Suggested April 2024 What Is The Best Search Alternative To Google?

Google has dominated the search engine market for most of its 20-year existence. Today, most SEO efforts mainly revolve around the popular search engine.

Google holds a massive 92.74 percent search engine market share worldwide, according to StatCounter, as of October.

While Google is truly a force to be reckoned with, some view its dominance in the internet search space as problematic.

The company, with its large network of Internet-related services and products, owns a vast wealth of information on its users and we don’t exactly know all the ways they are using it.

Privacy concerns are among the top reasons why some people prefer using other search engines instead of Google.

We wanted to know which Google search alternative is favored by marketers, so we asked our Twitter community.

What Is Your Favorite Google Search Alternative?

Here are the results from this #SEJSurveySays poll question.

According to SEJ’s Twitter audience:

36 percent chose DuckDuckGo as their favorite Google search alternative.

32 percent said their top pick is Twitter.

30 percent their favorite alternative search engine is Bing.

2 percent favor Yandex as a Google search alternative.

For me, Bing is as good as Google. I have started using Bing a lot from last 4 months.

However, I am looking forward to install DuckDuckGo (after seeing the poll result). It’s not prominent in India, so it will be interesting to see what results it gives for Indian search terms.

Newor Media Review: Is It The Best Adsense Alternative?

Today I will discuss one of the best Google AdSense alternatives, Newor Media. Newor Media is an example of a high-quality ad network. Their main focus is on:

Maximizing earnings

Keeping the user experience good

Today you learn what makes Newor Media such a great alternative to AdSense. This is a comprehensive review that answers all your questions regarding Newor Media. To make it effective, you will also learn how to start running Newor Ads on your site.

What Is Newor Media?

Newor Media is a Google-approved ad management company. Newor Media uses a strategy called header bidding to auction ad units.

Newor Media is commonly treated as the best alternative to Google AdSense. Newor earnings are typically much higher than with AdSense. Yet your site speed and user experience remain almost the same.

Before I show you how to run Newor Ads on your site, let’s first dig deeper into the details of how Newor Media works.

Header Bidding to Maximize Revenue

Newor Media runs header bidding to auction ad space.

If you are new to the ad game (like I was), this might ring no bells.

A random visitor opens up your web page.

Newor Media sets up a quick competition. In this competition, companies compete against each other trying to get their ad shown to your visitor.

The company that pays the most is the winner. As a reward, their ad is shown to your visitor.

The process is exactly like an auction. A bunch of companies bid against each other to win the auction. In this case, Newor Media is the host, and the auctioned products are ad space on your blog.

But how long does this process take? Shouldn’t the ad be displayed immediately to the visitors?

Newor Media partners with all the major ad networks and companies. Their goal is to make sure your blog’s ad space is auctioned to as many companies as possible. The more bidding companies there are the higher the earnings.

Before Header Bidding Was a Thing…

Back in the day when header bidding wasn’t a thing, your ad space went to the first one who was willing to pay for it. Even if there was an entity willing to pay 10 x more, the first offer still won.

This strategy was much less profitable for the bloggers.

But thanks to the header bidding strategy, bloggers get paid more than they deserve.

Header Bidding Improves User Experience

Header bidding is also a great strategy because it’s lightweight for your website.

This is because all the ad units on your page are powered by a single script. This positively affects the user experience of your site because the load speeds are quick.

This wouldn’t be the case if there were multiple scripts instead of just one.

Starting with Newor Media: A Step-by-Step Guide

To start using Newor, you don’t need to have any experience with Ads. You don’t need to possess any coding experience either. All the heavy lifting is done for you.

To apply as a Newor Media Partner, you need at least 30,000 page views per month to your site. This is the step-by-step process on how to apply and set up Newor Media Ads on your site.

Apply for the Newor Partner Program.

Wait for the application to be accepted/rejected.

Ensure your site is Google AdSense compliant.

Setup a Google Ad Manager account.

Wait for Google to accept your Ad Manager Account (also on Newor’s side)

Create (or update) an chúng tôi file for your site.

Choose ad units with the help of your account manager.

Place the ad units on your site with Ad Inserter.

Wait for the demand to ramp up.

By the way, you can follow this guide no matter which platform you used to build your website. The ad insertion phase works for WordPress blogs only, though.

Before sending the application, you need to make sure your site is eligible to join the program. There are two requirements:

30,000+ monthly page views.

No borderline content (sex, drugs, guns, gambling)

2. Wait for the Approval

After sending your application, you need to wait for a couple of days for the review process to complete.

