Suggested January 2024 Windows 10 Build 18277 (19H1) Releases With New Features

Microsoft is now rolling out Windows 10 build 18277 for devices enrolled in the Fast ring of the Windows Insider Program. This is the 12th preview that the company is making available as part of the 19H1 development, and it delivers several new features and improvements.

Windows 10 build 18277, according to the software giant, improves Focus assist, Action Center gets a slider to quickly adjust brightness, you’ll find a new version of emoji, and Windows Defender Application Guard gets new settings.

Here are all the changes in the latest preview for Windows 10 19H1:

Action Center

Starting with build 18277, Action Center add a new slider to quickly adjust the brightness of the screen.

In addition, you can rearrange and add buttons without having to open the Settings app.

Focus assist

In the Focus assist setting page, Windows 10 is adding a new automatic rule to let remove distractions while you’re working on anything full screen. (The option is called “When I’m using an app in full screen mode.”)

Advanced scaling settings

Since the April 2023 Update, Windows 10 includes an option to automatically fix scaling for apps that may look blurry after your display settings change. However, it was an option that you needed to enable manually, but with the April 2023 update, the option is now enabled by default.

The Storage settings page has been redesigned to see at glance how space is been utilized, instead of having to select each drive to see the same information, which wasn’t very intuitive for many users.

Under the More Storage settings section, you’ll now find options to access the Optimize Drives settings to use defragmentation, and you’ll find another option to view storage usage on other drives.

Windows Defender Application Guard

Windows 10 build 18277 includes an updated version of Windows Security, which introduces new Windows Defender Application Guard options that allows you to manage access to your camera and microphone while browsing using this security feature for Microsoft Edge.

This flight is also updating the Japanese IME by redesigning how it works with applications, and the candidate window interface has been updated to be cleaner and more polished.

“You’ll notice that each text prediction candidate now has an index so you can quickly select it, just like the conversion candidates.”

Additional changes

Alongside the features and improvements, Windows 10 build 18277 also includes a few other minor changes, such as updated icon to identify the Region page in Settings.

Windows 10 ships with some adjustments to improve the performance of Windows + Shift + S bringing up snipping.

Finally, this flight also ships with emoji 12, but it’s still a work in progress.

Microsoft is listing the complete set of improvements, fixes, and known issues for Windows 10 Insider Preview build 18277 at the Windows Blog.

Update November 14, 2023: Alongwith build 18277, Microsoft is also releasing update KB4470200 that bumps the version number to build 18277.1006, and it adds an update block for a small number of PCs that use Nuvoton (NTC) TPM chips with a specific firmware version ( due to a bug causing issues with Windows Hello face/biometric/pin login not working. In addition, update KB4470200 fixes a media display bug that was causing unexpected display rendering for some users.

Microsoft begins to roll out Windows 10 build 14316 to the Fast ring of updates for PC. The new preview for Insiders includes many new features and improvements the company is planning to release with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

While the software giant will slowly be introducing the new feature planned for the summer, build 14316 is not a small preview, as it introduces a big number of the upcoming features.

Bash Ubuntu on Windows

Perhaps the biggest addition on this update for testers is Bash Ubuntu on Windows. The new features will allow developers to create and test code that will run on multiple platforms.

Once Bash is installed, you simply open Command Prompt and use Bash command to start the tool.

Microsoft Edge

The software giant is also including a number of new features for the web platform on Microsoft Edge, including for the F12 Developer Tools, Web Platform, and more.

Cortana is getting a lot of new features in this preview, including:

Cortana setup: On select markets, if you’re having issues enabling Cortana, the operating system can now download the necessary speech languages as needed and enable the assistant automatically.

Action Center

While not all the improvements Microsoft showed off during Build 2023 are included on this preview, Action Center is starting to show some improvements.

As previously rumored, Microsoft is now including a dark theme, which is a feature the company is borrowing from Windows 10 Mobile. This also means that users no longer have to hack the registry settings to enable the feature.

Microsoft is also adding a new option on Colors to Show color on title bar only.

The “Battery Saver” settings page got renamed to “Battery”, and Detailed Battery Use page gets updated to manage settings per-app background.

