado, que es el estado por defecto. Con 120Hz y HDR activo, el portátil sólo aguantaría 4 horas de una jornada de trabajo tan típica.

Nuestro test habitual de vídeo 720p en bucle, con el brillo de pantalla a 120 nits, duró 14h 26m antes de apagarse. Es una media hora menos que el Samsung Galaxy Book 2 360 y está muy por debajo del LG Gram 16 (por no hablar de los MacBook), pero por lo demás está lejos de ser el peor resultado que hemos visto.

A la hora de recargarlo, Samsng incluye su habitual ladrillo de 65W. Registré una tasa de carga del 37% durante los primeros 30 minutos desde un estado apagado. No es tan rápido como el Galaxy Book 2 360, pero está bien para el tamaño y las especificaciones del portátil. Una carga completa tardará algo menos de 1 hora y 45 minutos.

Con todo, este es quizás el aspecto fundamental que impide que el Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 sea el gran todoterreno que podría ser. Si Samsung consiguiera diseñar un 2 en 1 capaz de aguantar una jornada completa de trabajo con una sola carga, estaría en el buen camino.

Samsung no juega con el software de Windows 11 en sus portátiles ni la mitad de lo que juega con sus teléfonos inteligentes, pero usted todavía consigue un poco de hinchazón de Samsung.

Las aplicaciones más útiles incluyen Samsung Notes, que combina una aplicación normal para tomar notas con la integración de S Pen. El Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 es quizás el convertible 2 en 1 sin compromisos que hemos probado. Su diseño refinado hace que el portátil parezca y se sienta como un portátil normal de tamaño completo, pero la pantalla puede girar 360 grados y el S Pen incluido lo convierte en una delicia para el artista.

El componente clave es la nueva pantalla AMOLED de 16 pulgadas. Con una resolución 3K y una frecuencia de actualización de 120 Hz, es tan fluida como nítida y vibrante.
