Suggested January 2024 Ultimate Ears Boom 2 Bluetooth Speaker: The Best Gets Better

One of my absolute favorite Bluetooth speakers got a huge update today. The UE Boom 2 is an upgraded version of the iconic portable Bluetooth speaker from Logitech’s Ultimate Ears division. Originally released in 2013, the Boom set a new standard for Portable Bluetooth speakers with its “cupholder friendly” and colorful design, great acoustics, and iOS/Android apps.

In recent months UE has released a much bigger, more expensive MegaBoom and a much smaller, cheaper UE Roll. Both are waterproof and extremely rugged and if you’d had to have guessed, you’d be right in assuming the Boom would get these same features.

And it has. IPX 7 waterproofing means you can not only take it with you into the shower but you can drop the Boom 2 in the pool or bathtub without damage. It is also more powerful with a 100-foot wireless range, 15 hour battery life, and 25% louder and better sound than its predecessor. The UE Boom 2 also now includes a new tap control that allows you to start, pause and skip songs, without needing to have your phone in-hand.

I’ve been using the UE Boom 2 for the past week and I think this speaker is a big deal…

UE Boom 2, Key Details:

25 percent louder, better sound

Longer wireless range ~100-feet

Waterproof (IPX 7) design

10-15 hour battery life

Size/shape of a water bottle, so stick it in your bike’s water bottle holder or clip it to your bag

tap control that allows you to start, pause and skip songs, without needing to have your phone in-hand

$199 shipped starting later this month, pre-order here

The Boom 2 comes in the same type of case as the MegaBoom which opens to reveal a “same as the previous Boom” package with a florescent yellow AC power adapter and MicroUSB cable.

Most of my gripes around the UE Boom 2 are around this cable and connection. It is square at the tip so it is a little easier to pop in than a generic MicroUSB cable which is a pain in the ass. When it is charging however, you can’t stand the Boom 2 in its default upright position. There is also an AUX port on the bottom which also foils attempts to have the speaker sit upright. The keychain lock also sits on the bottom.  If any of these things are used, the speaker must be on its side and boy does it roll. Oh, and you can’t keep your phone charged with this MicroUSB outlet like you can with some other speakers.

That’s pretty much the beginning and end of the gripes, however. The package is much improved over the previous edition, which was a great piece of equipment.  I can verify that the sound is noticeably improved over the original UE Boom and more into the Bose Soundlink Mini 2 territory. The bass wasn’t all the way there but it is as close as you’ll get in a speaker of this size and weight.

I love the Logitech UE Boom app which still allows you to see battery indicator, set music alarms, and pair multiple speakers in better than stereo but not quite as robust as Sonos type configurations.

Compare to competition?

To recap, the improvements to the UE Boom 2 are the following

Is 25 percent louder and better sound

Has a longer wireless range of 100-feet

Has a completely waterproof (IPX 7) design

Has a 15-hour all-day, all-night battery life

Is the size of a water bottle, so stick it in your bike’s water bottle holder or clip it to your bag

Plus, it features a new and innovative tap control that allows you to start, pause and skip songs, without needing to have your phone in-hand

To me, this puts the Boom at the top of the pack except for certain scenarios:

The $200 price tag is significant. If you want to spend less and get almost as great of product, grab a JBL Charge 2 for $100-$150 or a UE Roll for $100.

If you want the absolute best sound, I still like the bass in the Bose Soundlink Mini 2 which is a fine Bluetooth speaker but isn’t rugged or really built for the outdoors. On the other hand, it looks much more sophisticated than the Cherrybomb, Yeti, Phantom, GreenMachine, Tropical and BrainFreeze colors of the UE Boom.

You can grab a Boom at UE’s website now for $199.

Huawei P30 Pro Vs Huawei P20 Pro: The Best Gets Better

Specs vs specs

Enough techno-waffle, if you’re interested in a new HUAWEI phone then you’re probably someone who likes to take the odd picture or two. Quite a lot has changed with their cameras between the HUAWEI P20 Pro and new P30 Pro, although there are some similarities to the formula.

