Windows System Image backup completed successfully shows 0 bytes on external hard drive backup folder.

Windows 11/10 backup says 0 bytes; does nothing!

If you’re faced with the issue whereby Windows 11/10 backup does nothing when you try to perform a backup task, you can try our recommended solutions in the order presented below to resolve the issue.

Run CHKDSK

Format the external storage drive

Use third-party backup utility

Use Cloud-based Online Backup service

Delete WindowsImageBackup folder (if applicable)

Let’s take a look at the description of the process involved concerning each of the listed solutions.

Before you try the solutions below, check for updates and install any available bits on your Windows 11/10 device and see if the issue is resolved. On the other hand, if the error started after a recent Windows update, you can perform System Restore or uninstall the update – but if you prefer not to do neither, you can then go ahead with the solutions below.

1] Run CHKDSK

The issue you’re having on your system might be caused by the bad sectors present on the external hard drive. In this case, to resolve the issue, you can run CHKDSK on the external drive and then see if you can now back up to the external storage drive.

For this, you have to use the ChkDsk /r parameter. The /r parameter repairs not only the errors but also the bad sectors on the selected disk.

chkdsk /r X:

Replace the letter X in the above command with your drive letter.

If the issue is unresolved after carrying out this task, try the next solution.

2] Format the external storage drive

This solution follows if CHKDSK didn’t fix the issue in hand. You may have to format the external storage drive which will erase any saved data/files. If Windows was unable to complete the format or the formatting just didn’t resolve the issue, you may have to replace the external drive.

But going forward, to prevent loss of backed up data at a single point in cases like this, we recommend the 3-2-1 Backup Rule which involves:

3: Create one primary backup and two copies of your data.

2: Save your backups to two different types of media.

1: Keep at least one backup media offsite.

3] Use third-party backup utility

It’s imperative to point out that File History, System Image, Backup and Restore in Windows 11/10 are not being actively maintained or developed. Microsoft is planning to remove these features in a future release. Based on this, we recommend you use any of the third-party free or professional Backup and Data recovery software for Windows PC.

4] Use Cloud-based Online Backup service

Similar to the solution above, you should also consider using any of the free Cloud-based Online Backup Services or encrypted Cloud Storage Services. With any of these secure paid or free services, you can backup so your files are easily accessible via the internet just like email.

5] Delete WindowsImageBackup folder (if applicable)

It’s likely you’re experiencing this issue in hand because you created a system image of your drive, which is not quite the same as backing up your data. The result would be stored in a folder called WindowsImageBackup which is inaccessible to you unless you operate under administrative privileges, and that’s why you cannot see any files. To be sure this scenario doesn’t apply here, do the following:

Press Windows key + R to invoke the Run dialog.

In the Run dialog box, type cmd and then press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER to open Command Prompt in admin/elevated mode.

In the command prompt window, type the command below and hit Enter to see the contents of the folder. Replace Q: with the correct drive letter for the external drive.

dir /s /a Q:WindowsImageBackup

Next, run the command below to delete the folder:

Warning: You will not be able to restore the folder from Recycle Bin.

rd  /s  /q  Q:WindowsImageBackup

Exit Command Prompt when done.

Why does my Windows 10 backup keep failing?

To fix Windows 11/10 backup to network drive fails, you can map Network Drive to local disk. If Windows won’t backup to external drive, make sure the drive is well-connected and formatted to NTFS file system.

Why is my File History not backing up?

File History do not backup encrypted file system (efs) files. So, if you have got these type of files on your system, they won’t be backed up and you may get the “File History has found files that are encrypted with Encrypting File System” error. In this case, make sure there is no encrypted files in the backup queue.

Is Windows 10 backup still supported?

Backup and Restore is no longer a maintained feature on Windows 11/10. You can still use it, but in the future, it may stop working. Also, as a deprecated feature in Windows, Microsoft can decide to completely remove this tool in future releases of the operating system.

Easily Backup Your Windows With Easeus Todo Backup

Easeus Todo is a free back up service for computers running Windows 2000 and newer. It is also compatible with Windows Server 2000/2003/2008. Todo not only can make backup images of your hard drives, it can also clone drives too. I am not going to go over that part of the application though.

Where to get it?

You will want to head to Easeus to get the exe file. There is a couple of download sites that you can choose from. I chose chúng tôi to get the file.