Microsoft is also adding a new setting called Managed by Windows that will enable Windows to automatically manage the battery usage for app enabling to improve battery life.

Windows Update Virtual Desktop

Connect app

The new app will allow to bring Continuum from phones to PC without needing a dock or Miracast adapter. Simply start the app and connect to your Windows 10 Mobile device via wireless connectivity.

Skype Universal Windows Platform app

Recently, Microsoft announced that is working on a new Skype app that unifies messages, video, and calls once again with a modern design. Now Insiders get the first preview with basic functionalities.

Upgrade UI

Microsoft is updating the progress experience when installing new updates or upgrades. The new change ditches the black background with the loading circle, in favor of a design that matches Windows Update.

Along with the new features and changes Microsoft says that the upcoming build will have a new “Messaging everywhere” preview to enable you to send and receive SMS messages from your phone directly from your PC.

If you’re part of the Insider program, you can download the Windows 10 build 14316 on your PC via Windows Update.

Linkedin Pages Updated With New Features

New LinkedIn Pages updates include:

Lead Gen Forms in Product Pages

Ways to share content among coworkers in the ‘My Community’ tab

Full details about each of these new updates can be found below.

Lead Gen Forms For LinkedIn Product Pages

A LinkedIn Product Page is a tool introduced last year which is like a business page for a specific product.

If a business sells a popular product that customers discuss and ask questions about online, a LinkedIn Product Page is a place where they can go to do that.

Now Product Pages can be used to collect customer information through Lead Gen Forms.

After submitting a lead form, users will see a “thank you” page with a link to a destination of the business’s choice.

For example, these forms can be used to collect customer information in exchange for a coupon code, a free download, or something of similar value.

Product Pages have only been available to create on LinkedIn since December and many companies have yet to utilize them. There’s roughly 12,000 product pages currently published by 10,000 companies.

The ability to use lead gen forms for free may be the incentive businesses need to create pages for individual products, on top of having a page for their company.

Updates to “My Company” Tab

The “My Company” tab within LinkedIn Pages is getting updated with a way for admins to keep employees engaged with content.

A new ‘Recommend’ tool allows Page admins to curate organic content and suggest trending articles, which employees can then reshape through a new ‘Content Suggestions’ tool.

LinkedIn notes how employees are more likely to engage with content and share it when it’s from their own company:

“Internal LinkedIn research shows that employees are 60% more likely to engage with posts from coworkers vs. non-coworkers, and 14x more likely to share their organization’s Page content vs. other brands’ content.”

LinkedIn is adding a new analytics section in the My Company tab to help businesses measure the impact this feature has on content engagement and reach.

LinkedIn Stories Update For Pages

LinkedIn makes a point of noting in its blog post that all Pages can use the swipe-up feature in their stories.

The swipe-up feature is not available to all personal accounts, but it is available to all Pages.

That has been the case since LinkedIn added the swipe-up feature last month, so I’m not sure why it’s being mentioned again. Maybe not enough Pages are aware it exists. It could be an effective way to boost referral traffic.

Photoshop Cs4 New Features – Tabbed Document Windows

The images appear nested in a single document, with each image given its own name tab at the top.

Switching Between Images

Each tab contains the exact same information you’d expect to find at the top of a standard document window in Photoshop, including the name of the image, the current zoom level, the color mode, and the current bit depth.

Re-Arranging The Order Of The Images

Drag the tabs left or right to change the order of the images.

Cycle Forward And Backward Through The Images

You can cycle through the images using a couple of handy keyboard shortcuts. Press Ctrl+~ (Win) / Command+~ (Mac) to move forward through the tabs, or Ctrl+Shift+~ (Win) / Command+Shift+~ (Mac) to move backwards. The “~” is the tilde key which you’ll find in the top left corner of the keyboard below the Esc key. In previous versions of Photoshop, you could cycle forward through multiple document windows using Ctrl+Tab (Win) / Control+Tab (Mac) or backwards with Ctrl+Shift+Tab (Win) / Control+Shift+Tab (Mac). These older keyboard shortcuts still work in Photoshop CS4, so its your choice which ones you want to use.

One potential bit of confusion to keep in mind is that Photoshop moves through the images in the order they were opened, not necessarily the order they appear in on screen. If you’ve re-arranged the order of the images in the tabs and then use the keyboard shortcuts to cycle through them, Photoshop may move through them in an order different from what you expected.