To recap, the HUAWEI P20 Pro offered the industry’s biggest sensor in a while, clocking in at 40MP for highly details shots. This was paired up with a 20MP monochrome sensor used to enhance dynamic range and low light detail. Finally, an 8MP 3x telephoto lens offered flexible shooting at a distance. It was a solid package that continues to be one of the best performing smartphone cameras.

HUAWEI P30 cameras: All the new tech explained

Features

HUAWEI ditched the monochrome sensor in last year’s Mate 20 Pro in favor of the extra shooting flexibility offered by a wide-angle camera. This setup remains in place with the P30 Pro. However, the 40MP main sensor has been revamped with a new RYB design that should improve low-light performance. HUAWEI was keen to highlight this particular point during its launch presentation. Based on my hands-on time with the phone, well lit shots look much the same as the P20 Pro (although I’m tempted to give the lead to the older model). We’ll have to see how well the phone performs in low light to draw final conclusions.

In this P20 Pro user’s option, the biggest differentiator in the HUAWEI P30 Pro vs P20 Pro battle comes down to the extras. The P20 Pro was arguably lacking many of the little touches that make Samsung Galaxy handsets worth the premium. Fortunately, HUAWEI has addressed this with the P30 Pro.

The P30 Pro packs in the the extras, but its improved design is the biggest draw.

Personally, I think the P30 Pro pulls ahead in terms of design. Aesthetically, the rear camera design, notch, and curved display look a lot better than the P20 Pro — and that phone is already a looker. Better still, the curved back and front glass means the P30 Pro sits perfectly in the hand. It’s an even nicer phone to hold and use than the P20 Pro, which already handles better than most other over-six-inch handsets.

The P30 Pro doesn’t get everything perfect. The lack of a headphone jack will be a sore thumb for some, EMUI 9.1 still has a few too many settings just like EMUI 9, and the camera interface could certainly be better. Fortunately, both phones are running Android 9 Pie and HUAWEI’s software is perfectly serviceable and nippy to boot.

HUAWEI P30 Pro vs P20 Pro: Which should I buy?

The HUAWEI P30 Pro price tag starts at 999 euros ($1,130) and can cost up to 1,249 euros ($1,410) for the 512GB model. The 128GB P20 Pro launched at 100 euros cheaper, just 899 euros. The P30 Pro is offering more for your money, but it’s on the expensive side. Especially now that you can grab a P20 Pro for around 500 euros, which is even cheaper than the regular HUAWEI P30 too.

If you want all the latest tech that HUAWEI has to offer, there’s no arguing with the value proposition of the new HUAWEI P30 Pro. Between an excellent camera, high-end performance, and an improved design, buyers won’t be left disappointed. However, the P20 Pro still offers value for those looking for an excellent camera experience in a hardware and software package that still feels up-to-date. Those who already own a P20 Pro probably won’t be feeling the urge to upgrade already.

What do you think about the HUAWEI P30 Pro vs P20 Pro? Has HUAWEI made enough improvements to tempt you with its latest flagship?

Fugoo Bluetooth Speaker Differentiates With 40Hr Battery, Incredible Waterproofing And Robust Ecosystem

Note, I originally was going to review this in early 2023, but Amazon is having a pretty insane 1-day deal on it and I love it sooo…

Fugoo is the best Bluetooth speaker you’ve probably never heard of. I got mine after a few readers (and PR folk) rightfully noted its omission from our Best Bluetooth Speaker of 2014 list. I have been listening to it ever since and yep, it should be among the top and for $135, it is a no-brainer…

Fugoo is a relatively new company comprised of industry veterans that makes only one thing: a waterproof 40-hour battery Bluetooth speaker. The actual speaker size is comparable to a slightly trapezoid-ish original Jambox which gives it a stable base. But where the Jambox has three drivers, the Fugoo has two tweeters, two mid/woofers, and two bass drivers – six drivers in all and on both sides.