The Install The Interface

The interface is very well laid out. The icons and wording is pretty explanatory.

The selections some may not be familiar with are: mount, unmount and check image file. A common image file type is [.ISO]. The simplest explanation if an image file is an archive of an optical disc (e.g. CD, DVD, or hard drive).

Backup

The back up process is super easy. If you get lost or need help, there is a help button in the bottom left of every page along the way.

Keep in mind, if you are backing up a pretty full 500gb hard drive, you will need a lot of space. You CAN compress and/or split the backup file to fit on different media such as a DVD. That is still a lot of DVDs at the highest compression.

The next step is to select the destination location of the backup. If you want to store your back up to an external hard drive, select it now. You cannot restore to the same partition or drive where the backup file is located. That seems like common sense, but I thought I would add that in just in case you aren’t paying attention to the default save location. The default save location for me was in the program files folder of the partition I was backing up. Make sure you change that.

Restore

To restore information, the process is pretty much the reverse of creating a backup.

Select the backup file to restore from. Hopefully you have these well labeled to avoid restoring the wrong information.

Select the space, drive or partition to restore to.

Proceed.

It really is that easy. Depending on the amount of information you are restoring (or backing up for that matter) you may want to run these at a time when you don’t need you computer for a while. I was only backing up a about 15gb and it took about 10 minutes. If you are working with the maximum of 1.5tb, you may want to run it overnight.

How are you safeguarding your information incase of a hard drive crash?

When thinking of photo editing software, there are only a few names that really come in mind. For me, there is Photoshop, ACDSee , and, of course, GIMP.

Although all of them work pretty well, each of us has his own preference, and for those of you who like to use GIMP for image editing, you will be thrilled to know that it is compatible with Windows 10, Windows 8.

The latest version of GIMP is fully compatible with Microsoft’s new operating system, and it has also received many improvements from the last version, which had some issues.

Also, as in terms of features, it is comparable with Adobe’s Photoshop, but it is much more resource-friendly, which makes for a great Windows 8, Windows 10 program.

GIMP for Windows 10, Windows 8 – A quick walkthrough

Keep in mind that unlike other photo editing apps like Fotor for Windows 10, Windows 8, or Fresh Paint, Gimp for Windows 10 Windows 8 is not an app, but a full Desktop program.

This is the same one that is compatible with Windows XP and Windows 7, so if you were looking for a dedicated app, then you will be disappointed as there is no official app at the time of this writing. H

owever, there is a GIMP Guide app available on the Microsoft Store, for those interested in learning how to use GIMP .

Moving on to the actual program, GIMP for Windows 10, Windows 8 is exactly the same as the versions for the old Windows operating systems.

Also, for those who are just starting to use GIMP, you will probably have to watch a few tutorials before you start working.

You might be interested in our article about 9 best image optimization software for PC

After installing GIMP on Windows 10, Windows 8, you will notice that it starts in multiple window format, which allows the user to move each element on the screen and place them where ever they want. While this feature is great for multiple monitor setups, I don’t think it is ideal for a single monitor.

The tools are pretty similar to Photoshop, allowing users of GIMP to create or edit photos very quickly and efficiently.

Also, a difference I noticed when using GIMP on Windows 10, Windows 8 is the overall smoothness and speed with which images open and tools work.

One of my favorite tools that GIMP for Windows 10, Windows 8 provides is the angle measurement feature, perfect for those who do precision work.

GIMP also supports hundreds of plug-ins and scripts that give you access to an even bigger list of image editing options. You can add new brushes to the tool, as well as new gradients, colors, patterns and splashes. You can check out the full list of supported plug-ins in the GIMP Plugin Registry.

Perhaps some of the most popular GIMP plug-ins are Layer Effects and Layer via Copy/Cut.

These two tools bring a useful feature from Photoshop into GIMP, allowing designers who work with layers to copy, cut, and paste areas from one layer or a group of layers.

You can also create new layers using the areas you previously selected.

Overall, GIMP for Windows 10, Windows 8 offers all the goodies that users are familiar with, but with the added bonus of Windows 8 support and the speed that it has.

Now you know that GIMP runs on Windows 10, Windows 8 without a hitch, which means that you can start editing photos just like before.