Don’t be sad if you don’t get accepted right away! Newor Media is a quality ad manager and they want to make sure to choose partners that make a good fit. They won’t choose blogs that wouldn’t make money. If the application was rejected, you can build a bigger audience, or try another ad network, such as Ezoic or AdSense.

But if you got accepted, congrats!

Make sure to disable any ad-blocking services to access your dashboard! Also, from now on it makes sense to disable ad blocks on your own blog too.

3. Ensure Your Site Is Google Compliant

Make sure your website follows the Google ad compliance guidelines.

4. Setup a Google Ad Manager Account and Wait for Approval

When you access Newor Media dashboard for the first time, it prompts you to create a Google Ad Manager account.

To partner with Newor, you need to have a Google Ad Manager set up. When you create an Ad Manager account for your site, it will take a while for Google to approve it.

Google first has to approve your Ad Manager account. Besides, Google also has to review your website on Newor’s end. This can take a couple of days.

It will probably take a week from completing the first step to get here. So be patient!

6. Create an chúng tôi File

Once Google has approved your site and ad account, your Newor account manager help you obtain an chúng tôi file.

You don’t have to worry about anything else, except for adding the chúng tôi file to your site. This means it should be accessible to anyone via chúng tôi .

If you are using WordPress, you can install an chúng tôi Manager plugin.

A WordPress plugin for uploading chúng tôi to your website.

When you have installed and activated the plugin:

Now copy the chúng tôi file you received from Newor Media and paste it to the editor.

Go to chúng tôi . You should see the lines you just copy-pasted appear there.

Good! Now you have successfully set up an chúng tôi file for your site.

7. Choose the Newor Media Ad Units

As the next step, your account manager asks you:

How many ad units do you want?

What are your ad size preferences?

However, if you have a specific number and ad sizing in your mind, feel free to order those.

8. Place the Ad Units on Your Site

There are two things in this file:

Getting these to your site doesn’t require any technical skills. However, if this looks stressful, ask for your account manager to set them up for you.

Setting up the header script is easy.

Sounds non-sense?

Don’t worry, there is a plugin that does it for you. If you are a WordPress user, install a plugin called Insert Headers and Footers by WPBeginner. Then follow these steps:

Install and activate the plugin

Go to your WordPress admin dashboard

This opens up a header and footer editor view.

Now copy and paste the header script to the Scripts in Header section. (Take a look at the screenshot below to figure out which parts to copy)

Save the changes.

The highlighted area shows your header script. Copy-paste this to your Scripts in Header section.

Assuming you are a WordPress user, install a new plugin called Ad Inserter.

Go to your WordPress admin dashboard.

This opens up the ad inserter editor.

In the editor, you can see a bunch of numbered blocks. These blocks are where you should place your ad unit tags. Place each ad unit only once on a separate block.

Now take a look at your ad units and header script file.

The following picture illustrates the separate ad unit tags. In my case, there are 6 separate units that go to 6 different blocks in the Ad Inserter plugin.

For example, let’s place a 300×250 ad before the 2nd paragraph of each blog post.

First, copy one of the ad unit tags into your clipboard.

Choose one of the empty blocks in Ad Inserter.

Paste the ad unit tag to the empty block.

Check the Posts checkbox.

Choose “Before paragraph” from the Insertion dropdown.

Specify the chapter before you want to insert the ad.

Save the settings.

Here is an image illustration of the entire process.

Now you should have your first ad showing up on all your blog posts!

To make sure this is the case, stop all ad-blocking software on your site. Then head over to your site. You should now see an automatic Privacy Disclaimer on your site. Then, choose any blog post, and check before the 2nd paragraph.

To insert the rest of your ad units, place them onto separate blocks in the Ad Inserter tool!

At this point, your Newor Media ad units should be up and running. Now, open any of your blog posts to see all the ad units that appear on the site.

9. Wait for Demand to Ramp Up

Your first-day earnings can go up by 200-300% during the first four weeks.

This is because there is not enough ad demand for your site yet. Thus, your ad space is sold to lower bidders.

Luckily, you don’t have to worry about this. The demand ramps up automatically behind the scenes.

Newor Media: Pros & Cons

The Future Of Paid Search… Isn’t Search. What Google Could Announce Soon

Editors Note: This post uses actual examples to draw conclusions. However, nothing is set in stone when it comes to Google and Bing, so keep that in mind when reading this post.