There are currently three different sleeve options that give it either a “Sport, Style, or Rugged” jacket. Mine came with the heavy Rugged (6-foot drop tested) sleeve that I unbolted (eight hex nuts) and replaced first with the Sport and then the Style sleeve. I’m just not dangerous enough to warrant these bulky covers and it seems plenty strong and waterproof on its own.

Here’s the skinny:

Sound:

The Fugoo recently recieved an update to make it top out at a louder volume without distorting the output. The results are very good. It still isn’t as loud as the larger UE Boom, Bose Soundlink Mini or my personal fav, the JBL Charge 2, but it fills a small room and more importantly, it sounds great. Sound volume is on par with the Beats Pill or Jawbone Jambox, but as you can see in the marketing table below, the Fugoo has way more and omnidirectional drivers than the competitors which give it it great “center of the room” functionality.

The mic for speakerphone calls is also first class and callers on the other end didn’t complain of echoes like they often do with lesser quality speakers.

Waterproof like crazy

Some speakers like the UE Boom are water resistant meaning you can listen to them in the rain or they can take some splashes from your shower. The Fugoo can actually be submerged and still play music underwater up to a meter. It somehow does this without those annoying port coverings over the MicroUSB charging and AUX input ports. It is also snow, sand, dust and waterproof to 3 feet for 30 minutes. Basically you don’t have to worry about this thing in any conditions.

Battery forever

The other standout feature on the Fugoo speaker is its crazy battery life. They claim 40 hours on half volume and to be frank, that’s a bit of a stretch. I was able to get over 24 hours on what I’d consider a normal room sound (slightly over 2/3rds volume) and that’s still incredible. That’s at least double and more of its competition and it easily outlasted the iPhone 6 it was playing from. You very comfortably could take this on a long weekend trip and pass on bringing the charger. It is too bad you can’t actually charge your iPhone from its battery like the JBL Charge/2.

Ecosystem

Fugoo doesn’t just have three different jackets but it also has mounting brackets allowing you to pop this thing on your bike, watercraft, or even your person (though it is a bit heavy). Even better – there is a remote which is also mountable to your person and also waterproof.

Wrap up

The Fugoo speaker deserves to be at the top of any Best Bluetooth speaker list. No one has the type of battery life this thing does nor is anyone else as shock and water/dust proof and still sounding really good. That it comes in a small drop-proof package is a huge bonus. Set it and forget it.

That said, I’m not ready to take the JBL Charge 2 off its perch as my go-to Bluetooth Speaker of the Year however because it gets significantly louder than the Fugoo and can act as a charger for the iPhone while still getting 12+ hours of battery life. Sound is still the number one priority to me and the Fugoo, even with its six drivers, doesn’t get as loud as JBL’s Charge 2 (or Bose Soundlink Mini or UE Boom).

But if you want an indestructible speaker that last more than 24 hours on a battery and still sounds amazing? Grab a Fugoo for $135 today at Amazon or $200 at Fugoo.

12 Best 2.1 Speaker Systems You Should Check Out

There are times when the inbuilt speakers of our computers and TV do not cut it. When you are watching movies with surround sound or listening to music in high-definition, you might realize that the internal speakers usually cannot be compared to a dedicated speaker system, especially due to the lack of enough bass and power output. If you want to experience punching bass out of your speakers, then investing in a good 2.1 speaker system is the least you can do. The 2.1 speaker system includes a pair of satellite speakers and a sub-woofer for producing good bass, and hence the name, 2.1. These speakers are usually great when it comes to all-around performance, like playing music, movies, and even games. So, if you’re keen on purchasing a new 2.1 speaker system for your computer or television, here are the 12 best 2.1 speakers you can buy in 2023.

Best 2.1 Speaker Systems You Can Buy in 2023

In this article, we have listed the best 2.1 Speaker Systems that you can buy at various price points. No matter what your budget is, you can find a speaker in this list.