How To Activate Windows 11 Or Windows 10

In this post, we will see how to activate Windows 11/10. Activation is the initial process by which a Windows running on a PC is determined to be properly licensed and genuine, and it’s really quick and easy. It is different from Registration, in the sense that,  Activation is the process of ensuring that your copy of Windows is used according to the Microsoft Software License Terms, whereas registration is the process of entering information to sign up for product support, tools, and tips, and other product benefits.

It’s a great time to talk about Windows activation and how it will work. For customers who are already familiar with activating Windows 11/10, this will feel pretty familiar, and, as far as the user experience goes, it’s not too different from earlier Windows versions.

You can activate either online or by phone.

When you install Windows and log in with the user account, Windows will ask you to activate it. It’s a process through which Microsoft figures out if the copy of Windows is legit. Activation is easy, and it can be done through a Windows key or linked Microsoft account, and even transfer the key from an old machine to a new one if it’s a connected account. However, if you are facing an activation issue, this post will guide you on how to activate Windows 11 using multiple methods.

How to Activate Windows 11

You can use any of the following methods to activate your copy for Windows 11.

Run Activation Troubleshooter

SLMGR Command

Use your Microsoft Account

Before you go ahead with any of the steps, ensure that you have a proper internet connection and restart the system at least once. At times activation gets stuck, and this can help to resolve. Also, you will need an admin account before using these methods.

1] Run Activation Troubleshooter

Windows will then run the wizard and internal programs to resolve the problem.

If essential troubleshooting works, and the activation key entered earlier or linked to Microsoft account is valid, Windows should get activated.

2] SLMGR Method

SLMGR or Software Licensing Management Tool is a tool that can run commands to activate Windows. It is available for Windows users as well, and anyone can use it. You will need to use the Windows key using this method.

Keep a copy of the Windows key in the clipboard and notepad.

Open Run prompt using Win + R and then type WT followed by pressing the Enter key.

Type and execute the command slmgr.vbs /upk  to remove previously installed key.

It will then use the key to connect with the Microsoft licensing server, validate it, and activate it.

SLMGR command may not be available for Windows Home users.

3] Sign-in with Microsoft Account

When installing Windows 11, if you have used a local account, and your key is connected to your Microsoft account, you need to use it. Once the Windows key is digitally linked with Microsoft account, you can activate it or transfer it to any PC.

Expand the Activation State

If you have previously linked your Windows with a Microsoft account, then it will instantly activate your copy of Windows 11.

Activate Windows 10

To activate Windows 10 OS do the following:

Properties

Windows Activation

You can then select the method you want to use to activate. However, if you had chosen to automatically activate Windows online when you set up your computer, it will do so automatically in 3 days.

Activate Windows 10 using the SLUI.EXE

You can also activate Windows using the SLUI.EXE 3 command. You can get more information in this post on how to activate Windows Enterprise Edition.

Or you can run the following command from an elevated command prompt:

Once activated, you can view the Licensing Status and Activation ID of your Windows OS with chúng tôi .

Activate Windows 11/10 by Phone

This post will show you how to Activate Windows by Phone. This post also offers Microsoft Volume Licensing Activation Centers Worldwide Telephone numbers.

Activate Windows 11/10 after a hardware change

If you face issues after a hardware change, then this post shows how to activate Windows after a hardware change.

How long can you use unactivated Windows?

There is a 30 days evaluation period during which everything works. There will be a watermark available on the desktop until Windows is activated. Ensure that if you are evaluating Windows, keep a backup up of all documents and important files.

What happens if you don’t activate Windows?

A couple of things will happen. You will receive a notification that “Windows is not activated, please activate Windows now.” in Settings. In addition to the lock screen and wallpaper, you will not change accent colors, themes, etc. You won’t be able to modify anything related to Personalization. Some apps and features may cease to function. In a couple of months, I will start rebooting randomly.

How can I activate my Windows 11 for free?

Short Answer, you cannot. However, you can transfer your Windows 10 License to Windows 11 as the upgrade process is free if it’s the same version of Windows. If you don’t have the key and perform a fresh install, first ensure to connect the Microsoft account on Windows 10. Once done, upgrade, and then again use the same account in Windows 11.

Does Microsoft have an ePub reader?