What is the Buzz in Paid Search These Days?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely noticed a lot of buzz around paid search. People are clamoring about the recent changes Google has rolled out and around Larry Kim’s recent article about rumors of [not provided] for paid search and what is really happening.

But even with all of the firestorm on social media around Google pulling search queries from the referer URLs, there is even more talk and speculation around what might happen on the 22nd of April. In case you missed it, Google has been pushing post after post trying to work everybody up about a new announcement. Larry Kim even hinted today that he knew what was going to be announced on the 22nd –

To the outsider this may look like Chicken Little running around screaming “The sky is falling”, but for paid search professionals this is a big deal. PPC professionals love control! It’s one of the reasons they decide to go into paid search instead of SEO. So losing control is akin to messing with an OCD person’s perfectly organized bookshelf.

There is always a bit of truth in every rumor

Yes it may be funny to think about PPC marketers crying into their pillows at night, but there is always a little bit of truth in every rumor. If you will indulge me for a few minutes I will explain where I think the truth lies, and where the future of paid search is heading.

Google’s first announcement of coming changes happened on March 12th, a full month before the reveal. In that announcement they started with, “It’s an exciting time to be a performance marketer.” They didn’t say search marketer, they didn’t say AdWords marketer they said performance marketer.

If you look at the other announcements including that first one, there is not one mention of keywords! There are numerous mentions of context, devices & content as Google says:

It’s no longer about devices.  Consumers are constantly connected, and the average American today owns four digital devices and spends 60 hours per week consuming content across platforms.* In this multi-device world, the way people use desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets, and smartphones is blurring. This means people don’t think about which device they’re using, they just expect the right content to appear seamlessly wherever they are ready to engage.

Connecting people to content. With more consumer touchpoints than ever, it is becoming increasingly complex to reach people in the moments that matter. At Google we work hard to develop innovations that let technology do the hard work so that businesses can focus on reaching their customers.

Google also mentioned they were looking at ways technology could simplify, (their word was efficiency) marketing for businesses.

What do I think the future of paid search could look like?

I think it could look a lot like [not provided], in the sense that it won’t be so much about keywords, but about people, and the context of what they are doing (and have been doing).

Both Melissa Mackey and I saw an interesting blip in different MCC Accounts

It is also a tool similar in nature to Marin, Acquisio, or Kenshoo.

or

Why Would That be a Big Deal?

What better way to connect consumers, devices, context, and content than a tool that runs on all of them and is owned by Google?

That Being Said…

This is more than just a new platform to manage your AdWords or Display campaigns. Google has been trying to transition marketers into a different mind-set for years. Think about The Zero Moment of Truth which they launched in 2011 a whole two years before they pushed out enhanced campaigns.

The future of paid search is not going to be about keywords. In many ways it won’t even be about the SERP as we know it today. Think of the changes with images dominating the SERP, where they used to be an afterthought.

The first place I search is usually on my mobile, because I have it with me all the time. What about you?

Look to more of the announcements Google has made recently around things like:

Search Network with Display Select Campaigns three posts in a week on the +Google Ads page

Universal Analytics out of beta

It’s customers that matter in Analytics

Not to mention Google just announced +Post Ads are available to everyone

And lest we forget, of course [not provided] for paid search

Put them all together and what do you get?

A future for paid search where it doesn’t look like anything we know today. Of course that is just my drop in the rumor mill bucket.

What do you think the future of paid search is going to be?

Is Pypolars The New Alternative To Pandas?

Objective

Pandas is one of the prominent libraries for a data scientist when it’s about data manipulation and analysis.

Let’s see do we have pypolars as an alternative to pandas or not.

Introduction

Pandas is such a favored library that even non-Python programmers and data science professionals have heard ample about it. And if you’re a seasoned Python programmer, then you’ll be closely familiar with how flexible the Pandas library is.

Pandas is one of the basic libraries every data scientist comes across. It is a super-powerful, fast, and easy to use python library used for data analysis and manipulation. From creating the data frames to reading files of a different format, be it a text file, CSV, JSON, or from slicing and dicing the data to combining multiple data sources, Pandas is a one-stop solution.

What if we get to know that there is a new library in the town, that is challenging the monopoly of pandas in data manipulation. Yes, for me it is exciting to dive into a new library called pypolars.

In this article, we are going to see how pypolars function and how it is compared pandas.

If you want to enter the exciting world of data science, I recommend you check out our Certified AI & ML BlackBelt Accelerate Program.

Table of contents

What is pypolars

how to install

Eager and lazy API

How to use pypolars

comparison with pandas

What is pypolars?