1. Logitech Z333 2.1 Speaker System

Logitech has been making speakers for a long time now, and it has become one of the market leaders in sound system. So if you want a proper 2.1 speaker system with sheer audio quality, you simply can’t go wrong with Logitech Z333. As you can see, the system has two tweeters and a sub-woofer to amp up the rumbling bass. It’s fairly simple to get this system running, and there’s also a convenient control pod with a headphone jack for easy volume and listening control.

Buy from Amazon (Starts $59.99)

2. Sony HT-S350 Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer

At first blush, the Sony HT-S350 may not look like something that belongs to this list. However, the soundbar has two built-in tweeters and a wireless subwoofer, just like any other 2.1 speaker system. This one-piece design makes it look clean and subtle, and can be easily tucked under your TV. Apart from that, the Sony HT-S350 can deliver total sound up to 320W which is crazy good. The 6.3-inch wireless subwoofer offers richer and deep bass to make the overall audio experience incredible.

The best thing about the Sony speaker is that it can easily be connected to compatible Sony wireless speakers with which you can enjoy even more immersive experience. The wireless nature of the connection allows you to set up wireless speakers in other rooms to experience multi-room listening. Other noteworthy features of the Sony HT-S350 include HDMI Audio Return Channel, multiple sound modes, and Bluetooth streaming with which you can cast your favorite music, shows, and more.

3.

Logitech Z623

We have mentioned a Logitech speaker at the very beginning for users who want a good 2.1 surround sound system at an affordable price. On the other hand, the Logitech Z623 is also relatively affordable when you compare its pricing with the likes of Sony and Bose, but it brings stellar sound quality — almost comparable to the premium ones. It has two satellite speakers and both of them can deliver sound output up to 35 Watt which is amazing. Further, the Logitech Z623 comes with a powerful subwoofer that can fill even large entertainment rooms with its incredible bass. Collectively, the whole set up can deliver sound up to 400 Watt and that is just bonkers. What’s more, the speakers are THX-certified which means the sound output will precisely be the same as the audio engineer intended while recording the track.

Apart from that, the Logitech Z623 comes with an RCA connector and 3.5mm jack which makes it easy for you to plug your audio device whichever way you want. You can connect your computer, smartphone, gaming console, TV, etc. and get immersive sound quality without any setup hassle. All in all, I would say, if you want impressive sound quality without barging into Sony or Bose’s territory then Logitech Z623 is the best 2.1 speaker system you can buy right now.

4. Bose Acoustimass 5

Series V Stereo Speaker System

Only a handful can match the level of sophistication that Bose brings to the table, in the audio department. The company’s Acoustimass 5 Series V 2.1 speaker system is no exception in this regard, as it features a minimalistic, yet elegant design that makes it stand out from the rest of the competition. The satellites in this speaker system have a sleek profile with precisely angled drivers to fill the room with spacious performance without any sweet spots.

The sub-woofer used here is called the Acoustimass module, that’s capable of reproducing low-note performance with deep, clear precision, no matter what the volume is. Lastly, the Bose Acoustimass 5 Series V is aimed towards home theater setups and its recommended power varies from 10 to 200 W, with receivers rated from 4 to 8 ohms.

5. JBL Bar 2.1

6. Edifier USA M3600D Multimedia 2.1 Active Speaker System

Edifier is a popular name when it comes to speakers, music systems, personal, and home entertainment systems. So, it’s hard to compile a list without adding Edifier’s products, more so when the speakers are THX-certified. THX-certified means these speakers have gone through 200 rigorous THX tests to ensure accurate tonal balance with minimal distortion and noise. The subwoofer packs an 8-inch bass driver, and it is capable of producing 130 watts of power.

Buy Edifier USA M3600D Multimedia 2.1 Active Speaker System from Amazon ($150)

7. Creative Pebble Plus 2.1

If you are looking for a 2.1 speaker system on a budget then Creative Pebble Plus 2.1 is the apt choice for you. Creative is quite popular for making affordable yet impressive speakers, and the company’s Pebble Plus 2.1 is just one of them. For under 40 bucks, you’re getting a 2.1 multimedia speaker system that offers RMS power of 8 Watts and peak power of up to 18 Watts, which is certainly good enough for most of the budget-minded consumers.