No, Microsoft doesn’t come with a native ePub reader tool. But, there are some good free ePub reader Microsoft Store apps that you can use to open and read ePub files on Windows 11/10. Bookviser Reader, Cover – Comic Reader, Real eBooks Reader, freda epub ebook reader apps, etc., are some good options to use.

Popular browsers like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc., aren’t able to read ePub files. You need to use some free ePub reader extension or add-on for this purpose. Or else, the best option is to use some eBook reader software, a Microsoft Store app, or an online tool that supports ePub format files.

Spotlight Doesn’t Work On Windows 10/11

Spotlight doesn’t work on Windows 10/11 [EFFECTIVE FIXES]

One thing is for certain when it comes to Windows 10’s UI: even though it’s not always intuitive, it looks great aesthetically. One of the features that’s not essential but impacts the overall impression must be Microsoft Spotlight.

For you that don’t know, Microsoft Spotlight basically automatically switches wallpapers for your Lock Screen. It uses Bing gallery photos from the whole world and changes them every time you log out.

It’s a great way to brighten up your initial screen while you stare in awe in the beautiful and unique parts of the globe.

However, it seems that Windows updates ruined the experience for some users. Luckily, we’re there for you. We’we prepared the list of the possible solutions that should help you resolve Spotlight issues.

How can I fix Spotlight on Windows 10? The easiest way to fix it is by restarting the service manually. In most cases, the problem is triggered by the lack of internet connection or some process bugs. If that doesn’t do the job, clean the Spotlight’s download folder and then reassign its service.

Continue reading for the detailed explanation.

Steps to repair Windows Spotlight: Solution 1 – Check your connection

The first step you should take is to check the connection. The Spotlight feature is dependable on the internet connection and without it, you won’t be able to get yourself that special nature scenery.

When you start your PC, you should see the connection signal or LAN notification on your Lock Screen. If it’s not there, make sure to troubleshoot your connection before we proceed to the next steps.

On the other hand, if your connection is functioning as intended and the Spotlight is still stuck/unresponsive, you’ll need to put more effort in the trouble at hand.

Solution 2 – Restart Spotlight

Another step you can take is to restart the Spotlight feature manually. Since this is a built-in system process, you can only perform standard enable/disable procedure instead of standard switching off. And this is how to do it:

Select the Lock Screen tab.

In Background panel, switch from Windows Spotlight to a Picture or the Slideshow.

Log off and log in.

Navigate to Lock screen and enable Windows Spotlight again.

Expert tip:

Solution 3 – Clean the Spotlight’s download folder

Additionally, you can clean the content from the download folder where the Spotlight photos are stored. That resolved the issue for some users, so it’s worth a try.

This is how to find and delete image files from the folder:

Open the Lock Screen tab.

Under Background, switch from Windows Spotlight to a Picture or the Slideshow.

Now, navigate to: C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalStateAssets

You’ll need to enable Hidden Folders in order to access the files.

In Assets folder, press Ctrl + A to select all files and delete them.

Enable the Spotlight again and log off.

The problem should be resolved. However, if it’s not, your best bet is our final solution.

Solution 4 – Reset/Reassign the Spotlight service

As we already said, Spotlight is an integrated feature and can’t be reinstalled or disabled in the standard way. But, at least, it can be reassigned and thus restored to default settings.

This procedure has two parts that can be used as two distinctive workarounds. But we’ll unite them here. Now, these are not exactly the easiest steps to perform, so follow the instructions closely:

Open Lock screen tab and change the Background from Windows Spotlight to Slideshow or Picture.

Confirm with OK.

Press Windows key + R to open the Run command line.

Copy-paste the following command and press Enter: %USERPROFILE%/AppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewySettings

Restart the PC.

Enable Windows Spotlight.

The second solution needs you to utilise Windows PowerShell in order to reset Spotlight. And this is how to do it.

Make sure that the Spotlight feature is enabled.

Under Windows Search bar, type Windows PowerShell.

In the command line, paste the following command:

Restart your computer.

This should restart Windows Spotlight and fix your issue.

It seems like Microsoft is aware of the problem and as some users reported, newer Windows 10 updates solved the issue without any additional steps. So make sure that you have the latest Windows 10 updates installed.

That should wrap it up. As you can see, there are some easy solutions, and some more complicated ones. Try them in the order above to see what works for you.