The Fly-Out Image Selection Menu

Select images from the fly-out menu if not all name tabs can fit on the screen.

Floating An Image Into A Separate Document Window

Drag an image away from the other tabs to float it in its own document window.

Floating All Images Into Separate Document Windows

If you want to get rid of the tabs completely and have all open images floating in separate document windows, go up to the Window menu, choose Arrange, and then choose Float All in Windows:

Move An Image Back Into The Tabbed Group Group All Floating Document Windows Into Tabs

If you have more than one image floating in a separate document window and you want to quickly group them all back into tabbed documents, go up to the Window menu, choose Arrange, and then choose Consolidate All to Tabs. You can use this option to regroup a single floating document as well:

Close A Single Tabbed Window Close All Tabbed Document Windows

To close all tabbed document windows at once, go up to the File menu in the Menu Bar and choose Close All:

Disabling The Tabbed Document Windows Feature

If you prefer the old way of working in Photoshop with each image floating in its own document window, you can disable the new tabbed document windows feature from inside Photoshop CS4’s Preferences. On a Mac, go up to the Photoshop menu, choose Preferences, and then choose Interface. On a Windows system, go up to the Edit menu, choose Preferences, and then choose Interface. This brings up the Preferences dialog box set to the Interface options. Here, you’ll find a section called Panels & Documents. To disable the tabbed document windows feature, simply uncheck the bottom two options, Open Documents as Tabs and Enable Floating Document Window Docking:

Uncheck the “Open Documents as Tabs” and “Enable Floating Document Window Docking” options disable the tabbed document windows feature.

10 New Local Search Features You Should Be Using

The past year has been a big one for local search.

Google has remained the behemoth in local SEO, being heavily relied upon by businesses within organic results and Google Maps.

In 2023, the Google My Business team have been testing and rolling out more new local search features than ever before.

I’ve been documenting many of these changes, with some being more impactful than others.

In this article, I outline the top 10 new features that you should be aware of, along with strategies for making the most out of each.

1. Use Search Queries to See the Keywords That You Appear for in Local Search & Maps

When Search Queries were first released in July 2023, it was a game changer for local SEO.

Previously, it wasn’t easy to see for which keywords your Google My Business listing appeared.

Your best data source was Google Search Console, which reports on traffic from both Google My Business and organic results.

The old method, which involved using URL parameters, gave you “impression” data through Google Search Console (when your website appeared in a search result for a user).

The new dataset in Google My Business, on the other hand, gives you the ability to see “unique users,” which is different than impressions because a single user could create several impressions.

Google’s support Documentation suggests this data can be best used to create Google Posts and Ads.

I’ve been using the data for on-page keyword optimization and ensuring that the queries relating to products and services are represented on the Google My Business listing.

For example, if your customers are regularly searching for “trek bikes”, make sure there’s imagery of that product uploaded to your listing and outbound links developed directly to that product.

2. Allow Customers to Message You Directly Through Your Listing

A new feature that is now available in select countries is the ability for customers to message businesses via Google Search and Maps.

To activate this feature on your listing, you’ll need to first install the new Google My Business app for either iOS or Android.

Once installed, here’s how to get the feature up and running:

Open the Google My Business app.

If you have multiple locations, open the one for which you’d like to enable this.

This feature isn’t too prominent on listings just yet (not available on desktop), although I imagine this will become available in the not-too-distant future.

Before enabling this feature, I would recommend having a process in place for the correct person to receive the notifications, and to respond in a timely fashion.

Give your customers the ability to ask you a quick question that could result in a sale. Learn more about this feature.

3. Easily Manage 100+ Locations with the Agency Dashboard

When the Agency Dashboard first rolled out to all users midway through last year, there were some bugs that made the transfer over from the standard dashboard very painful.

Thankfully, many of those bugs have now been ironed out. The new dashboard is working as it was designed to.

Transferring to this new dashboard was one of the best operational moves our SEO team made all year.

Instead of giving access via several Gmail accounts to our entire team, we are now able to assign certain location groups to our account managers.

Not only this, we can now more effectively send and receive invitations to manage listings when we get a new client on board.