The Pebble Plus downward-firing sub-woofer is custom-tuned for offering a rich base without much distortion at higher volumes. Further, the frequency distribution of the whole system is ensured, thanks to Creative’s Dual Slot Enclosure. Well, if you think the other speakers featured in this list are too expensive for your budget, this is definitely worth checking out.

8. Bose Companion 5 Multimedia Speaker System

While the Acoustimass 5 Series V speakers were aimed towards home theater setups, the Companion 5 is primarily intended for computers. Just like most of the Bose products, pricing is on the expensive side, and it pretty much costs the same as the Acoustimass V speakers. The overall package is compact and the satellite arrays come fully assembled on stands for superb performance and more usable desktop space.

The Companion 5 comes with a handy control pod, which lets you adjust or mute the volume and houses the headphone jack and an extra port for a second audio source. What’s unique about this speaker system is the fact that it houses a compression circuitry in order to keep your music clear and distorted at even maximum volume. Whether you’re playing games, movies, or music on your computer, the Companion 5 can offer a surreal audio experience.

Buy Bose Companion 5 Multimedia Speaker System from Amazon: ($550)

9. Cyber Acoustics 2.1 Computer Speaker with Subwoofer

This speaker system comes with a desktop control pod that gives you full control over the speakers, as it includes an on/off switch, volume control, bass control, LED power indicator, headphone jack and auxiliary input to connect your phone, tablet or gaming console. The peak power is rated at 62 Watts, whereas the RMS power is rated at 30 Watts, which is seriously good for a speaker system costing under 40 bucks.

Buy from Amazon ($39.95)

10. Altec Lansing VS4621 Octane 7

Altec Lancing is a manufacturer that’s been making waves in the audio equipment industry for years now. The company has some of the best speakers and headphones and is quite popular among audiophiles. Not only do the Altec Lancing speakers sound good, but they also look attractive. And the VS4621 Octane 7, which we have here, is no exception. The tweeters have specially engineered micro drivers that reproduce crystal-clear highs.

With the VS4621, you’ll also get exceptional sound dispersion thanks to the down-firing midrange drivers. The 6.5″ woofers, on the other hand, will deliver thunderous bass and formidable lows. Other noteworthy features of the speaker include built-in volume controls, an auxiliary input jack, and more.

Buy Altec Lansing VS4621 Octane 7 from Amazon ($129)

11. Harman Kardon Soundsticks III

If you’re more concerned about stellar looks rather than actual performance, you’re bound to fall in love with the Harman Kardon Soundstricks III. This 2.1 speaker system features a completely futuristic design, as it’s made of transparent plastic, that lets you see through the internal components of the speakers. The sound quality is quite good, but for its price point, we expect much more, especially because it’s coming from Harman Kardon.

Buy from Amazon ($199.94)

12.

Goldwood Bluetooth 2.1 Speaker System

Goldwood may not be a popular name in the audio segment, but of late, it has been producing some good sound systems at an affordable price. If you are looking for a wireless speaker system that comes with two speakers and a subwoofer — basically a 2.1 sound system — then Goldwood Bluetooth would be a decent choice. The company claims that the total sound output can peak up to 350W which is awesome, but you might experience distortion and noise at the peak volume. Apart from that, the Goldwood speaker system offers SD card reader, both RCA input and output, Aux, USB ports, and more. What I love about this speaker is that it has got hardware knobs for controlling bass, sound, and treble just like the old sound systems. So to conclude, if you want a wireless 2.1 speaker system for cheap then you can definitely check out Goldwood.

The Ultimate Guide To Seznam Seo

Seznam.cz is the second largest search engine in the Czech Republic (also known as Czechia).

Speaking with Dušan Janovský of Seznam, the search engine holds around a 25 percent market share, with Google dominating the market.

