The leading wireless telco in the United States, Verizon Wireless, this morning released its third quarter results revealing 3.9 million iPhone activations (which is different than the actual unit sales).

It’s the same as its previous quarter and 26 percent up from 3.1 million iPhone activations in Q3 of 2012.

Apple’s share of total smartphone activations at the Big Red carrier, however, has jumped from 43 percent in the second quarter of 2013 to as much as 51 percent of the 7.6 million total smartphone activations in the third quarter.

Due to iPhone supply constraints, there will be some carryover in sales to the fourth quarter, Verizon cautioned. Year-over-year smartphone activations at the carrier were up by 26 percent and revenue improved 4.4 percent to $30.28 billion, CFO Fran Shammo said in an earnings call with investors. According to Verizon, it added a total of 1.1 million net retail connections, including 927,000 net retail postpaid connections. The company now has a total of 101.2 million retail connections (a 5.5 percent annual increase) and 95.2 million retail postpaid connections.

Approximately 42 percent of Verizon’s retail postpaid accounts are now on a Share Everything Plan, which allows customers to share data among multiple devices. Smartphones continued to grow and accounted for more than 67 percent of the Verizon Wireless retail postpaid customer phone base, up from 64 percent at the end of the second quarter.

Third quarter retail postpaid churn was 0.97 percent and service revenues increased 8.4 percent year-over-year, said Verizon. Operating income margin during the quarter was 33.8 percent

Verizon during the September quarter introduced the new Edge service for folks who want to upgrade to a new phone after six months if 50 percent of the retail price has been paid.

It also added a few new hero devices to its stable, including of course the iPhone 5s/5c, the HTC One, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Droid Maxx/Ultra/Mini, which Consumer Reports recommended over Apple’s new iPhones. Also, the September quarter saw the launch of Verizon’s 4G LTE Broadband Router with Voice, which can be used to connect landline phones and wireless data devices simultaneously.

Sticking to its plan, the Big Red telco last month agreed to purchase Vodafone Group PLC’s 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless for $130 billion. The company had to sell $49 billion in bonds to fund this transaction, making it the largest corporate-debt sale in history.

As for Verizon’s fourth-generation Long-Term Evolution (LTE) deployment, the carrier claims its 4G LTE service now covers more than 99 percent of its current 3G network footprint. Verizon’s LTE is currently available to more than 303 million people in more than 500 markets across the United States, representing 97 percent of the nation’s population, the company said.

This includes customers in areas served by Verizon’s LTE in Rural America partners. Overall, Verizon saw 6.8 million 4G LTE device activations on its network in the third quarter, a 21.1 percent increase versus the year-ago quarter.

We’ll have to wait until Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and other U.S. telcos release their third-quarter earnings in order to get a fuller picture of the iPhone’s sales performance.

Apple Reports Q3 2023 Revenue Of $59.7 Billion

Apple’s latest quarterly earnings results show how the company fared selling its products in the middle of an ongoing global pandemic.

Apple on Thursday officially announced its third fiscal quarter results for the year 2023. These results cover the three-month period between May and the end of July. Apple, like every other company, has had to face the realities of the coronavirus pandemic, and this latest report shows how muted things are. Of course, the company still did well, and the Services division continues to be a shining light.

So here’s how it looks: Apple announced $59.7 billion in total revenue for the third fiscal quarter of 2023. That compares to the $53.8 billion the company earned in the third fiscal quarter of 2023. This marks an 11 percent increase year-over-year. And that’s riding on the back of Apple’s second fiscal quarter of this year, when the company brought in $58.3 billion in revenue.

Apple also noted in its press release that international sales accounted for a whopping 60 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Mac: $7.08 billion

Wearables, Home, Accessories: $6.45 billion

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, weighed in on the latest quarterly earnings report:

Apple’s record June quarter was driven by double-digit growth in both Products and Services and growth in each of our geographic segments,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “In uncertain times, this performance is a testament to the important role our products play in our customers’ lives and to Apple’s relentless innovation. This is a challenging moment for our communities, and, from Apple’s new $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative to a new commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030, we’re living the principle that what we make and do should create opportunity and leave the world better than we found it.

And, as usual, Apple’s CFO, Luca Maestri, also chimed in:

Our June quarter performance was strong evidence of Apple’s ability to innovate and execute during challenging times,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “The record business results drove our active installed base of devices to an all-time high in all of our geographic segments and all major product categories. We grew EPS by 18 percent and generated operating cash flow of $16.3 billion during the quarter, a June quarter record for both metrics.

As Apple did last quarter, the company is not specifically providing any future outlook for the next subsequent quarter.

