Why Motion Gaming Should Be Left Out of the PlayStation 4
At the end of February, Sony will be holding a special PlayStation event that, industry experts believe, will be used to show off its next console. Likely dubbed the PlayStation 4, the console is expected to come with an improved online experience, better graphics, and Blu-ray. And since the PlayStation 3 comes with the Move motion-gaming accessory, it’s believed that the console will also integrate a similar function in some chúng tôi I’m here to tell Sony something. I can appreciate that the company wants to jump on the motion bandwagon made popular by the Wii and arguably better by the Kinect, but bundling such a feature into the PlayStation 4 makes absolutely no sense.[Image credit: Tai Chiem]
Sony is to gaming what a Mercedes-Benz is to cars. The company has for years been delivering the most expensive consoles and its customer base has come to expect a certain level of technical achievement not available elsewhere. Whereas Nintendo appeals to the casual gamer looking for simpler experiences, Sony is trying to woo the hardcore segment that won’t be caught tossing around a Wii Remote.
That’s precisely why the Move controller was such a bad idea. Yes, I know that Sony was trying to catch up to its competitors and it thought that the Move would work, but it’s proven to be a bad idea. The Move is largely ignored by gamers and developers, and there isn’t a single person I know that feels the PlayStation 3 would be better with the Move than without it.
So, why should Sony deliver a console that aims at delivering everything but the kitchen sink? Sony can be successful by delivering a good-looking product with high-end specs that customers actually want. And as long as it plays nice with developers – something Nintendo hasn’t historically been so great at – the company should have a respectable level of success in the next generation.
[aquote]Motion gaming is a gimmick. After a few fun plays it becomes old and annoying[/aquote]
Motion gaming is a gimmick. It’s something that, after a few fun plays, becomes old and annoying. It’s also something that really only makes sense for kids or those who like to throw parties and make fun of drunken fools jumping around the living room with a wand in their hands. Motion gaming like what we find in the Wii and PlayStation 3 has done nothing to improve the overall playability of a game. After a few plays, the neat idea a developer has come up with is tossed aside for traditional play.
The time has come for Sony to acknowledge what its brand and its hardware are really all about. The future resides not in all of the features Sony can add to a console, but in the quality of those features. And motion gaming delivers no added quality that the average PlayStation 4 owner will care about.
So, don’t even think about bringing motion gaming to the PlayStation 4, Sony. Believe me – it’s one hugely bad idea.

5 Of The Best Rom Hacks For Classic Games You Should Check Out
Retro gaming has never been more popular. With single board computers like the Raspberry Pi and software like RetroPie and RecalBox making revisiting old favorites affordable and easy, it’s safe to say that old school gaming is entering a renaissance period.
Playing your old games can be a great way to tap into nostalgia. But what happens when you beat all your old favorites again? Is retro gaming destined to be just a novelty? Have no fear, your emulation machine is about to get a new lease on life with ROM hacks of classic games.
What Is a ROM?In the context of video game emulation, the term “ROM” is frequently used to refer to a digital copy of a game.
Video game emulation and ROMs fall in to a legal gray area. Even though many older games have been discontinued and are no longer manufactured, their copyrights often remain. This means that downloading game ROMs that you do not own is illegal. For that reason we will not be linking to any sites that host ROM files.
What Is a ROM Hack?Despite the name, ROM hacking isn’t really “hacking” at all. In fact, it is merely editing. Simply put, ROM hacking is the modification of a game’s code.
Ever since video game emulation took off in the 90s, fans have been tinkering with game code for a variety of reasons. ROM hackers can alter levels, gameplay, graphics, dialogue, music and more. In some cases, dedicated fans can even go so far as to create an entirely original game using the original game’s engine and assets.
Note: ROM hacking, much like video game emulation itself, resides in a legal grey area. As a result, the majority of the ROM hacks available are unauthorized. For that reason we will not be providing direct links to any of the hacks listed below.
In regards to the hacks listed below, this is far from a “definitive” list of the best ROM hacks. The hacks mentioned below are considered to be some of the best and most polished ROM hacks around.
1. Mario AdventureNES games are popular to hack due to their relative simplicity compared to later consoles. Because of this, there are a lot of NES ROM hacks out there. As we all know, quantity doesn’t equate to quality. Mario Adventure, however, is considered to be one of the greatest NES ROM hacks of all time. Mario Adventure is a complete reworking of the best-selling Super Mario Bros. 3 featuring all new levels, enemies and power-ups. In addition, Mario Adventure includes different weather patterns and boss battles on every stage to up the ante.