“Optimization should focus primarily on the user and on the benefit of the content.”

Your approach to optimizing for Seznam should be the same as for Google, putting the user first.

So some modern web techniques such as JavaScript need to be considered and potentially re-engineered when creating an alternate localized version of your website for the Czech Republic.

A Brief History of Seznam

Founded in 1996 by Ivo Lukačovič, Seznam started life as a catalog of some of the best Czech webpages to visit with a basic keyword search function.

By 2010, it was estimated that the entire Internet population of the Czech Republic was visiting the search engine at least once a month.

Eventually, Google gained more dominance within the market at the expense of Seznam.

Seznam has diversified its online offering with a number of other products including:

Novinky.cz (An online news portal)

Lidé.cz (A community dating website)

Sreality.cz (An online real estate portal)

Mixer.cz (A music video site)

Mapy.cz (Maps search engine)

Volnámísta.cz (An online jobs portal)

Firmy.cz (A business directory)

Most recently they have also entered the internet TV market with Zprávy.

Seznam SEO Basics

Like all search engines, Seznam weights certain variables more than others.

This means that despite its now reduced market share, it is still a sizable player in the Czech market and shouldn’t be discounted.

.cz Domains (Myth)

It’s a common misconception that, like with Yandex and Baidu, Seznam has shown a preference to the native ccTLD of the Czech Republic, .cz.

The reasons are similar as to why Seznam shows a preference, too.

The .cz ccTLD show’s strong local relevancy to the Czech market.

When searching in chúng tôi for [seo], the top 3 results I get are:

And if I repeat the same search in Seznam, I get:

This, however, has been confirmed as being a myth, and any data suggesting otherwise is correlative.

JavaScript

Seznam does support some JavaScript elements, however it is not wholly supported.

So it’s important that your Czech alternate version uses a lot of plain HTML for navigational and internal links.

Otherwise, the SeznamBot may have difficulties discovering all URLs on your website and crawling them frequently.

URL Structures & Illegal Characters

While Czech uses Latin characters, it is a Slavic language and uses a number of special characters not found in other Latin alphabets, such as č, š, and ž.

In a URL, č, š and ž need to be included without any accents, so they would become c, s, and z.

Header Tags

H1 tags still hold weight within Seznam rankings.

It’s important that they’re not used for styling purposes and the correct hierarchy of H1 to H6 is used appropriately.

Title Tags & Meta Descriptions

According to Seznam:

“The title is one of the most important tags in the entire page – the search engines put a lot of emphasis on it. Together with the text of the page, they are the basis from which the search engine creates a caption and a search result label.”

Seznam guidelines also place importance on these being unique to each page, not overly verbose, and not to be stuffed with keywords.

Seznam also overrides the specified page title within search results should it feel more appropriate on-page content can be used to better match user intent.

International SEO

Targeting Czechia with Czech, you would use the code:

Canonical URLs

chúng tôi

chúng tôi

chúng tôi

chúng tôi

That being said, Seznam’s guidelines warn that:

“If the robot does not appear to have pages with similar content, the canonical URL is not accepted.”

It is deemed unsuitable use if Page A and Page B aren’t similar in terms of content.

The only time I’ve really seen this is when someone has tried to use the canonical to sculpt PageRank from blog/supporting content pages to primary commercial content pages/user conversion pages.

Frames

Seznam’s guidelines clearly state:

SERP Personalization

Seznam doesn’t personalize search results pages in the same way that Google does and doesn’t take into account previous search history.

That being said, if a user is searching on chúng tôi (infer Google Maps) or chúng tôi (infer a website/business directory), Seznam can detect your location, if enabled, and shows relevant results based on your proximity.

Mapy.cz and chúng tôi snippets also appear within organic search results pages.

How Does Seznam Weight Backlinks?

Studies have shown that citation flow (number of links) outweighs the trust flow (quality of links).

That being said, you can’t simply spam your way to the top.

While quantity and quality are weighted differently, quality shouldn’t be substituted for volume.