If you work for or manage your own agency, then I’d highly recommend signing up if you haven’t already.

4. Add Products to Your Listings

On mobile, you can now make products visible on your Google My Business listing through a Products tab.

Depending on your listing category, you’ll have the capability to add a Collection of products to your listing with a call-to-action directing visitors to the corresponding product page.

To get a Collection live, you’ll need to complete the following:

Through the desktop Google My Business dashboard, navigate to Products (Beta) tab.

Give the Collection a name and description.

Add a product with a: photo, product name, price, and description.

Select Add collection to save.

I’ve found this to be a valuable feature, as you’re now able to easily promote your products when someone lands on your listing, as if they were already deep on your website.

At the moment, the product that you upload doesn’t appear on or influence Google’s search results.

I would recommend adding your top selling products to your listing, although make sure to keep pricing up-to-date, if that’s something that varies from time-to-time.

5. Don’t Have Products? Add Services to Your Listing Instead

Just as restaurants are able to add a menu to their listing, you can now add your own services in a similar format.

To see if this feature is applicable to your listing, navigate to Info within the dashboard and select Services.

Similar to adding a Collection like you do with the Products tab, you’re able to add a section with whatever name you think is most suitable.

For instance, I work with a dietitian consultancy that has this feature enabled. The section name I’ve used is Consultations.

Unlike the Products tab, you’re unable to link directly to the corresponding landing page on your website through this feature, so make sure to provide all the necessary information when building out your offering.

6. Add a Description to Your Listing with Useful Information About Your Business

With Google Plus being shut down earlier than expected, the local team has started to incorporate some of those features across to Google My Business.

This began well before the recent data breach, a clear indicator that Google had already planned to phase out Google Plus.

For local businesses, having the capability to add a description to your listing is certainly a win.

A useful application I found is adding your business’s email address to this section, along with what you offer, what sets you apart, and your history.

There isn’t currently a feature within Google My Business to add your email address, so it only seems right to present this information here.

7. Use Google’s Social Features, They’re Only Going to Become More Prevalent

It’s no secret that Google wants to compete in the social media space, they just haven’t quite found the right formula for success.

One of Google’s recent attempts has been the incorporation of more social features within the local results and Maps.

So far, we’ve seen the introduction of features such as Google Posts, Questions and Answers, and the ability to follow businesses on Maps.

And just recently, I’ve seen Google test a “like” feature on Google Posts – similar to how you’d like a status update on Facebook.

In terms of the “follow” feature, it’s recommended to investigate how you can get your customers to follow your business (when using Google Maps for Android at this time).

8. Get Customers to Call You, Directly from a Google Post

You’re now able to use a variety of different calls-to-action within Google Posts.

Along with promoting new articles through a “Learn More” CTA, I’m a big fan of creating an additional opportunity for customers to call your office (if that’s your preferred contact point).

When setting up a Google Post with this feature, it defaults to the primary phone number set on your listing.

On mobile, Google Posts are now showing separate to listings for branded searches – with “Call Now” being a nice addition to the results page.

9. Create Your Listing in Preparation for a New Business Launch

Another new feature within Google My Business is setting a future opening date for soon-to-open businesses.

All you need to do is select Verify later when you’re prompted to verify.

Only the year and month of the opening date is needed, with the listing starting to appear 90 days before opening.

The big benefit here is being able to create Google Posts, upload photos to your listing, and add a description to your listing – even if the business haven’t opened yet.

Best to keep this knowledge in your back pocket prior to a new location launch.

10. Set Your Service Area in Google My Business for More Effective Geotargeting

This new feature means that you’re provided with two separate fields in Google My Business to edit your business address and your service area.

Based on Google’s support documentation, this feature is best used by businesses who visit or deliver to local customers, such as:

A business that visits or delivers to customers, but doesn’t serve customers at its business address (e.g., a plumber or cleaning service).

A business that serves customers at its business address, but also visits or delivers to customers (e.g., a restaurant that also delivers food).

This update means you’ll no longer be able to set a service area as a radius surrounding your listing. Instead, you’ll need to specify by region, city, or ZIP/postcode.

Again, this is something that you should be aware of and use to its full potential – considering that the old method is now outdated.