Polars is a fast library implemented in Rust. The memory model of polars is based on Apache Arrow. py-polars is the python binding to the polars, that supports a small subset of the data types and operations supported by polars. The best thing about py-polars is, it is similar to pandas which makes it easier for users to switch on the new library.

Let’s dig deeper into the pypolars and see how it works.

How to install

Installing the pypolars is simple and similar to other python libraries using pip and it’s done.

pip install py-polars Eager and Lazy API

If we talk about the APIs, Polar consists of two APIs. One is Eager and the other is Lazy. Eager API is similar to pandas i.e execution will take place immediately and the result is produced. Like performing some aggregation, joins, or groupings where you have instant results in your hand.

On the other hand, Lazy API is just like Spark. Here the query is first converted into a logical plan, then the plan is optimized and reorganized to reduce the execution time and memory usages. Once the result is requested the polars distributes the tasks on available executes and parallelize the tasks on the fly. Since all the plan is already known and optimized, it didn’t take much time to present the output.

How to use py-polars?

Now we are going to see how py-polars works and let’s go through some examples of implementing the code.

Creating Dataframe

Creating a data frame in py-polars is similar to pandas. using pl.DataFrame.

import pypolars as pl df= pl.DataFrame({'City':['A','B','C','D','E','F','G','H'], 'Temperature':[30.5,32,25,38,40,29.6,21.3,24.9], 'Rain':[103,125,90,75,130,200,155,127] })

First, let’s check the type of data frame created and the columns present.

df.dtypes df.columns

Now I want to access the top rows from the data frame. Just like pandas DataFrame object we have head() function. If no argument is passed it will show the top 5 rows.

df.head(3)

Subsetting a DataFrame

We can also select the subset of a data frame based on the conditions as in pandas.

Concatenate the Dataframes

Many times we need to combine multiple data frames. The polars provide a function to concatenate the data frames. One is hstack for horizontal stacking and the other is vstack for vertical stacking. look at the example given below.

In the following example, I have first created a new data frame with the column Humidity initiated with random values. Later, using hstack I have combined both available data frames horizontally.

import numpy as np df1= pl.DataFrame({'Humidity':np.random.rand(8)}) df1

df.hstack(df1.get_columns())

Now we have a new data frame consisting of data from both data frames. I found this function really interesting.

Further, we will see how can we vertically combine the two data frames. Here we need two data frames with similar columns. Before stacking I am going to create another data frame which is a copy of df using another exciting function known as a clone.

Clone creates the copy of a given series or data frame. It is supercheap to create clones in polar as the underlying memory backed by Polars is immutable. Which further increases the performance of the library.

After creating a copy of the given data frame, I used vstack to concatenate the two data frames.

df2= df.clone() df2.vstack(df)

Read a CSV file

Similar to pandas, polars provide the functions to read files in different formats. Here I am using a CSV file and putting the data in a data frame named ‘data’. ‘data’ is a pypolars data frame as we can see the type of the object.

data = pl.read_csv('california_housing_train.csv') type(data)

Check the few rows in the data frame using the tail function which gives the last rows.

data.tail(4)

Although the polar is similar to pandas and supports most of the functions when it’s about the support of the other libraries like matplotlib, it is still struggling and we need to convert the polars data frame to pandas. Polars provide a simple function to_pandas() that allows users to convert a polar data frame to pandas.

pandas_df=data.to_pandas() type(pandas_df)

Now we will a simple example, how can we convert our data frame into a lazy one for optimizing our performance.

import

pypolars

as

pl

from

pypolars.lazy

import

* lazy_df=df.lazy() lazy_df

As we can see our data frame has been successfully converted into a lazy one but it’s not showing the data. Now I will subset the lazy_df using a filter and then request for the result through collect().

lazy_df.collect()

Why Polars?

It was a small introduction to pypolars, where I tried to help you understand the library and its functionalities. Note that the library works mostly similar to pandas when it comes to the eager API. The user need not give extra effort to learn and it’s easy to use.

Further, Polars has zero cost interaction with NumPy’s ufunc functionality. This means that if it is not supported by Polars, we can use NumPy without any overhead.

Also, Polars is a memory-efficient library, creating a clone or slice is highly economical since underlying memory backed by Polars is immutable.

The lazy API makes the polars more exciting as when it comes to the larger datasets the time and space complexity matters. Due to the optimized and lazy execution polars become an efficient and low-cost option. Here you can see the performance comparison of polars.