2. Super Metroid RedesignConsidered one of the best video games of all time, Super Metroid sees players exploring a mysterious alien planet. Players battle strange creatures and acquire new weapons and abilities to help them succeed. The formula was so popular that the Metroid franchise inspired an entire sub-genre of games called “Metroidvania.” Super Metroid Redesign alters the physics of the game, making them more realistic and less “floaty.” The hack also significantly increases the size of the map, giving players more opportunity to explore and discover new items.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Parallel WorldsA hack of the seminal SNES game, “A Link to the Past,” Parallel Worlds is a complete overhaul of the game. Everything from the overworld to the dungeons is brand new. Furthermore, Parallel Worlds features an original storyline that does the classic series justice. Be aware that this hack is not for the faint of heart! Parallel Worlds ratchets up the difficulty significantly which can result in even the most seasoned Zelda fan rage quitting. Fortunately, for those who would like to experience this unique chapter in the Zelda mythology, there is an easier version available called “Parallel Worlds Remodel.”
4. Ultimate Mortal Kombat TrilogyIt may be hard to believe, but back in the 90s the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games were incredibly controversial. The series features digitized sprites doling out punishment as buckets of pixelated blood splashed across the screen. This “graphic” depiction of violence was partly responsible for the creation of the ESRB ratings system. Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy combines all playable characters from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive versions of Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3 into a single game. Furthermore, the hack features new backgrounds, combos and finishing moves.
5. Mario Kart RThe original Mario Kart for the SNES has spawned a slew of sequels and imitators. Mario Kart R is a hack of the granddaddy of kart racers bringing back the simplicity of the 16-bit era. This time around, however, there are brand new tracks and a remixed soundtrack to keep things fresh. In addition, this hack features an entirely new playable character: everyone’s favourite pink marshmallow glutton, Kirby.

How To Set The Width Of The Left Border With Javascript?
In this tutorial, we will learn how to set the width of the left border with JavaScript.
The border property specifies the boundary of an element. It specifies the border style, border-color values, and also border-width. One, two, or three of the values can be used to specify the border attribute. The sequence of the values is irrelevant. The border shorthand comes in handy when you want all four borders to be the same.
To differentiate them, employ the longhand border-color, and other attributes like border style and width, which take distinct values for each side. Alternatively, you may use logical attributes like border-block-start and physical attributes like border-top to target just one border at a time.
The DOM Style borderLeftWidth property is used to set or return the width of an element’s left border. It returns a string indicating the width of an element’s left border. The border-style property is always declared before the border-left-width property. Before you can adjust the width of an element, it must have boundaries.
Following are the ways to set the width of the left border with JavaScript.
Using the borderLeftWidth PropertyThe DOM Style borderLeftWidth property is used to set or return the width of an element’s left border. It returns a string indicating the width of an element’s left border. A thin left border is specified using the thin border attribute.
Syntax document.getElementById("box").style.borderLeftWidth = "thin"; document.getElementById("box").style.borderLeftWidth = "20px"; document.getElementById("box").style.borderLeftWidth = "thick";The box element is fetched using the getElementById() method, and the width of the left border is changed to thin property.

Using the setProperty attributeA property on a style declaration object is given a new value through the setProperty() function interface. The declaration block’s new CSS may be set, or the old CSS can be modified using the setProperty() function. It accepts the property name, value, and priority as three inputs.
A string representing the property’s name to set may be a necessary input in the property name argument. The value is a parameter that can be optionally specified and comprises a string that denotes the updated value. A string that indicates whether or whether the priority of the property should be set to important is contained in the priority argument, which is an optional input.
Syntax function myFunction() { var x = document.getElementById("box").style; x.setProperty("border-left-width", "30px"); }The box element is fetched through the getElementById() method. The setProperty() attribute is used to set the width of the left border to 30 px.

Pixel 4 Confirmed With Soli For Face Unlock & Motion Sense
Pixel 4 confirmed with Soli for face unlock & Motion Sense
The Pixel 4 may still be months away from launching, but Google can’t stop previewing its Android flagship’s features – and confirming new and innovative hardware along the way. Recent rumors have focused on the possibility of Google including its motion-sensing Soli technology in the Pixel 4, and – just as it did with camera chatter – Google has now confirmed that will indeed be onboard, powering the phone’s Motion Sense feature.