Make Use of Google’s Local Offering – You Could Be Missing Out

One of the more difficult and frustrating components of local search is that some features only apply to certain devices, business categories, locations, browsers, and applications (e.g., Google Maps or the new Google My Business App).

The impact of Google My Business features as a local ranking signal is unclear, with the principles of proximity, relevance, and prominence remaining the core principles for local ranking.

Ultimately, if you want to compete in local search, it’s important to differentiate your listing from your competitors.

The 10 features discussed in this article will help set yourself apart from the rest.

What’S New With Windows 8

In case you are not aware, Microsoft has released the first developer preview of their Windows 8 for the public to test out. If you do not have the chance to test it out, follow us to see what new features are there and what to expect in the upcoming Windows 8.

Windows 8 = Windows Phone 7?

Now, if you have used Windows Phone 7 before, the first thing you notice about Windows 8 is the similarity in the user interface. Microsoft has integrated the popular WP7 Metro interface into Windows 8, and the most obvious one is the start screen. There are tiles (big and small) everywhere on the screen and each tile represent a shortcut to an app. You can pin new tile, unpin existing tiles or even move them around and arrange them in the way you prefer.

Unlike previous version of Windows, this Windows 8 version will also work on ARM processor. This means that Windows 8 will work on tablet, mobile device and the desktop. As can be seen from the metro-style interface, it is really friendly on a touch screen, and yes, it works well with a mouse and keyboard too.

New Screen Corner action

When you move your cursor to the left bottom corner, it will show the clock (on the right side of the screen) and the options window. There are few options, namely Settings, Devices, Share and Search

The Search option is greatly improved in Windows 8. You can search for apps, or even notes/items within apps. The search is noticeably faster and the search results are more organized.

Better Performance

The overall performance of Windows 8 is good. Well, if you compare it to previous version of Windows, the performance increase is tremendous. No longer do you need to wait for 5 minutes for the system to boot up and become usable. While the boot up time is not, as what Microsoft has demoed, less than 5 seconds, the overall speed boost is noticeable. Every app runs more smoothly and you don’t see the system hanging up when plenty of apps are running concurrently. This is indeed very promising and hopefully it will get better in the final release.

Windows Explorer

The most significant change to the Windows Explorer is the addition of the ribbon menubar. The ribbon changes it behavior when a specified file is selected. For example, when you select a zipped file, the ribbon will change to show the “Extract” option. Some other features include choosing the default program to open for each file type.

The directory listing on the left panel can now be expanded to show the sub-directory. Something it should do, but didn’t do in its previous version.

Internet Explorer 10

Internet Explorer 10 build upon the functionality of IE9 and added more CSS3 and HTML5 handling capability. IE10 supports both the tablet and desktop. However, the tablet version is stated to ship without support for plugins. Instead, the plug-in free browser will make use of HTML5 engine to render videos and animation. No more flash for you.

Market Store

It is becoming a norm to integrate an app store in the OS now. Ubuntu, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Phone all have it, so it no surprise that the upcoming Windows 8 has one too. At the moment, the Market Store is still a work in progress, so it is not available for preview now.

Live Cloud Syncing

When you log into your Windows 8 account, you have an option to sign with your Windows Live ID. For those who did, all your data (pictures, address book), settings for the OS and for each app are synced to the cloud. What is the benefit of this? If you have multiple Windows 8 PC, you just need to sign in to your account and all your data will be restored back to the setting you have configured previously.

The metro-style UI is a major changeover from the previous iteration of Windows, but the overall changes are very positive. The switch between the Metro home screen and the desktop is pretty smooth, though it can be troublesome and irritating at times. The Start button is no longer functioning the same way we are familiar to and that will take some time to get used to. One thing that I am very impress is the boot up speed and the performance boost. I really hope it will maintain that way as you install more and more apps.

Installing Windows 8

Windows 8 requires you to upgrade your existing Windows 7 installation or do a clean install. Either way, you are not able to restore back to the previous version. The ISO is available for download here and you can burn it to a DVD or create a bootable USB drive.

This is only a quick peek at Windows 8 and there are many more stuff that I didn’t cover. However, from the look of it, this build is very promising. What do you think?