However, the company did announce a four-for-one stock split, which should make the company’s overall stock more accessible to more investors:

The Board of Directors has also approved a four-for-one stock split to make the stock more accessible to a broader base of investors. Each Apple shareholder of record at the close of business on August 24, 2023 will receive three additional shares for every share held on the record date, and trading will begin on a split-adjusted basis on August 31, 2023.

Apple’s next quarterly earnings report will take place in October of this year, and if the rumor mill is true then that quarterly earnings report will only have new iPhones to help for a very short stretch of time.

It came with a gorgeous gradient finish, stellar camera capabilities, and a stunning bezel-less display. It was one of the few flagships opting for a pop-up camera, and we have to say, the result is simply amazing.

The powerful specifications are joined by an amazing and optimized OxygenOS software. Worth noting, that the team behind this software is doing a stellar job with this flagship making OnePlus one of the fastest companies after Google to bring Android 10 updates. The OnePlus 7 Pro received an upgrade in the form of OnePlus 7T Pro, it came with a more capable camera and an upgraded Snapdragon 855+ chipset.

Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts?

Application development is changing from a process of crafting individual lines of code to one of assembling pre-built components, which poses interesting questions about its potential impact on testing. The hope, of course, is that if each component is individually tested, then the final aggregation requires less testing. In fact, one reputable testing expert maintains that eventually no testing at all will be required, so long as the components are each tested individually.

Is this true? I agree that using ready-made components can reduce testing, but I disagree vociferously that they can obsolete it altogether.

Inside Objects

I have the unfortunate distinction of being able to address the testing of third-party components from personal experience. Unfortunate, because my developers and I were tortured for months by a faulty component we had purchased.

Here’s what happened. We bought a grid control and incorporated it into our software, only to have repeated exception errors that crashed the whole application. The vendor insisted the control was widely used without the type of problem we were reporting and the problem had to be elsewhere.

Puzzled, we spent endless hours, then weeks, even months looking for the root cause, all the while experiencing the annoyance and inconvenience of apparently random but repeated crashes. Finally, the developer decided to simply replace the control. But since it would require a significant effort, he decided to research his options carefully by visiting news and discussion groups frequented by developers. Guess what he found out? The problem we were having was, in fact, known and reported by others. Other developers knew of and had reported the same problem we were having.

When confronted, the vendor hastened to explain that all of the object’s methods and properties were thoroughly tested and worked, but the problem arose because of the particular combination in which we were using them.

The point here is that no matter how well an object is tested, it is impossible for its developer to predict all of the possible permutations in which it may be used. Even a fairly simple object with only a dozen methods could support almost half a million different sequences. Now, this does not mean that you should exhaustively test purchased objects individually, but it does mean that you still must test it within the specific implementation.

Between and Around Objects

A related issue is the interaction between objects. Again, I can speak from experience. Disgusted with the vendor of the grid control, we replaced it with another, only to find that we still experienced crashes. Granted, they were less frequent and did not seem to involve the grid, but they occurred nevertheless. By now I was getting grouchy, and the developer was becoming defensive.

There was only one other third party control in the errant application: a tree view. However, we used this tree view in other applications without incident, so it seemed immune from suspicion except that the crashes seemed to occur when focus was moved to the tree. Through yet more research, the developer finally discovered that the problem was related to a shift in focus from one object to the other.

In this case, it was a competition between two objects for system resources, a problem that would never be manifested when either object was tested individually.

As we have already seen, objects exist as part of a larger system, and problems can arise either from the way the system interacts with the object or the way the objects interact with each other. But there is yet another area of risk: the glue that holds the objects together. Objects aren’t like Lego blocks that simply snap together, they are more like bricks that need mortar between them.

This mortar includes both application and system code that interacts with the object. Simple things can creep in, such as incompatibilities between versions of shared system components. I have seen one object refer to a dynamic library that another also needed, but they each expected a different version and neither was compatible nor able to peacefully co-exist.

Where to Draw the Line

Testing is all about assessing risk and setting your priorities accordingly. It is highly unlikely you will have the time or resources to test your application as thoroughly as you will want or need to, so it makes sense to look for ways to reduce your efforts. However, the idea that you don’t need to test components just because they were developed by others is simply not true.

Does this mean you must exercise each and every method and property for each and every component you use? No. What it does mean is that you need to test your particular implementation of it to be sure it does what you need and in the way you expect.

Whether your system was specially handcrafted or cobbled together from off-the-shelf parts, the fact remains that each implementation is unique and the requirements of each application and customer pose new challenges.