If you are looking for more details, I will suggest checking the documentation of the polars.

End Notes

Polars is comparatively new and does not have the support of the other libraries required by a data scientist. But on the other hand, pandas is an established player with a large community base and an efficient ecosystem. At the moment it is difficult to say that it can be an alternative to pandas. But definitely, it is an interesting option.

To summarize, Polars is an interesting option to perform data manipulation and analysis. If you have a dataset that is too large for pandas and too small for spark. Polars is an efficient solution as it utilizes all the available cores in your machine for parallel execution.

Google Confirms Search Console Reporting Is Delayed

Google Search Console is affected by an issue that’s causing delays in updating the Index Coverage report.

This was confirmed by Google on Twitter at 5:11 am EST on September 14.

We’re currently experiencing longer than usual delays in the Search Console Index Coverage report. This only affects reporting, not crawling, indexing, or ranking of websites. We’ll update here once this issue is resolved. Thanks for your patience!

— Google Webmasters (@googlewmc) September 14, 2023

The Index Coverage report in Search Console shows which pages on a site have been indexed, as well as any problems encountered with indexing.

Note that this issue does not affect Google’s ability to crawl, index, or rank web pages.

This particular issue only impacts reporting.

That means recently published pages may be omitted from the Index Coverage report even though they are, in fact, indexed.

Until the problem is fixed, the best way to check if a page is indexed is to use the “site:” operator in Google Search.

For example, if you recently published a page on video conferencing tips, you would search for it like this:

If Google can find it with the ‘site:’ operator then your content is being indexed just fine.

Still, it would certainly be more convenient if the Index Coverage report was working as designed.

When Will This Be Fixed?

It’s difficult to say when this problem will be resolved. Even Google hasn’t been able to provide an accurate estimation.

If you look at your Index Coverage report right now you’ll see it was last updated on August 31.

Google’s John Mueller acknowledged the issue on September 9, saying the report should be caught up “soon.”

It looks like they’re a bit behind, but I heard they should be catching up soon again. Sorry for the delay!

— 🍌 John 🍌 (@JohnMu) September 9, 2023

Here we are 5 days later and still no sign of the issue being fixed.

Unfortunately, a delay like this is not unheard of. Search Console reporting has been delayed several times in the past, with issues lasting from days to weeks.

In all cases, Google tweeted updates as reporting was up to date.

So the only thing site owners can do is remain patient and continue to wait.

This article will be updated when Google confirms a fix has been implemented.

Technorati Vs. Google Blog Search: Which Is Better?

Robert Scoble recently raised an interesting question on his blog: Which blog search is the best of them all? According to Scoble, Technorati seems to trump Google blog search because it includes information that Google Blog search does not, and offers more search results when you punch in a specific term.

Other users in the discussions have suggested that Technorati index is slow and ignores certain blogs even though they are updated regularly. Dave Sifry is doing a commendable job by personally troubleshooting specific URLS that are not indexed in Technorati, so if your blog is not getting indexed properly.. you might want to head over to Scoble’s blog and give Dave some additional work. 🙂

Google’s Matt Cutts soon chimes in with his thoughts on the debate:

Technorati – Multiple Search Filters are Useful

I personally use both search engines because both of them have specific functions not found in each other. For example, Technorati allows you to filer your search results according to link authority. This allows you to find out what the big or popular blogs are saying about a specific topic.

Interestingly enough, I’ve noticed that if you don’t want spam in your search results, simply set the filter to either blogs with some authority or blogs with a lot of authority. This guarantees that your search results do not include splogs. The downside is that you’ll overlook all the blogs with low link counts.

By also offering the ability to sort results according to language means that you’ll be able to easily access the international blogosphere. For example, I usually use this function to find out what bloggers in other countries think about chúng tôi my personal blog which sees 50% of its readers from parts of Asia and Europe. While this filter seems to not have received much attention, I can anticipate its usefulness when you run a weblog or magazine and want to geo-target a specific reader market.

Google Blog Search – Alerts and The Ability to Designate Time

The strongest feature that Google Blog Search offers is the ability to sort material according to specific time frames. For instance, if I wanted to find fresh content from blogs, I would set the published time frame to either the last 12 hours or even the last hour depending on the topic. The combination of Google Alerts and feed subscription also makes keeping track of specific topics a very convenient process.

I’m actually glad Scoble brought up this topic because it is a catalyst for users to offer their feedback on what they would like to see from each blog search engine.

What do you think of Google Blog Search and Technorati? Do you favor either one over the other, and why?