Soli is the handiwork of the Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) team at Google, the group focused on cooking up new gadgetry and innovative designs that could one day make its way into production devices. In the case of Soli specifically, it builds on radar, packaging it into a form-factor small enough to fit into a phone or even a wearable.
For the Pixel 4, Soli will be responsible for Motion Sense. The sensor will be integrated into the upper bezel of the smartphone, tracking motions around the handset. It’ll mean you can skip songs by waving a hand, snooze alarms, and silence incoming calls. “These capabilities are just the start,” Google’s Brandon Barbello, product manager for Pixel, says, “and just as Pixels get better over time, Motion Sense will evolve as well. “
It’s not the only Pixel 4 feature that Google is confirming today. There’ll also be face unlock, something Google concedes is familiar from other smartphones on the market already, but which Barbello says the Pixel 4 will do differently.
“Other phones require you to lift the device all the way up, pose in a certain way, wait for it to unlock, and then swipe to get to the homescreen,” the product manager points out. “Pixel 4 does all of that in a much more streamlined way.”
So, Soli will be used to track when you’re reaching for the Pixel 4. That will then proactively turn on the face unlock sensors that are also integrated into the top bezel. It’ll cut down the wake time for the system, versus relying on the accelerometer to know when the phone is physically moving.
The promise is that the Pixel 4 face unlock will open as you pick the phone up, with no pause to wait for it to take place. It’ll also work regardless of the angle you’re holding the Pixel 4 at. Even if you’re holding it upside down, in fact.
Google will also allow Android to use face unlock for secure payments and app authentication. The facial recognition technology stores its data on the handset alone, rather than in the cloud, using the Titan M security chip. Soli data is also processed on-device, rather than being saved to the cloud or, indeed, shared with other Google services.
Gesture tracking on phones isn’t new: indeed, we saw LG try something along those lines earlier in the year, with the G8 ThinQ. The shortcoming typically is that the precision of the sensors – usually camera-based, or with a so-called Time of Flight (ToF) sensor – is underwhelming, forcing you to make over-exaggerated movements. We’ll see whether Soli bypasses that problem later in the year, with the Pixel 4 expected to debut in October 2023.
Why Best Practices Might Be Hurting You
Anyone can learn how to write or paint or play music, but the virtuosos who have historically merited our most thorough exegesis have been those who were willing to stretch the boundaries of text, of music, of art, in new directions – Youngme Moon
If you’ve been on the web for more than a few weeks and you do a search for ” How to get more traffic to your blog” you’ll be inundated with a list of “best practices.” It wouldn’t be surprising if it’s 20 different people saying the exact same thing in a slightly different way.
But the problem with best practices is that everybody is following them. So on some level best practices are a virtual guarantee that you won’t stand out amongst the noise. Once you take care of the pillars of a successful blog, it’s time for you to innovate, to experiment and ditch your map for a compass.
Avoiding the The Echo ChamberAvoiding the echo chamber of the web is easier said than done. It takes time, patience and the willingness to do the unglamorous things that you don’t hear about in people’s stories. Get into the habit of writing 1000 words a day. It doesn’t matter if the words are good. Early in your journey you need to just develop the writing muscle. It has to go from an item on your to do list to a habit. That’s how you’ll eventually develop a voice that people recognize from a mile away.
You have to be different not just better – Josh Kaufman Arrive Somewhere new, by going somewhere newI’ve violated every rule of Facebook status updates. Mine are far from short. I’ve written 1000 word essays and shared them. People actually read them every single day. And many of those people were the driving force behind the success my most recent book. A Facebook marketing expert would never recommend this as a best practice. By exploring uncharted territory, you’ve got a possibility of arriving at a new destination. Take a look at a best practice and flip it on its head. The only rule I would say to follow is this. If you wouldn’t say it to somebody’s face, you shouldn’t say it to them online.
Borrowing from other art formsI recently had a chance to speak with Erik Wahl, a graffiti artist who wrote a best selling business book called Unthink. One of the things he emphasized was the importance of exposing yourself to multiple art forms.
If you’re into rock music, go to a symphony performance
If you read business books, crack open a comic book
Just expose yourself to something that could result in a breakthrough. Recently I started teaching myself how to draw. I’m no Picasso, but the simple process of doodling sparked a whole bunch of new ideas for revenue generating projects.
Playing with a box of CrayonsI see social media and all the tools at our disposal like a box of crayons. But where people go wrong is they try to create with every color. The result of course is something that even a kindergartner wouldn’t hang on a refrigerator. It’s a jumbled of mess of incomplete ideas, false starts, and no real contribution to your customers or the world around you. Take 4-5 colors, limit the number of tools, and challenge yourself to create a masterpiece within the boundaries of those constraints.