Identifying Seznam Crawl Activity

Seznam has two user-agents, one for crawling pages and one for taking screenshots of pages. The primary user agent crawls from the IPV4 range 77.75.74 to 77.75.79 (excluding 77.75.75), and 2a02:598:a::78:x, 2a02:598:a::79:x and 2a02:598:2::x on IPV6.

In your log files, you can identify the primary SeznamBot user agent as:

Whereas the Seznam screenshot user agent can be identified as:

Car Tech: The Ultimate Backseat Driver

Driving may be the most hazardous thing we do every day. Combine the activity’s inherent dangerousness with error-prone human drivers who are increasingly distracted by things like smartphones, and it’s no surprise that the crash statistics keep going up.

But with all this new tech looking over our shoulder, is driving still fun? Is it the free-wheeling, self-determined, all-American high-speed kick that it used to be?

Between the White Lines

Normally, the person driving the car is responsible for keeping it between the white lines on the roadway. But today’s passive and active lane-assist technology can do that job for chúng tôi passive systems feature a camera to monitor the road’s lines, a computer to analyze the images, and a combination of audio information, visual data, and steering wheel vibrations to warn the driver when the vehicle starts drifting. Active lane-assist systems take it to the next level, using automatic braking to slow you down or steering torque to point you in the right direction. Some vehicles use just one type of system; high-end models may use both passive and active systems.

Digital Nagging for Drowsy Driving

Though common sense tells you not to drive when you’re tired, plenty of groggy drivers venture out onto America’s thoroughfares anyway. Mercedes-Benz’s Attention Assist system combats drowsiness and distraction by warning the driver when it detects abnormal steering.

Using a steering sensor and special software, Attention Assist measures 70-plus parameters of driving behavior during the first few minutes of operation, from which it establishes a unique driver profile. It then refers to this profile at speeds between 50 and 112 mph to identify a drowsy driver’s erratic steering correction. When the driver starts to exhibit certain behaviors associated with drowsiness, an audible warning sounds, and a visual warning illuminates.

Keep Those Thumbs on the Wheel

Driving While Texting (DWT?) has caused thousands of deaths on America’s highways. But a wave of new technologies may help us stop the carnage.

The 2010-up Ford Sync’s Audible Text Messaging feature offers hands-free text reading and replying. The driver’s phone syncs via Bluetooth, and alerts the driver when new texts arrive. Sync will read texts out loud through the vehicle’s speakers, and the driver can send preset or customized responses without taking a finger off of the steering wheel. At this writing, however, Audible Text Messaging is compatible with only a handful of phones, so you might be better off downloading a freestanding voice recognition app from the App Store or from Google Play.

Put the Smartphone Down

PhoneGuard uses GPS tracking to monitor your vehicle’s speed. Once you reach 10 mph, PhoneGuard locks your phone’s keyboard and suspends the phone’s text, email, and Web functions. The app responds to incoming texts via Text Block with Auto Reply. The PhoneGuard Premium upgrade, which starts at $20 a year, adds many other features.

Booze Breath in the Car

An ignition interlock device prevents an alcohol-impaired person from adding to the United States’ annual toll of 10,000-plus drunk-driving fatalities.

Ignition interlock installations such as Smart Start’s SSI-20/20 may be attached to an offender’s car following a DWI conviction and subsequent court order. Such systems connect to the on-board computer system via a wire through the car’s ignition and require the driver to pass a breath-analysis test before the vehicle will operate.

With the ignition turned on, the unit initializes. The test taker then blows into the mouthpiece. Inside the unit, an alcohol-specific fuel cell sensor and a breath sampling system analyze the alcohol level in the subject’s breath. If it falls below a predetermined allowable limit, the display will show ‘PASS’ and the vehicle can be started. If the person’s level is close to the limit, ‘WARN’ will appear but the vehicle will still start. But if ‘FAIL’, ‘VIOLATION’, or ‘ABORT’ appear, the vehicle will remain disabled until the driver passes a follow-up test.