Explore Small, Seemingly Crazy Ideas, and Ignore the Competition for a While“When we spend too much time comparing our own brand performance to that of our competitors, it is easy to end up on a competitive treadmill” – Youngme Moon
Who in their right mind would find a limit of 140 characters a great way to communicate? It seems like a crazy idea when you boil it down to that. Yet millions of us use twitter everyday. We often resist our small ideas. But most big ideas are the byproduct of 100’s of small ideas. Create a 20% time rule for your life. Spend 20% of your time on projects just because they’re interesting instead of doing them because they might change the bottom line.
I’ve spent a significant amount of my time on the web looking sideways, watching my competitors, imitating, mimicking and adopting best practices. A few months ago I decided to explore uncharted territory, dangerous waters, and places where best practices go to die. This is where your true ability to stand out in a noisy world lies.
Approach your life, your work, and business like a mad scientist. Try to blow something up and set your hair on fire. It’s not a best practice and that’s kind of the point
Psychosis Is The Last Marijuana Side Effect You Should Be Worried About
Reefer madness—the idea that marijuana drives most of its users to commit crimes and descend into sin—is an ableist morality fable. But for a specific population of marijuana users, there is a link between pot use and mental health. A study published yesterday in The Lancet Psychiatry underlines that link as well as providing some new detail on who is at risk. But overemphasizing the connection poses its own problems.
“Our study shows that daily cannabis use, especially of high potency cannabis, is strongly linked to the risk of developing psychosis,” lead author Marta Di Forti of King’s College London wrote in an email sent to Popular Science.
The researchers define this as the risk of developing a psychotic disorder (it’s a technical term) such as schizophrenia and having symptoms such as hearing voices and experiencing delusions or paranoia.
They studied 901 patients who experienced their first episode of psychosis and a further 1237 patients who had never had such an episode. The subjects came from 11 different sites across Europe and Brazil. They found that daily cannabis use and the use of highly potent strains were both correlated with a higher rate of psychosis.
It’s long been known that there can be a causal link between marijuana use and the onset of such symptoms. This new study “focuses on identifying the pattern of use that carries the highest risk and how this affects rates of psychotic disorder,” Di Forti writes.
“Given the increasing availability of high-potency cannabis, this has important implications for public health,” the King’s College researchers wrote in the paper.
At the population scale–that is, the scale that most public health officials think about–the risk of psychosis as a result of marijuana consumption is just one in 20,000, Hamilton says. There are many more worrying behaviors related to recreational marijuana use, particularly among young people, he says.
“I think if money was no issue, if there were plenty of research money, I’d welcome studies like this,” Hamilton says. But “… money for research, particularly on drug use and mental health, is quite hard to come by.”
In the UK, where he works, a much more widespread marijuana-related public health concern is the number of young people who mix tobacco and marijuana in their joints and become addicted to nicotine as a result. Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of death in the United Kingdom, causing nearly one in five preventable deaths, according to Cancer Research UK.
Rather than trying to add more levels of detail into the picture of how cannabis use is linked to psychosis, he says, “I think what would be far more interesting [and] far more useful is to try and work out who has a problem before they’re exposed to cannabis.” That way, people at high risk of developing psychosis could be identified and reached by targeted public health interventions
Hamilton is concerned that general public health messaging about psychosis being a risk of marijuana smoking misses the mark. “I think we have to be careful that we don’t exaggerate the risk,” he says.
While recreational marijuana use isn’t the cause of “reefer madness,” there are other reasons to keep an eye on your marijuana consumption. For one thing, smoking it is linked to a variety of ailments (smoke is just bad for your lungs, in general). Compared to factors like these, a 1:20,000 risk of developing symptoms of psychosis is pretty negligible, and it’s unlikely to stop many people from consuming marijuana, says Hamilton.
“Although psychosis is devastating, and you wouldn’t wish it on anyone, the risk of developing psychosis is very very small compared to the number of people who are exposed to [marijuana],” Hamilton says.
Non-targeted public health warnings about it can make authorities (the Surgeon General, for instance, who has never issued a public health warning about marijuana smoking) seem less credible, especially to young recreational users of marijuana, he says. If they hear about the risk of psychosis, but then nobody they know is one of the 1 in 20,000 marijuana users who develop it, they may stop listening to other public health messaging about the potential harms of marijuana smoking.
